Forgotten Resolutions
Februarys Outlook for 2016
As Vice President of Activities for NCC, my forecast for 2016
is BUSY! We will be going places we have not gone before and
doing things we never thought of. This year we will have more
overnight adventures. We will be taking more trips out of state
as well as doing things close to home. To do this I need the
help of you, the members of NCC. Your suggestions will help
make this year one for the record books.
For those who like to see the back roads, we will be doing more
cruises this year. For those who feel the need for speed, we
will have speed and performance events. For our Shiners, there
will be new car shows along with some of our favorite car
shows from the past. If you like to eat, (and who doesn’t) the
possibilities are endless to where we might go.
How are your New Year Resolutions coming along? I have
been asked numerous times about my resolutions and my response is always the same…I don’t make resolutions. When
we were all younger, it was very fashionable while in the presence of college friends, to announce your resolutions. Whether
it is to lose weight, get in shape, stop smoking or get organized,
chances are you have already broken your resolutions. Based
on national statistics, only 8% of Americans attain their resolutions. Ok, so maybe statistics would only be beneficial in a
game of trivial pursuit, but it’s a fun fact of one of our national
obsessions.
The only resolutions I will attempt to make are those that are
related to the NCC and members. Although they are true resolutions, they are more attuned to goals. Fortunately, the NCC
has a wide variety of personalities, backgrounds, ideas and
leadership skills, and our goals are common and interlocked.
Subsequently, our goals should be to build relationships and not
barriers, develop a clearer vision of making our new members
welcomed and offer solutions to the many challenges facing
our club in the New Year. This can be easily accomplished
with everyone’s commitment and efforts.
Like the count down for the New Year, NCC is in its own
count down for the 2016 Events. It all begins on January 24th
will the always uniquely different “Have It My Way” Rally
hosted and organized by George Kimble. You can count on
this being something different and not your run of the mill Rally. Three weeks later is our annual Valentine’s Day Cruise
hosted and organized by Butch and Janice Geng. This year we
are cruising Tennessee’s pristine back roads to beautiful Henry
Horton State Park. Janice says we already have a large group
who have signed up, so don’t delay signing up for this delightful cruise. Thanks to George, Butch and Janice for getting us
off to a roaring start for 2016.
We still have two openings on the NCC Board for 2016; these
are Charity and Competition Chairs. I’m told that we do have
some interest in the Competition Chair, but I want to encourage
our members to seriously think about joining us on the Board in
these two important positions.
I think I speak for all of us by saying; enough with winter already…I’m ready for spring. Thanks for a great 2015 and let’s
have an even better 2016.
Here are a few of the things that are on the calendar for the first
several months of 2016:
February 13 will find us on the Valentine Cruise to Henry
Horton State Park for lunch.
February 27 we will be touring Lane’s Automobile Museum
in Nashville.
February 27 there is a Track X Event at NCM Motorsports
Park where you can hone your autocross skills before the season gets underway.
March 12 will find us at Beach Bend Drag Strip for Test and
Tune Day. Track opens at noon and closes at 5 pm. You can
make as many passes as you want.
April 15 & 16 finds us headed to Keeneland Race Track in
Lexington KY to watch the ponies’ run. While there we will
take part in doing some sight seeing.
April 16 is the Kars 4 Kids Car Show in Brentwood. We have
taken part in this show for several years. It benefits the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home.
April 28 – 30 is the NCM Bash in Bowling Green KY.
May 14th finds us Cruising to Bell Buckle TN. for lunch then
on to Parish Patch Inn located in Normandy TN. for the night.
That evening we will be dining at Cortner’s Mill Restaurant.
These are just a few dates we have planned so far. As you
know, we will be adding to the calendar as time goes by. If you
have any suggestions for places to go or people to see, please
let me know.

Member Bob Borgmann spoke about his lead of a group of 6
NCC Members in the Alvin C. York Veterans Day Parade in
Murfreesboro TN. The NCC group was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Veterans Association.
NCC INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY discussed:
If inclement weather is a factor/concern on the evening an
NCC Meeting is, the NCC will follow the Metro Nashville Public School System’s (MNPS) Inclement Weather School Cancellation Policy. The NCC Club Meeting will then be cancelled
if MNPS closes their schools for the day. Members will be notified of this action by Email.
Dave advised that “NCC Insurance Cards” with pertinent contact and liability claim handling information will be created and
distributed to all Membership in the near future.
Ken described known NCM Events scheduled to date.

Ken plans to schedule Track X work days for the Club as well
as schedule a Tour of the Corvette Plant in Bowling Green KY.
NCC Treasurer, Mr. Pat Thompson:
Gave “End of Year Financial Report for 2015”.
Advised Membership that the 2015 Financial Records/Books
were also available for their viewing after the Meeting concluded.
Mr. Pat also advised the Membership that the Club’s new NCC
Decals will be available to them in the near future.
NCC Webmaster, George Kimble:
George is continuing his efforts to work on and improve the
NCC Website.
George has posted each individual member’s Master Membership points onto the Club’s Website.
Encouraged Members to take photos at any Club Event and
then forward them on to him.
George thanked Member Terry Durham for his “Club Video
Presentation” shown at the NCC Christmas Party on 12 December 2015.
Membership Director, Chip Mezger:
Chip extended his Thanks to former Membership Director,
Patricia Thompson for her assistance in his transition to this
position for 2016.
Current NCC Membership total to date is 210.
Master Membership, Ken Hoffman:
Has passed the signed 2015 NCCC Waivers on to current NCC
Secretary, Patricia Thompson for record keeping purposes.
NCCC requested that these records be kept for a minimum of 3
years.
Waivers must be signed by each individual NCC Member (and
their guests) at all NCC and NCCC Events and Activities. The
Waivers will be maintained during the current year by the Master Membership, then forwarded onto the NCC Secretary at the
end of the year for record keeping purposes.

Facebook activity and “likes” is increasing and site is continuing to do well.

Has scheduled a T.O.G. Committee Meeting for Tuesday, 26
January at the Santa Fe Restaurant on Music Valley Drive in
Nashville TN. TOG Committee is collecting door prizes and
the Sponsorship Drive is starting.

NCC Governor, Martin Workman:
Martin is submitting an article about “Racing” to the Club’s
Newsletter, Tiresmoke for February 2016.
Martin encouraged Members who are interested in attending
the NCCC Convention being held in Omaha NE from 17 July to
22 July 2016, to sign up on 1 February 2016 when the Event
Sign-Up becomes available on the NCCC website.
Had Application Forms available for those Members who wish
to sign up their family members for the FCOA (Future Corvette
Owners of America) Club which is sponsored by the NCCC.
More details available in Martin’s report.
Advised the Membership that Member Dale Johnson is selling
Club apparel and he is available this evening if you are interested.
Funfest Chairwoman, Barb Huebel:
Barb updated Membership regarding the Funfest Event held in
Effingham IL from 15 September to 18 September 2016. In

FEBRUARY GOVERNOR’S REPORT
The 2016 autocross season is not too far in the future and we
should be thinking about how we can have some fun in our Corvettes. Many of you are already itching to get started, but
there’s one very important thing that you need to consider and
that is: What can I do to make myself a better (faster) driver? One of the things that will accomplish your goal of being
faster is by walking the course. This important step is often
overlooked by many novice and veteran drivers alike.
The first reason to walk a course is so you don’t get lost! If
you don’t get lost, you save yourself some embarrassment and
you don’t waste time. But if you merely follow the practice of
“how good is my first run,” how can you hope it will be as valuable as a fast time at the end of the day? The fact is, if you
merely find you’re doing a lot of learning on your first and possibly second runs, a lot of the learning could have been done
before you put the air in your tires. Let’s face it, auto crossers
get very little track time. The course is different at most all
events and the fastest time in your class WINS! So one can say
without question that learning the course is a valuable method
of improving one’s performance as a driver. Learning to read
the course is a valuable aspect to help you achieve your goal of
winning. Keep in mind, a lot of drivers just jump in their cars
and waste their first run by “learn-as-I-go-attitude.” Trust me,
that doesn’t work.

NCCC Insurance. There has been a lot of questions lately
about the insurance provided to our club through NCCC membership. NCCC provides third party liability insurance coverage for damages in case of a spectator’s bodily injury or property damage that is caused by a NCCC member participant. NCC
members do not buy personal insurance coverage with their
NCCC membership dues. Therefore, each NCC member and
their Corvettes are not 100% covered for everything that may
happen during a club event. Referring to the FAQ’s at the
“Insurance” tab on NCCC’s website is the best way to find out
what is and is not covered. If you have any questions, contact
me first for an answer. If I do not know the answer, I will contact NCCC’s Business Manager, Jack Wilson, on your behalf.

C5/C6/C7 Engine Cleaning

Whether prepping your Corvette to roll across the auction
block or display at a show, cleaning the engine adds value. A
spotless engine shows just how important and well maintained
is your Corvette. Filthy engines are more apt to retain heat and
make it difficult to detect small leaks. Dirt and dust cause pulleys and belts to squeak from undue wear. Worst of all, it just
looks bad.
Since the 1997 and newer engines use one ignition coil per
cylinder, they can be cleaned without worry of water damage.
Ignition distributors can be troublesome during engine cleaning,
even with early cars, and very troublesome with the 90-96 LT
series engines.

Region to attend their club’s car show “Corvettes on the Cumberland Children’s Charity Corvette Car Show” on April 16,
2016. It would be nice if some of our club members could
make plans to attend this show to show our support. Check out

Give the engine as much water as
required to remove cleaner and dirt.

This is very important: the engine must be at ambient temperature with no heat buildup. Don’t start the engine for any length
of time! Park the car overnight where the engine cleaning will
take place. If the engine is even slightly warm, electronic components can condense moisture internally when cold water hits
the surface.
All electrical components and connectors are weatherproof so
direct water will not cause corrosion or damage. There is no
need for a high pressure washer or steam cleaner in most cases.
Steam cleaning is not a good idea because it will cause condensation. Pressure washers can force water into places it shouldn’t
be, making it difficult to remove. Water should only be directed
at the engine block or cylinder heads.
Annual cleaning makes the procedure simple. A garden hose
has enough pressure to safely remove any dirt, dust, and debris.
While you are cleaning the engine and compartment, the radiator should be checked for debris. Radiator debris can be flushed
out with the garden hose.
Keep things cool to avoid plastic part damage. Washing in the
direct sunlight can discolor plastic covers if the cleaner dries on
the pieces. Keep a water hose handy to rinse the exterior if any
cleaning product gets on the paint.
If the underside of the hood is dirty, wash it first then rinse the
exterior well. Apply cleaner to the engine and entire compartment. Wait approximately ten minutes before rinsing. Keep all
areas wet with cleaner until rinsing is started.
We use Greased Lightning cleaner everywhere under the hood.
Greased Lightning lifts the dirt and dust to limit hand rubbing
or brushing. There aren’t any coated components that will discolor so citric acid cleaners will work without causing damage.
We remove the engine covers and clean under them. Once everything is rinsed, compressed air should be used to blow off the
water. Corrosion may begin if water is left under the engine
covers.
Once the engine bay is cleaned you’ll be proud to show it off at
any show or cruise night. It makes a good impression on a potential buyer to see an engine that has been maintained properly.
Use compressed air to blow water
from the engine and compartment.
Be sure to blow all the water out of
the alternator before starting. A
landscape blower will do a good job
if compressed air is not available but
it’s difficult to direct into close areas.
Once cleaning has been completed,
apply spray silicone lubricant on
plug wires. Spray silicone on a clean
cloth and then wipe the wires. Silicone helps repel water and does a
good job of cleaning plug wires.
Finish by applying high temperature grease at the hood latches.
Spray the hood hinges with lubricant. Super Lube multi-purpose synthetic spray lubricant sprays as a
liquid but leaves a film of lubricant
as it dries. LPS #1 is a similar product that works equally well.
Remove air filter intake duct and
cover throttle body opening with
duct tape, for a thorough cleaning of
the engine front. Check air filter element or service a high performance
washable element. Remove air
cleaner housing or cover opening to
prevent water intrusion.

Removing the radiator cover is simple and allows better access to radiator and A/C condenser. Cover is
affixed with two 10 millimeter hex
head bolts on each side. Once removed, cover lifts straight up. You
may be surprised by the debris built
up on the radiator and condenser.
Remove plastic engine covers before applying cleaner. Spray entire
engine with cleaner, including inner
fenders and radiator area. If the sun
is beating down on the engine it is
easier and safer to clean in sections.
Apply cleaner as many times as necessary; however, if the engine is wet,
the cleaner won’t be as effective.

verge of being overtaken by many lessor and smaller hunger
dog clubs. The Plateau Corvette Club and the Smoky Mountain
club even the long vanquished Atlanta Corvette Club was barking over our once majestic carcasses. They all wanted to put
those torrid days of our Corvette supremacy behind them. They
all wanted to write a new chapter that did not include the Nashville Corvette Club as a respected competition.
We have a host of very wellknown and competitive adversaries in this region. East Tennessee Corvette Club with the
likes of Dave and Linda Goebels (National Champion) as
well as Steve Cronberg
(National Champion) and Tom
Adams (Southeast rookie of
the year 2014) including a
membership much larger and seemingly more supporting of
their efforts was insurmountable. They did however feel the
heat of the revived efforts of the Nashville Corvette Club. I
overheard Linda Goebels say, “that Nashville Club is giving a
tremendous effort to put us away this season”. We were second
and knowing that we are more determined to rally our cohort to
strive with more effort, to ascend that last mount and retake our
position as Champions of the Southeast Region. This year we
out gunned our long time archrivals from Atlanta Corvette Club
led by past National Championship team members of Betty and
Don Parks and Jack Filippone. They have so much experience
and are always a challenge. We beat back a tribal effort from
the Plateau Club with exponents of Jack Kinney and Harold
and Luanne Penley and befuddled the competition of Vette City
Vettes CC amassed in the field. Others arose from event to
event only to be left in the cone filled arena as also rans. Let
not the mantle of defeat cover our comrades.

Competition season closed on
December 31st and marked an
awesome effort from many of
our club mates. The autocross
teams of Mike and Cindy Dill,
The Ryder Group( Sharon
Ross, Julie Ryder and Lynn ),
the lone wolf operation of
Road Poet Racing and the
Family Affair of Don Hoffmeister and his daughter Sarah
Burch. Most of the season, Don’s son-in-law was highly supportive to Don and me. The more your family or extended family can be a part of your life the better the enjoyment. He was a
great cheerleader, and encouraging us to drive harder and compete with fervor. The Nashville Corvette Club was endowed
with the great competitors of Alesia and Metts Hardy, Ron and
Deborah Jarrell, including Larry Odom and Dale Johnson.
These folks and many others helped propel the Nashville Corvette Club into Second Place in the Southeast Region standings.
Sometimes the effort was lonely with only a couple of team
mates making the effort to ascend the standing ladder. Often
the teams mentioned above were augmented with efforts from
Mike Venable, Martin Workman and lady drivers Jessica Porter
and Martha Wolkonski. We all wished to see more of our Clubs
members involved every where we contested. There was a
batch of workers to help us succeed. Al Bennett, Butch Geng,
Toney Hodges, team Patricia and Patrick Thompson, Joyce and
Gary Downing, Penn Obriant, Tom Bible, Chip Mezger, Dale
Mexic, and Henry Hurley. All of these members contributed
time and effort to our noble cause. Remember workers too,
contribute to our standings. Without these workers the drivers
could not compete.
Yes, we were second and that
is no simple accomplishment.
Your Club had fallen, from the
pinnacle of the Southeast Region that the members of
Nashville Corvette Club enjoyed for ten years, to a position where much smaller clubs
and less formidable contestants nearly overtook and
claimed all our glory. We wore that Champion’s Patch, with
pride, for all those years and looked at it, as if it were ours to
hold, always, and was unlosable. Then three years ago along

longer inured with the pride of accomplishment, the gusto to
succeed, or the comradery required. We were defeated and in
an awkward position. We were fallen warriors with only past
glorious battles to tell war stories about. We were humiliated
by lesser clubs, who reveled in our disarray. We were on the

Hello all you corvette fans. I hope you are staying warm and
enjoying the off season. The web site is under construction during the dull days of winter. We have made a few entries for
your Corvette Pleasure. The awards banquet was fun and the
Master membership results have been posted on the Nashville
Corvette Club Master Membership page. The Presidents messages change often and help keep us all informed of what is and
has been happening in our Corvette world. Many members
have sent photos of events that our club has organized and
those can be seen on the site also. Be sure to visit the web site
and check out the latest improvements. As the dull season progresses, we will continue to upgrade and enhance your web
surfing experience. See ya soon on the web or in your Corvette.
Importance of Charity
As we head into February, we have to take stock of the NCC
Charities for 2015 as we begin to formulate our plans for 2016.
With the knowledge of the important role of NCC in the charities in Nashville and Middle Tennessee, one can’t help but be
humbled by the needs of our community. Our focus is on the
local needs where we can witness the positive impact of our
efforts.
During 2015, the NCC donated over $4000 to six different
organizations all of which help feed the hungry, house the
homeless, shelter the battered, accommodations for families of
the terminally ill veterans as well as educate the willing and
spiritually support for the misdirected.
Our goals for NCC charity are to:



95% of the donations must support the local needs of the
community and not a corporate structure
The recipients accept the donation at a club meeting with a
brief explanation of their particular organization’s mission
These charitable efforts are supported through the annual
Touch of Gold Car Show, Club raffles, and Club events.
Thanks to all of our charitably minded members who understand our role in the community and the never ending needs of
our most vulnerable citizens. There will always be a need and
the NCC will always support those in need.
We are still looking for someone to step up and fill the Charity
Chair for 2016. I held that position in 2014, and it was one of
the most rewarding endeavors I’ve ever undertaken. I witnessed
first hand the needs of the community and the effort by which
our donations assisted. So please, volunteer to become our
2016 Charity Chair and become a member of the Board as we
navigate NCC through the New Year.

My first autocross (driving) was attended in September of this
year. It was a great experience and a tremendous adrenalin
rush. I had purchased an 89 coupe in May at the auction especially for these events. Following the advice of my coach and
mentor (Martin Workman), my first run at Pellessissippi Community College was VERY slow. He had said to make sure you
completed the course without any errors the first time and that
your time would decrease as you ran the rest of the day. He
was correct on the first part. I made three runs and my time did
come down very slightly. I was very nervous not wanting to
embarrass myself or do anything wrong. As I lined up for the
fourth run, smoke started coming out from under the hood. Out
of line, shut down, pop the hood, note the air conditioner compressor is froze up and the serpentine belt is melting. BAM!
End of weekend. I was devastated. But, I was hooked. I couldn’t wait for the next event. Long story short, we repaired the
car and went to Huntsville.
Mechanically everything was good. I was still slow, but was
having a great time. I have also met a lot of Corvette owners.
The autocross family is a great group of people that will do anything to help you out. I ran each event the rest of the year in the
Southeast Region. The hi-lite was Roebling Road. My Son-Inlaw Larry and I spent four exciting days with that event. What
a change driving a road course versus pylons in a parking lot. I
was so intimidated with the speed you run and I have one of the
slowest cars of all the competitors. But again, what a RUSH. I
only wish I had listened to club members a few years ago and
started competing then. I wasted a lot of good time. If you are
thinking about competing, start now. If you’re like me, you’ll
love it!

saying thanks for all of your support in my continuing raffle
ticket sales and other events you have supported. As I mentioned in the last meeting, the NCM has an exhibit going on
from 1/15 to 3/25 called the “American Muscle”. This includes
Hot Rods, Street Rods and Muscle cars from 1932 to 1972. For
more information on this please visit the NCM web site. Please
stay tuned for more information that will be sent out on upcoming events at Track X and the Museum to attend that will be
scheduled through the coming months and as the weather permits. Here is some news from the NCM that I hope you will

It has become a Nashville Corvette Club tradition to have a
Valentine Cruise. Butch and I are once again planning to cruise
the Tennessee back roads to one of our beautiful State Parks.
We will travel to Henry Horton State Park this year. Henry
Horton is located near Chapel Hill, Tennessee. It was constructed in the 1960’s on the estate of the former governor of Tennessee, Henry Horton.
Michelin NCM Bash Registration Open
Each April, event season at the Museum is kicked off with the
Michelin NCM Bash. This is the first time Corvette fans have
the opportunity to see the next model year up close and in person, while hearing from the engineers and designers behind the
car. Mark your calendars because this year's event is April 2830 and registration is now open!
Jim Mero will be leading a seminar on driving the Nurburgring, Kai Spande will share what's going on at the Corvette
Plant, Paul Koerner and Brittany George will offer a seminar
on Corvette technology and classroom training on C5s, C6s and
C7s, watch an LT4 engine get hand built, take touring laps at
the MSP, learn how to use the C7 navigation, enter your car in
the celebrity choice car show, learn Corvette basics at the Ladies' Garage Party, relax and shop in the Ladies' Oasis, take one
of our many road tours, or participate in a sip-n-paint. The
grand finale to the Bash is a banquet with Dueling Pianos!

double agent for the FBI against the GRU (Russian military
intelligence) and his Corvette was one of his personal cars used

American Muscle Exhibit Opens
January 15 through March 25 the National Corvette Museum is hosting in the Exhibit Hall fourteen examples of American
Muscle as part of a Hot Rod / Street Rod
exhibit. The exhibit features a little something for everyone, from 1932 to 1973,
and from Chevrolet to Ford and others in
between.
"When we added on the Exhibit Hall in
2009, the thought was that the space could
be used for a variety of exhibits," said
Bob Hellmann, Facilities and Displays Manager. "We try to
select exhibits that will appeal to a new audience, while offering a little something extra for our Corvette fans. This allows us
to give our visitors 45 minutes of Corvette and about 15
minutes of something different during their tour."

Nashville stills maintains the largest membership in the
Southeast with 65 members as of 12/31/14.
Cell Phones for Military
Ken Nesbitt at Freeland Chevrolet is sponsoring a special
program for our US Military, especially those deployed to
South West Asia. If you have an old cell phone around you can
donate it to a worthy cause. Turn it in at Freeland and it will be
used to generate funds to provide free phone service to deployed military members so they can keep in touch with family
