level, it is wonderfully protected from the wind
and sun.
Built to honour the Abbot of Cîteaux and his
wine, it consists both of a country dwelling and
winemaking buildings in the heart of the Clos.
This cellar remains a model of architecture, like
the vathouse, which forms a cloister (4 galleries
of 30 metres by 10 around the central courtyard)
and equipped with 4 gigantic capstan oak
winepresses.
The cellar and vathouse complement each other
perfectly. The cellar, which can house 2000
barrels of wine, was built in the 12th century.
Eight pillars of stone, two of which are of a
piece, support the ceiling. A few main beams
were replaced in 1947. Though built at ground
The vathouse was built partly in the 12th century,
partly in subsequent centuries. In the centre of the
courtyard, visitors can see the "Porteur de
Benaton" (wicker basket bearer), the last work of
the Burgundian sculptor Henri Bouchard, a
member of the "Institut" (1875-1961).

… THE WORK OF AN ABBOT OF CÎTEAUX
As for the Château, Dom Jean Loisier, 48th
Abbot of Cîteaux, built it in 1551. Its square
towers remind one of the Middle Ages. The
entrance gate suggests the dawn of the
Renaissance, in a style similar to Henry II's
Louvre Palace.
After being neglected for most of the 19th
century, the Château du Clos de Vougeot was
acquired and restored by a wine-merchant,
Léonce Bocquet from 1891 onwards. The
architect Félix Vionnois was in charge of the long
and costly works which, while bearing the mark
of turn of the century taste, must be credited with
the saving of this endangered masterpiece.
Subsequently, the Château du Clos de Vougeot
belonged to a Burgundian member of
Parliament, Etienne Camuzet, who gladly put it
at the disposal of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du
Tastevin and transferred it to that Order in 1944.
With the passing years, the Château du Clos de
Vougeot which had been seriously damaged
during the second world war was lovingly
restored by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du
Tastevin and its many friends.
In 1949, it was classified as a "historic
building" and it is open to the public all the
year round.

The estate of Clos de Vougeot was the work of
the neighbouring Abbey of Cîteaux founded in
1098. Contemporary with Saint Bernard, it
initially consisted of donations made between
1109 and 1115. Located between les Echézeaux
and le Musigny, its gentle slope stretches from
the Côte to the plain. Today, it covers 50 hectares,
95 ares and 76 centiares enclosed by walls.
For nearly 7 centuries, the Clos de Vougeot
estate remained the property of the Abbey of
Cîteaux. It acquired considerable renown, which
makes it one of the most eminent "crus" of
Burgundy along with Chambertin.
After being declared "National Property" during
the Revolution, the vineyard and the Château
were auctioned. In 1818, after several transfers,
they were acquired by Jules Ouvrard, son of a
famous speculator and contractor to the imperial
army. This estate flattered his vanity and
impressed him: he abandoned the Château to
live in the nearby château of Gilly, likewise
founded by the Cistercians, but he devoted all
his energies to the vineyard.
Thus, the Clos de Vougeot remained a monopoly
until 1861. When Jules Ouvrard died, his heirs
(Rochechouard, La Garde, and Montalembert)
put the Clos de Vougeot up for sale several times.
In 1889, it was bought by 6 wine-merchants of
the area. One of them, Léonce Bocquet, became
the owner of the Château and did considerable
restauration work in the Renaissance part.
Today, some 80 owners share the vineyards of
the estate.

CHÂTEAU DU CLOS DE VOUGEOT
Since 1946 the Confrérie des Chevaliers du
Tastevin has been celebrating Burgundy, with its
gastronomy and its great wines, at the Château
du Clos de Vougeot, in a spirit of hospitality,
generosity and human warmth.
Today the Château du Clos de Vougeot has
become the centre for good taste, joie de vivre
and good cheer in Burgundy.
National and international firms welcome their
guests there for prestigious meetings; clubs hold
their gala evenings there; families come for get-
togethers on important occasions; artists make
use of the prestigious surroundings as a setting
for their talent.
Behind the ancient oak doors of the Château du
Clos de Vougeot, nothing is left to chance. A
team of men and women with experience in the
organisation of major events is ready to meet
requirements of those who wish to organise
lunches or dinners where professionalism meets
with Burgundian conviviality, and adaptable
know-how with qualities of welcome and
hospitality.

Attending to the "roasting spits, ovens,
cauldrons and other cooking hardware" of the
Château du Clos de Vougeot, the Chefs of the
Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin are
constantly at work.
How does one serve 1200 perfectly timed
oeufs en meurette in just a few minutes ?
Georges Legendre from La Croix Blanche in
Nuits-Saint-Georges was the first chef of the
Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. In those
days, the dishes came from Nuits or Dijon.
On the occasion of the 100th chapter, in 1953,
kitchens were built in the Château du Clos de

Vougeot. Alexandre Dumaine inaugurated them.
Jean Parizot, Paul Toulouse, Robert Tournebize,
then Georges Garin, Jean Fargeau, Roger
Bonneau and finally Hubert Hugot succeeded
one another in the kitchens.
Like the chefs, the Frères cellériers (winewaiters) do not remain idle. They serve over
1 000 bottles per evening.
In 1994, the Château du Clos de Vougeot was
listed as an Outstanding place of interest for
Taste by the Conseil National des Arts
Culinaires, at the request of Ministry of Culture.

wide repertoire of Burgundian songs : La Bique
de Bouze, Joyeux enfants de la Bourgogne,
Partons en vendanges, Chevaliers de la Table
Ronde... Between these songs, there are joyful
bans bourguignons (Burgundian cheers).
A growing success led them to Nuits-SaintGeorges when the Confrérie des Chevaliers du
Tastevin was founded. They owe their name to a
piece which Pierre Moriss wrote for their benefit :
« Here are the Cadets of Burgundy,
The minstrels and servants of wine,
Keen are their eyes and ruddy their faces,
Here are the Cadets of Burgundy,
Always drinkers, never drunkards,
Following a straight path ».
They don cellarmen's clothes : caps and black
aprons. Léon Rappeneau, Grand Massier of the
Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin from 1952
to 1980, has not been forgotten.
Accompanied by a small band, the Cadets de
