Partners For Enrichment Brings Hawk Henries to LCS Once again Partners have provided our students with a rich and meaningful learning experience, this time via a visit from musician, philosopher, and craftsman Hawk Henries. “Hawk has experience in many settings ranging from formal performance venues to communitybased workshops to participation in local cultural events and dialogues. Whether in a kindergarten classroom, university event, Pow-Wow, cafe, museum, concert venue, international festival, or private gathering, Hawk most especially enjoys engaging people in dialogue. Much of Hawk’s time with others is spent sharing his experiences and perspectives about life in hopes of acknowledging and honoring the Sacredness in each person and all cultures. The flutes have always been a powerful vehicle for this sharing. Not only do you experience music from a variety of different flutes, but he also shares wonderful stories & humor that reminds us of the gifts that Life has to offer.” For more on Hawk visit www.hawkhenries.com. Lynx tracks January 13, 2016 After School Garden Club -- Winter Just because the days are getting cooler and shorter doesn’t mean we have to stop enjoying the garden. The garden may be shut down for the winter but there is still plenty to do. During the After School Garden Club, we will be cooking up a storm, and learning some great new recipes in the kitchen. We will also be looking outside to see what continues to grow in the garden during the winter. And lastly we will be bringing the garden inside to us. We will be growing seedlings, planning out our garden for the Spring, and taking care of our indoor plants to keep our green thumbs in practice. Join us rain, snow, or shine! Wednesdays for grades 4-8 Jan 13, Feb 3, Feb 24, March 9 Wednesdays for grades K-3 Jan 20, Feb 10, March 2, March 16 3:00pm - 4:00pm Registration forms will be sent home weekly pertaining to students grades. For more information contact Laurel Simone at [email protected]. Weekly Lynx Recipe This weekly recipe is here for you to share with your family. The Kids Cook Monday initiative encourages families to set aside the first night of every week for cooking and eating together as a family. When kids pitch in making meals, they’re empowered to consider the portions, the vitamins, and the nutrients of what they’re eating. The Kids Cook Monday provides examples of family friendly recipes and video demonstrations along with a free starter family dinner toolkit- making it easy for families to cook and eat together every Monday. Here’s a unique way to enjoy twice-baked potatoes brought to us by our friends at Potato Goodness. Not only will you enjoy a burst of flavor, but this recipe also packs quite a nutrient punch. Cooking Tip of the Week: Many plastic wraps are microwave safe, but for best results, make sure that there’s at least one inch of space between the plastic wrap and food. Food for Thought: Paprika is a powder made from ground chili peppers. It’s a popular ingredient in many Mediterranean recipes. The smoked variety is made by drying the peppers over wood fires and it brings a deep, woody flavor to recipes. Other varieties of paprika include hot, sweet, Spanish and Hungarian, but they all have one thing in common – a beautiful deep red color. Family Dinner Conversation Starter: Is it ever okay to lie? Directions: Together: Preheat oven to 425°F. Melt spread in a medium skillet. Add onion and cook over medium heat in a skillet for 10 to 15 minutes or until soft and lightly browned. Together: While onions are cooking, place potatoes in a medium microwave-safe bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Make a small slit to vent, then microwave on HIGH for 10 minutes or until potatoes are soft when gently squeezed. Together: Let cool slightly, then cut in half and carefully scoop out potato leaving a 1/4inch shell. Kid: Mash potatoes, then stir in cooked onion, yogurt, hummus, roasted red bell peppers, smoked paprika, garlic salt and pepper. Together: Place potato skins on a baking sheet and fill with mashed potato mixture. Bake for 20 minutes or until tops are lightly browned. Top with slivered Kalamata olives, if desired.
