This season the club has a chance to do even more as it begins its campaign in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague qualifying rounds. Unics reached the Eurocup Finals sporting a 20-2 record, which helped Andrew Goudelock earn Eurocup MVP honors and Andrea Trinchieri to be chosen as the Eurocup Coach of the Year. Valencia Basket Club stopped Unics’s march to the title, but Unics bounced back by lifting the Russian Cup trophy and reaching the VTB League semifinals. Founded in 1991, Unics soon became the perfect ambassador for the sports-crazy Republic of Tatarstan in the Russian Federation and within a decade was challenging for titles. The club reached the Russian League finals in 2001 and 2002, the year in which it also made it to the Saporta Cup semifinals. Its hard work paid off in 2003, when Unics downed CSKA in overtime to lift the Russian Cup. In 2004, Kazan was home to the FIBA Europe League final four and Unics made the most of it by downing Maroussi to win its first continental title. Unics made its ULEB Cup debut in the 2005-06 season and already reached the semifinals the following year, before losing against Real Madrid. Unics also reached the 2008 ULEB Cup Final Eight. Everything clicked in the 2010-11 Eurocup as Unics won its regular season and Last 16 groups and swept its quarterfinal series. Once in the Finals, Unics thrashed Cedevita Zagreb in the semifinals and bested Cajasol Sevilla in the championship game. Marko Popovic amassed 18 points and 11 assists to earn Finals MVP honors. Unics made its Euroleague debut a successful one in 2011-12 season by going all the way to the playoffs. No longer satisfied with being near the top, expect Unics Kazan to challenge for plenty of silverware this season and try to reach the Euroleague through the qualifying rounds. 4 Team roster: UNICS KAZAN No. Player Country Pos. The club comes off a magnificent campaign in which it won its first trophy – the Italian Cup – by knocking off host EA7 Emporio Armani Milan already in the quarterfinals; advanced two stages and was the top-scoring team in the Eurocup; and reached the Italian League semifinals. With All-Eurocup Second Team forward Caleb Green and Omar Thomas at forward and cousins Travis and Drake Diener in the backcourt, Coach Meo Sacchetti enjoyed a superb season on the sidelines. Now the club takes the next step forward by bringing the Turkish Airlines Euroleague to the Mediterranean isle of Sardinia. Founded in 1960 by a group of local students, the club began playing in regional championships three years later. It reached the Italian national leagues in 1966 and by 1986 it rose to the third division. Led by Max Bini, Mario Porto and Lino Mura, Sassari reached the Italian second division in 1989, where it stayed for a decade. By the mid-1990s, the team had embraced strict values of sportsmanship and fair play, which have allowed Sassari to win several awards in Italian basketball. In 1995, Sassari scored 158 points in a nonovertime game against Pavia, which remains a record in Italian professional basketball. The club returned to the Italian second division in 2003 and reached the promotion playoffs in 2008 and 2009, but missed getting to the top level after losing to Jesi and Soresina, respectively. Everything changed in the 2009-10 season when Sassari, led by Marcelus Kemp, Jason Rowe and Jiri Hubalek, downed Veroli in the promotion playoffs to reach the Italian elite. In its first season, Sassari had a sudden impact in the Italian League behind an outstanding James White. Sassari won its last three regular season games to reach the playoffs with a 15-15 record before taking a bow against EA7 Milan. Sassari proved it was a team on the rise in the 2011-12 season by reaching the Italian League semifinals for the first time ever. The Diener cousins and Quinton 9 Hosley made the difference for Sassari, which finished the regular season with a 20-12 record and downed Canadian Solar Bologna in the quarterfinals. That was enough to put Sardinia in the Eurocup for the first time. Dinamo’s Eurocup debut was a victorious won over Cajasol Seville, but Sassari missed a chance to reach the Last 16 with a Week 6 defeat to Orleans Loiret Basket. In between there was some history as Travis Diener set a new Eurocup single-game assists record with 15 against Crvena Zvezda Belgrade. Sassari also finished the 2013 Italian league regular season in second place. Last season Sassari built on its more-than-respectable Eurocup debut and took the next step toward the top in domestic play. Even before any balls hit the hardwood this season, history is being made in Sassari as Palasport Roberta Serradimigni prepares to host the best players and teams in Europe. With a feisty squad filled with self-confidence and great scoring ability, look for Sassari to attack from Day 1 as the club seeks a permanent place among the European elite. 10 Team roster: DINAMO Banco di Sardegna Sassari No.Player Country Pos. 3 LOGAN, DAVID USA Guard 1.84 1982 4 SOSA, EDGAR USA Guard 1.90 1988 7 SANDERS, RAKIM USA Forward 1.93 1989 8 DEVECCHI GIACOMO Italy Guard 1.96 1985 Nigeria Center 2.08 1986 10 CHESSA, MASSIMO Italy Guard 1.88 1988 11 DYSON, JEROME USA Guard 1.91 1987 14 SACCHETTI, BRIAN Italy Forward 2.00 1986 18 VANUZZO MANUEL Italy Forward 2.03 1975 21 BROOKS, JEFF USA Forward 2.03 1989 Bosnia - Herzegovina Forward 2.03 1985 Italy Center 2.11 1985 Forward Italy 2.08 1994 9 LAWAL, SHANE 22 TODIC, MIROSLAV 28 CUSIN, MARCO 32 TESSITORI, AMEDEO Italy Head coach SACCHETTI, ROMEO Height Born 11 Statistics: DINAMO Banco di Sardegna Sassari Part III EUROLEAGUE FORMAT 14 Regulations for Media Article 86. Access to Team Locker Rooms for the Media and Post-Game Press Conference 86.1. Five minutes after the final buzzer, the head coach or media director will announce to the accredited media that their team locker room is open. The team manager, media director or other official from each club will tell the players when the media are about to enter the locker room, and also if any women are among the accredited media. Then the locker room must be opened to properly accredited media, with local security thoroughly briefed to conform with the regulation and ensure accreditation enforcement. 86.2. The locker room will remain open to the accredited media for a minimum of 15 minutes, and the players will have to attend to them during this entire period at least. 86.3. If space allows, all accredited media – and only accredited media – will be allowed to enter both locker rooms. Due to, and only to, potential space problems, each club may decide before the season on a minimum number of accredited media – never less than 15 per locker room – to be given special locker room accreditations for each game. If the number does not meet the demand (16 or more accredited media want to enter locker rooms), the access will be awarded on a rotating game-to-game basis. Those not in the rotation for the locker room of the home team will be given accreditation to enter the locker room of the visiting team. Locker room accreditations will be distributed equally to all media types, with at least the Host Broadcaster, the Rights Holders of the visiting team’s territory, the premium media partner, one major daily newspaper, and one radio station allowed in the locker rooms of the home and visiting team after each game. The Euroleague.net correspondent of each club will always be included in the rotation. The Company will reserve the right to raise the minimum of 15 accredited media per locker room for certain games. All visiting media approved by the media director of the visiting club will be given accreditation at least to the locker room of the visiting team, and also to that of the home team, if space allows. All accredited media allowed to enter the locker rooms must follow the guidelines below: All media, except photographers, will only enter the locker room for interviews. 15 All media, except photographers and Rights Holders that are not interviewing any player, will exit the locker room. The Host Broadcaster will be allowed to shoot footage inside the locker rooms without the obligation to interview players or head coaches. All footage shot inside the locker room must be starting from the waist upwards. No footage shot below the waist will be allowed. The Host Broadcaster may also shoot footage of the teams’ arrival at the arena, their walk from the bus to the locker rooms and inside the locker rooms before the start of the game. The Host Broadcaster’s camera may shoot up to three minutes with all the players inside the locker room, without any interviews and always with the maximum respect for the players’ usual routine. 86.4. The press conference room will be located in proximity to the locker rooms and the media work room. A press conference with the head coach of the visiting team will begin within a maximum of 20 minutes following the final buzzer. Immediately following the conclusion of this a press conference with the head coach of the home team will start (the head coaches will attend to the media separately). The press conference times will not affect the opening of the team locker rooms. The home club is responsible for making an audio recording of the press conference and sending it to the Company’s Communication Department. 86.5. Without prejudice to the head coaches’ and players’ obligation to meet the media in the press conference room, mixed zone and locker rooms, the head coaches and players must also be available to talk to the Host Broadcasters and Right Holders of the visiting team’s territory on the playing court, for flash interviews, immediately after each game. 86.6. The coordination work for the correct functioning of the press conference and locker room policy will fall upon the media director of each club. 86.7. The media director or a staff member of each club will accompany their head coach and players to the press conference and will be responsible for the translation from/into English of all questions and statements. 86.8. The media director of the home club will be responsible for the translation of all questions and statements from/into English and the official language of the home club’s country. 86.9. A statement of post-game media access rules as provided by the Company will be posted, in English, on locker room doors and in the media work room of each arena before, during and after all games. 16 Venue Press facilities Basket-hall (Kazan, Russian Federation) 17 Date of foundation: 2002 Capacity: Main venue: 7.000 spectators, small venue: 1500 spectators "Basket-hall" is the home venue for all UNICS Kazan games. Then early in the summer, Italian head coach Andrea Trinchieri unexpectedly moved to Bamberg, setting off a chain reaction at the club. Only five players from that team remain, joined by eight newcomers and a new coach. VTB-League.com attempts to determine what we should expect from Kazan in the 2014-15 season. The Back Story Trinchieri's arrival in summer 2013 spurred Kazan to sign several big names. The new arrivals fit in quickly as UNICS built its identity on smothering defense, a deep bench and Andrew Goudelock's explosive scoring, which rescued the team on more than one occasion. The team had serious championship aspirations, finishing the VTB United League regular season with a 17-1 record, to earn a #1 seed in the playoffs. After breezing by Krasnye Krylia in the quarterfinals (3-0), the WhiteGreens ran into CSKA in the semifinals. Kazan was hampered in the series by an injury to big man Kostas Kaimakoglou. But their opponent, of course, posed the biggest problem. After the disappointment of the Euroleague Final Four, CSKA stormed back from a 2-0 hole in the quarterfinals vs. Lokomotiv-Kuban and entered the semis with restored confidence. The key moment in the series came in the first game. Despite trailing by more than ten points in the fourth quarter, CSKA made a late charge and forced overtime. The Army Men could not be stopped in the extra period, snatching the victory from a deflated UNICS squad, as well as home-court advantage in the series. CSKA did not look back, rolling to a 3-game series sweep. Kazan did make it all the way to the Eurocup finals. After impressive performances in the group stage and playoffs (20-2 record), UNICS could never find a groove against Valencia in the finals, settling for the silver medals. But the White-Greens did win one trophy last season. Thanks to victories against Khimki and Lokomotiv-Kuban, UNICS captured the Russian Cup. Though UNICS did not accomplish everything it set out to, the club's front office unanimously deemed the season a success. Kazan was once 21 again able to assemble a dangerous, talented team, add to its trophy collection, and earn a place in the Euroleague qualifying tournament. Quote: "Right up until the final minute of his contract, we were confident that head coach Trinchieri would stay with the team. Unfortunately, just as happened with Evgeny Pashutin, he said no at the very last moment. He said it had to do with family circumstances. It's unfortunate, because we wanted to continue working together. We were satisfied by the results reached by Trinchieri in his work with the team." - UNICS president Evgeny Bogachev. Offseason After a successful season, UNICS planned to stay on the same path. But the 2014 summer did not go at all as planned by the front office. It all began with Trinchieri's departure. Kazan believed until the very end that they would be able to extend his contract; however, the Italian coach unexpectedly decided to return to Europe in the middle of June. His biggest reason for leaving was his desire to be closer to his family. That set off a chain reaction. UNICS was unable to hold onto star Andrew Goudelock, allowed Nikita Kurbanov and Ian Vougioukas to leave, while parting ways with several more key performers. Despite extending Kostas Kaimakoglou and Sergey Bykov's contracts, Kazan faced the unenviable task of building a new team. Given the looming Euroleague qualifying tournament in late September, UNICS needed to put a squad together as soon as possible. Despite several difficulties, the club did a fantastic job, just as in 2013. The first task was to find a new head coach. About two weeks after Trinchieri's departure, UNICS announced it had signed a contract with Argiris Pedoulakis. We don't know yet what will happen in the upcoming Euroleague qualifying tournament, which means so much to the club, but so far it looks like UNICS made a great decision in picking Pedoulakis. The Greek coach is similar to Trinchieri in certain ways--he's got the energy, ambition, and charisma needed to unite his men and build a team. At the same time, Argiris is more experienced than his predecessor: Pedoulakis won the Greek league and competed in the Euroleague with Panathinaikos. We should also expect that Kazan will continue to emphasize defense, while featuring a more athletic and physically imposing lineup than last season. At the same time, this new UNICS is likely to be more disciplined and less dependent on its leading scorer (Goudelock's struggles down the stretch last season showed how important that can be). In order to help Pedoulakis bring the team back to the Euroleague and compete for a VTB United League championship, Kazan got busy in free 22 agency, signing eight players. Now all they have to do is live up to their potential on the court. Arrived: Argiris Pedoulakis (head coach), Keith Langford (Milan), Curtis Jerrells (Milan), James White (Reggio-Emilia), Valery Likhodei (Lokomotiv-Kuban), Vadim Panin (Nizhny Novgorod), Petr Gubanov (Nizhny Novgorod), Viktor Sanikidze (Saragoza), D'or Fischer (Bamberg). Extended: Sergey Bykov, Kostas Kaimakoglou, Pavel Antipov. Left: Chuck Eidson (retired), Andrew Goudelock (Fenerbahce), Luke Harangody (Valencia), Tywain McKee, Nikita Kurbanov (LokomotivKuban), Vladimir Veremeenko (Banvit), Maxim Sheleketo (Khimki), Evgeny Kolesnikov (Enisey), Pavel Sergeev (Enisey), Aleksandr Stulenkov (Nizhny Novgorod), Ian Vougioukas (Galatasaray). Getting Stronger UNICS has undergone some major changes, yet the team's learning curve should be helped by the fact that Kaimakoglou and Nikos Zisis, both major contributors, will understand what to expect from Greek compatriot Pedoulakis. It doesn't hurt, either, that newcomers Vadim Panin and Petr Gubanov(Nizhny Novgorod) and Keith Langford (pictured) and Curtis Jerrells (Milan), played together last season. Named to the 2013-14 All-Euroleague First Team and top scorer in the competition (17.6 points per game), Langford chose UNICS over several European powerhouses and the NBA. It's clear that Keith will be expected to take over for former Kazan leader Goudelock, who left for Fenerbahce. Langford is extremely talented and can score in a variety of ways. Don't expect the White-Greens to miss Goudelock too much. Jerrells, a tough, quick point guard from Texas, will pair with Langford to form one of the VTB United League's most intimidating backcourts. Curtis is an elite perimeter defender who should complement Langford perfectly. He can score, too, averaging 11.2 points per game in four seasons in the Euroleague. And he does a great job of running an offense. Panin and Gubanov, who reached the VTB United League finals last season with Nizhny Novgorod, as well as another Russian, Valery Likhodei, who lit up the Euroleague with his 3-point shooting, will give UNICS added depth and options. The previous season showed that forwards capable of playing more than one position are in high demand and each of these guys will be valuable members of that rotation, with UNICS slated to compete on two fronts. As we said before, Pedoulakis has personal experience with the Euroleague and he's noted more than once how important conditioning and physical size are in European basketball. UNICS's athleticism certainly got a boost with the arrival of James White and Viktor Sanikidze in Kazan. 23 White earned the nickname Flight 75 for his high-flying dunks. But he's more than just a one-trick pony, fully capable of creating offense on his own. Last season, he led Italy's Reggio Emilia to a EuroChallenge championship while averaging 17.1 points per game. Sanikidze will also put on a show for the Kazan fans, but he's capable of much more. His size, mobility, effort and skills make Viktor a major factor on offense and on defense, where he can cover both the '3' and '4' positions. With the backcourt and wings largely accounted for, UNICS made an important addition to the frontcourt by bringing in the experienced D'or Fischer. The big man can rebound and stretch defenses with his mid-range jumper. His blocking prowess, meanwhile, will make opponents think twice about attacking the paint. Quote: "I believe in the team, I believe in the club's collective. If we're united, we'll have good results. Our maximum goal for the Euroleague is to reach the Final Four. If we have to play in the Eurocup again, we hope to win a championship. We look to make the VTB United League finals. I'm optimistic. We have an excellent, hard-working squad. We're going to work, strive for victories, and win." - Evgeny Bogachev. Outlook Just five players remain from UNICS's roster last year. In addition, half of the new roster played for national teams over the summer, which means that Kazan got the full team together for the first time just a week before the start of the all-important Euroleague qualifiers. Obviously, major turnover and rushed preparations aren't the best recipe for a successful performance in the qualifying tournament to European basketball's most prestigious competition. But UNICS will still be favored in the competition, which opens on September 23 in Charleroi. Last year, Khimki failed to qualify for the Euroleague, but recovered quickly and enjoyed a terrific regular season. As for UNICS, the team likely won't start to peak until the spring. It will take a few months for each player to learn his place and feel comfortable with his teammates. Once again, we must return to the team's summer makeover. Few will disagree that UNICS enjoyed a successful offseason and will be one of the league's top contenders this season thanks to its talented, deep roster. But it's also true that it can take several years to build a serious team. It's possible that the club won't reach its full potential in the upcoming season. But UNICS must try to do so anyway. Pedoulakis and co. are ready to take Kazan to the top right away. 24 Schedule & Results Regular season in Group “A” Date/Week Round 1 16 October Teams Result Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. Unics Kazan Nizhny Novgorod vs. Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari Real Madrid vs. Zalgiris Kaunas 82:76 24 October Unics Kazan vs. Real Madrid 75:76 24 October Zalgiris Kaunas vs. Nizhny Novgorod 97:63 24 October Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari vs. Anadolu Efes Istanbul 75:82 17 October 17 October 88:86 80:71 Round 2 Round 3 30 October 30 October 30 October Unics Kazan vs. Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. Zalgiris Kaunas Real Madrid vs. Nizhny Novgorod Round 4 5 November 6 November 7 November Real Madrid vs. Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari Nizhny Novgorod vs. Anadolu Efes Istanbul Zalgiris Kaunas vs. Unics Kazan Round 5 13 November Unics Kazan vs. Nizhny Novgorod 14 November Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. Real Madrid 25 14 November Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari vs.Zalgiris Kaunas Round 6 21 November Unics Kazan vs. Anadolu Efes Istanbul 21 November Zalgiris Kaunas vs. Real Madrid 21 November Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari vs.Nizhny Novgorod Round 7 27 November Real Madrid vs. Unics Kazan 28 November Nizhny Novgorod vs. Zalgiris Kaunas 28 November Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari Round 8 04 December Nizhny Novgorod vs. Real Madrid 04 December Zalgiris Kaunas vs. Anadolu Efes Istanbul Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari vs.Unics Kazan 04 December Round 9 12 December Unics Kazan vs. Zalgiris Kaunas 12 December Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. Nizhny Novgorod Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari vs. Real Madrid 12 December Round 10 TBD TBD TBD Real Madrid vs. Anadolu Efes Istanbul Zalgiris Kaunas vs. Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari Nizhny Novgorod vs. Unics Kazan 26 Standings / Regular season 27 Teams relationships: UNICS Kazan vs. DINAMO Sassari UNICS Kazan and DINAMO Sassari never came across playing official games at the international arena
