Bank of Cyprus Australia Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited EDITORIAL There is no doubt the standard of community football goes from strength to strength every year. “LEVEL” PLAYING FIELD With the age of professionalism now well embedded in the elite sector of our sport, the “spill-down” into community level is having a dramatic effect. The number of players continuing their careers in the NFL after high level engagement has never been higher and that certainly brings a great deal to the competition. From a coaching perspective, areas such as the application of sports science principles, video analysis of matches and intensive skill development have become standard practice. It’s been six years since I retired from football and I remember just a few years earlier our medical team attempting to implement recovery protocols, including ice baths. Their early attempts were in vain as the baths quickly become cooling tubs for post game beverages. However, as more players came into the side from AFL, VFL and TAC Cup backgrounds, the acceptance changed and the practice became entrenched. Most of the areas of improvement in football are intellectual properties - the results of research, theories and acquired knowledge. Most of these intellectual properties are there for all to share, disseminated in articles, seminars and development sessions or just through the visual nature of their application. From that perspective, all community clubs are equal. All clubs have the ability to seek and obtain the necessary personnel to apply such knowledge. Numerous seminars and accreditation courses are staged throughout the year in all sectors of the sport (coaching, medical, administration) to provide community clubs with as much an even playing field as possible. However, where there is not an even playing field is, well, essentially the playing field (and associated facilities). Whilst there is an acceptance that football grounds come in all shapes THE NORTHERNER and sizes, the sophistication of a facility can have a dramatic effect on a club’s operation. Is the ground and facilities conducive to team success? Are the social rooms suitable for club functions? Most of the councils within the NFL boundaries have recognised that many of their community sporting facilities are dated, tired and, in some cases, unsuitable. However, ground and facility upgrades take a lot of time to discuss, plan and finalise; not to mention costing an extraordinary amount of money. That leaves us in the unfortunate situation of the “haves” and “have nots” within our community and in some cases, facilities that are not commensurate with the standard of football the NFL now finds itself producing. The NFL is looking to dedicate resources to assist clubs with their facility planning and funding procurement. Along with that, AFL Victoria and the AFL have identified Metropolitan Melbourne as their next focus point with regards to infrastructure support (after investing in Regional Victoria for the past five years). With the boundaries of the league extending across many municipalities, there will always be differences in facility standards across our 55 clubs. However, whether the issue be the playing surface, social facilities, change and preparation facilities or spectator amenities, the NFL will be looking to ensure our clubs have the best opportunity to access the limited funding available through government sources. The standard of our competition and the impact and influence it has on the community demands that. — The Northern Football League Record Jeremy Bourke Chief Executive Officer Northern Football League Contents Round 9 Picks 2 Coaches Player of the Year 3 500 and Counting for Hamer 4 Wingman Off-Field Champion Award 7 The Highlighter 9 Northern Knights 10 Division 1 11 Division 2 22 Fixture Lift Out 31 Division 3 35 Reserves + U19s Results 46 Leading Goal Kickers 48 Ground Locations 52 Netball Results 55 NFL Photos 57 Whistle Whispers 59 Junior Results 61 Cover Image Front: Lalor’s Ayden Tessari goes for a run against North Heidelberg. NFL. ORG. AU VOTES 13 3 500 and Counting for Hamer Bundoora legend Andrew Hamer will etch his way into football immortality this weekend when he becomes the first player in NFL/ DVFL history to play 500 games. An eight-time premiership winner across all three grades at Bundoora, Hamer reaches the feat when he steps out for battle in this weekend’s reserves clash against Montmorency. Ahead of the grand occasion, former Bundoora secretary and sponsorship manager Phil Walker reflects on Hamer’s 29 years at Yulong Reserve. AS a young club secretary back in 1984 it was my task to hand out the guernsey numbers to senior players as part of our pre-season launch. The number 14 was handed to a fresh faced 17-year-old kid named Andrew ‘Pickles’ Hamer. A product of the Bundoora juniors he had shown some signs in the under-18s that he was likely to be a senior player. But nobody at the club could envisage how great a player he would turn out to be. At 17, he was tall enough for senior football at 179cm but at only 72kgs some at Bundoora were concerned how his slight frame would cope with the demands of Division 1 Diamond Valley football. In those days, strong and physical contact was not only acceptable, but encouraged by many clubs as a quality required to survive in the game at that level. You not only had to be able to give it out, but you had to be able to take it. Our fears were soon quashed as he not only coped in the top flight, but became a dominant player in our first 18 almost immediately. Possessed with blistering speed and a raking left foot kick, he bamboozled his more experienced opponents almost from the outset with his anticipation, limitless courage and hunger for the football. Those in the opposition who chose to exert undue physical tactics upon Andrew more often than not found him steaming away from them or moving laterally at the last moment to make them look foolish. Bundoora fans of the time marvelled at his long dashes down the wing, his limitless courage, and his ability to finish with a brilliant goal or to set up a team mate in a better position. Courted by VFA and VFL clubs early in his career, Pickles resisted their advances and remained a Bundoora player throughout. His accolades make for impressive reading as champion player and clubman from the outset as outlined in his profile below. Pickles got even better with age, culminating in deserved team success where he was an important member of the 1995 and 1996 senior premierships. This was a fitting reward for a club champion and the culmination of a great career. Most supporters and committee members expected he would retire soon after the premiership wins. After all he was 31 years old and had already played more than 200 senior games. But quietly spoken and humble Pickles had other ideas and decided to play on and coach the reserves. He didn’t just play in the reserves, he starred for them. He captain-coached the reserves to two premierships and topped the reserves league and club goal kicking tables on several occasions. At 48 years of age he plays on (and on and on and on) and his contribution to the Bundoora Football Club and his positive influence on the careers of so many players has seen him contribute immeasurably to the enduring success of the Bundoora Football Club over the past 30 years. His achievement can not only be measured in how many games he has played, rather by the respect he has gained from all whom he has played with and against. The number 14 jumper sits proudly in the Yulong Reserve club rooms and Pickles will remain a hero not just to the Bundoora Football Club but to the game itself. AU WINGMAN Off-Field Champion Award The Northern Football League in partnership with the AFL Coaches Association (AFLCA) and the Victorian Government last Friday launched the Wingman Off Field Champion Awards Program. The awards program is part of the Victorian Government’s Wingman campaign, which aims to tackle alcoholrelated violence among young adults. The Wingman campaign encourages young people to take responsibility for themselves and their mates when out having a good time, to avoid alcoholfuelled situations. The Wingman Off-Field Champions Awards Program recognises players aged 18 – 25 years who demonstrate behaviour off the field – whether it’s in the pub, among friends, or while kicking the footy – that sets an example for other young Victorians. CEO of the AFLCA Danny Frawley, along with former AFL player and media personality Michael Roberts were in attendance at the Northern Football League headquarters to launch the initiative alongside Lower Plenty captain Billy Barden and Montmorency youngster Jack Pitts. “The Government and the AFL coaches have really thrown their weight behind this because they’ve all come from community football and it’s basically a way of reintroducing the best clubman which will now be called the Wingman,” Mr Frawley said. “It’s all about responsible drinking and someone who might organise designated taxis or even organise responsible social events – things that might happen naturally but things that we want to recognise as the Wingman at each club.” Clubs will be asked to nominate a player providing details of their leadership with the winner to receive a cash prize and a plaque. The player’s club will also receive a sporting equipment voucher and a signed Sherrin football. The league winner will also be eligible to be named the Wingman of the Year with further cash prizes for the player and club to be awarded at an AFLCA Gala Dinner. In addition to the awards program, the AFLCA will support the antiviolence campaign by encouraging everyday Victorians to take the pledge to be a Wingman. By taking the pledge, people become eligible to enter a competition to win two tickets to the AFL Grand Final or have an AFL Coach attend a club training session at their local ground. To make the pledge and enter the competition, visit: www.facebook.com/champmoves NFL SQUADS FOR CLASH WITH EDFL The Northern Football League under-17 and under-16 squads have been selected ahead of their games with the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) on June 22 at Greenvale Reserve. Footy fans are being called on to recycle and keep our footy grounds clean from litter. Most of the waste generated at a footy game is recyclable, that’s why Whittlesea, Darebin and Nillumbik Councils have teamed up with the NFL to encourage fans to help “Clean Up Our Game – Recycle”. This project provides a great opportunity for footy fans to recycle at the footy games they attend and help make a positive change in the community by raising awareness about recycling and reducing litter! Recycle! Fans can now use the yellow lidded recycling bins at the football grounds to recycle their glass and plastic drink bottles, cans, cardboard food containers, cardboard coffee cups, newspapers and magazines! Remember some items such as plastic bags, soft plastic wrappers / wraps and food cannot be recycled -please put these items in the rubbish bin. For more information about what can and can’t be recycled please visit your local Council website. Litter around the ground is not only unsightly but costs the community money and can pose health and safety risks. Cleaning up litter costs Victorian taxpayers over $50 million dollars each year! Next time you are at the footy, make sure that you use the right bin, and recycle! By recycling one aluminium can you are saving enough energy to run your television for three hours – or for one whole footy game! Help keep your football ground in good condition, make a valuable contribution to your community and the environment by recycling at the footy and avoiding litter. Let’s all Clean Up Our Game Recycle! 8 THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record WWW. NFL. ORG. AU THE Highlighter – Round 9 LOWER PLENTY V WHITTLESEA It may not be a battle between two premiership contenders, but today’s match at Montmorency Park shapes as a mini final for both Lower Plenty and Whittlesea. After eight rounds the sides sit ninth and tenth respectively on the Division 1 ladder and this afternoon’s encounter could play a large role in deciding this year’s relegation battle. Both teams head into the clash with a 1-7 record after a difficult opening two months of the 2012 season. Lower Plenty, the newcomer to the top flight after a dominant season in Division 2 last year, has been competitive in all but one of its games in 2012, though has only a solitary win over Montmorency to show for its efforts. The one win was a famous one, with the Bears jumping their arch rival early on to race to a 21-point lead at quarter time. Despite kicking only four goals after the first break, they held on for an 11-point win, the result the biggest surprise in Division 1 so far this season. Billy Barden is having a superb season and has elevated his reputation even further after finishing third in the Division 2 best and fairest last year. The premiership captain has spent the majority of the season in the middle of the ground but has still booted 21 goals, the most of any Lower Plenty player and placing him equal seventh on the competition goal kicking table. Clint Monger is another leading from the front, the 29-year-old seemingly getting better with age. The three-time club champion has polled 10 votes in the Coaches Player of the Year award, equal with Barden as the most of any Bear. Great responsibility will now be placed on the young shoulders of Reece Geary, with the young tall now expected to play as the club’s first ruckman following Patrick Flynn’s season-ending injury against West Preston-Lakeside a fortnight ago. Flynn, the league’s most promising young ruckman, suffered a fractured eye socket against the Roosters and is expected to be out of action for 10 weeks, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the 2012 season. Whittlesea looked to be steadily improving when it claimed a comfortable 29-point win over West Preston-Lakeside in Round 5 but has since struggled badly over the past month. Since beating the Roosters, the Eagles have lost their past three matches by an average margin of 79 points, including a 148-point loss to Heidelberg in Round 8. With injuries affecting a host of its senior list, the club is relying heavily on its large crop of promising youngsters each week. After a dominant opening five weeks, Nick Snowdon has missed the Eagles’ past two matches while talented defender Chris Horman missed the Heidelberg loss a week after starring against Macleod. Further compounding the club’s misfortunes, skipper Garrett Heenan, Matthew Quinton and Jeremy Page were all injured against Heidelberg which limited the Eagles to just one interchange rotation. But for all the doom and gloom, there have been a number of positives for Whittlesea throughout the first half of the year. The win over West Preston-Lakeside and a two-point loss to Montmorency proved the club can match it with anyone when it plays its best football, while the form of Snowdon, Horman and Andrew Fairchild has gives the club plenty to build a good team around. If it can get its best team on the park there is no reason why Whittlesea can’t expect to win at least five of its final ten games and comfortably avoid relegation from the top flight. The sides today resume a competitive rivalry which stems back to their time in Division 2. They last met in the 2010 Division 2 Grand Final, where the Eagles were victorious by 14 points to earn promotion to Division 1 for the first time in their history. It will be another tough assignment for the Knights as they fight to resurrect their season and are again set to be without nine of their best players due to Vic Metro commitments. VIC METRO REPORT—VLASTUIN, BALLARD & HROVAT AMONG THE BEST After a disappointing first performance it was time for the Vic Metro boys to take to Visy Park against Tasmania with the local boys looking the dominant side on paper. As it turned out, the talent amongst the Metro boys showed on the scoreboard with Metro running out big winners kicking 21.11 137 to Tasmania's 6.5 41. Northern Knights boys Jacob Ballard (28 disposals, one goal), Nathan Hrovat (32 disposals) and Nick Vlastuin (28 disposals, 11 marks) all found plenty of the ball for Metro, and were helped by Sam Gilmore winning a majority of the ruck contests. Matthew Haynes provided Metro with great run all day on the wing and Aidan Corr played a good shut down role in defence before going forward to kick a goal later in the game. 10 THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record WWW. NFL. ORG. AU DIVISION 1 – Summary As the Division 1 season nears the halfway mark, it’s time to cast an eye over each teams’ performance over the opening eight rounds. Bundoora: The Bulls have been nearly flawless in their premiership defence as they look for consecutive flags for the first time since 1995-96. First on the ladder with seven wins and just one loss, the Bulls look just as strong as last season despite a few notable departures. Gary Moorcroft and Cameron Cloke continue to churn out goals and have 71 majors between them to sit first and second on the goal kicking table respectively. Heidelberg: Sit second on the ladder yet have somehow managed to fly under the radar. Youngster Justin Powick has been a revelation, while Allan Young has impressed with 21 goals since joining from Watsonia. The Tigers’ ageing midfield continues to prosper, particularly Danny Nolan who must be in strong contention for this season’s Frank Rosbrook Medal. Montmorency: Has managed to win three games by a goal or less and as a result sits in third place with a 6-2 record. Incredibly, was involved in three consecutive two-point games before claiming a six-point win over Northcote Park in Round 8. Luke and Ryan Jackson have been dominant in the midfield, while Dean Limbach has worked his way into form after a quiet opening month. A 75-point win over Heidelberg proved the side has what it takes to go all the way. Eltham: The surprise packet with five wins and a draw from its opening eight games. Chris Varsamakis and Jackson Weatherald have had an immediate impact since returning, while Lachie Richardson and Brendan O’Sullivan have been in scintillating form. Skipper Paul Currie is having a season to remember and has booted 30 goals to sit third on the goal kicking table. West Preston-Lakeside: An indifferent start to the season as outlined by its 4-4 record. Yet to win or lose consecutive games, the Roosters are expected to be the big improvers after the break. Kris Bardon has been influential and would be locked in a battle for the Roosters’ best and fairest award along with brother Ashley and Shaun Gannon. Yet to beat any side inside the top five but could do so against Eltham today. Northcote Park: Could have been inside the top four but for two close losses against Greensborough and Montmorency and a draw with Eltham. Has been excellently served by Will Debruin and young defender Ben McNiece. Possesses one of the best midfields in the competition but has lacked a big marking forward. The Cougars are the only side to beat Bundoora thus far and are still a genuine finals contender. Greensborough: Sat third on the ladder after three rounds but have not won a game since to now sit seventh on the table. Injuries to Tim Bongetti and Conlan Gunn have hurt, as has Nick Riddle’s elevation to Collingwood’s VFL team. Threw away the four points against Macleod in Round 8 after leading by 25 points and now faces an uphill battle to play finals football. Macleod: Has managed to resurrect its season with three consecutive wins after a winless opening five weeks. Fast becoming the last quarter specialist having kicked 16 goals to two in its past three final quarters against Lower Plenty, Whittlesea and Greensborough. A crunch game against Northcote Park awaits today. Lower Plenty: Just one win from its opening eight games but has shown enough to suggest it has the ability to stay afloat in Division 1. A shock eightpoint win over neighbour and fierce rival Montmorency in Round 7 has been the highlight so far. Skipper Billy Barden and experienced campaigner Clint Monger have shown they are genuine stars of the competition. Whittlesea: The Eagles’ season has gone into freefall on the back of three consecutive disappointing losses. Looked to be an improved outfit when it beat West Preston and ran Montmorency within two points, but has since fallen to heavy losses to Eltham, Macleod and Heidelberg. Nick Snowdon has been the standout, and Chris Horman has impressed in the top flight. SENIORS The sun was out, Yulong looked a treat and the large crowd was entertained with a high scoring game. The Panthers jumped us early before we rallied and slammed on 20 goals after quarter time. They are a seriously talented team and will cause many headaches over the next few months. Cam was the standout with 11 and other good players on the day were Fazz, Brendo and Joey. RESERVES Came up against a very determined team that is sure to figure in the finals. A 5-3 record is a pass for this group at the long weekend break and the foundation has certainly been laid for the next 10 weeks. Best players were Browny, Lukey Little, Nath Gardiner and Follachio. Was good to see big Matty Ferraro back running around flexing his Power Core built rig. THIRDS The young Bulls were soundly beaten by a pretty slick outfit. Youngy, big Anthony and Coco were again super in an otherwise testing day for the boys. There are certainly signs there though and some wins are sure to be just around the corner if the group MONTMORENCY In what was always going to be a tough game to test our resolve as a playing group, the boys battled gallantly for four quarters against an opposition that was high on confidence after beating Bundoora. SENIORS Northcote Park kicked the first goal within 30 seconds of the opening bounce. Dean Limbach then got a hold of it early in the first, kicking three, and looked like he was in for big day, so the signs were there! From then on, the game see-sawed somewhat in ebbs and flows, with neither team able to gain a strong ascendancy on the contest and that’s how it was to be for the majority of the game. Ben Haynes and Junior Jackson were in everything in the first half, setting us up through the midfield, with Senior Jackson playing his role in containing Northcote Park’s perennial playmaker, Paul Scanlon, at the clearances. Craig Flint produced one of the greatest acts on the footy field running back 20m with the flight of the ball, to take the most courageous mark you will see and earning himself the coveted “Ruthless Act of the Week” award amongst the playing 12 THE NORTHERNER can stick fat and work hard. PICKLES’ 500TH GAME In Bulls Bits we would normally take the time to offer up some literacy genius and pen some humorous stories about the many personalities we have at the Bull Pen. However, this week it’s all seriousness as we pay homage to an amazing individual. Andrew ‘Pickles’ Hamer today runs out in the Bundoora colours for the 500th time, an accomplishment that would not have been achieved too many times. He has been an incredibly loyal Bundoora person ever since walking into the club nearly 30 years ago. Accolades and achievements such as B&F’s, premierships (at all three levels), league representative games, captaincy and coaching are all part of Pickles’ CV and he isn’t done with yet. You can still find his name in the current reserves goal kicking table at the back of this record today. A man universally respected and well-liked by all and a proud husband and father to boot, he truly is one of the game’s greats and an absolute gentleman whose modesty and humility has endeared him to Bulls fans spanning four decades. The number 14 jumper proudly sits high above in the clubrooms and will remain there long after the current playing group and their children depart this Earth and that’s the way it should always remain. Therefore, on behalf of the entire Bundoora Football Club, its players, coaches, committee, members, supporters and the NFL we congratulate Andrew Hamer on his achievement and thank him for the many memories he has provided over many years. Good luck today, Picks, and may there be a few more games still left in the tank. PRESENTATION NIGHT www.bundoorabulls.com.au is where you will find all the information. Hayley Harrison is your contact so please get in touch with her and provide your RSVP and arrange your table of girls as it’s a night never to be missed. NEXT MATCH We welcome the boys from Para Road in what could be the game of the year. Two powerhouse clubs in good form and with high expectations for season 2012, it’s sure to be a classic. group. The second half was much the same, just a fierce contest on the tight confines of Monty Park, but in the end we were able to hold onto a great six-point victory against quality opposition who will figure prominently at the business end of the year. RESERVES A difficult struggle all day saw the boys lose their second straight home game. Our ball movement needs to be cleaner and more direct as too many times we over possessed the footy. In the end Northcote Park showed they wanted the win more which was disappointing. A big game next, against Bundoora, gives a chance to redeem ourselves. UNDER-19s A great effort considering we were missing nine of our best players. We worked hard for each other under very difficult circumstances. It gave an opportunity to our younger players who really stood up. NETBALL Monty A took on Whittlesea which was bound to be a very physical game. The first five minutes proved that Whittlesea was out to make a mends for the loss they encountered last time we met. Whittlesea won the first quarter by six goals to a slow starting Monty side. From there the girls regrouped and worked hard at countering Whittlesea’s game plan but went down by five goals - 31-26. Monty B took on Thomastown and flew out of the blocks early. Monty had a lot of ground to make up after their last match with Thomastown losing by 12 goals. There was no messing about this time with a convincing 31-18 win. Monty C also played Thomastown - a game which had not been played to date. Thomastown are a strong side in Section 4 so the girls had their work cut out for them. Monty worked hard but Thomastown had them covered and unfortunately took the win 33-19. NFL. ORG. AU 13 DIVISION 1 LOWER PLENTY Well another week and another big challenge away from home against a Division 1 powerhouse. Let’s do the rounds CUBS Let another close one slip unfortunately. Again played some really good footy and unlucky not to get the choccies. Led for the most part but got pipped at the post and went down by just two points. Patto returned and was plucking everything, kicking four of our 12 goals. The Doumtsis boys dominated again while Laurie and the Duck also impressed. So close to being a top side so keep at it and the results will start to go our way. MAGOOS It’s a bit early to start the two’s cruise chant but the curtain raisers are going along nicely and when they turn it on are going to be hard to beat. Went into this one with a strong squad and got out of the blocks early thanks to a quick clearance and some Greek magic! Led all day and held off a late charge by the Roosters to record and quality four-goal win against a quality opponent. A few old stagers were amongst the goals, led by “sore back Sox” WHITTLESEA After two solid losses to Eltham and Macleod, the boys were keen to reproduce the sort of form that led to a win over West Preston-Lakeside and an unlucky narrow loss to Montmorency. SENIORS From the outset though, it was apparent that the Tigers had come to play. They smashed us in the ruck and their midfield dominance gave their forwards numerous opportunities. The Heidelberg forwards were really on song. They were quick on the lead, marked strongly and kicked accurately. The gulf between the teams was especially obvious at stoppages when the Tigers linked up beautifully and ran forward in numbers to keep our backs continually under the pump. A game ending injury to star Matthew Quinton was a real body blow to the team. Jeremy Page who has been a powerhouse all year in the ruck needed to be rested during the game because of illness and captain Garrett Heenan did his hamstring. The Tigers switched into top gear during the second and third quarters and the Whittlesea boys were left in their wake with the final score 9.5 (59) to 32.15 (207). Overall the Heidelberg team gave Whittlesea 14 THE NORTHERNER with four. Bozo returned and provided some value, as did Micka who took off exactly where he left us. Squida played a blinder, while that back line did it again. Well placed going into the break so rest up and let’s charge towards some finals action in the second half of the year. ONES Once again, competitive till the end but outclassed by the Roosters for most of the day. It seems we have no problem getting the footy, just the usage lets us down. Still lacking some height which hasn’t been helped by what seems to be a season ending injury to Patty Flynn. Our thoughts are with ya Patty! Not much to say about this one with the same names appearing in the best once again. Went down by seven goals and well in need of the break. To say today’s match against Whittlesea is a must win is an understatement! Gonna be some big opportunities in the second half of the year to make our mark on Division 1 so stick with us as we prove to all it’s where we belong. A special mention to our very own Cole Trickle who not only managed to run into another car at training on a Thursday night but managed to back it up at West Preston two days later with another accident at the nearby roundabout. Coach Peter Bugden gave the team a thorough dressing down after the game. We had 22 players out on the ground and we suffered a 148-point loss. Injuries are not an excuse. We cannot accept this sort of performance. There will be a break next week followed by a must win game against Lower Plenty. Goal kickers: L. Hobbs 3, A. Fairchild 3, J. Daniel 2, M. Robertson Best players: J. Daniel, M. Robertson, B. Barker, A. Fairchild, L. Hobbs, M. Dyson RESERVES The reserves suffered heartbreak at Heidelberg. We led early and were playing with confidence to head into quarter time with a 16-point lead. The second and third quarters were close and we were still 11 points up at three-quarter time and in with a real chance. The final quarter was a thriller with Heidelberg kicking the first three goals to take the lead. Our boys fought back with two goals of their own to go to a four-point lead with only two minutes to go. A free kick and two 50m penalties later and Heidelberg scored the winning goal. A tragic end and heartbreak for the reserves who came so close to their first win. The final score read 8.8 (56) to 8.10 (58). Goal kickers: D. Barry 3, H. Cardwell 2, B. Marks, B. Briffa, J. NFL. ORG. AU 15 DIVISION 1 HEIDELBERG Welcome back everyone after the mid-year break, I’m sure we all enjoyed a well earned rest. We now get ready for the run home to the finals to see how, what looks to be the most even year in a long time, will unfold. Last game we hosted the Eagles and for the first time in a long time we enjoyed three wins which was a great way to go into the break. SENIORS In near perfect conditions we got off to a good start and were on target kicking 9.3 in the first quarter. We started a bit slowly in the second, missing a few early opportunities before things clicked and we finished the quarter adding 9.5 to go to the long break with a handy lead over a very young Eagles outfit. The highlight of the third was holding them to just one point then the aim in the last was to continue that good work but to their credit they never chucked in the towel and added five last-quarter goals. We on the other hand had our biggest win for the year and should look at the second half of the year with plenty of confidence. Great team effort with the better players - Big Mick, Bruiser, Stinga, Rhys, Danny and Youngy. GREENSBOROUGH I am only now recovering from the game. SENIORS We played well for 95% of the match but Macleod amazingly kicked three goals in the last minute to win. I have watched the video a number of times but I am still no clearer as to what happened in the final seconds but it is onwards and upwards from here. Goal kickers: J. Grubb 4, N. Carnell 3, J. Riddle 2, J. Griffiths 2, C. Jordan, D. Fowler, A. Rintoul, C. Gunn. Best players: N. Carnell, C. Gunn, L. Stanton, J. Grubb, J. McLellan, D. Wilson RESERVES Dare I use the term? It is a juggernaut and the boys are playing fantastic football. Goal kickers: M. Anderson 3, C. Walker 2, D. Cunningham 2, M. Fowler 2, M. Johnston, B. Millsom, J. Neilson, J. Pritchard, B. Freeman, T. Forster, C. Cogan, S. McCallum, M. Crawford. 16 THE NORTHERNER RESERVES Well if you didn’t hear the quarter time speech by Whitters you mustn’t have been in the metropolitan area at the time. It was straight out of the Teddy Whitten “you’ve got to inspire me “ chapter – not a bad idea for wet rainy days if you don’t want to get wet walking to the huddle you can stand on the deck and hear it loud and clear. After not kicking a goal in the first quarter we now knew that everybody was awake and we kicked the only goal of the second quarter. It was a riveting contest between these two great sides. After the long break the flood gates opened with both sides adding three goals apiece and we went to the last break two goals down. The last quarter was a tight see-sawing affair with the crowd on the edge of their seat. We took the lead late in the quarter only to surrender it with a 50m penalty with only minutes to go. Then with rotten bad luck they did the same dumb thing and we goaled and won by two points. Better players - A. Glover, Ash, P.Rowe, A.Penetta, S.Byrne and Harro UNDER-19s Got the jump on the Whittlesea boys with a five-goal to three first quarter in a pretty spirited opening. We increased the lead in the second and went to the long break with a 27-point advantage. We were really challenged in the third with the lead being cut back by a goal but the boys could sense their first wellearned victory. The last quarter started with the Eagles kicking the first two goals and really coming at our blokes, but for the first time this season we put in a full four quarter performance, listened to instructions and ran out with a fantastic first up win. Congratulations to all involved, let’s hope the second half of the year produces plenty more of that. Great team effort with the better players – Jimmy, Ben Kennan, C.Gogerly, Josh Lloyd, Adam Renwick and Zac. $10,000 DRAW Sunday July 8 at the club. All players have tickets to sell or see John Sheahan if you need more. This is an important function for the club so we need everyone to do their best to get behind it. LADIES DAY Saturday, August 11. Further details to follow. TODAY We welcome the Borough to Warringal Park for the three games. We all should be rested up and right to go so let’s carry on the good form from our last game and make it another three good wins. Best payers: E. Duggan, M. Anderson, M. Evans, C. Cogan, M. Fowler, M. Crawford UNDER-19s Coach Turner is happy with the way the boys are playing. The competition is very strong and the boys are adapting each week. Goal kickers: J. Callaway 4, L. McCann 3, A. Lindstrom 2, L. Money, L. Shaw, O. Tsorbaris, D. Forster, J. Lambert. Best players: J. Callaway, J. Johnston, L. McCann, S. Parks, S. Schmidt, A. Grimes THIS WEEK We take on the Bergers. Our recent record against the all-conquering Tigers reads well and we will be out to take the four points. Greensborough by 500 points. FASHION TALK I can’t stand what has been happening amongst the players and the way they are dressing. Finally we have Stumpy, Jim and Rob Lincoln no longer wearing jeans and runners and now the senior players have got a new look that personally I will not stand for. I am not one to over sensationalise but it is an abomination of biblical proportions. Players are inexplicably wearing collared Boro polo shirts over Hoodies. Have you ever heard of something so ridiculous? Here we have players waking up on game day putting on a hooded windcheater followed by a short sleeve collared shirt. How could anyone think this looks good? I am not going to shy away from naming the culprits and here is a list so far. DJ, Lachie, Harbo (of course), Gazza and Spongie. I will continue to name and shame these fashion assassins. VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK Mark Emery approached me with a new concept to name those volunteers who devote so much time to the club and give them some appreciation for their effort. He then nominated himself as a worthy recipient but this week goes to Dave MacGregor. Dave runs water during the seconds and then keeps the statistics for the seniors. UNDER-19s Prior to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the under-19 Division 2 side was no match for a very strong Diamond Creek side but still battled away well. They have a chance to win another game this morning against Warringal Hawks at Heidelberg West. The Division 1 side got back to some good form and returned to the winners list against Bundoora. The feature of the game was a 12-goal last quarter by the boys. RESERVES The reserves also back on the winning list with one of their best wins so far this year against Bundoora. The boys extended their lead at every change before claiming a 39-point win at Yulong Reserve. SENIORS We went into the seniors game looking for outright top spot on the NFL ladder over the long weekend, but unfortunately we fell short on the day. Bundoora proved far more accurate in front of goals and although we had more scoring shorts, our inaccuracy along WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE In a grinding game we got the points against Lower and now sneak back inside the top five, just. The better players were spread but you needed Adam Mackenzie in the Best Player Tickets. The twos got rolled and the under-19s not only claimed their second victory for the year, but they made it backto-back wins with a character-building win coming from behind against Lower. Next up it’s off to Eltham where wins have been few in recent years so we’re due. With Pebbles back in the team we will be looking at putting two wins together for the first time this year. The following week we turn the corner with a huge clash against top of the table Bulls. AROUND THE TRAPS Plenty on offer this week with the tide turning on Thursday night with Junior off the soup he was out in his car beeping his horn waiting to drive the members home and as he stayed on the wagon he still looked worse for wear at the end of Saturday night. Is Feeney the club’s greatest 18 THE NORTHERNER with some poor turnovers and injuries throughout the game were costly in the end. We are already looking forward to the return clash later in the year. NFL. ORG. AU 19 DIVISION 1 NORTHCOTE PARK I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable long weekend and we look forward to nearing the halfway point of the season and attacking it head on! SENIORS We enjoyed a beautiful winter’s day two Saturdays ago with the sun out and the chance for a few of the boys to work on their tan outside of the solarium (Lids, Wags). The seniors were unable to complete a golden Cougar day at Montmorency, although some of the boys did persist with this well into the evening. The first half saw the Northcote bench reduced to two as Micky O left the ground with a suspected broken foot, and Narby Kelly with a severe corkie, however Will Debruin provided the spark along with Bronik Davies and the lads were able to remain within 11 points heading into the half-time break. In the final ten minute the boys persevered and managed to come within a goal, and almost gained the lead with a kung-fu attempt at goal courtesy of Brock McLennan, but alas the points went to Montmorency. Final score NPFC 13.10 (88) to Montmorency 14.10 (94). RESERVES The reserves headed into this game with the motivation of some much needed MACLEOD We are still shaking our heads in disbelief after that effort against Boro. LAST GAME For the best part of three quarters we were outplayed and halfway through the final term we were some six goals down. What happened? Maybe the opposition relaxed but our blokes dug deep and goal by goal we clawed our way back, finally hitting the front with the last kick of the day thanks to a Vesper snap. As someone said, you can’t train for that but in 15 minutes we learned more about ourselves than you could teach in 100 training sessions. That we did it without our two best players (Kane and Cathal), we lost Jack B before the game and we are still missing two or three others was even more meritorious. We won back the Derek Shaw Cup so a big thanks to Dekka and the Shaw family for being there for the presentation to the Macleod only faithful. The twos and under-19s didn’t fare as well but hopefully the week off will turn things around today. MICK MALTHOUSE LUNCH Premiership coach Mick Malthouse will be guest speaker for the annual Cloudraisers 20 THE NORTHERNER premiership points, and with some dubious outs such as P. Haddad (suspected late night back injury) they looked to be tested throughout. Pre-game, John Bakopolous was quoted saying “if I kick more than six I’m definitely getting some action tonight”. It was a tight game throughout with Montmorency taking the lead heading into the last quarter, though the motivation had already been set out and the big fella was determined, with Johnny lining up for his seventh in the dying minutes, nothing was going to stop him. Also best on ground performances from Alex Ricco and Steven Hiho, though it was undetermined how they would fair later on in the evening. The final score NPFC 15.10 (100) to Montmorency 13.9 (87) and was our first away win over Montmorency’s twos in over ten years. Great effort boys! UNDER-19s The under-19s juggernaut is one that continues to roll on with another 100-point victory this weekend. The boys seemed to be getting into back to school party mode heading into the final quarter as Montmorency tripled its score. Harley Short, Oliver Dexter and Ricky Mercuri were instrumental in the win. It also must be mentioned that one of our under-19s is preparing for his UFC debut after the weekend. The final score 19.17 (131) to Montmorency 4.6 (30) BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY Congratulations to the under-19s, Benny and Joel for the success of the Back to School Party. NFL. ORG. AU 21 DIVISION 2 FITZROY STARS Last week we played our first home game at Victoria Park against South Morang who needed to win to stay in touch with the top four. SENIORS South Morang came out of the blocks quickly, kicking the first two goals within the opening five minutes. Our boys settled to kick the next four goals and take a ninepoint lead into the first break. Our focus was to run South Morang off their feet in the second quarter with our small men and get the ball to Paddy up forward who was dominating. We kicked 5.2 to South Morang’s 3.2 to take a 21-point lead to the main break. When the teams came out after the long break it was a very different game with our boys kicking 5.1 to our opponents’ 1.1 to take control of the game with our new full back of the century Jake holding Pow to three goals for the game and with our backline in complete control we took a 42-lead into the last quarter. The last quarter went our way too and we kicked 5.1 to 3.1 to win by 56 points. It was good to see Big Paddy back in form kicking NORTH HEIDELBERG After losing an old Doggie last week we have added our newest addition to the Kennel with the healthy arrival of Brodi King! Congratulations to Kellie, Jarrod, and Charli, we look forward to the day the little man pulls on the red, white and blue! SECONDS Continued their great form with a resounding win against Lalor. Debutant Alex Miller had a great game kicking five goals; Jamie continues his strong form with a BOG performance and Butch Elms bagged three. With the seniors winning it’s going to be hard to break into the side but there are a handful of blokes waiting for their chance. Unfortunately another long term injury with Shagger hurting himself but hopefully he will return for finals action. SENIORS It was always going to be a tough contest with Lalor at full strength for the first time this year and playing to keep its finals chances alive. As usual we were two goals down within 90 seconds which seems to be the norm. It seemed the first half was a repeat of the Tigers vs Saints thriller the night before with a shootout between Pete Shepherd at one end and our boys at the other. At half time Shep 22 THE NORTHERNER eight goals and was helped out by our small forwards who looked dangerous all day as well as our captain who didn’t get caught once this week. RESERVES Our boys started well kicking 5.2 to 2.5 in the first, controlling the midfield and giving our forward’s first opportunity with Ecka looking very dangerous every time the ball came in. The second quarter was much of the same with our backline on top and our midfield getting their hands on the ball as we took a 27-point lead into the main break. In the third Ecka made their backs look foolish with his ability to baulk and turn then kick goals out of nowhere. To their credit South Morang outscored us in the last quarter to reduce the final margin to 31 points in our favour. Our better player for the day were Ecka who kicked eight, Jordy, Anzack, Broady, Dion, Jonboy and Coops. Well done boys. Both teams are now 6-2. NETBALL The A-grade girls continued on there winning way with a comfortable 10-goal win over South Morang B. The girls have won four in a row so keep up the good work girls. B-grade girls had a good win on Friday night beating Mernda 29-25. Way to go girls! Keep up the good work and when you play as a team it will take you a long way. THURSDAY DINNER Remember everyone, the girls are still doing the Thursday night dinner so let’s all make sure we support the girls and bring your $5.00 for dinner every Thursday night. SOCIAL Was a good social night last week with everyone enjoying the four wins from all our teams however the Stars are organising a few dance lessons at the club for a few of you boys. If you didn’t know any different you would have thought you walked into the Blue Oyster Bar on Saturday night. TOOL OF THE WEEK A new contender this week, and it is Lukey’s shirt. We really need you to improve in three key areas. Firstly get down to the launderette and wash yourself a few times to improve your colour, way too bright! Secondly grow a bit so that you can handle the extensive girth of your master and finally practice your dance moves because they just have to get better. Improve in these areas and you’ll be fine!! had six and Lalor led by five points after we pegged back a four goal deficit before conceding two late goals. After half time Leigh Bentley and Brammo did a great job negating Lalor’s big forward while Gazi played his best game of the year off half back and Deano continued his solid form in the ruck. It was great to see young Liam and Matty M combining well and a fella that was playing A Grade footy before they were born still getting plenty of it in PK, he is a marvel. At the last change we were a few points in front and the boys managed to grind out a 15-point win. Harvs ended up with six, Gilbs got three and big Will continues to improve, kicking a very important goal midway through the last. Today is a massive one for both teams against Fitzroy Stars at Victoria Park and a chance for the seniors to avenge our Round 2 loss at home. After the game we will be heading back to the Kennel for Karaoke which is always a great night! NETBALL Section 1 Went down to Macleod who proved too strong and consistent, winning comfortably in the end. An injury to our GK didn’t help and our injured captain/coach Michelle Rix had to watch from the sidelines. After playing the top three sides in a row hopefully we can gain some momentum after the weekend’s break as we play the bottom four sides over the next month. Section 2 NHB are at the top of the table and there is no stopping them. They are definitely the in-form side and are strong all over the court and continue to be consistent week to week. This week they thrashed Epping A 49-15. — The Northern Football League Record GO STARS Section 3 After losing by a goal last week, the girls were not going to let the same feat happen twice. Instead they dug deep and came out victorious by a goal in a thriller against Greensborough B. Great fighting spirit was shown and excellent team work. NFL. ORG. AU 23 DIVISION 2 SOUTH MORANG The break has come at a good time for the South Morang Football Club after a very promising start to the season. With all sides failing to register a win over the past fortnight it might have been a good time for the lads to escape for the long weekend then look forward to taking on Hurstbridge today. SENIORS It’s not all doom and gloom for the senior club blooding three players who were part of our massive junior club last year. All three of Moz, Brent H and Leash have been listed in the best at some stage or another. Our recruits have been fantastic for the club, not only fitting in but leading the way on the track and showing our young list the ways of senior football. In sixth place on the ladder with two wins in eight games, the boys have a chance to break a five-game losing streak at home to the Bridges. HURSTBRIDGE Jason Akermanis, proudly sponsored by Boags, has been and gone but the memory of a truly great day lingers on. The triple Premiership player, Brownlow Medallist and media personality, pulled on his boots and played for Hurstbridge in Round 8, as promised, and what a day it was. We didn’t win the game but we were competitive for much of the day – apart from a serious lapse in the second quarter which allowed Diamond Creek to create a scoreboard buffer that we couldn’t pull back. Nonetheless, a ten goal turn around on Round 1 and our boys are getting better each week. Off field however, we were kicking goals everywhere with records being broken on the gate, in the canteen and across the bars. Ben Frilay Oval looked picture perfect in the unseasonably warm sunshine and played host to a well behaved crowd the size of which has never been seen before at Hurstbridge. From the Boag’s pavilion at the creek end to the clubrooms, the crowd was packed from boundary fence to perimeter fence. The club wishes to express thanks to all those who attended as the crowd behaviour was exemplary and we certainly hope everyone had a fantastic day. From the moment he arrived at the ground until the moment he left, Jason was the 24 THE NORTHERNER RESERVES Gazza probably has the hardest job in the club working out his list with so many missing out on a game week in, week out. It’s a credit to a lot of the guys who miss out on a game but give a hand in some form on match days. Macca has implemented some great game plans which when the boys play to instruction we are a tough side play against as has shown in most of our matches. UNDER-19S Sedgy’s lads should play finals but need to improve on their last month’s form after taking some big scalps early on. The boys currently sit in third place on the ladder, having won five games and claiming a draw from their first eight games. Last up the boys fell to St Mary’s by 57-points and they will be looking to get back on the winners’ list today and cement a spot in the top reaches of the ladder. THE CLUB All in all, barring a few bad quarters, I think all involved in the club would be happy with how we have started our venture back into Division 2. We have been very competitive in most games. We always knew it was going to be a massive step up for the club but so far we haven’t been disgraced and we are thoroughly looking forward to the second half of the season. Hopefully we get a few lucky bounces and claim a top four team in the run home which would be a just reward for all the players and everyone involved in the club. consummate professional, making himself totally available to our football department before, during and after the game while at the same time somehow managing to still accommodate all of the fans and children who wanted their moment with “Aker”. Fair effort Jason, and one we truly appreciate. Our thanks also to Ray Shaw and Terry Daniher, the Boag’s girls, Barry the Bull, the junior committee and the non-committee people who were pressed into service and who all worked so hard for us to make the day a success. Your efforts were much appreciated as were those of Ian Mason from Mason White McDougall who worked tirelessly auctioning off our memorabilia items, even if he was at the wrong function! Don’t worry Ian, your secret’s safe with us. TWOS Inspiring win by the boys in a knife edge finish with a big crowd on hand. Hard fought and well won, keep it up boys and more sure to follow from that performance. UNDER-19s Dylan Griffiths tribute game was played against Warringal Hawks and after running through a fantastic tribute banner for Dylan the boys started with a lot of intensity as you would expect on such a momentous occasion. Hurstbridge ran out comfortable winners and a highlight of the game was the ball being passed to Dylan’s brother Beau with pin point accuracy, enabling him to bang one through post high on the run from half forward in memory of his brother. NETBALL The girls suffered another loss on Friday night going down 21 goals to 12 against Heidelberg Hawkettes. Keep trying girls, more wins sure to be around the corner. NFL. ORG. AU 25 DIVISION 2 DIAMOND CREEK A fortnight ago we headed to Ben Frilay Oval for a clash with Diamond Creek. SENIORS We were greeted by arch rivals with a massive crowd and Aker. It was always going to be a big day and the boys responded well, controlling the first quarter before dominating the second with six unanswered goals. We extending to 79 points by the end of the third quarter, only to again let ourselves down in the last by allowing Hurstbridge to get on top and kick seven goals and close the final margin to 63 points. We need to concentrate for the whole four quarters if we are going to match it with the big boys. Let’s start with a four quarter performance today when we take on Thomastown. RESERVES After a slow start we had to work hard to keep in touch in a fairly even first half. In the third quarter we were able to break away and lead by 20 points. THOMASTOWN Definitely a tale of two halves against Epping last week. - BLUEBOY SENIORS We played fantastic footy in the first half to go into the main break the best part of four goals in front. The second quarter was inspiring as the boys booted five goals and managed to keep Epping goalless. Yet, the type of footy that gave us this lead fell by the wayside in the second half and the ladder leader ran right over the top of us to claim a 40-point win. Whilst we can be reasonably proud of our efforts, there should be a tinge of disappointment also, knowing that our best can match it with most teams but consistency lets us down. RESERVES Last week’s effort against Epping is better left behind us. We were outplayed in most areas of the ground and the final score was embarrassing. However, good sides rebound from losses like this and we will get our chance to do that when we travel to Diamond Creek today for a clash with the fifth-placed Demons. 26 THE NORTHERNER After the last break Hurstbridge lifted and finished the better side, kicking five goals to our one in the last quarter to beat us by two points. Ben Westcott kicked four while Chris McCauley was our best on the day. UNDER-19s The boys travelled out to Eltham last week and played a solid four quarters to run out comfortable winners by some 10 goals. We are nearing full strength and with our numbers growing so is the confidence of this group. The boys are playing for each other as a team and are fully aware of the need to ensure that trend continues for the remainder of the year. If we continue to play for each other the results will take care of itself with the right desire and attitude. The best players in the win over Eltham were Cam, Watto and Bryce while Perko booted five goals. All teams will be out to knock us off now, so let’s keep focused each week and keep racking them up. Good luck today and let’s have another two wins. Thanks to everyone who supports our fabulous sponsors! We’ve heard it all before but without the sponsors it would be hard for the E.F.C to thrive. Look for the signs around the club and ground as sponsor details are all there, and let’s show them the same support as they show the club. Muchas Gracias! SENIORS Plenty of positives from last week. Although we gave the opposition a fivegoal start we still won by seven, making it a 12-goal turn around. The challenge was thrown at us but once we turned it on after the main break there was no stopping us. Others would say these are negatives, we didn’t show up until half time and giving a team a head start isn’t a good thing. But as Super said, he wasn’t worried and knew it would be turned around once we stuck to the game plan. So let’s stick to the plan for four quarters this week fellas, have a LALOR The best game of the season with North prevailing by 15 points in the last couple of minutes. Bombastic Blood SENIORS We had our chances throughout the day but North’s finishing was the difference. Good to watch a couple of class acts strut their stuff, wonder how good they would be in the first division? Despite the improved performance we have now fallen three games behind the top four and have a lot of work to do in the second half of the season to bridge the gap and earn a place in the finals. RESERVES The reserves were outplayed by a strong North Heidelberg reserves team that is first on the ladder, having not lost a game this year. Jarrod Gloury and Andrew Sneddon were our best in the loss. UNDER-19s The under-19s played an entertaining 28 THE NORTHERNER good win and not give the supporters heart attacks or cause Super to blow a gasket! Best players were Moorey who was everywhere as always, Simmo and Big H who were great targets up forward, Bulldog and Matty D and Kreuz who played a great big man role after half time. All the best today fellas, it’s always good to have a win against Lalor. RESERVES Hopefully it feels as good for the players out there as it looks to all those who are watching on. Although Thomastown was struggling it was an imposing display of team unity that turned a win into a drubbing. Run from behind, numbers to the ball, switching, excellent talk, and more run from behind all led to the 20goal deficit at the end of the match. Let’s keep this up, but more importantly let’s do this against better sides and we will come out with wins. Winners all over the ground and hard to pick the best when everyone puts in, but well done to Indy with nine majors, Brown with run all day and a few switches to boot, Jarrod Agosta who was in and under all day. Luke Fowler was great in the middle and Fab, Rowds, Truk, Justin T and Santa impressed again streaming out of the backline and not letting anything through. Lalor will be out for a win today, but if we play like last round there will be nothing that can stop us. Good luck boys. game against Reservoir, pulling away in the last quarter for a good win. Seven goals to three in the fourth quarter was a great effort and the boys thoroughly deserved the 34-point win. Steven Deshong and Zac Chapman starred and each kicked four goals as the young Bloods pushed up to seventh on the ladder with three wins and four losses for the season thus far. NFL. ORG. AU 29 DIVISION 2 – Summary Eight rounds down and the top four has established a handy lead at the top of the table. We now take a moment to see how each team has fared over the opening two months of the 2012 season. Epping: The dominant force in Division 2 and yet to lose a game after falling to Lower Plenty in last year’s Grand Final. Looks solid in every line with new recruits John Kreuzer, Jarrod Tilley, Daniel Haynes, Matt Dornauf and Daniel Santoro all providing great service in the opening half of the year. Most definitely the team to beat as outlined by solid wins against fellow contenders Diamond Creek, North Heidelberg and Fitzroy Stars . Not even an early season injury to skipper Daniel Moore has halted its charge towards September Diamond Creek: Has suffered a shocking run of injuries in the early part of the season but has managed to continue winning games. Brent Gutterson has been superb up forward and has booted 36 goals, while Jai Norman is having a fine season in the ruck. Started the season in red-hot form and conceded just six goals in the opening fortnight as it thumped Hurstbridge and Thomastown by 120 and 140 points respectively. After falling in the preliminary final in each of the past three seasons, the Creekers look primed for a long awaited Grand Final berth. North Heidelberg: Endured the worst season in its history last year when it went winless in Division 1, but is well in contention for an immediate return to the top flight on the back of a 6-2 return from its first eight weeks in Division2. The Doggies lost Jarrod King to a seasonending foot injury but the return of Shane Harvey three weeks ago more than covers King’s absence. Ran Epping to within 10 points after looking a winner deep in the last term and will back itself if it meets the premiership favourite in September. Fitzroy Stars: Has surprised most of the competition with its quick accession from middle-tier team to premiership contender. Youngsters Jye Brennan and Jai Burns have impressed everyone with their composure and ball-winning ability while John Hayes and Patrick Davis have combined for 61 goals already. Won five of its opening seven away games before claiming a 56-point win over South Morang in its first home game at Victoria Park. Now plays six consecutive home games and has every chance of claiming a top two finish. Lalor: 12 months after looming as the side most capable of stopping Lower Plenty’s premiership dream last season, Lalor faces an uphill battle to even make the finals in 2012. Lost its opening four games of the season and sits 3-5, some three games outside the top four. Still yet to win a game against a side placed above it on the ladder and still too reliant on forward Peter Shepherd who has 40 goals in just seven games which includes bags of 10 and eight in wins over South Morang and Hurstbridge. South Morang: Started the season in competitive fashion, winning two of its opening three games, but a run of five consecutive losses has ended any chance the Lions had of making this year’s finals series. Mathew Pow has been a star up forward while Simon Grossman has been a great acquisition, however a series of second half fadeouts has cost the club at least three wins this year. Must respond against Hurstbridge and Thomastown over the next two weeks. Thomastown: Has won just one game in eight weeks but has been competitive in many of its losses and must be confident of winning a handful on games in the run home. Has twice run Epping within seven goals and only a third quarter lapse cost it victory against Lalor. Michael Manley’s serious shoulder injury has hurt dearly, however the form of recruit Raafat Rachrache has been heartening with the midfielder managing to push forward for 12 goals already this season. Hurstbridge: Winless after eight games and faces a tough battle to remain in the second division. Performed admirably against Epping when it lost by just 15 points and enjoyed a massive crowd in Round 8 when Jason Akermanis donned the Bridges jumper for their clash with Diamond Creek. Youngster Sean Jellie has been a shining light while Ben Fennell continues to inspire. NFL. ORG. AU DIVISION 3 – Summary It’s back to a full fixture of games in Division 3 this week after last Saturday’s results saw Panton Hill and Reservoir victorious from the two Queen’s Birthday weekend matches. The Redbacks etched a step closer to securing a double chance in the finals when they outlasted a youthful St Mary’s outfit at Cracknell Reserve. With only six points separating the sides at half time, Panton Hill restricted the Burras to just one goal in the second half before running out a 30-point winner. Benn Parker was best afield, while Simon Amore and Abe Williams played arguably their best games for the club. Up forward it was Jonathon Byron who again did the damage, booting seven goals to take his tally against St Mary’s to 16 from two outings this season. The win moved Panton Hill back to the top of the Division 3 ladder ahead of today’s top of the table clash with Mernda. It’s shaping as the biggest game of the season to date with the Demons’ only loss of the year coming against the Redbacks when they first met back in Round 2. On that day Mernda recorded eight more scoring shots but fell to a 9.20 (74) to 13.8 (86) defeat at Mernda Recreation Reserve. Since the 12-point loss, Mernda has won its past five matches and heads into this important clash on the back of a week’s rest courtesy of last weekend’s bye. Skipper Rohan Davies has been superb so far in 2012, while recruit Tim Atkins has made an immediate impact, as has Jai Robinson since returning from VFL duties. A win today would make Panton Hill the short-priced favourite for this year’s minor premiership and move it two games clear in first place, however a victory to the Demons will propel them to the top of the ladder given their superior percentage. After ending a three-game losing streak with its 73-point win over Heidelberg West, Reservoir jumped back into third place on the ladder at the expense of St Mary’s. The Mustangs did the damage early against the Hawks, booting 12 goals to two in the first half to take a commanding 64-point lead into the half time break. Toby O’Meara booted a season-high seven goals, while Ashley Flavel and Kent Beaumont combined for another seven as the Mustangs recorded their first win since May 12. Watsonia will have a new head coach for today’s game with Dean McCluskey named as replacement for Gavan Taylor who departed the club following its four-point loss to Heidelberg West a fortnight ago. A statement on the club’s website read: “Following our eight week performance review, covering all areas within the club, Watsonia Sporting Club wishes to advise all players and members that we have mutually parted ways with our senior coach Gavan Taylor. All involved with Watsonia Sporting Club thank Gavan for his work over the past 18 months and wish him well with his future endeavours.” Having won just once in their opening seven games, the Saints will hope for a better finish to the season under McCluskey. In the final game of the round Parkside travels to Binnak Park for a mid season elimination final with St Mary’s. If the Devils are to have any chance of making the 2012 finals series they must win today and break a losing streak that dates back to Round 4. A loss would see Parkside fall three games behind the top four and would surely draw curtains on any remaining finals aspirations. St Mary’s last week fielded three debutants in its clash with unbeaten Panton Hill and despite its inexperience stayed with the Redbacks until the final term. Daniel Dober booted four majors in his first senior match, including a contender for goal of the year on his left foot from deep inside the forward pocket. His efforts earned high praise from Panton Hill coach Dean Haydock who awarded him three votes in the Coaches Player of the Year Award. NFL. ORG. AU 35 DIVISION 3 ST MARY’S Our under-19s and girls had a weekend off along with just about everyone else in the league. That left just our seniors and reserves to make the trek up the road to Panton Hill. REZZIES The twos were up for a big test given we spoilt the Redbacks’ party last time when they unfurled their 2011 flag. It went pretty much to script from the first bounce with the boys getting away to a flyer kicking 7.1 to a solitary behind which set the pattern for much of the game. Winning the ball out of the centre almost meant we could spread the goal shooting options around and we took a 50-point lead into half time. The third quarter was pretty much the same, extending our lead to 70 points. At three-quarter time Pezz asked the boys to run the game out and the boys pulled out all stops, kicking 7.3 to one goal, giving us a fantastic win by 109 points. Spreading the goal kicking amongst 10 players, the major contributor was Braze kicking four and proving his value around the club. Who would have thought that in the space of two years we would reverse the whopping we got from the Redbacks in our first game when they knocked us off by 102 points? Well done fellas, keep on improving and PARKSIDE The Queen’s Birthday long weekend gave everyone a chance to get away from footy for a weekend. On the injury front the week off came at the perfect time with Simmo and Chrissy getting another week to get over a bout of strained groins. Gilbo was another who used the break to get away from the footy field and freshen up after the Mernda crowd took a shine to him and were chanting his name after he dropped a chest mark and then got done holding the ball. It has been an even longer break for Squizzy Taylor after he got rubbed out. He has taken the two-game suspension so seriously he suspended himself from training. AROUND THE CLUB Shannon “The Wiz” Ware, the club’s number one ticket holder and Melbourne’s fiercest postman, is apparently very close to missing out on team of the decade honours after good 36 THE NORTHERNER the rewards will keep coming. SENIORS A challenge we always look forward to is playing Panton Hill at their home. It is always a great measure to see where we are at on a ground they play really well. With the under-19s having a bye it gave us a good opportunity to look at a few younger boys who have impressed to date. Promoted into the side this week we saw Daniel Dober, Jarrod Millett and Nick Daisley play their first senior games. The boys accounted themselves pretty well with Dobes a standout bagging four goals, one of which came on his left foot from the boundary line that was ‘Buddyesque’ and had everyone applauding. The game itself was fairly similar to our first encounter for the first three quarters with only four points, six points and 11 points separating both teams at each break. The last was going to go down to the wire, but where we thought our younger and fitter bodies would prevail it was their bigger bodies that won out on the day. Panton Hill got two fairly quick ones on the board that probably took any wind out of our sails. We managed just one behind for the quarter as the Redbacks went on to record a deserved victory. We look forward to playing you guys again in Round 17 at our place where the temperature is bound to be at least 15 degrees warmer! SOCIAL NEWS Organisation for the Sportsman’s Night on July 14 is almost finalised with Dean Jones, Greg “Diesel” Williams, Alex Marcou (get the theme) to name just a few. With limited seating see Soley or Liz quickly for tickets. Start getting your acts together for the infamous Mr St Mary’s Night coming up at the end of season. We are looking for more acts this year to really make the night a classic. See Soley again for details. And don’t forget the Dinner Dance on July 28 at the Grande in Epping. WHEEL OF MISFORTUNE Things were a bit tamer last week with Cez, Chiva and Schulzy getting the nod. Cez got off lightly, having to assist Big Tone doing early morning ground duty, Schulzy cracked it because he had to mow the coach’s lawn but the big ticket item was watching Chiva do a Rocky and down six raw eggs in one go. Family Values, Family Focus, Family First mate and self-appointed chief selector Brad Hockey decided to give Andy Bennet the forward pocket spot. The Wiz has called the forward pocket his own for the best part of ten years and once kicked six goals against St Mary’s in its first season in the league, back when the side finished on the bottom of the ladder. Hopefully he can score a spot on the extended bench. FOOTY TRIP Footy trip money needs to start coming in, so please see Junior for more details. Davo’s, AKA Boofta, new fine system will continue to ramp up in the following weeks and hopefully start to raise some much needed funds. The fine system has raised a huge three dollars so far, and is doing a roaring trade so be sure to behave yourself or Boofta will be after you. UPCOMING FUNCTION The next function is only weeks away with the Mexican themed fiesta to be held on June 23 after our home game against Heidelberg West. Friends, family and acquaintances welcome. TWITTER Brad Hockey is having trouble getting friends in the twittersphere so let’s try to give him a chop out. He said if he gets 30 followers he will send a signed boot to a lucky fan. You can find him with @ TheHock11. Currently he is following his favourite AFL players @majakdaw and @ toddgoldstein22. Add him on Facebook while you are at it as well. NFL. ORG. AU 37 DIVISION 3 PANTON HILL The wet conditions on the small Cracknell Reserve ground probably favoured the undermanned Panton Hill side against a high quality St Mary’s outfit last Saturday. SENIORS The Redbacks started the better side in a straight kicking and furious first quarter. At one stage we got out to a three-goal lead, but by quarter time we held a narrow five-point margin. Things tightened up in the second quarter in gloomy conditions with the game poised at the main break for a big second half. Brett Thorn was dominating but left the field early in the quarter with a dislocated shoulder. The Burra hit the front soon into the third quarter but the Hills wrestled back the lead to hold the advantage at the final break by 11 points as injuries to Lauchy Pearson and Daniel Pratt started to take their toll. But in the last quarter the Hills knuckled down with no bench left to grind out probably one of their best wins of the season in the circumstances, finishing with a 30-point victory. Joffa Byron managed seven goals up forward MERNDA Since you last read the Mernda Murmurs, Melbourne beat Essendon! But this is best left to Mike Sheahan to report on, while I report on this brilliant club. SENIORS Our last game was two weeks ago, and a 100 point win doesn’t show how competitive Parkside were throughout the game. Led by Cameron Curlis with six and Jai Robinson who was brilliant, Mernda put in the complete team effort in the second half. It was a much better than our difficult second half the week prior against Reservoir where we failed to kick a goal. It was important we put in a four quarter effort ahead of a mammoth match ahead against Panton Hill. RESERVES To hold a team goalless, no matter who the opposition are, is fantastic and shows the excellent defensive pressure that has been developed by the boys. Although the gulf in class was there, Parkside never ever gave up and kept 38 THE NORTHERNER under a lot of pressure whilst Benn Parker continued his good form and Abe Williams, Simon Amore and Ben Strongman dominated the midfield to bring the ball forward time and time again. Senior coach Dean Haydock was very happy with the solid win and now looks forward to the top of the table clash against Mernda today. RESERVES The reserves were undermanned and brought in a number of fill-ins to battle against a very fast St Mary’s side, filled with some under-19 youngsters. Unfortunately the Hills were no match for their more accomplished opposition and ultimately went down by a big margin. Matt Layt was the most outstanding of the Panton Hill players in the conditions. With some players back, a better performance is expected today against another tough opposition. WELCOME BACK TO THE HILL To our past players, members, officials, supporters and life members, welcome back to the Hill today. We hope you enjoy the day and get another taste of local Redbacks footy. We need your support to make this a most successful year after such a promising start. Thanks for coming. Jayden Welch was best for our boys, and Shane Martin kicked five goals. The reserves’ win means we have now won seven games in a row and sit undefeated atop the ladder. UNDER-19s We were outclassed but we certainly weren’t embarrassed. Without a bench, the boys put in a brave and valiant effort against a brilliant group of lads. Nick Avenoso was one of our better players, kicking a couple of goals along the way, and Adam Ryan played some decent football too. Don’t feel down about the loss boys, it was a wonderful effort with all factors considered. TODAY Massive, massive, massive game. Last time Panton Hill and Mernda played, Panton Hill took a well deserved win from Schotters Road. The Redbacks haven’t looked back since, winning every game. NFL. ORG. AU 39 DIVISION 3 RESERVOIR Excellent start by the seniors although some easy misses at goal, particularly early, has to be rectified if we are to beat the top sides. SENIORS Keyes back after injury gave us first use of the ball and Rooney had his zip back and showed a clean pair of heels in the wet slippery conditions. Toby’s topped off his marking with seven goals but it could have easily been 11. By beating Heidelberg West for the second time in seven weeks the seniors became the proud winners of the inaugural “White Ribbon Cup”. The cup is sponsored by Stockdale & Leggo Real Estate, 966 High Street Reservoir. RESERVES The reserves reversed the loss of the first round with a big win over West. The two boys from the under-19s showed they can take to next step and Brett in for his first game for the season will be better for the run. Cousins was again amongst the goals. WATSONIA The weekend started in fantastic fashion in the AFL with the mighty Tigers getting home over St Kilda. Now bring on those Pies!!! And what about the pretenders, Essendon? Haha. THE ONES What a game! We started well and were winning plenty of ball out of the middle and managed to pile on three quick goals to take an 11-point lead into the main break. Heidelberg West hit its straps in the second quarter and reversed the game. They kicked six goals to two in the second to be leading by 20 points at half time. We slowly got back into the game and lead by 14 points at the final break. The lead then changed several times and the result really could have gone either way. It was left to Cootsey to make the final decision and as we surged forward the siren went and we went down by just four points. Well done to West and thanks to them for staying around for a while....although Bryan Davis was hard to shake and he even followed us to the RSL. THE TWOS The boys were out for revenge after West 40 THE NORTHERNER UNDER-19s Had a bye which enabled the club to give Reece Miller a run in the seniors where he acquitted himself quite well. Dylan Cornford and Jack Dickman had a run in the reserves. FUNDRAISER Although the weather was not kind to the organisers of the stall in aid of Lyn Bryne who has suffered breast cancer, the girls did an excellent job in selling boutique gifts along with a BBQ. The girls also raffled many prizes for a great cause and congratulations goesto all involved. UPCOMING FUNCTIONS $5000 Draw: Sunday, June 17 – 11.00am onwards. Understand all tickets have been sold but if you want to come along on Sunday and enjoy a spit roast lunch, mystery prizes, $2 spirits glass between 11am – 1pm, $2 pots, $3 spirits and free soft drink then it will cost you $40. Past Players Day: Saturday, June 30 (Round 12). 90th Anniversary Ball: Saturday, July took the points in the first round, a loss that left Fos crying for days. This time around he wasn’t playing so we were looking good, with Simmo and Jimmy dominating from start to finish and we were always in control. Things are starting to fall into place after the loss of Logan and Fos will be back to replace him soon. Great win boys, let’s make sure we work hard after the bye to cement our position inside the top four so that we’re playing finals footy later this year. A special mention to Johnny Saw who has left a huge whole in our backline, and Im talking about the space he takes up! Only joking Forcer... good luck AROUND THE CLUB It was noted the Matty Crompton had different shorts on this week and a toe was detected. Big Al has a secret girlfriend but won’t declare who it is. Souva declared ’”I gave 100%” after playing four minutes of the game. Camma actually broke his hand at home, not being master of his domain! Matt Buckley asked for a pay rise and got told to “go get a hard ball’ Tony Hogg heads to play country footy where his IQ is higher. — The Northern Football League Record 7 (Round 13). AU WHISTLE Whispers A huge thanks to all who attended the Trivia Night last Sunday at the Garvey Oval rooms, and a special thanks also to Craig Herman for running the night. – Forner NEWS There were smarties galore “disputing the umpire’s decision” on the night; dummy spits and of course heaps of fun for all that turned up! It was a combined ‘ring-in’ team, headed by Di Herman which took away the prize at the end of the night (raising quite a few questions in the meantime)! I sense after there were a number of people missing from training last week that there may be a few people struggling for fitness in this round of matches. Not the best time of the year to be missing training, and for those that were there, surely you will have the advantage come finals time!! SLIP-UPS One very experienced umpire, Denis Paul Groom – or should that be Father Groom? – has been spotted frequenting church at St Damien’s parish. No doubt Denis would have been preaching the pro-biotic and spiritual qualities of a diet rich in VB, but also some valuable life lessons from the 61 year-old. No wonder he hasn’t been seen around the juniors for a few years. Staying on experienced umpires, it was Cam McPherson who is quoted as being “lucky to turn up” for his reserves game a couple of weeks ago. After countless years in the seniors, Cam’s return from injury was almost halted as he tried to remember what time the B Grade games actually start. It’s still not as bad as the shock you get waking up early for the under-19s as I have been subjecting myself to all year – continuing my “jack of all trades” reputation, waving the flags every Saturday morning, although at some times, also dropping the flags, as was witnessed last week at Reservoir. SOCIAL Our next social event is AFL night. This year, we’re heading to Carlton vs Richmond on Saturday night, July 28. Make sure you get your name on the attendance list at training, as if the past few years are anything to go by, then these tickets will go quicker than you can say “BALL!” THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record This will be followed closely by the long-awaited Night at the Dogs! $50/head for a buffet dinner (three course), form guide and parking included. Children under 12 can purchase tickets for just $15. Gates open at 6pm, with the last race to jump at 10:50. Saturday, August 11 at The Meadows race track. See the website for more details. Australians spend more than $500 million a year on bottled water, which is not only putting greater strain on the environment, it’s an expense we can easily avoid. Melburnians are rightly proud of our tap water, which is primarily sourced from protected natural catchments and requires very little treatment before we drink it. Medical experts agree that people should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day - more if they have been exercising or outdoors. So be healthy, Choose Tap! Yarra Valley Water is proud to be supporting sponsors of the Northern Football League. Through this partnership, we are helping to build strong local communities and encourage an active, healthy lifestyle through sports and recreation.
