VOLUME XIV – EDITION III
AUTUMN 2015
LINDA RAGLAND, EDITOR
Dear Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Members,
Time is going by fast for 2015. We have had such a busy summer, and I
know that you have all learned a lot from the Club Officers Workshops
and Awards Workshops. We had a great time gaining knowledge to help
us go to work for our organization.
Our Youth Camp was a big deal this year as usual. Seventeen young
minds learned, had fun, and now know who The Garden Club of
Georgia, Inc. is.
The Conservation Wildlife Program (CWP) was a big success.
Attendance was very good. Everyone seemed to be ready to participate.
We are looking forward to being backyard and neighborhood certified.
District Meetings are the main attraction for October. Seven Directors
are sharing wonderful programs in their districts to support The Garden
Club of Georgia, Inc. This is the best time to be with friends from other
parts of our beautiful state.
We are now getting ready for the upcoming event at Lake
Blackshear in Cordele. November will never be the same, because
PAGE
we are going to learn, have fun, and refresh our knowledge in
1
2
Environmental Studies, Garden Study and Landscape Design.
3-4
5-6
Georgia will be one of the very best educated Garden Club
7–8
organizations in the Deep South and National.
9 - 10
11 – 12
Please start to make plans for all the awards that you are going
13 – 14
15 – 16
to win this year. You first must dedicate yourselves to a particular
17 – 18
award and then submit. We love bring home the awards that
19
20
Georgia is so capable of winning.
21
22
Get ready for the Garden Therapy Projects to come up very
23
soon. We have a gift of doing just the right thing for others to
24
25
show how we care. Garden Therapy is one way of doing this.
26 - 27
28
Don’t forget our students and the scholarships that are needed.
29
We need to educate them as well as ourselves.
30
31
Enjoy the cooler days and beautiful leaves as fall approaches.
32
32
We have begun our sowing seeds of knowledge. Now we shall
33
start to reap some conservation with beauty that follows.

at Georgia Veterans State Park
2459-H US Highway 280 West, Cordele, GA 31015
Our GCG President Martha Price welcomes the challenge to ‘Leap into Action’ and embrace the NGC
Theme of “Service in Action”. Martha has focused her GCG Special Projects on Water Conservation
and Native Plants and also supports the NGC philosophy that garden club leadership is important
in saving our pollinators, amphibians and monarchs.
To that end, Martha called for a “State President’s Workshop” to promote leadership and
education in those areas – a workshop in which both young and ‘not-so-young’ members could
participate. 3rd VP Virginia Pennington (she chairs NGC & DSR Projects) and Marilyn McDonnell (our new
Chairman for Parks and Public Lands) have organized this fantastic event to be held at Lake Blackshear Resort
in mid-November. And as an added bonus, this workshop is also a Tri-Refresher for our three
consultant groups. What a great opportunity for you to update your credentials.
There is an outstanding group of instructors who will present programs on a variety of
topics. Evening activities will be included. You will surely want to join us for this exciting event and
participate in this ACTION packed workshop.
Mark your calendars now and make plans for November. Reserve your lodging early and send in
your registration fee and form. Club Presidents - please share this information with your garden club
members. One big advantage of being a member of GCG is the opportunity to participate in these
exciting educational events. Everyone is welcome.

Attract Pollinators by planting an Herb Garden
NGC 2015-2017 special projects focus on Preserving and Nurturing our Bio-Indicators by reversing
the population decline in pollinator species: “Bee a Wildlife Action Hero” encourages members to
become actively involved; BeeGAP initiative designed to increase the awareness of native bees and
encourage efforts to increase bee population; the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge- a campaign to
register a million public and private gardens and landscapes to support pollinators are just a few of
the programs the NGC encourages state garden club members to do.
ALL of these projects can be accomplished by planting an herb garden!
When it comes to vegetable and fruit production,
pollinating insects are the very lifeblood of the garden.
For the majority of food plants they're 100% necessary, so
it's important to make pollinators at home in the garden
and encourage them to stay. Many herbs produce flowers
that are completely irresistible to pollinating insects, as
well as an unlimited number of wildlife species including
native bee species, honeybees, butterflies, and
hummingbirds. Herbs are a solution to the need
expressed by many beekeepers to increase nectar
availability in an area. Herbs are versatile blooming the
same year they're planted in many cases. With sufficient
variety, an herb garden can have plants in bloom 10
months of the year, providing nectar and pollen sources for honeybees.
Herbs such as basil, lemon balm, chamomile, dandelion, dill, and sage are examples of bee favorites.
Many pollinators are tiny and like plants with tiny flowers; plant thymes, mints, oregano,
and rosemary to attract them. Larger pollinators, especially big bumblebees, prefer plants with larger
and sturdier flowers such lavender, sage, bee balm, stinging nettle, and anise hyssop. We don’t often
think of butterflies as pollinators. Butterflies are the happiest in sipping on flowers planted in areas
with good sun and little or no wind. Consider planting chives, thyme, marjoram, catmint, mint,
chives, or parsley. You could also plant herbs with flowers in umbels such as dill, yarrow, caraway,
and Echinacea for them to feast on. Another overlooked pollinator is a hummingbird. They like bee
balm, comfrey, and lavender, mallow, globe thistle, and find pineapple sage irresistible. Some herbs
do double duty, attracting both pollinators and parasitic wasps and hoverflies. If you don’t have a lot
of space, consider planting chamomile, dill, anise, or parsley to lure both kinds of beneficial to your
garden.
“Bee a Wildlife Action Hero” by attracting pollinators, butterflies,
and other beautiful wildlife to your community, herb, or vegetable
garden. One garden alone can't save the bees, birds and butterflies, but if each of us
plants just a few herbs pollinators love, what a difference we could make!
Complement your vegetable garden some pollinator-seducing herbs.

The Community Wildlife Project
(CWP) is a joint effort of GCG and the Department of Natural Resources Non-game
Division. Its purpose is to better manage non-game wildlife and plant habitats in
rural, urban, and suburban communities seeks to:




Enhance native nongame animal and plant populations and their habitats in urban,
suburban and rural communities throughout the state.
Foster wildlife conservation stewardship and education in Georgia communities.
Promote respect and appreciation of wildlife in combination with community beautification.
Improve the quality of life for Georgians living in these communities.
For over ten years, homeowners have been certifying their backyards through this program.
Although this is a Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. project, you do not need to be a Garden Club member
to participate. A certificate will be awarded to the district with the highest certification of the year in
both the Backyard and Hummingbird Haven categories based on percentage of membership. Please
encourage all Georgia residents to participate in this easy and important program. It's a win-win
situation! By caring for and protecting our wildlife through Backyard Habitats, we also create
wonderful viewing environments. As an added bonus, your club receives points on the annual Club
President's report if you have members with certified backyards. Participation categories include:






Individual Backyard Certification (download application here)
Neighborhood Backyard Certification—Invite your neighbors to complete a survey
Communal Living Backyard Certification—For apartment, condo, townhouse, or assisted
living dwellers (download application here)

community while creating a diverse and large scale habitat for wildlife
Hummingbird Haven - Individual Yard Certification (download application here)

Some of the criteria for CWP are:

attracting birds by planting wildflowers
ensuring protection of wetlands
utilizing native trees and shrubs in landscape
educating the public sector on wildlife needs through nature trails and
outdoor classrooms
attracting non-game animals to private and public lands by creating
nesting islands in brush, rock piles and tree cavities
Complete the forms available above and see if your yard qualifies to be a "Certified Wildlife Habitat."
Certificates will be delivered at the annual district meetings. Once certified, you are eligible to purchase the
beautiful metal sign pictured above right for $8.00. For further information, contact Terry Waith, GCG

Legislative, Governmental Affairs
Chairman - Tally Sweat
Prior to your upcoming district board meetings, I'd like to alert you about several
issues/events that you are requested to pass on to others in your districts and the state at
large.
As your legislative chairman for the last four years, I have been exposed to many
environmental issues and none more important than those concerning our clean air and
water. By now, I imagine each of you has heard about the new EPA rulings to curb air
pollution and global warming that came out of Washington this past week. Please learn as
much as you can about the issues across the spectrum and share with me your
recommendations for handling any upcoming state or local legislation that might relate to
those rulings and I will keep you informed of any items that come to my attention.
Secondly, I wish to thank all of you who weighed in on two of the bills concerning water that
resulted in one passage, the Salt Marsh Protection Bill, and one failure, the "plastics bag
everywhere" bill which was defeated. Another important bill, SB 30, passed the Georgia
Senate but remains in the House Natural Resource Committee. This bill would provide
protection for Groundwater which is so very important as it provides the drinking water for
many in our state.
CAPITOL CONSERVATION DAY IN GEORGIA

FEBRUARY 18, 2016
Please mark your calendars to attend, and invite others to attend, Capitol
Conservation Day on Feb. 18, 2016. You can make a real difference with your
presence at the Legislature as we let our representatives and senators know
which legislation we are supporting in 2016!

GCG, Inc. to partner with each District in sponsoring a Blue Star Marker for each District. We would
like to have these markers in place and dedicated as soon as possible to complete this project. As

“Dollars Educate Scholars”
Fundraiser Launched
Many thanks for all of you who support scholarships. This year, $62,500.00 was awarded to 30
students. Two students won an additional $4,000.00 each from National. All of this was possible
because you cared and made scholarships a priority. The cycle begins again. The Scholarship
Committee is again asking for your continued support.
During the last administration, “Bagging for Scholarships” tote bags were offered for sale to
supplement the scholarship program. Since most of our bags have been sold, the Scholarship
Committee is launching a new fundraiser called “Dollars Educate Scholars”.
January has been designated as “Scholarship Month”. We are asking all club members to support
scholarships with a dollar per member during the month of January. Please note that we are not
replacing District Named Scholarships; they are vital to the Scholarship Program. This is in addition
to the Named Scholarships. However, for every $1,000.00 raised, the district can add another Named
Scholarship. At the January club meeting, each club treasurer will collect the dollars, deposit the cash
in their club account and write a check for that amount and send the check to the GCG Assistant
Treasurer, Susan Turner. She will electronically acknowledge the club’s contribution, credit the
district and send a thank you note to the club. Each club will receive an electronic reminder of the
fundraiser containing more information as to where to send the check and other information.
Martha Price, GCG President, will add points to the President’s report for club participation. 100%
clubs get extra points for the “Club of Excellence” report. We are counting on your help to get the
word out, as well as your continued support of scholarships. If you have additional questions or more
explanation, please contact Dot Williams at [email protected] or call at 478-477-1742. This is
just another way we can raise more money to give more scholarships, making it possible for students
to receive their college education.
Let’s raise the bar ONE MORE NOTCH by making January Dollars Educate Scholars” month.

Wildflower Chairmen
SEASON OPENING!
Rumors! Rumors! Rumors! Everybody is talking, it is truly the talk of the
town. Have you heard the news? The 2015-2017 Wildflower Team is gearing
up for action.
District Directors have selected their District Wildflower Chairmen. The
District Wildflower Chairmen will serve as team captains. GCG Wildflower
Chairmen Barbara and Evelyna will be coaching the teams. Our Award
Judges will referee the games. Every garden club in Georgia is invited to put
your team on the playing field.
Let the games begin, and may the best team win!
We interviewed some pros to get their suggestions for some training tips, and inventive strategies.
This is what they advise. Every team needs a captain. Select your club Wildflower chairman. Every
team needs a plan. Select your best Wildflower programs and projects. Work your plan.
Remember your team not only needs quarterbacks and heavy hitters, you also need cheerleaders
and water boys. It is a team sport. Plan and practice. Get in shape. The competition will be tough.
The winning team will end the season as the state champions, and will have all the bragging rights
to Wildflower Award # 11.

LEAPING INTO
LITTER & POLLUTION CONTROL/RECYCLING
Evelyna Keadle Rogers
If you attended the 2015 Convention at Jekyll Island perhaps you wandered
down by the pond and met our frogs. We do admit they are a loud group,
croaking and singing all the while. And, there are some loud mouthed stump
speakers, too.
The frogs were enjoying a frog jamboree. However, the purpose of their
gathering is a serious one. The frogs want to call our attention to the serious
problems litter and pollution are causing in our lakes, ponds, rivers, oceans, and all across our land.
Choosing to make their first appearance at the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. state convention was
no accident. Their leaders selected this sight with care. Where else might they have found a group
more concerned with protecting the waters and the land? Where else could they make their plight
heard by a group so well equipped to take positive action?
Maybe you were too busy at the convention, or having too much fun, to stop down by the
pond and meet the frogs. If you missed them at the convention, the frogs want us to tell
you to just find them at the District Meetings. They are taking their message on the road,
and will be making appearances at your District Meeting.
Please pay attention to our warning. The frogs are serious, they are out to recruit you
in their fight against litter and pollution. They want to entice you into planning programs
to inform all members and communities about the dangers caused by litter and pollution. They want
you to plan projects, and to take action. They want you to recycle, and get your community involved.
If you have questions, or need more information, the frogs have authorized Garden Club of
Georgia, Inc. Chairmen Barbara Keadle Johnson, and Evelyna Keadle Rogers to share with you on
their behalf. They may be reached: Barbara Keadle Johnson, 7695 Highway 37, Camilla, Georgia
31730, or Evelyna Keadle Rogers, [email protected]
The frogs will be waiting for you down by the pond. They look forward to meeting you, and inviting
you to join them in LEAPING Into Litter & Pollution Control/Recycling.

The “Travelers” Went A-Travelin’
GCG Awards Workshops around the State
GCG Awards Chairman, Jackie Fulmer, and Deep South Awards Chairman for GCG, Lou Ann
Bleakley, along with several awards judges traveled from the north, to the south, to the east and to the
west presenting workshops to all seven districts. “The Travelers”, accompanied by President Martha
Price, began Monday, August 17 in Albany with Camellia and Magnolia Districts and ended Friday,
August 21 in Tucker with Dogwood and Redbud Districts. Oleander, Azalea and Laurel Districts were
in the middle of the week.
A new format was created for the 2015-2017 Awards Workshops. The chairman, who served as
facilitator, was accompanied by judges from the areas of scrapbook, publications, civic improvement,
youth and youth poetry. Along the way, other judges joined the group and spoke about their
chairmanship. These chairmen were the “experts” in their field. The team was encouraged by the
participation (240 attendees) and the questions that were asked. The team served as cheerleaders to
encourage clubs and councils to do the work and apply for the award as the reward for work well done.
The current awards committee wants this to be a record breaking year for awards applications and
awards won at Deep South and National Conventions.
