Summer-Early Fall 2015
Azalea District Director
Report—July 2015
Greetings Amazing Azaleas! I am honored that you have elected me as your
Azalea District Director. I am looking
forward to working with each of you
and having fun as we beautify, conserve and educate our world to make it
a better place for generations to follow.
I thank all of you who have agreed to serve on the Azalea
Board for the 2015-17 term and I know that together we will accomplish much.
We have had a good start to the two year term beginning in
May when several Azalea members along with members from other
districts completed Course IV of the Gardening Studies School in
Augusta and are now qualified as Gardening Consultants.
On May 6th I attended the dedication of a park bench honoring
paralyzed veterans at Evans Towne Center given by the Willow
Wood Garden Club. On May 11th a Blue Star Marker dedication was
held in Lincolnton at the Courthouse sponsored by the Pine Needle
GC of Lincolnton. Blue Star Marker #150 for the State of Georgia
was dedicated at the Columbia County Courthouse in Evans on June
9th by the Augusta Council of Garden Clubs.
In July the Wild & Wonderful Camp was held at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center where fun was had by all attendees and counselors. That same week the Club Officers Workshop was held in Athens
at the Botanical Gardens, taught by Former State President, Sara
Lanier.

Plant Sale Fund Raiser
Evergreen Garden Club in Monroe, GA held a wonderful Plant Sale on May 30th. It was held
at Ian Henderson’s Antique mall. Club members gathered plants from their garden for this
event, happy to show off their gardening skills and raise funds for their club.
The sale was very successful. They also met several people who talked with them about joining Evergreen Garden Club. Items sold were plants and garden whimsy items.

Louisville Garden Club Presents Entertaining Designs
The club held a fundraiser to raise monies for our ongoing courthouse plantings and
Jefferson Hospital Patients' Garden. The event was called Entertaining Designs:
Creative Tablescapes for Today, and was held on May 30, 2015, in conjunction with
the upcoming Garden Week, in the local historic Abbot-Easterlin home.
Garden Club members created 15 tables around a variety of themes, several of which
are seen below. Members designed the tables and did the floral display for each. The
event was attended by approximately 150 people, and was a great success. Garden
Club members are pictured below wearing our trademark pink garden club aprons.

In memory of former GCG President Suzanne Wheeler, North Georgia Council of
Flower Show Judges is sponsoring a Flower Show School to be held at Bellmere
Garden House in Johns Creek. Come and join us September 28-30, 2015 for
Course I. Learn the “ins and outs” of flower shows and how to create and judge
award-winning designs. Georgia’s own, Fay Brassie, NGC Flower Show School
Instructor, will exhibit and discuss traditional mass, line, line/mass and still life
designs. If your focus is on horticulture, then you’ll want to come and hear Darlene Newell, NGC Flower Show School Instructor from West Virginia, talk about
chrysanthemums, succulents and cacti, and how to grow, show and judge them.
Flower Show School is not only for prospective flower show exhibitors and judges,
but also for all garden club members and all persons interested in flower design
and horticulture. While the primary purpose of these courses is to train those aspiring to become flower show judges, many people attend for information only.
Each of the four courses, offered approximately every six months, includes Horticulture curriculum, Design instruction and Flower Show Procedure. The cost for
each course is $125.00. For further information, contact Joy Zaidan, GCG Flower
Show Schools Chairman at [email protected] or 770-493-8475.

Wild & Wonderful Experience 2015
Camp Update
Another three day Wild & Wonderful Experience was enjoyed at our GCG Environmental Education Camp held at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield. All 17 campers had a
great time participating in the many classes held for them July 12th -14th.
On Sunday we started with hiking to learn more about the camp, followed by an interactive
program presented by GCG President Martha Price. She used an inflatable earth ball and apples to teach our campers how much of our water is actually potable. By cutting the apples
and doing a little math, the results are staggering. Jean O’Shields was on hand to add humor
with a lesson on litter. Our campers could recite the water lesson results for their parents on
our last day!
Container gardening, the Lay of the Land Enviro-Scape and identifying frog sounds with
Linda May (Environmental Outreach Coordinator, Nongame Conservation, DNR) rounded out
the afternoon. Star Gazing with the Charlie Elliott Chapter of the Atlanta Astronomy Club is
always a treat.
Monday morning brought hiking with Mr. Pete, learning about the Native American “grocery
store” and a Stream Study with the CEWC interns. In the afternoon Ranger Pete brought in
“Amazing Animals” birds of prey and reptiles. Next on the agenda was a scavenger hunt of
the Visitors Center, painting birdhouses and an underwater flower/basic design class. Our
evening entertainment began with The Apostles of Bluegrass members Johnny Roquemore
and John Nipper. A campfire and s’mores rounded out day two.
Tuesday we completed our camping experience with Archery, the Brooke Ager Discovery
Center and Fishing. As each camper departs for home, they take along the knowledge to always keep our world better than how it was found. A focus on clean water and our water
supply was the theme of this 2015 environmental education camp.
The W&WE camp continues with the dedication and support of you, The Garden Club of
Georgia, Inc. and the allegiance of the staff at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center. Plans are
underway for July 10-12, 2016. Please consider a child who will be entering 5th & 6th grades
that you, your club, council or district would like to sponsor. Registration will open March 1,
2016. Our recovery is assured and we will start making plans for next year!
