Azalea Trumpet Winter—Early Spring 2016 Azalea Director`s Message
Azalea Trumpet
Winter—Early Spring 2016
Hello Amazing Azaleas.
I trust you all had a very
Merry Christmas and a
Happy New year. We celebrated Christmas in short
sleeve tops, shorts and flip
flops and now we are experiencing some normal, cold January temperatures.
I am still hearing good comments on the
“Frolicking With Frogs” Azalea District meeting.
You were all truly amazing in support of this
meeting in October.
In November many Azalea members attended
the State President's Workshop and Tri-Refresher
“Action In the Environment in Cordele”. Most of
us stayed in very comfortable cabins and the two
day program featured many interesting speakers
and several fun hands-on activities. We heard
about, amphibians, bees, butterflies, also miniature gardening in containers, pollinator gardens
and State Parks & Public Lands Environments.
Then Native plants, invasive plants, turf grasses,
digital landscaping, healthy lawn care and plants

to keep a healthy home. For the activities we played Park Bingo and I learned a lots
about our state parks and where they are located throughout the state. We also made
bee houses, a native plant leaf booklet and wildflower seed bombs. It was two days
well spent at a Georgia Veterans State Park.
December rolled in and Amazing Azaleas were busier than ever delivering hand
made Garden Therapy stockings and Fig Leaf items to nursing, veterans and shut-ins
homes.
Director’s Message Continued:
You also delivered wreaths, poinsettias and floral arrangements to schools, libraries and public offices. You decorated historical buildings, Hope & Friendship
houses and the Ronald McDonald House. Then you held your fun Christmas Garden Club parties, hosted Holiday Home & Garden Tours and entertained your own
family and friends throughout the holiday season. Spade & Trowel of Augusta
celebrated their 60th Anniversary in December and Watkinsville will celebrate
their 75th in February. Congratulations!
I hope you have sent in several awards to State and I trust all Presidents are
busy preparing the Presidents Reports. I want to hear from every club in Azalea
District because you are all important to me and I want to get to know each club
better. If I can help you in anyway, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Be sure to mark your new 2016 Expressions Calendar with dates of all upcoming meetings. Our Board Meeting will be on February 11th in Waynesboro and I
look forward to seeing all of you there. I will have all the latest from State after
attending State Board meeting next week in Milledgeville. The GCG Convention
will be April 13-14th in Macon and the Sacred Heart Garden Festival & ACGC
Flower Show will be April 22-24th.
This would be a good time to enter an arrangement in a fun show.
I am looking forward to a fun and fulfilling 2016 as we all work together to
beautify, conserve and educate to make a better world for everyone.

Pine Tree Garden Club, Hartwell stays busy.
In December of 2015, several members of the Pine Tree
Garden Club met at Hart Care Center to deliver
Christmas stocking to the residents. Members of the
garden club made the stockings and placed a dollar in
each. This is an on-going club project called Garden
Therapy. The money can be used as bingo prizes, to

Celebrating 60 years
Members, past Presidents, and special guests celebrated the 60th Anniversary of founding of Augusta’s Spade & Trowel Garden Club on 10 December 2015. Our event was held
at the Wallace House, Augusta Country Club, in Augusta, GA, where the rooms were
decorated with ten large poinsettias and greens. Each table had a wonderful centerpiece
with greens, red roses, white chrysanthemums, camellias, and gold accents. As a special
treat, members were given an etched glass Christmas ornament which included a “Spade
& Trowel.”
Erick Montgomery, Executive Director of Historic Augusta presented the club with a Certificate of Commendation thanking us for our years of service to Historic Augusta and the
Woodrow Wilson Childhood Home. In addition Mayor Hardie Davis issued a proclamation
stating December 10, 2015, as Spade and Trowel Garden Club Day in Augusta, Georgia.
Betty Davis, Azalea District Director, congratulated us on our success and praised our
service to the community.

Course IV: March 28-30, 2017
Venue: Bellmere Garden House
10777 Bell Road
Johns Creek, GA 30097
Registration Deadline: March 1, 2016
In memory of former GCG President Suzanne Wheeler, North Georgia Council of
Flower Show Judges is sponsoring a Flower Show School to be held at Bellmere
Garden House in Johns Creek. Come and join us March 14-17, 2016 for Course II.
Learn the “ins and outs” of flower shows and how to judge floral designs and horticulture. Trece Chancellor, NGC Flower Show School Design Instructor, will exhibit and discuss Creative Designs with minor and moderate abstraction, as well
as Creative Mass Designs. If your focus is on horticulture, then you’ll want to
come and hear our very own Carolyn Hawkins, NGC Flower Show School Horticulture and Flower Show Procedure Instructor, talk about Daffodils and woody perennials, with an emphasis on Aucuba, and how to grow, show and judge them. She
will also present Flower Show Procedure and the rules associated with holding a
flower show.
Flower Show School is not only for prospective flower show exhibitors and judges,
but also for all garden club members and all persons interested in flower design
and horticulture. While the primary purpose of these courses is to train those aspiring to become flower show judges, many people attend for information only.
Each of the four courses, offered approximately six months apart, includes Horticulture curriculum, Flower Show Procedure and Design instruction. The cost for
each course is $130.00 for full-time students and a judge’s special of $90 for the
two-day course. Courses need not be taken sequentially, so if you missed Course I,
you can begin with Course II and pick up Course I later. For further information,

EVERGREEN GARDEN CLUB
Mini Evergreen Festival
Our club is very involved in supporting the McDaniel-Tichenor House, a historic community event house. In November of each year, our club, along with
several other community organizations, decorate the House for Christmas. We
decorate the Library by doing a tree and prettying up the mantel. Other community organizations decorate other rooms. All in preparation for the Mini Evergreen Festival held each year in November. Some of the shops and many
people of the community donate items for a silent auction for fundraising. This
year our club donated 22 lasagna pots that we had planted at our November
meeting. This is our third year of donating the pots and the auction goers have
learned to come looking for them. They are priced $20. and up and they always
sell out.
Evergreen Garden Club loves to do this each year and helped the McDanielTichenor House raise over $5,000 on the Mini Evergreen Festival in 2015.
