ManystudieshavebeendoneamongJewishand
OrthodoxpopulaFons,buttherehasnotbeenany
validquanFtaFveresearchamongthosewhohave
leItheOrthodoxworld.Andwhiletherehave
beenquiteafewexcellentmemoirswri1enby
peoplewhohaveleItheChasidishandother
Orthodoxgroups,theoldsaying“thepluralof
anecdoteisnotdata”sFllringstrue.
Thegoalofthissurveywastogivethisgroup–a
fledglingsegmentoftheJewishcommunitythat
hasnotbeenquanFtaFvelystudied–avoice.We
wantedtobe1erunderstandtheexperiencesof
thosewhohavetransiFonedawayfromtheir
Orthodoxcommunityoforigin,orwhoare
grapplingwiththerelatedissues.
Tothatend,theoverallstudyincludedthebroad
swathofsegmentsintheOrthodoxworld:
Chasidic,YeshivishandModernOrthodox.This
reportfocusesonthesurveyrespondentsfrom
theModernOrthodoxSegment,i.e.,thosewho
haveleItheirModernorthodoxcommunity.
ThesurveywasfundedbyNishmaResearch,a
ConnecFcut-basedmarketresearchfirmserving
theJewishworld.InaddiFontoproviding
customizedresearchservicestoclients,Nishma’s
missionincludesconducFngoneprobonostudy
annuallyonatopicofinterestandvaluetotheJewish
people–specifically,researchthatwillpromotemore
listening,appreciaFonandcooperaFonamongthe

ManyofushaveheardofthephenomenonofpeopleventuringforthfromtheOrthodoxworldandtryingtofinda
placeinthebroaderAmericansociety.OIenscornedbytheirfamiliesandcommuniFesforhavinggoneOTD*(“offthe
derech”-offthepath),theirstories,astoldinanumberofrecentmemoirs,havebeengripping.
WhathasbeenmissingunFlnowisquanFtaFvedataonthistrend.NishmaResearch,aConnecFcut-basedresearch
firmthatfocusesontheJewishcommunity,hasjustcompletedthefirst-everlarge-scalesurveyofthisdemographic.
With885responsesfromacrosstheOrthodoxspectrum,thissurveygivesvoicetoagrowingsegmentoftheJewish
community.Respondentsprovideddeeplypersonalandpoignantresponsesaboutthejourneytheyhavetaken,their
idenFty,pracFces,beliefsandrelaFonships.Theytolduswhattheywentthrough,whattheymighthavedone
differently,andgaveadvicetootherswhoareconsideringleavingtheirOrthodoxcommunityforadifferentlifestyle.

butwhonolongerconsiderthemselvestofullybeamemberofthe

whowerenotespeciallysuccessfulintermsofda<ngwithintheOrthodoxcommunity(perhapsduetonotconformingtoOrthodox
normsinvariousways,despitebeingobservant)tendedtomovefurtherawayfromOrthodoxy.
•  Theuniverseisafartoocomplicatedplacetobeexplainedawayusingbronzeagemythologyandmorallessonssupposedlyimpartedby
