Brandon Garden Club March 2014 Editor SHANNON BRICHON President Deane’s Message Wow, do you think this winter will ever come to an end ! Most of us are worried that this extreme cold has damaged or killed our trees and shrubs. Our guest speaker to-night will be able to address some of these concerns, so ask questions at the end of his presentation. There are two Hort Days coming up and there is more information in this letter. We have several workshops planned for April and May so sign up and take advantage of the discounts the nurseries are offering those evenings. You will be starting your bulbs and seeds soon; just remember the plant sale on May 24th. We need your extra plants and vegetables to make it a successful March 19th Program - Dr. Philip Ronald This evenings guest speaker is Dr. Philip Ronald of Jeffries Nurseries in Portage la Prairie, MB. Filled only with water and a few fallen leaves, it defines tranquility. Unfortunately, these stones cost hundreds of dollars. Luckily, a concrete mix called “hypertufa” was developed that has the look of stone, specifically the volcanic rock called tufa. fully messy. When it comes right down to it, a hypertufa casting is just a fancy mud pie. The materials used to make container are inexpensive, and the process is delight- Join Deane on April 26 !! The Brandon Garden Club meets at 7PM on the third Wednesday of each month except July and August at the Seniors for Seniors Complex at 311 Park Avenue East, Brandon. New members always welcome. Annual membership is $20 single / $30 couple. Non-members are welcome to attend meetings to take advantage of the Club’s horticulture programme at a cost of $5.00 per meeting. For more information on club affairs contact the club secretary, Nancy Lytle at 727-8912 or e-mail [email protected] . The club newsletter is published free for members and is distributed at monthly meetings. Contact the editor, Shannon Brichon at 727-3581. We have changed our policy for all garden club members. As you know we have had a change in ownership with the addition of Dick Vreeman as my partner in Patmore Nursery Sales Ltd. We have decided that we are going to lower our prices on many items we sell to offer the best price possible to all of our customers, This being said, we value the Brandon Garden Club and still want to offer a discount program. We will continue to offer 10% off on green goods only, Monday to Friday. This does not include the special arrangement we make for the container gardening day. Thanks for your understanding and look forward to seeing many of you this spring! Marci Bomford Horticulturist/owner
