one youth + one year = two lives changed
2013 was a year of change, growth, and stabilization for Bolder
Options.
2012 was a year filled with transition in staffing and funding. The
leadership of Bolder Options made the strategic decision to slow
down and regroup to better focus on meeting the mission of the
organization. Kari Davis began her tenure as Chief Operating
Officer. In addition, 4 new staff joined Bolder Options in 2013;
Heidi Mastrud (Outreach Director), Sandi Williams (Executive
Assistant), Natalie Koness (Mentoring Program Coordinator), and
Elysia Bires (Health & Wellness Coordinator). Our programming,
events and fundraising continue to grow and expand.
Like the youth of Bolder Options, we are focused on positive
change and succeeding at our goals.
Highlights of our programming include excellent mentoring,
health and wellness, and tutoring outcomes. We were highlighted
by MNSights magazine as one of the top 20 Minnesota non-profits
serving at-risk youth. We celebrated Bolder Options' merger with
the V3 youth triathlon program leading us towards our strategic
goals of establishing a continuum of supportive services for youth
and increasing the number of youth involved in high quality
programming. The first triathlon season was successful and we
look forward to increasing the number of youth triathlon
participants we can serve in 2014.
Thank you to our generous donors and dedicated volunteers.
Thank you for your support and dedication to this organization. In
2013, we engaged over 1600 youth, and proved that we are
fulfilling our mission of Teaching Youth to Succeed in ALL of Life’s
Races. Our success was due to those who gave their time and
talents to the organization. We look forward to celebrating with
you in our 20th Year!

BOLD youth and their mentors cross the finish line together at least three
times each year in running and biking events. These achievements are only
possible due to the time and support of donors and volunteers. The
generosity of Walser and their commitment to Bolder Options' mission has
brought many Walser employees out to volunteer at events like Drive for
Kids and the Bolder Dash. Walser's employees have even made their way
into the ranks of mentors.

Bolder Options named one of Minnesota’s Top 20
We are delighted that Philanthropedia, a division of
GuideStar USA Inc, named Bolder Options a top-20 MN
nonprofit serving at-risk youth. We are proud of our
volunteers, staff, and program participants who help us
make an impact.
How was this ranking determined? “Minnesota experts were
asked to recommend up to four high-impact nonprofits and
up to two promising start-up nonprofits working in the field
of educational support for at-risk youth in Minnesota.
Experts were encouraged to consider a variety of different
types of nonprofits serving at-risk youth of all ages. Top-20
nonprofits could work on advocacy, training, in school
support, out-of-school instruction, and more. ” See the
whole story at http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/

Honoring Davisco’s commitment to
Bolder Options
Davisco Foods International stepped up to
support Bolder Options programming with
a three year commitment of $100,000 per
year. Their belief in the positive influence of
Bolder Options could not be more
appreciated. “Because of Davisco’s
commitment, we’ll be able to serve more
kids, continue providing excellent
programming for youth in the Twin Cities
and Rochester, and ensure that we remain
the most impactful mentoring program
serving 10-14 year-olds in the nation,” says
President, Darrell Thompson.

Stepping Up to the Challenge
Tony Ebertz, VP - Peoples Bank and
Bolder Options Advisory Board Member
When Tony Ebertz learned about
Bolder Options, he immediately
decided to help make a positive
impact on the organization. He
launched a golf tournament that
would engage new supporters and
raise funds for Bolder Options' youth development programs. The
Bolder Golf Classic was born. The event he coordinated raised over
$16,000 in its first year and Tony was so inspired to continue his
good work that he became a member of Bolder Options' advisory
board.
We can’t say thank you enough to volunteer leaders like Tony.

ANDERSON RACE MANAGEMENT
Thanks to Anderson Race Management (ARM) the Bolder Dash 5K/10K,
Fun Run and Bike Tour is coming back bigger and better in 2014. ARM
also helps Bolder Options by promoting the organization at community
races managed by ARM across the metro area. The company helps us
meet our mission by letting our pairs run free at many of their races.
Anderson Race Management is helping our youth experience the power
of the finish line. “Building solid foundations through healthy lifestyles is
a collective, community-wide effort. We, at Anderson Race
Management, are proud of the work that Bolder Options continues to
do and of the impact you’re making on our future,” Mary Anderson.

Achieving Academic Success
2013 Tutoring Outcomes
Youth involved in Bolder Options' tutoring
program proved once again that with the
support of caring adults and with high
expectations, all kids can improve
academically. In 2013, 10-14 year-olds in our
program increased both their math and
reading scores at a rate 10% higher than their
grade-level peers nationwide. Over the course
of the year, they increased their reading scores
an average of 60.4% and math scores an
average of 255%!

Through a generous gift from Wells Fargo, Bolder Options
alumni will now have a quiet and well-equipped place to
study and catch up on their school work. The grant also
allowed a group of youth to participate in the project
planning process, construction and design of the space.
Here, a group of youth help choose the furnishings for the
new alumni center.
