FOLD ROLLS
The most critical factor ¡n controlling the
paper stock being folded, ¡s the design and
condition of the fold rolls.
Worn rollers, or rollers manufactured from the
wrong material or the wrong specifications,
may prevent you from getting a good,
consistent fold. Trying to control today's slick
stock with worn rollers is like trying to drive
your car on snow with bald tires. You will not
have the grip to maintain positive control.
Years ago, we could run almost anything
using steel fold rolls. We learned that with the
changes in paper and printing processes,
steel rolls just didn't have enough grip for
certain jobs.
Fold roll gripping problems were virtually
eliminated through the introduction of the
combination fold roll. The "combo" fold roll
consists of alternating steel and urethane
segments. It combines the durability of the
steel roll with the grip of the solid urethane roll.
The "combo" roll has become the standard
type roll being supplied on new floor model
folders manufactured today.
Baumfolder can supply brand new fold rolls,
manufactured to the original design
specifications, for both current production
models and older model Baumfolders. In many
cases your older folder can be updated with
the installation of combo rolls to replace the
original steel rolls.
HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR FOLD ROLLS ARE WORN?
The performance of your Baumfolder, like
any piece of equipment, will gradually
deteriórate as parts wear through normal
use. A point will be reached when the set up
time and other factors, such as spoilage ,
will start to affect production. At this point
you should contact your authorized Baum
dealer to have one of their Service
Technicians make some simple checks to
determine how much wear has occurred.
Here are a couple of ways you can check
your fold rolls for wear:
Steel Rolls
To check for wear on steel rolls, you can use
three 2x12 inch strips of 20# bond or
equivalent stock. Adjust the rolls down so
they are set for constant pressure. Roll a
strip in by hand on each end of the rolls and
one in the center. Check the pressure of

each strip. If the rolls are worn, you will not
have any pressure on the center strip. The
complete set of rolls, including the right angle
sections, should be checked.
Solid Rubber / Urethane Rolls
To check solid rubber/urethane rolls , visually
check for uneven wear. Also, after a period of
time, rubber rolls can glaze over and have a
slick, shiny appearance. If these conditions
are present, the rolls should be replaced or
recovered.
Combination Urethane/Steel Rolls
For Combination rolls, visually inspect the
Urethane bands for wear or damage. If the
Urethane bands are damaged or worn below
the steel, the rolls should be replaced or
recovered.

SHOULD 1 R E C O V E R OR BUY NEW?
Baumfolder can recover your Combination
Urethane/Stcel fold rolls using the same process
and material originally used to manufacture
your fold rolls when they vvere brand new.
Baumfolder w i l l grind the recovered rolls to the
same dimensions and tolerances required o f
brand new rolls.
Recovering existing fold rolls can be a good altemative
to buying new rolls. Here are some guide lines to help
determine which is the best choice.
When your rolls are received for recovering,
they are first inspected to be sure they can
properly be recovered. The majority o f the rolls
can be successfully recovered. Once in a while
a roll has been damaged so badly during normal
use that it can't be recovered to Baumfolder's
specification. I f damage is found during
inspection you w i l l be contacted to discuss the
options before proceeding vvith recovering.
Next all the oíd urethane must be removed from
each o f the grooves and the surface o f the
groove cleaned to insure proper bonding o f the
new urethane segment to the steel. Baumfolder
Urethane is especially formulated for m á x i m u m
grip and long life.
The urethane segments are precisión ground to
the original Baumfolder specifications that were
used to originally manufacture the roll. The
fmished roll is reinspected to insure it meets our
quality standards and then carefully packed for
rcturn shipment.
Y O U SHOULD CONSIDER R E C O V E R I N G :
1) When price is a primary consideration.
2) When you can be without your folder while the rolls
are being recovered. Remember your folder w i l l be
dovvn until the rolls come back.
3) When the steel body o f your roll is in good condition.
4) I f you do not plan to keep this folder for a long time.
5) This folder is primarily used as a backup to a
newer folder.

1) When you want the absolute best quality by having a
completely new fold roll.
2) When you want to have the mínima) amount o f
downtime for your folder.
3) When the steel body o f your rolls is badly w o m or
bent.

Baumfolder has Tune Up Kits available for the Ultrafold 714 Table Top Folder and most popular
models of Baumfolder Floor Model Folders.Your Baumfolder was built to provide many years of
service. However, like any piece of mechanical equipment, some wear takes place during the
normal day-to-day operation of your folder.
Some routine maintenance needs to be done on a regular basis to keep your folder in good
running condition . Thls is similar to having your car tuned up and the oil changed to keep it in top
running condition.
The tune up kits contain the parts which need to be replaced on a regular basis. Feed tires,
retard tires, pump filters, lube canisters, etc. may be included. The actual parts will vary
depending on the particular model. Tune up Kits are a convenient and economic way to keep
your folder in good condition. Considerable money can be saved by ordering a tune-up kit as
compared to the price of individual parts.

WHY BUY A R E B U I L D K I T
Why buy a rebuild kit instead of just replacing the rolls or selected parts? In some situations. rerlacin; jusi
the fold rolls will correct the problem. However, most of the time, other critical parts are wcm arrd r.eed to
be replaced in addition to the rolls.
Baumfolder Rebuild Kits typically include:
l )Fold Rolls-These are the heart of the folder. No rebuild is complete without replacing the rafe Fold
rolls provide grip and control to the sheet being folded.
2) Bushings/Bearings- Replacing a roll without replacing the oíd bushings/or bearings may O H
inconsistent folding. Since these parts are relatively inexpensive, it is good practice to pr •• \ : . ±
fold rolls with new bearing surfaces.
3) Roller Eccentrics.- These are the pivot point for your roller boxing. As they wear you get thay trt ytur
rollers resulting in inconsistent folding.
4) Register Tapes- As register tapes get worn and frayed, they can cause the sheet to srurrtble g: :r.g
the register, resulting in inconsistent folding.
5) Deflectors- Over a period of time, deflectors can get nicked or damaged resulting ir. ¡'-a: 57_rrtbhr.g.
6) V-Belts - Since belts are a wear item and are inexpensive, it is best to replace the— as rarr : í the rebutid.

7) Roll Gears- The roll gears are normally difficult to get off the journal of the oíd rolls. K K u a good

The DCU-600 Batch Counter ¡s a compact, state-of-the-art batch counting system.
This batch counter can be used on either a Baumfolder Tabletop or Floor Model folder.
The DCU-600 will count and sepárate folded material coming off the stacker into
predetermined quantities up to 999 pieces. It can also be used as a Total Counter ¡f
you do not want to batch. The Batch Counter consists of the DCU-600 Counter Head,
a Microscan II Scanner, a batchlng device and instructions.

The counter features a large (0.56-¡nch high) six digit LED display. A front panel
pushbutton switch gives you the option of displaying total count, total batches, or
number of pieces counted in current batch. The DCU-600 comes with a universal
mounting bracket which is easily adaptable to your model folder.
The batch size is easily set using the thumbwheel switches located on the front panel.
You can set any batch size from zero to 999 pieces. The length of time the batching
device is activated is adjustable from 0.1 seconds to 10 seconds. The DCU-600 can be
ordered with either a solenoid valve to interrupt the vacuum to the sucker wheel for air
feed machines or with a lift wheel kit to skew the folded piece at the stacker to sepárate
the batches.
The Microscan II scanner is a modulated, infrared device that is not affected by ambient
light and features a heavy-duty magnet for easy mounting to the fold píate.

GATEFOLD ATTACHMENT
In order to do what is commonly called a "double gatefold" on your Baumfolder,
you w i l l need a Gatefold attachment. This attachment consists o f a special fold píate
and a solid state electrical control. The special fold píate is required to fold a single
gatefold in half. The folding fíngers o f the gatefold unit prevent the single gatefold
from opening up during the final fold. This attachment adds a folding "niche" that
can easily pay for itself.
Baumfolder has Gatefold Attachments available for both current production floor
model Baumfolders such as the Baum 2020 as vvell as for most previous production
floor model Baumfolders.

PERF-SCORE ATTACHMENT
The Baum Ultrascore Perf-Score Attachment was designed speclflcally to add versatllity to your
Baum 714 Table Top folder. It allows you to use your 714 as a perforating, scoring, and slitting
machine in addltlon to foldlng. You won't need an extra machine dedicated to do an occasional
perf, score or slitting job.
The Ultrascore can be ¡nstalled or removed by the operator ¡n minutes. You can easily convert
your 714 folder to a scoring machine and back to a folder whenever needed. The scoring shafts
have mlcrometer adjustments for precisely controlling the depth of the score for different types
and weights of stock. The Ultrascore uses an upper score blade that mates to a lower scoring die
to produce a score similar to that produced by a press.
The Perf/Score attachment comes standard with the followlng accessories. Additional accessories

FLOOR MODEL SCORING ATTACHMENTS
The Floor Model Scoring Attachment gives you letterpress-quality scoring, perforating
and slitting on your floor model folder.
This accessory lets you score and fold cover stock and other printed material in a single
in-line operation. The special female and male scoring wheels provide a high-quality
score by stretching the fiber o f the stock.
By scoring on the folder, you control the placement o f the score to compénsate for
variations in the printed material. It also frees up the press for other jobs.
These scoring machines are precisión pieces o f equipment manufactured to extremelv
tight tolerances. Heavy-duty construction, large diameter scoring shafts and precisión
ground scoring wheels, ensure an even and accurate score.

MICRO-PERF ATTACHMENT
The Baum Microperf produces an extremely fine line of
perforation ( 72 per inch), which is ideal for tear-offs such
as self mailers with a coupon or reply card. The microperf
produces a crushed rather than a cut perforation, so the
sheets lay fíat to feed better through a copier or láser
printer.
The Baum Microperf Attachment consists of a Microperf
Blade Holder Assembly (complete with microperf blade),
and a Microperf Collar Assembly (complete with
replaceable microperf ring). The microperf assembly can
be installed on any Baum 714 Table Top which has a Perf/
Score Attachment. It can also be installed on any Baum 2015, 2018, or 2020 Floor Model
Folder which has adjustable slitter shafts. It will also work on other model Baum Floor Models
with Adjustable Slitter Shafts. This can not be used on folders w i t h fixed slitter shafts.

KNOCK OUT PERF ASSEMBLY
A special Knock-Out Perforator is available for improved perfect-binding operations and saddle
stitching on your Baumfolder.
When signatures are brought from the folder, they are vacuum fed on most types of binders
and stitchers. With some perforations, the vacuum can pulí the sheets apart at the
perforations, causing problems with feeding. By substituting the knock-out perforator, the
signature holds together, thus simplifying the binding process. It also allows the air to escape
when folding all bookwork, and provides an improved adhesive surface for perfect binding.
When using the knock-out perforator, the punched out pieces are separated and stripped from
the folded pieces.
The knock-out perforator is available for Baumfolder floor model folders with 7/8" and 1-1/8"
diameter slitter shafts.

BAUM WET S C O R E
The Baum Wet Score is a revolutionary wet-scoring system for use on floor-model Baumfolders. This
unit uses fine needle applicators to apply an extremely thin, consistent une o f an alcohol/water mixture to
the stock as it moves dovvn the register table. The alcohol/water mixture conditions the papcr fibers to
assist in making a right angle fold.
The most common applications for a wet score are:
•
When folding cover stock and other types o f paper which tend to crack or split.
•
When cross-grain folding. The Baum Wet Score temporarily neutralizes the effects o f the paper
grain, enabling tighter folds.
•
When running maps and other multiple-fold pieces, and especially when folding is required in the
8-page (right angle) folding section. The use o f a wet-score makes the fold tighter, resulting i n easier
handling, fewer jams, and more speed.
The Baum Wet Score has an electronic valve fhat shuts o f f the flow o f liquid to the needles when nothing
is being fed down the register table. This protects the folder from excess moisture and eliminates
hazardous puddling.
The unit comes standard with four lines o f score which can be moved anywhere along the length o f the
mounting bar. This gives you a wide variety o f scoring options. The amount o f fluid going to each needle
is easily adjustable to provide just the right amount o f alcohol/water for the j o b being run.

STATIC ELIMINATORS
Static electricity, as it pertains to paper folders, can come frorn a number o f different sources. One source
is through friction as the sheet travels dovvn the register table and during the folding process. The static
can result in inconsistent folding and j a m ups, as the folded piecc exits the fold roilers. l f this is the typc
o f static problcm you are experiencing , then a Baumfolder Static eliminator should help you by
reducing the amount o f static.
I f the static is all ready in the paper before it is loaded on the feeder, and you are having problems
separating the sheets or feeding it, this type static eliminator w i l l not help.
The Baumfolder Static Eliminator consists o f two static bars and a povver supply that opérales on
115v/60Hz. The static eliminator generales an ionization field that neutralizes the static charge.
