This Sunday sees
the U/9s
commence with
a split round,
and all games
will be played at
Barling Park. The
purpose of this is to educate all
players and officials on the best way
to conduct the new format.
The new junior rules have received
great attention over the past week
and to assist with the education
of the new rules, I have listed
below some frequently asked
questions (FAQ) to help everyone
understand why the rules are being
implemented.
All NFL clubs have been extremely
supportive of the new rules, many
clubs have been trialling the rules
over the last few weeks, and the
feedback from clubs has been
overwhelmingly positive.
Core Message: The AFL’s Junior
Football Match Guide is a
framework that aims to provide
the best possible journey for young
players to progress their learning
and development towards the adult
version of the game. It seeks to
ensure a quality environment exists
whilst maximising the enjoyment,
fun and development of young
players. We believe a safe, positive
and progressive introduction to
the game is much more likely to
attract and retain young players of
all abilities.
Context: The AFL revamped junior
laws when the Junior Match Policy
was released in 2008 and have
revised it for re-release in 2014.
This has come off the back of a
two-year research project with
Deakin University and extensive
stakeholder engagement with State
THE NORTHERNER
bodies and junior leagues around
Australia.
Re-release: With its re-release,
the Junior Football Match Guide
aims to: ensure that junior football
is delivered in a uniform manner
across all States; provide clear
direction to leagues and clubs
for the provision of appropriate
pathways for all boys and girls in
safe, enjoyable and accountable
environments; maximise the
recruitment and retention of players
and umpires through programs
and match rules appropriate
to each age level; provide a
participation pathway that
considers the following principles
– comprehensive (levels of
participation that link), inclusive and
equitable (accommodates all young
people), coherent (prescribes links
between levels), developmental
(meets children’s needs) and
informed (by research and practice).
Junior Football Philosophy: We
don’t want to put kids in adult
environments too early and that
includes large grounds, congested
play, unnecessary physicality and
an over-emphasis on winning.
Our philosophy is: smaller fields
and reduced numbers; a phased
approach to scores, ladders & finals;
a sequential approach to tackling
and contact.
We want kids to progress through
3 phases as they develop their
skills and ability: NAB AFL
Auskick (introductory); U9/
U10 (development); U11/U12
(competition).
So what has changed? Not much
really. The research told us that our
junior rules framework is good for
the game.

FIGHTING FOR RESPECT
by Samuel Zito
Greensborough coach Robert Hyde believes an “us-
against-them” mentality played a part in his side’s
67-point upset win over Montmorency in Round 1.
After conceding the opening three goals of the game,
the Boro kicked 20 goals to six against last year’s beaten
grand finalist to kick off the 2014 season with a 20.13
(133) to 9.10 (64) victory.
Hyde revealed his disappointment at no
Greensborough player earning selection in the NFL
interleague team that defeated the EDFL a fortnight
ago. In contrast, Montmorency’s beaten Round 1 team
included four players – Ryan Jackson, Jesse Donaldson,
Shane Tennant and Pat Fitzgerald – that played in the
NFL’s 37-point win at the Metro Championships.
“I got a bit annoyed that we didn’t have one
representative in the NFL rep side,” Hyde said.
“I told my players to take that as an affront. Nobody
values us enough to have anyone in the rep side.
“It’s a little bit of us against them. It’s old fashioned, but
it’s the way we have to look at it.”
Playing with a distinctively harder edge, the Boro beat an
unusually flat Magpies outfit in every facet of the game.
After taking a 14-point lead into quarter time, the
home side stunned their more fancied opponent with a
seven-goal to three second term.
Leading by 39 points at half time, the Boro extended
their buffer to 52 at the final change before kicking the
opening four goals of the final term to take a game4
THE NORTHERNER

high 76-point lead.
Tall forwards Rhys Boyden, Tim Bongetti and recruit
Andrew Stellas caused havoc inside attacking 50m,
combining for 12 goals in the Boro’s first win over their
neighbour since Round 4, 2011.
Hyde was pleased with the way his forward line
functioned, but credited his midfielders for his side’s
dominance inside its forward half – culminating in a
20-9 win for marks inside 50m.
“I give credit to our midfield,” Hyde said.
“It’s not a glossy midfield but Ricky Mullins and those
guys are young and have been around. They’re not as well
credentialed as say Bronik Davies and Ryan Jackson, but as
a group they have matured since last year.”
After a big pre-season, which included three thumping
wins against slightly lesser opposition, Hyde said he
was unsure how Greensborough would perform in the
season opener.
But with every player buying in to his philosophy, the
Boro enjoyed their best performance since 2011 – a
season in which they finished third on the Division 1
ladder.
Hyde said the pressure was now on his team to play
with the same vigour and work rate on a consistent
basis.
The Boro will enjoy an extended break before taking
heading to Eltham Central Reserve for a blockbuster
clash with Eltham on Good Friday.
“We couldn’t beat Eltham once last year and our win
today is totally wasted if we get beaten by Eltham,”
Hyde said.
“The focus is on continuing our work rate, our effort
and what we believe in to meet those targets. The
scoreboard takes care of itself if we can meet our key
indicators.”
“As I said to the boys, it’s Round 1 and I think we caught
Montmorency on the hop.
“I’m not taking anything away from the way we played,
but they’ll be much harder to beat the next time we
play them.”
Hyde also praised new recruits Dan McLinden and
Michael Hooper who were both influential in their first
game for Greensborough.

SAINTS WIN CLIFFHANGER
by Anthony Bitzilis
Watsonia edged out a determined South Morang side
by six points in a physical contest at Mill Park Lakes on
Saturday afternoon.
The Saints led at every change, running out victors
11.15 (81) to 10.15 (75).
Both sides enjoyed periods of dominance, with not
much separating them for much of the day.
The win is even more impressive for the Saints
considering they were undermanned in the final term,
with Jarrod Magann (knee), Jeremy Bennett (neck) and
Joseph Abbas (ankle) all victims of the physical clash.
“To our credit we were able to run the game out pretty
well” Saints coach Damian Zanic said.
Zanic praised the efforts of his skipper Matthew
Crompton and his potent forward line.
Crompton led from the front when the game was on
the line, while a Mark Roumanos-inspired forward
line caused headaches for South Morang coach Craig
Lambert for the majority of the afternoon.
“On paper our forward line looks promising, but we need
to put it to practice more often” Zanic said.
The first quarter was highlighted by some bash and crash
football, with the Saints dominating most of the first term.
However they were unable to receive reward for effort,
holding just a nine-point lead at the first change.
South Morang was more fluent with its ball movement
in the second term, which translated to having an
impact on the scoreboard. Goals to Ashley Hobbs and
Luke Manning gave the Lions the lead early in the
second term.
The second term ended with Saints full-forward Jeremy
Bennett left worse for wear following a bone crunching
bump from Luke Manning.
Both players went hard at the ball which was in dispute,
with Bennett coming off second best and requiring
assistance off the field. He took no further part in the
match as Watsonia held a slender two-point advantage
at half time.
The crowd again paid witness to another momentum
swing, with Watsonia looking likely to run away with
the match, however the Lions stuck around and
narrowed the margin down to just 11 points at three
quarter time.
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
The Lions were able to lock the football inside their
forward half for the majority of the final term, but were
unable to convert. Both sides began to miss targets by
hand and foot, with fatigue becoming a major factor.
South Morang missed vital shots on goal late in the
match, which ultimately cost them the four points.
The Lions at one stage kicked five consecutive behinds
in the final term, making the margin all square with
minutes remaining.
A quick kick from congestion landed in the lap of Mark
Roumanos at the top of the goal square for the Saints,
and he converted from a rare forward entry in the final
term for the visitors, giving them a six-point lead with
seconds remaining.
The Saints remarkably held on to begin their 2014
campaign on a high. Skipper Crompton and Ben
Anderson worded hard in the engine room for
Watsonia, while Beau Cooper and Roumanos were
dangerous all day, booting three majors each.
For the hosts, Ashley Hobbs was impressive with three
goals, while Mitchell Buckley and youngster Jake Potter
both enjoyed good outings.
Watsonia return to A.K Lines Reserve for their first home
game of the season against the in-form Thomastown
next up, while South Morang travels across to
Heidelberg Park to take on Heidelberg West.

BEARS OFF TO A FLYER
by Jackson Baker
Lower Plenty started its 2014 season with an
impressive 43-point victory over Eltham at
Montmorency Park.
A ten-goal to two first half set up the impressive 15.14
(104) to 8.11 (59) victory – their second consecutive
opening round win over the Panthers.
A short passing possession game was the key to the
victory with Lower Plenty coach Vin Dattoli stressing to
his players they were a better side when they lowered
the eyes.
Kicking with a slight breeze in the first quarter,
the Bears came out firing early. They kicked four
unanswered goals before Eltham registered its first
major on the scoreboard.
In what was expected to be a close encounter, Lower
Plenty blew the game apart early.
The Bears used their run through the midfield and build
up possession play, switching the ball on numerous
occasions across the half back line, to open up the
Eltham defence.
The Bears midfield runners Matthew Vasilevski, Matt
Duckworth and Jackson Powell often gave Lower Plenty
first use of the ball with their run and drive from the
stoppages.
Darcy Barden and Ryan Gray played pivotal roles across
the half back line, providing the get out option and linking
run that was instrumental for the Bears game style.
There were plenty of changes in the off-season for both
sides, with a few of the new signings impressive in their
first outings in new colours.
Oliver Parks kicked four goals in his first game for the
Bears, including the first of the game. Coming across
from Division 2 side, Diamond Creek, Parks seemed
at home in Division 1 football and will prove to be a
quality pick up for the Bears if his first game is anything
to go by.
For Eltham, Leigh Catoggio impressed in his first game
back with the club after spending 2013 with Hurstbridge.
His drive off half back was one of the positives the
Panthers will be able to take out of the game.
Ex-Essendon forward Jay Neagle, a late inclusion to
the starting line up, started at centre half back before
spending the rest of the game up forward. His influence
6

was minimal with only the one goal, with the Bears
defenders able to nullify him from turning the game in
the Panthers’ favour.
Eltham began life without key players Paul Currie and
Brad Perry, and both were missed as the Panthers
seemed to lack composure moving the ball forward.
Gavan Connelly did his best to fill the holes left by
his departed teammates. He attempted to lead the
revival in the third quarter when Eltham looked to be
mounting a comeback after kicking three of the first
four goals of the quarter.
However, when Bill Barden slotted a goal nearing the
three-quarter time siren and then another at the start
of the last quarter, a Bears victory was inevitable.
The only injury scare for the Bears was a knock to
the knee of Patrick Flynn in a ruck contest in the last
quarter. He hobbled from the ground but re-appeared
in the forward line and should be fine to line against
West Preston-Lakeside in Round 2.
Eltham will have to wait until Good Friday before its next
encounter, when it takes on second-placed Greensborough
in a blockbuster clash at Eltham Central Reserve.
Final score:
Lower Plenty 15.14 (104) def Eltham 8.11 (59)

TIGERS WIN TOUGH
by Ben Pascuzzi
The new-looking Heidelberg got its 2014 campaign off
to the best possible start with a hard-fought win over a
gallant Macleod outfit at Warringal Park in Round 1.
A close game throughout, it was the Tigers’ ability to
convert their chances that proved the difference, as
they ran out winners 11.8 (74) to 9.14 (68).
Macleod was dominant early in the first term,
controlling possession and its forward pressure was
unmatchable. However, it was inaccurate kicking that
cost it dearly, kicking five behinds before its first major
came from a brilliant snap from Hayden Seivers.
After this goal the momentum started to shift the
Bergers’ way. Despite missing some easy chances first
up, Chaz Sargeant goaled to close the home side’s
deficit to three points at quarter time.
The second quarter was much of the same, with
contested play making goals hard to come by. The
Kangaroos were again inaccurate, dominating the
opening 10 minutes but only recording two points.
A red card to Joshua Henkel saw the tide swing
Heidelberg’s way, as a great chase down and conversion
from Jarrod Hodgkin saw the Tigers go into the second
half with a two-point lead.
But the story again was Macleod’s inaccurate kicking,
booting only three behinds for the quarter despite
producing plenty of run and carry to give their forwards
some options.
Matt Pow and Nick Lynch weren’t threatening and
needed to improve for Macleod to have any chance
of winning. But Heidelberg’s run off the back line was
superb, led by Ben Cosgriff, who was a brick wall in the
Bergers’ defence.
The third term started off with yet another Macleod
miss, which then sparked a remarkable coast-to-coast
goal from Heidelberg, with Michael Brunelli finishing
off the play.
Macleod remained dominant in possession and
forward pressure but couldn’t put it on the scoreboard,
kicking two behinds before Lynch marked strongly and
converted to hand the Roos back the lead by a solitary
point.
This sparked a three-goal burst for Heidelberg, with
goals to Sargeant, Charles Gaylard and Hodgkin. It
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
proved to be the decisive moment in the game.
The Roos ended the third quarter on top, kicking two
goals to run out the term trailing by five points and
with all the momentum. Lynch was starting to find his
range, taking his tally to two goals for the game as he
became a prolific figure in the Macleod forward line.
With the game in the balance, Heidelberg started the
final quarter perfectly, booting a goal through Sargeant
within 30 seconds of the restart.
It wasn’t long before another goal followed, as Luke
Hodgkin slotted one while tugging the boundary line
to give the Bergers a 17-point lead.
The Roos dug deep and kicked three in a row to trail by
a point with seven minutes remaining. They had all the
run and momentum and looked like they would run
away with the match.
However, Heidelberg was then able to capitalise on a
Macleod mistake and kicked two goals in a row to pull
away to a 13-point lead with two minutes remaining in
the match.
Lynch kicked one late to give the Roos some hope,
but it wasn’t enough as Heidelberg ran out a six-point
victor.
The Bergers’ best were Cosgriff, Jake Mcnamara who
was a prolific ball winner and Paul Bower who provided
plenty of run off the half-back line.
Macleod’s best were Hamish Paynter, Kane Shaw who
was rock solid in the back line and Lynch who bagged
five goals.
Heidelberg takes to the road this week when it clashes
with newly promoted Whittlesea at the Whittlesea
Showgrounds. Macleod tackles Northcote Park in a
massive encounter at De Winton Park.

DEES UP TO THE GRADE
by Jarrad Conron
North Heidelberg began the 2014 season in style with
a resounding 84-point win over the Fitzroy Stars at
Shelley Street Reserve.
The Bulldogs were able to get out of the blocks quickly and
never looked back, running away with a 19.11 (125) to 5.11
(41) win over last season’s beaten Division 2 grand finalist.
Lachlan Dowling was a standout up forward for the Dogs,
kicking seven goals. He was assisted by teammates Shane
Harvey and Matthew Mahony, who each slotted three goals.
Looking to improve on last year’s preliminary final
appearance, North Heidelberg came out firing, kicking six
goals to zero in a stunning first term.
It was much of the same throughout the second term
with Fitzroy putting up very little resistance and going
into the main break 43 points down.
It seemed as though the Stars would be able to close the
gap early in the second half, locking the ball inside their
attacking half in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
However, they couldn’t sustain their early ascendency as
. . . Editorial continued from Page 1
Specifically: We have actually softened our position
scores, ladders and finals which have shifted from U12s
to U11s. We have also done the same with tackling and
contact which used to prescribe modified practices
until U13s (now U11s). We have been more prescriptive
in terms of player numbers and ground sizes at each
age progression.
Why take out Scores, Ladders, Finals & Best players
at U10s? Fundamentally it is a rule to support coaches
and umpires – there is no pressure on to win games, and
to have a positive effect on parents and spectators – focus
shift to participation for all away from winning premiership
flags. We know the kids are aware of the scores but we also
know the main drivers for their participation is to have fun
and playing with their friends.
So why not full tackling until U11s? During the
development phase, we want to give every child
the opportunity to develop and execute their skills
following a recognised skill development model under
match conditions appropriate to them.
Why make the grounds smaller and reduce the
numbers? Kids cannot kick as far, run as fast or process
the same level of match information as adults – so why

the Bulldogs piled on seven unanswered goals, including
three to Dowling to go into the final break with an
unassailable 73-point lead.
No matter what the Stars did, they couldn’t break the
Bulldogs’ momentum. It was the home side continued to
do the attacking, going ahead by as much as 96 points in
the final term.
The Stars were able to kick consecutive goals for the first
time late in the match, but when the final siren sounded
they were left wondering what they had to change to
turn around the deficit the next time the two clubs meet.
The run and carry from North Heidelberg through
the middle of the ground set up many opportunities
throughout the match. A great team effort was also a
major contributing factor to the huge win, with every
player on the ground having an impact.
In Round 2, North Heidelberg will take on Mernda, who
defeated Panton Hill by 70 points in the season opener.
Fitzroy will look to get its first win for the 2014 season
against Diamond Creek at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval.
make them play on the same size field? We want to take
away the emphasis on endurance, reduce congestion
and ensure kids are more engaged in the game.
Kids “want” V “need s”: Often kids want to do things
they see teenagers or adults doing. This is no different
for junior players playing football. They “want” to
emulate the stars they watch at an AFL game, or who
they see playing on TV. Like a lot of things kids “want”,
it is the role of parents to take a responsible attitude
and decide what the “needs’ of the child are as opposed
to giving in to “wants”. This scenario is the same when
arranging junior football.
Policy V Framework: This is a framework and a guide
for the best possible conduct of the game. Whilst
leagues do not have to adopt its recommendations, we
strongly recommend that they do.
Ongoing research: We are currently working on a
methodology with Deakin University to continue our
research to ensure we have the best possible model for
kids, parents, coaches, umpires & administrators. More

Match Report versus Sandringham Dragons
On Saturday, April 5 the Northern Knights hosted our
first home game of 2014 at Preston City Oval against
the Sandringham Dragons. Coming off a confidenceboosting victory the week before against Calder, the
Knights were looking for a fast start to continue where
they left off. Unfortunately it was Sandy who got the
fast start with a four-goal to one opening quarter. The
Dragons added three more quickly after quarter time
to lead by 37 points. Sandringham’s pressure on the
Knights was relentless not allowing Northern to play
their natural game. Finally the Knights were able to
get some clean football forward to Reece McKenzie
who goaled, followed by another major to Matt Perry.
When Billy Murphy kicked a long goal just before the
half time break the Knights had started to fight back
and had dragged the margin to a manageable 19
points at the long break. The Dragons steadied after the
change with the first three goals of the third quarter
and the margin was back out to 38 points before Liam
Hunt roved a pack inside 50 and kicked a lovely snap
goal. Sandringham however continued to pile on the
pressure and added a further three goals to one to
take a 46-point lead into the final quarter. The Knights
battled hard in the last as injuries throughout the day
took their toll on the rotations. Goals to Zac Ballard
and Jake Wild kept the Knights in the contest but the
eventually the Dragons prevailed by 40 points. Jordan
Perry worked
tirelessly through
the midfield, while

players Jacob

Congratulations to former Northern Knights player
Dylan Buckley on being nominated as the NAB AFL
Rising Star for Round 2. Dylan, playing in just his second
game for Carlton, against Richmond on Thursday night
had an impact after coming in as a late replacement
for another former Knight Matthew Kreuzer. Buckley
collected 18 possessions at 94% efficiency, laid six
tackles among a number of promising signs. Dylan
was drafted as a father-son selection in 2011 and had
had to overcome a number of injury setbacks to get his
opportunity. We wish Dylan all the best for the rest of
the season and hope he continues his good form.

Division 1 – Preview
ROUND 2 — MORE SURPRISES?
by Samuel Zito
A draw, a surprise thrashing and proof that a
competition powerhouse remains a genuine force
were the headlines to come out of an amazing opening
round of Division 1.
It’s only Round 2 but the split-round already shapes
as season-defining for a number of sides ahead of the
Easter weekend. At one end of the spectrum, 2013
finalists Montmorency and Eltham are starring down
the barrel of 0-2 starts, while the Boro, Lower Plenty
and West Preston-Lakeside can head undefeated into
the early break.
The headline game of the opening week of the splitround is at Montmorency Park, where Montmorency
plays host to Bundoora in a replay of the 2013 Grand
Final. Last year’s agonising Grand Final loss should
be motivation enough for the Magpies ahead of
the encounter, however last week’s shock loss at
Greensborough may also play a motivating factor.
After booting the opening three goals of the game, the
Magpies looked lifeless as they conceded 19 of the next
23 goals. An injury to defender Daniel Coghill in the first
quarter and the sending off of midfielder Luke Jackson
in the second half didn’t help their cause, however it
didn’t nothing to excuse a forgettable performance to
kick off their 2014 campaign.
In stark contrast, Bundoora got its premiership defence
off to a flying start with a 99-point win over Whittlesea.
It was the second year in succession that the Bulls
handed out an opening-round hiding to a recentlypromoted side, after beating Epping by 102 points in
Round 1 last year. Gary Moorcroft was the star of the
show with eight goals in a side that featured eight
players who didn’t play in last year’s Grand Final win.
After kicking itself to defeat at Warringal Park, Macleod
will be looking to rebound when it hosts Northcote
Park at De Winton Park – a side it has beaten once
in each of the past four years. The Kangaroos will be
rueing an inaccurate start at Heidelberg – booting 2.11
in the first half before succumbing by just six points.
Northcote Park stole two points in its draw against West
Preston-Lakeside, managing just one goal in the opening
half before rallying from 27 points down to secure a draw
in a low-scoring match. Julian Violato was a standout for

the Cougars, holding the defence together under a West
Preston-Lakeside opening-half barrage.
West Preston-Lakeside now welcomes former coach Vin
Dattoli to J.E. Moore Park as the Roosters square off with a
Lower Plenty outfit which thrashed Eltham last week.
The Roosters looked slick and clean for three quarters
in Round 1 before seemingly running out of gas in the
final term. Luke Lirosi was a standout in his first game
since crossing from Epping, while tall Sam Gilmore
proved a handful for Northcote Park’s defenders.
The Bears will look to continue last week’s impressive
form, racing to an eight-goal lead at half time before
winning by 45 – their greatest winning margin since
returning to Division 1 in 2012. New recruit Oliver Parks
and Bill Barden combined for eight goals
Heidelberg makes a road trip down Plenty Road to
meet a Whittlesea side which will unfurl its 2013
Division 2 premiership flag. Ben Cosgriff marked
his return to the Tigers side with a best on ground
performance last week, while new faces Jake
McNamara, Paul Bower and Charles Gaylard all featured
in the best in their first game in yellow and black.
The Eagles matched Bundoora early in last week’s
encounter, before injury reduced the side to just 19 fit
players in the second half. Luke Deards was his side’s
best and managed to negate the influence of 2013
Frank Rosbrook Medallist Cameron Cloke, with the big
forward contained to just three of Bundoora’s 25 goals.
And in a first for the league, Eltham meets
Greensborough in a Good Friday blockbuster at
Eltham Central Reserve. The Panthers side will again
feature former Essendon forward Jay Neagle, along
with Collingwood 2010 premiership defender Ben
Johnson. Both will have to impress if the Panthers are
to reverse last week’s loss and overcome a highlyconfident Greensborough outfit.
The Boro’s forward trio of Tim Bongetti, Rhys Boyden
and Andrew Stellas ran amok against Montmorency,
booting 12 goals after some excellent service from
a midfield led by Lachlan McQuilken, Jason Rogers
and ruckman Michael Hooper. Despite last week’s big
win, the Boro will need to be wary of the rebounding
Panthers – a side they have lost to in each of their past
four outings.

MACLEOD
After a big pre-season build-up we came away from
Warringal Park empty-handed in all three grades.
SENIORS:
A game of wasted opportunities. At one stage we were
1.11 in the second term and couldn’t hit the side of a barn.
Finally we applied some scoreboard pressure in the second
half but the Bergers managed to kick the clutch goals.
Shawry, OB and Kel led a solid defence, Hammer and Joel
were tough around the contests and Lynchy kicked five.
RESERVES:
We were undisciplined early and went down by eight
goals. We butchered the ball on too many occasions and
gifted our opposition some easy goals. Nanners was terrific
and new faces Daniel Haynes and Jason Wood turned in
encouraging performances.
UNDER-19:
The boys had a big crowd watching the twilight game
and both sides turned on a really entertaining contest. The
margin was the same as the seniors – a one-goal loss – but
we have certainly found some players of the future.
MOTHER’S DAY LUNCH:
NORTHCOTE PARK
We were blessed again with the weather for the first
game of the season under lights on Friday night.
SENIORS: West ran riot for three quarters, putting our
defence under pressure. Julian was outstanding down
back, repelling the ball back to the midfield. The last
quarter was very exciting. We were down 14 points
but the boys had lifted for the last. Will chipped in with
two goals, Doug and Jason one each and we were very
lucky to come out with a draw. Best were Julian Violato,
Wade Demasi and Will Debruin.
RESERVES: Another hard fought contest, goal for goal
all day. The last quarter was another nail-biter, with one
minute to go the scores were tied up at 77 apiece, until
West scored a behind. We had 45 seconds to get the
ball to our forward line.We got as far as half forward
with the ball in the air when the siren sounded. Best
were James Hodder with five goals, Tyler Karakaltsas
and Jake Abbatangelo.
UNDER-19: Started with a fast moving first quarter,

OB 150: Congratulations to Daniel O’Brien, who makes
his 150th appearance in the seniors today. ‘OB’ has been
a model of consistency since coming through from the
junior club. He was a member of our 2009 Division 2
premiership side and has been a regular since we were
promoted in 2010. Make sure you’re in the rooms after the
game when OB receives a special plaque…his speech will
be worth the price of admittance!
kicking four goals to zero. We dropped off in the second,
letting West back into the game. The third quarter saw
both sides dig deep, with only five points the difference
going into the last. Our boys settled, kicking seven goals to
win. Better were Lachlan Boscarini, Daniel Costanzo with
seven goals and Gerard Sutton.
TODAY: We meet Macleod which is always a hard game.
We need to be at our best to walk away with three wins.
SOCIAL: The Friday night dinner was magnificent, with
good turn out from both sides and a few past players
and supporters. Dennis and Peter McNiece put together
a great evening. Thank you to Rosa, Stef, Maristel,

Last week started well down at the Bullring and ended
in a fashion that the football club isn’t about in 2014.
The result wasn’t overly flattering but the Bulls are the
yardstick for the comp and they whacked us with that
stick. Today we look for redemption and improvement
as we welcome Heidelberg to The Nest and we unveil
our under-19 and senior flags from 2013.
UNDER-19: The 19s were impressive in their come
from behind victory last week at Bundoora, with Chook
slotting through the decider after the siren from 30 out
to get the boys the four points. The celebration was
a little over the top for Round 1, but we aren’t sure if
Marko wasn’t the most excited. JC is back to the club
today to unfurl the 19s flag and we wish him the best of
luck at Kilmore.
RESERVES AND SENIORS: Will be both looking for a
greater showing and the opportunity presents itself in
the form of the Tigers. Gary’s lads are a work in progress
and their development will be a slow burn, but like
the seniors, we are all keen to see that these strides
HEIDLEBERG
After three strong wins to get the season rolling last
week the boys have their overnight bags packed for the
trip out to newly-promoted Whittlesea this Saturday.
SENIORS:
As 2.10 rolled around at Warringal; youth policy naysayers
grumbled discontent, condemning the Berg to failure
before 2014 had even begun. But by the end of the fourth
quarter, all that played witness saw the mark of a side
that are capable of big things. A gritty win against tough
opposition reinforced to everybody that you can’t keep a
good Berg down. Young players McNamara, Treloar and
Allery were amongst our best, a classy finish to snag the
sealer from Jimmy surprised nearly everyone.
RESERVES:
Started off where they left things in September last year
with a solid win following the unfurling of the 2013 flag.
Youth of the side excelled, with Powick, Ridewood, Kerton
and Looby dominating, sending us forward with purpose
on countless occasions. With the marks of a strong side
already, there is no doubt a welcome selection headache
will face the coaching panel each Thursday.

are taken and they have learnt from their outing at
Bundoora. It’s great to have Life Member and living
legend, Les Russell on hand today to unfurl the seniors
flag in place of Bug who is tied up with Craigieburn.
CRUISE TICKETS: The Carnival Cruise Lines tickets
are on sale today from the Clubrooms for $30 and we
welcome everyone to enter the draw. Only 300 tickets
on sale for a Cruise for 2 to Noumea for eight nights,
valued at over $1800.
LADIES DAY: Today is the last day for Early Bird
Purchases on the Ladies Day tickets. $40 for Saturday,
April 26 when we host Macleod. Five drinks on entry,
food, entertainment, raffles, giveaways and a heap of
laughs. See Kymmy, Kimmy or Breezer.
IMPORTANT: The Committee would like to remind
all supporters and members alike of the need to be
respectful to the umpires, opposition players and their
supporters. We encourage your support of the lads
playing, but unwarranted abuse and foul language will
not be tolerated.
UNDER-19:
Raft of first game players took to the stage at twilight,
having developed a fierce modern rivalry; the game was
always going to be fought tooth and nail. A three-quarter
time wake-up call saw the boys come home with a wet
sail to cap off the clubs third win for the day.
THIS WEEK: We head north to tackle the club that
claimed two of three flags in Division 2 last year, and will
be keen to get their 2014 moving in the right direction.
For Heidelberg, a chance for all sides to consolidate its
position at this early stage.
ANZAC DAY: Shaping as one of the best days the
club has played host to in a long time. Following the
Banyule ANZAC service on Burgundy St, the club will be
hosting breakfast, a chance to catch up and honour our
servicemen and women. Hang around afterwards and
watch two NFL heavyweights collide, with thehuge games
against Northcote Park. Reserves start at 10am, main
game at 1pm and the 19s at twilight at 4pm.

MONTMORENCY
After a very bright opening five mins which saw us
sprint away to a three-goal lead, you could have been
excused for thinking that last week was going to be a
walk in the park for Montmorency.
SENIORS:
Despite our fast start, Boro were not to be denied
going into the first break with a two-goal lead and they
continued in that vein for the rest of the day running out
as deserved winners. Today is a massive test against last
year’s premiers. This is a test of character today boys – we
need to bounce back and take the four points today.
RESERVES:
This was an enthralling game of footy with some firstclass passages of play from both sides albeit the game
could have been over at half time if we had kicked
straight. To their credit, Boro fought back well in the
third stanza and they ended up hanging on to record a
four-point victory. Kye Declase impressed in his first game
for the senior club and Drew Schleibs was BOG for mine.
Special mention too to Rob McConvill in his first game for
Mont, who was rock solid in defence. A big day for us at
BUNDOORA
A solid season opener with both the seniors and
reserves having comfortable victories and the under19s going down after the final siren.
SENIORS:
A monumental day with the unfurling of our 2013
premiership flag. Whittlesea gave a good showing for
most of the game and their young side certainly has
a great deal to look forward to. This week we take on
Montmorency in a repeat of the 2013 Grand Final. They
will be out to atone for last year’s defeat. Remembering
that they gave us a real lesson at their ground last
year. Goals: G. Moorcroft 8, S. Mamone 4, B. Carlyon 4,
C. Cloke 3, R. Dyson 2; Best: B. Shaw, G. Moorcroft, J.
Palazzolo, K. Delbridge, M. Evans, B. Carlyon
RESERVES:
Our reserves had a workmanlike win and it was
encouraging to see a few new faces in Bulls colours.
Goals: M. Brown 6, J. Lord 3, T. McEwan 2, T. Keating 2;
Best: J. Chapman, M. Ferraro, M. Aquilina, T. Keating, M.
Brown, B. Gray

the Nest today against a team that has been hard to beat
over the last few years, but we have every confidence.
UNDER-19:
The match of the day for mine. The scoreboard may not
reflect it but this was a cracker of a game with some
excellent footy played by both sides. It was a tight and
intriguing struggle for most of the day, and it wasn’t until
the last few minutes of the game that Mont was able to
break free to win by 13 points. Well done boys! Now for
the next challenge!
SOCIAL:
Don’t forget there will be live music immediately after
the final siren so get into the club rooms for some great
entertainment. Our first Business Lunch is just around the
corner on May 9. See the website for more details.
GO MONT!
UNDER-19:
The under-19s got themselves into a winning position and
should take a great deal out of the performance. Goals:
L. Simmons 3, C. Morel 2, M. Lawson 2; Best: D. Aujla, M.
Lawson, J. Bennett, A. Parisi, L. Pender, K. Doddato
GOLF DAY:
On Sunday we had our Golf Day at the New Atrium in
Safety Beach. A good day was had by all and no doubt a
few sore heads on Monday morning. A big thank you to
Kevin Brown for his hospitality and to Shane Dyson and
all at Dyson’s buses for supplying the bus.
MEMBERSHIP:
Please see Otto Grossman or anyone on the committee. $110
male membership and $70 for pensioners and females.
MERCHANDISE: See Maureen Grant or Bronwyn Graham.
SOCIAL: Anzac Day Eve Gala Event is one of our major
functions for the year. Sportspersons evening with
John Sylvester (Sly of the Underworld), Simon Marshall
(former top jockey and of BC3 Thoroughbreds fame)
and comedian Des Dowling. $110 please see anyone on
the committee to organise your table.

Division 1
West Preston-Lakeside
After a couple of tight and tough games to open the
season, we welcome former coach Vinnie Dattoli back to
Moore Park for what looms as an exciting day of footy.
LAST WEEK: Three good games in the senior ranks. A
draw under lights for the senior team, were we stiff or
lucky in the end? Best were Bulldog, Sam Gilmore and
the new Bonna. In the two’s old Bonna was best with
four goals and assisted by Trent Lang and Stinger in a
close fought victory. The 19s were in the game for most
of the day but fell away in the end. Best were Matt V,
Valeri D and William Doran. A highlight for the weekend
was our very first venture into girls footy with a draw
for our under-15 side!!! Other junior results had an even
spread of wins and losses.
MINI DRAW: Thanks to every one who supported this
early season event. A good time was held and Bulldog
got the prize!!!
LADIES LUNCH: This SUPER day is not that far away –
Saturday, May 17. Put it in your diary now and watch
this space, the notice boards for further details.
lower plenty
Vinny’s old home in West Preston has never been a
happy hunting ground for us Bears but today provides
a perfect opportunity to change that up.
SENIORS:
An emphatic first up win at the Cave was an ideal way
to start our 2014 campaign. We had a lot more size
on the park than we’re used to which gave Vinny a lot
more flexibility. Eltham battled their way back into the
contest in the third quarter but never really got close
enough to challenge. Darce mopped up everything
across half back, Flynny and Olly dominated the ruck
and our forward line and midfield stayed dangerous all
day. Jacko and Skillsy just about had it on a string.
RESERVES:
Sharpy’s job was made pretty difficult losing Coursey
and Patto five minutes into the first. The side was
juggled around continuously as the injury toll
increased. We got out to about six goals up in the
third but weight of numbers gradually wore us down.
We lost by nine points but very nearly hung on for a
courageous win with 16 players lasting the full journey.

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
1974 REUNION: Laurie Tilley got together a few of the
club’s older players for a premiership reunion last night. We
trust that every one had a fine old time and that those still
around today enjoy watching the sides run around.
MEMBERSHIP TICKETS: Are available from all the usual
suspects and outlets today. Get yours now and support
the mighty Roosters!
SPECIAL EFFORT: First prize is a Cruise for Two valued
at $2000. Only 300 tickets max, at $30 each. See the
usual suspects or the bar staff for your ticket.
JUNIORS: Plenty of good games on again on Sunday,
with a Members Draw around 5:30pm back at the
rooms. The girls play their first home game at 1PM on
the top ground.
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Joe Privitelli and
CENTURY21, located in Broadway in Reservoir, have
jumped on board again this year. Make sure that we
support those who support us.
PLAY OF THE DAY: In our very first foray in girls footy,
Ciara Fitzgerald kicked three goals helping us to a draw.
Welcome back Azza Geary and Grovesy, Smitty got
leather poisoning and all in all a brave effort first up.
UNDER-19:
Sleepy got the boys playing some good footy for a lot
of the afternoon. Lack of numbers and lack of access to
fresh legs was always going to make for tough going
late in the game and that’s the way it panned out. Best
players were Tom Basset-Smith, Will Rogers, Brandon
Jones, Anthony Di Paolo and Dozz.
FIDA:
The Fida Bears topped off a great weekend of footy at
the Cave by grabbing their first ever win. The boys had
a great day in front of a big crowd and put some icing
on the victory with a massive celebration.
MEMBERSHIPS:
Lady Bears memberships are for sale for $100 which
includes entry to all games and the Lady Bears Lunch
(at a reduced price). Please see Marissa Barden.
Caveman Memberships are also available. $550 gets
you two lunches, shirt, entry to all games, ticket in the
$5K draw and a meal every Thursday night. See Steve
Leropolous.

with the under-19s who, after an even first half, were
greensborough
What a great start to the season. We were confident
going into the Montmorency game and the boys
played a game style that excited everyone who came
along to watch.
SENIORS: Our midfielders were ferocious at the
contest, our forwards provided highlights with some
great marking and the defenders played tight.
RESERVES: A real gutsy win. Things looked very bleak
at quarter time and even worse at half time. Not sure
what happened at the main break but it was like a new
team came out in the second half.
UNDER19: It was a high class game and both sides
played very well. A number of players had excellent
games but we were unable to get over the line.
THIS WEEK: We take on Eltham and Robert has had the
boys fully focussed on the games importance. We are
still hurting from being beaten by them last year but
with a new found belief the boys are going to prove
extremely hard to hold out.

able to get away in the second half to score a strong
win by 25 points. The margin could have been greater if
not for an inaccurate 3.10 in the last quarter. Harry was
the star of the game with a best on performance and
five goals.
RESERVES: The reserves trailed Lower Plenty all day in
a low-scoring game and were still down by three goals
down at three-quarter time, but in the last quarter we
were able to double our score kicking 5.4 while holding
Lower to a solitary point. The Freeman twins were
standouts on the day.
SENIORS: The seniors had a shocker, allowing Lower to
run all over us in the first half which resulted in an eightgoal deficit at half time. The only real saving grace was that
we were able to hold Lower even in the second half, as it
looked like it could turn out pretty ugly.
MEMBERSHIPS: Good Friday will also be your last
chance to buy a half price $50 membership ticket for
the season (normally $100), which entitles you to FREE
entry into all home and away games.
SOCIAL NOTES: As today’s game is on Good Friday
we will have a couple of beers and then enjoy the
remainder of Easter. Our opening function starts the
week after with the Beach Party.
AROUND THE CLUB: It is great that old faces have
joined the ranks to help out on game day in various
roles and duties. Alan Baird, Russell Dickson, Chris
Beadles, Dez Leahy, Steve Ellis and his older brother
John all want to play a part in the Boro resurgence.
Every one of the aforementioned forged mediocre
careers with the mighty Boro and each will bring a level
of football smarts and savvy to their respective groups.
What level has yet to be determined?
NETBALL: We have five teams this year with plenty of
new faces at the club, a big welcome to them all! A big
thanks to committee members Jac, Emma and Jayne for
all the hard work they put in before the season started.

Division 2 – Preview
WHEN STARS COLLIDE
by Michael Thompson
North Heidelberg made the first statement of 2014,
with an emphatic dismantling of 2013 beaten grand
finalist, the Fitzroy Stars.
The Bulldogs were simply scintillating in their 19.11
(125) to 5.11 (41) victory over the Stars, and perhaps
the most encouraging sign for the Dogs was the fact
they didn’t need a huge level of Shane Harvey brilliance
to spark them. Instead it was Lachlan Dowling who
took over, kicking seven goals in his first game for
North – outscoring the Stars’ entire score in the process.
Harvey still kicked three goals, aided by Matthew
Mahony who also kicked three.
Having made the big statement for the season ahead,
the Dogs travel to Mernda this week, who was also
impressive against Panton Hill. With five club debutants,
as well as two senior debutants, the Dees took no time
to get going, piling on 14 opening-half goals, led by six
of the best from Andrew Smith. Jai Robinson kicked five
goals as the Dees took out a 24.16 (160) to 13.12 (90)
victory. The result means that for the second year in
succession there will be a 1st vs 2nd matchup in Round
2 at Schotters Road.
Another side who made the competition stand up and
take notice was Hurstbridge who made the short trip to
Diamond Creek and returned with the four points, kicking
16.12 (108) to 11.10 (76). Michael Ryan, having made the
move to the Bridges from Bundoora over the off-season,
was sensational on debut for the club. He kicked two
goals, alongside Dale Eames who also played well. The
Bridges were 25 points up at half time before weathering a
Diamond Creek challenge to kick away.
Lalor weathered an early storm from Epping in the first
quarter to come back and start 2014 in a much better
fashion than 2013, taking out a 17-point victory over
the Blues, 12.13 (85) to 10.8 (68). Scott Dowell kicked
three goals for the Bloods. Jarrod King, on debut for the
club following his big move from North Heidelberg, was
solid in his first game in red and white and kicked a goal
for good measure.
Last week’s results means that we’re in for an intriguing
Round 2 which should see two sides get off the mark
for 2014, whereas two sides will sit pretty atop the
Division 2 ladder undefeated.

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Hurstbridge will host Lalor at Ben Frilay Oval, in a clash
which saw Lalor take a tense two-point victory last time
the two sides played. The fillip for the winner would be
a 2-0 start. Considering Hurstbridge won five games in
season 2013 and Lalor four, both sides would treasure
such a start.
Round 1 disappointments Fitzroy Stars and Diamond
Creek will do battle at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval. Fitzroy
will be keen to bounce back, and with big names such
as Allan Murray, Lionel Proctor and last year’s Grand
Final best on ground medallist Malcolm Dow, will be
keen to put aside the Round 1 aberration in a hurry.
It will face a stern challenge from Diamond Creek
however, who had some solid performers in the loss
to Hurstbridge. Rikki Stephens kicked four goals
last Saturday, getting his season off to a very solid
start, whilst Daniel Carmody also put in a very good
performance and received the three coaches votes from
Jono Manzoney. Finals sides last year - both sides will
not be keen for a 0-2 start.
Epping hosts Panton Hill at the ground where the
Redbacks ended their 58-year premiership drought
last September. Epping will be disappointed it could
not capitalise on a 19-point quarter time lead against
the Bloods. Harley Nancarrow kicked four goals for the
Blues, but will be keen to get back on track for their
push to return to Division 1.
Despite its 70-point loss, Panton Hill showed some
good signs during the game, in particular the second
quarter when it booted four quick goals to close within
a goal of the Demons. However, it was not able to go on
with it. It was a slow start for the Hillers in their quest to
stay up in Division 2, but they will take big inspiration
from their one-point triumph over Watsonia in the big
dance last season.

HURSTBRIDGE
Last week we travelled to Diamond Creek, in what a lot
of people expected would be a one-sided affair.
SENIORS:
We had not had a winning senior side against Diamond
Creek since 2003, but this was all to change. With a
good blend of young and old blokes and led by some of
our recruits Chopper, Fatboy, Burnsy, Mikka and Hoggy,
along with some of our youngsters Tommy, Riley, Dec’s
and Easto we knew we could match it with Creek. With
a four-goal lead at half-time we felt it should have
been more after making a few little errors. With that
in mind, we knew Diamond Creek had a sniff, thinking
they could over run us. The third quarter saw a real arm
wrestle with our guys really standing up and clinging
on to a three-goal lead going into the last. We then
kicked away with a gutsy five-goal win to take back the
Glenn Fleming trophy.
RESERVES:
We went into the game very optimistic and looking to
knocking off last year’s premiers. Unfortunately that
was not the case with Diamond Creek showing us why
they are the reigning premiers with harder running and
LALOR
Last Saturday was built to be a busy one as we were
hosting our arch rivals Epping, who had just returned
from Division 1.
LAST WEEK:
The day started with ensuring all those little jobs like the
scoreboard and time keeper were organised. The gate
man was in position, the canteen was ready to go and
the bar was stacked with enough beverages to cater
for a big crowd, and yes, it was a big crowd as some 800
patrons entered the ground on the day and they were
not disappointed. Our sponsors started with lunch and
received a great insight into two cult figures in Laurie
Serafini and Vinnie Catoggio. Thanks for your time guys.
UNDER-19:
The under 19s had a tough battle with their Epping
opponents, only going down by three goals in the end,
in what was an entertaining game.
RESERVES:
The twos boys also had a good battle with Epping, but like
28
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
better disposal to run out convincing winners.
UNDER-19:
With a tight first half, our boys took a nine-point lead
going into the half time break. After half time it was
all Diamond Creek kicking six goals to three in third
quarter. Down by a couple of goals at the last change
coach Kev demanded his guys to run and play on at
every opportunity and that’s what they did, led by
Tieren Barbera, Mitchy Thompson, Joel Dale and Jake
Orchard. The boys were able to keep the opposition
goalless in the last quarter and bang four goals to come
home with an 18-point win.
TOOL OF THE WEEK:
“Doggy” for attempting to sing the Hurstbridge theme
song in the Diamond Creek rooms after the match.
MEMBERSHIPS:
Are available now. Please log on to the Hurstbridge
website for details.
NETBALL:
Good luck for the 2014 season to all our netball girls.
There is no better way to start the weekend than
getting down to support the girls on a Friday night.
the reserves, unfortunately went down by a few goals.
SENIORS:
The one that really counted was the senior game, with
the 22 realising that all that hard work over pre season
counts for something and helps make you able to finish
off those tight games early season. Congratulations
to Steve Marshall for winning his first game as senior
coach with the Bloods and we look forward to taking
on Hurstbridge this week after their good win. It should
be an interesting start to the season.
AROUND THE TRAPS:
Don’t ever get court straightening your hair after the
game in the change rooms as you might find it hard to
look your mates in the eye, even if the girl your trying to
impress is a stunner. Do it at home.
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: This week’s sponsor of the
week goes to Volvo buses. We appreciate your support
and were rapt to see Tofts fly all the way back from
Singapore to attend the game against Epping.

FITZROY STARS
What a horrendous start to the 2014 football
season, with both sides soundly beaten at North
Heidelberg last week.
FOOTBALL:
Both the senior and reserves sides were exposed
by a lot fitter opposition at Shelley Street Reserve
last Saturday. North Heidelberg was extremely
well prepared and showed us how important a
pre-season is for the early part of the season. It is
probably better that we learn from our mistakes of
last week and move on quickly. Special mentions
have to be made for our two defenders in Cozza
and Phelpsy who battled manfully all day. This week
we are focusing on Diamond Creek at Sir Douglas
Nicholls Oval and getting our season back on track.
DIAMOND CREEK
Just one win from three matches last Saturday. Here is
to more success in Round 2 before the Easter break.
SENIORS:
A disappointing day to begin the season. Full credit
to Hurstbridge who came to play with an intensity we
were unable to match. There were only a few positives
for us to take away, but the most important one is the
opportunity to do something about the position we
find ourselves in. Goals: D. Carmody 4, C. Burton 2; Best:
R. Stephens, D. Carmody, J. Whitehouse-Summers, S.
Whitmore, A. Campbell, S. Cosma
RESERVES:
We kicked off 2014 against arch-rival Hurstbridge at
home. It was very even in the first half and the boys
had to dig deep to eventually run out good winners.
It was pleasing to see a good spread of better players
including the boys new to senior footy. Goals: M.
Johnson 4, M. McKenzie 3, N. Ferrari 3, D. Padget 2, L.
Campitelli 2; Best: D. Padget, J. Barnes, B. Adams, M.
Robinson, N. Searl, L. de Pyle

NETBALL:
Thankfully our netball girls had a lot more successful
start to the season on Friday night. Our A-grade
girls had a four-goal win over Lakeside, 38 to 34. The
B-grader team also had a win, beating South Morang
by 22 goals, with the final score 37-15. Our C-grader
girls won 31-15 against Bundoora and our D-grade
team unfortunately went down 20 to 15 against
Hurstbridge. Overall three wins from four matches
made it a positive start to the year. Well done to our
girls for a great start.
TOOL OF THE WEEK:
Based on last week’s performance, the senior side
TODAY:
Let’s get back on the winning list at home to Diamond
Creek this week.
GO STARS!
UNDER-19:
A disappointing result to start the season but let’s focus
on the positives.
We won one quarter of football and only went down by
three goals against good opposition.
If we work hard on the track and consistently play the
brand of football we played in the third
quarter the results will come. Goals: H. Smith 3, L.
Moroney 2; Best: J. McDonald, L. Moroney, Z. Hick, F.
Parker, T. Sheppard, A. Dao
SOCIAL SCENE:
It was great to see so many people back at the club
on Saturday night to kick off the season. Once again
Paul Lacey entertained us. Next up on May 10 after the
Panton Hill game is our 80s Cocktail Party. Dress up in
your favourite 80s cocktail frock and enjoy 80s party
hits, finger food and cocktails of the 80s. More details
to come.

MERNDA
Great start to season 2014! Two big wins, while the
under-19s had a good run for three quarters but ran out
of legs.
SENIORS: The thing that should be remembered here
is that we still need to learn to play 120 minutes of
football, even though we won all four quarters. There
were times in the second quarter where Panton Hill
looked like overrunning us but thankfully we fought
back and regained the ascendency. Smitty kicked
six first-half goals, Jai Robbo kicked five and a big
congratulations to DB, JB, Branners, Banno, Dale, Lemo
and AJ for making their Mernda debut - the latter two
in their senior debut. A 70-point win first up - we now
have the side who made a huuuuuge statement in
Round 1 - North Heidelberg.
RESERVES: The form we showed late last year was
very good and we’ve carried that into this year with a
111-point victory first up. Millsy kicked six goals, Joely
was everywhere and suffered leather poisoning and
there were contributors everywhere we looked.
NORTH HEIDELBERG
A fantastic way to start the year off with two great
games against Fitzroy Stars at the Kennel.
RESERVES:
After being knocked out of the finals last year by the Stars
there was plenty of incentive for the boys. Starting off
brilliantly under new coach Gary Cuttler we kicked the first
five goals of the game. Led by some familiar faces in Jamie,
Louis, and Casey, there was also some new faces with
Cal, Rami and Daniel all starting the year off very well. We
increased our lead at every break running out 65-pointt
winners with Cooma Riewoldt kicking five goals and Rami
getting 4 in his first game. Cal was named best.
SENIORS:
A minute silence was held before the senior game to
honour former player Bart Williams, who passed away
suddenly before Christmas. With seven new players in
the team and new coach Stephen Saddington in control
for the first time, it was always going to be interesting
to see how the boys gelled together. I don’t think even
Saddo would have guessed that we would come out
and kick the first five goals against last year’s runner’s up.

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
UNDER-19: Terrific effort for three quarters. Couldn’t
fault them. Unfortunately when you only have one man
on the bench you’re bound to run out of legs and that
was the case for us, as Panton Hill kicked 10 goals in the
final quarter, allowing them to take their first up victory.
Golledge and Stav were very good and there’s plenty to
like going forward - blokes like Sean (you could hear his
voice back home I’ve been told), Morgan, Geordi, Vito,
these blokes will be something good to watch this year.
TODAY: Big game, hey? 1st V 2nd (yeah, yeah, early
on) and we can’t wait. North was fantastic last week in
its demolition job of the Stars. Get down from 9:40am
when the 19s take on St Mary’s and let’s support each
other all day and make it three wins. Tonight after the
game will be a DJ night so get your dancing shoes on!!
SOCIAL EVENTS: May 17 – Bogan Bingo Night, June
14 – Op Shop Night, July 6 – Sportspersons Day, July 26
– Mr Mernda, Aug 9 – Trivia Night, Aug 23 – Farewell to
Schotters Rd, Sept 19 – Presentation Night
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Costa Mushrooms
At half time we led by 43 points, eventually winning by
84. Lachie kicked seven in his first game at Spuz and Jeff
were fantastic along with Longy, Patty, Jordy, and Soupie.
NETBALL:
NH 1 played the reigning premiers which was always
going to be a challenge, especially with some prematch withdraws. A huge thanks to Megan West,
Megan Berger and Bec Davis for filling in or moving
up from B grade at such late notice. The girls played
magnificently to win a nailbiter by one goal. NH 2 had
quite a few late exclusions and main goaler Lauren
Byrnes went down with an ankle injury in the first
minute. She returned in the second quarter and helped
the team to remain competitive. NH 3 played consistent
netball from start to finish and showed some great
team work to win. NH 4 thrashed Thomastown and I’m
excited for what their season will bring.
Baby News: Over the summer break we had a
number of new arrivals with Johnny & Chantelle
welcoming Nate, Trent & Cheree with Hunter, Dave &
Hollie with Paxton, Rudy & Toni with Parker, and Blake &
Danielle with Braxton.

EPPING
We welcome Epping Football Club Life Members today
as we play Panton Hill. All are welcome in the rooms to
help celebrate. Panton Hill’s last game here was their
Division 3 Grand Final success. Let’s send them home
with three losses today.
SENIORS: Not the start we were hoping for but we
showed good signs early and patches through the
game. Having five goals one-minute into the second
quarter, then to only kick five more for the rest of the
game was disappointing. We need to limit turnovers
as they cost us goals. On a positive, our young players
picked up the tempo of senior footy well against a side
that was a bit bigger than us. We must be mentally
stronger, play the whole quarter and the whole game.
This week we come up against Panton Hill who is also
looking to open its. 2014 account. Let’s keep them 0-2.
RESERVES: After a tough 2013, the boys showed that
they have learnt a lot from their Division 1 experience
coming away with the win. Ellis tried getting knocked
out again, but came back out, Trumpy equals Mr Reliable
PANTON HILL
Cracknell Reserve was in superb condition for our
first twilight game and the unveiling of the 2013
premiership flag.
SENIORS: Unfortunately a fast and strong Mernda
recorded a10-goal win. We started well but couldn’t get
goals whilst Mernda made the most of opportunities
and skipped to a four-goal lead by quarter time and
seven goals early in the second. We got our game
going and kicked six goals in a row, however, a lapse
in concentration cost us the next six goals and a big
deficit at half time. The remainder of the game was an
even contest but we couldn’t make any inroads and
succumbed to a significant loss. Newcomer Daniel
Fulton kicked three goals whilst Tyler Scarce was in
our best nd kicked three goals. Tristan Kreymborg was
dominant in the ruck and Reid Staples worked hard
through the centre along with fellow recruit Tait Forster.
RESERVES: Mernda always seems has a strong reserves
side, and this season is no exception. It was stalwarts
who held things us together, including Kane Gilmore,
Matt Sherwood, Daniel Pratt, Dave Varano and Matt

solid team effort led by Lucas, Juddy, Rosey and Azz. First

what we can do. Well done fellas. Let’s see a repeat today!
BLUES BLURB: Celebrity guest Woody Harrelson was

With a higher standard of football in Division 2, the
opportunity is there for those players pushing for senior
selection to show their wares.
UNDER-19: In our-90 year history there has not
been an under-19 side. It was with great pride and
achievement to finally field a team of youths – many
of whom previously played juniors for the Hills. The
first three quarters provided an even contest before we
broke the shackles in the last quarter and finished with
a comfortable win. Jonty Rushton was a standout and
finished with six goals. In a very even contribution, the
best also included Eldridge, Faulkner, Jerabek, Hodges
and Marshall.

Upcoming events include the Players social on May 3
and Presidents Lunch on May 10.
TWILIGHT: We’re pleased to host two more twilight
games in the early part of the season, against
Hurstbridge on April 26 and Diamond Creek on May
10. Senior games start at 5pm with reserves and 19s
beforehand.

Division 3 – Preview
THE TOP SPOT IS UP FOR GRABS
by Doug Long
Week one of NFL Division 3 action kicked off last
Saturday with some emphatic wins and also a thriller.
Despite losing some key players such as Josh Beare,
Michael Manley and Michael Khoury, Thomastown
sent notice that it will be a force to be reckoned
with under new coach Dean Sinclair, who previously
coached the club to the 2008 Division 2 premiership
prior to a stint at Lalor.
Last week Jacob Osei-Duro kicked six goals for the
Bears in a best on ground performance in their
109-point win over former coach George Lattouf’s
Parkside at Main Street Reserve – that despite trailing
at quarter time.
Highly-fancied Reservoir travelled to Whatmough
Park for an easy win over St Mary’s. The Mustangs’
team featured a host of new recruits, including Daniel
Couwenberg – who was among the best.
Expectations are high at the Mustangs this year and the
team looks to have improved on their 2013, when they
bowed out in the first semi-final after being some hope
of grabbing the double chance late in the season.
The best match of the round was between 2013
runner-up Watsonia and recently demoted South
Morang, who were coming back from Division 2. The
Saints went in as underdogs, having lost star players
Tom Walliss, Brody Ricardi, Tony Hogg and influential
playing-coach Lochie Dornauf.
They led narrowly at every change at Mill Park Lakes
Reserve, but found themselves behind in the final
term, before a late Mark Roumanous goal – in his first
game for the club – gave the Saints a six-point win.
New coach Damian Zanic would have liked the work
of Greenvale recruit Ben Anderson, who was a key
player in the Saints’ victory.
Round 2 action sees St Mary’s travel to Pitcher Park
to take on Parkside. It will be a chance for one side to
notch its first win after both had disappointing results
in the opening round.
With new Burra coach Con Borg stating finals as a
goal, a win against the Devils would be a step in that
direction. The Burra were victorious in their last travel
to the ground – winning by eight points in the last
home and away game of 2013.

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Heidelberg West had the bye first up, and begins its
year hosting South Morang. The Lions, down from
Division 2 in 2013, will be desperate to get a win
on the board to establish themselves as a Division
3 contender. First-season coach Craig Lambert is
aiming for finals in 2014 after the young Lions had a
disappointing year in second division.
Although the Hawks took out the wooden spoon in
2013 with just the one win, they will be hoping for
better this year. Ray Walker moves from coaching the
Macleod under-19s to become Derek Shaw’s assistant
coach. Shaw says that training has been pretty good
and the team was competitive in all its three practice
matches. He sees a fair bit of talent in the young guys
at the club.
The match of the day is Watsonia and Thomastown
at A.K Lines Reserve. These teams spent most of
the 2013 season vying for the double chance, which
Watsonia finally clinched with a narrow win over
Parkside in Round 18.
On the same day, Thomastown only managed a
draw against St Mary’s. They eventually met in the
preliminary final, when the Saints came from more
than four goals down to run away with the game. In
fact, the Saints prevailed in every encounter against
the Bears last season.
The winner of this contest will be on top of the
ladder, as last week’s other winner, Reservoir,
has a bye and will not play again until it meets
Thomastown a week after Easter. Therefore, for
the winner of this clash a two-week stint atop the
Division 3 ladder awaits.

Division 3
PARKSIDE
The start of the season has unfortunately produced a
couple of hard losses for the Devils.
RESERVES:
The ressies, under new coach Abe Kyreizis, struggled for
most of the match against a very strong thomastown
outfit despite the best off efforts from all the boys
involved. Aaron “It’s Eastlakes” Eastlake and Rhys “Call
me Raz” Stephens produced sterling efforts all game,
with the later even bobbing up for a late hard-earned
goal. Other notable contributors included were
Screecher and Ty who never stopped with their efforts.
SENIORS:
The seniors started their match off very well, looking
all the goods against a tough Thomastown outfit and
went into the quarter time break with a slender lead.
However, it wasn’t to be our day as Thomastown turned
up the intensity while our efforts went lacking. To make
matters worse we lost both Darren Gresham and our
new gun Jack Philpott, who had been having a blinder
in his first game for the club, to match-ending injuries.
ST MARY’S
The season could have kicked off a lot better than it
did but it’s early doors yet and it shows there is plenty
of room for improvement. Leading the way however, as
usual, were our under-19s.
LUNCHEON: All parents of under-19 players, put Round
3 v Diamond Creek in your diaries for the U/19s Players
& Parents Welcome Luncheon held up in the Social
Rooms immediately following their game. This is a free
event and watch for more info coming over the next
week or two.
UNDER-19: Started the year in good form with a sound
win over South Morang. A much harder game than the
scoreboard suggests however an 85-point win was well
deserved. We welcomed Ben Joyce as the new coach
for 2014 and he kicked off his coaching career in perfect
form. Good luck to all the boys and Benny for 2014.
Today the boys will need to dig deep as they face up
against Mernda.
NETBALL: We’re still looking for a coach for 2014 so
if anyone out there wants to take over two reining
premiership sides from 2013, as well as join an
awesome club, please contact us ASAP. Last week both
46

On the upside, there were some solid contributions
individually from the likes of Captain Squizz who
was everywhere, Matt Ross who was ever-reliable in
defence despite being under constant pressure, as well
as new boys Clint and Handsy who showed the coaches
that they’re definitely of senior material.
THIS WEEK:
We return home to Pitcher Park to host a St Mary’s
outfit who will also be stinging after a hard loss to
Reservoir. The contests between the two sides are
always very hard-fought and tend to bring out the
best of each other. Last year even produced what was
the best effort seen by a Parkside reserves side in a
few years as they ran rampant over the Kookaburras
to produce a 10-goal win. Get behind both our sides
today as we strive for our first wins of the year.
SOCIAL:
Denim Night is TONIGHT!!! It’s guaranteed to be a
cracker night with drinks so cheap we’re practically
forcing them down your throat. So dress up in as much
denim of the blue, black, burgundy or even tangerine
variety and head along to Pitcher Park tonight!
teams struggled after a difficult pre-season but let’s
hope last night we were able to reverse the tables.
RESERVES: Were pretty flat last week putting in a very
ordinary performance. On that basis we know there is
only one way to go from here. If you think Carry gave
you a bake last week the boys will want to improve
today against Parkside if you don’t want to see any
more spittle coming out of his gob!
SENIORS: Disappointing not to kick off the ledger
positively for new coach Borgy but there were plenty
of healthy signs just the same. Turnovers were costly
but with scoring shots being 27 to 21 we needed to be
more. Today we catch up with the Devils at Pitcher Park
for what we know will be another hard test.
SOCIAL NEWS: Lots of enthusiastic planning going
on this year with Robbo and Matty again holding the
reins. See either one if you want to be part of the subcommittee. Don’t forget the first social night is May 10.

HEIDELBERG WEST
Welcome to 2014. After months of pre season training
the real stuff is finally here. The new faces have fitted
in seamlessly and have provided lots energy on the
training track.
The coaches have been buoyed by our practice match
form against high quality outfits, with continued
improvement from our young list exciting times are
ahead for the Hawks.
TODAY: We welcome South Morang Football Club back
to Heidelberg Park for the first time since 2011. To our
boys, let’s make sure it’s not an enjoyable return for the
Lions and let’s notch up our first victory in 2014. Go
Hawks!
SPONSORS: We wish to thank our sponsors who have
committed to sponsoring our club in season 2014. Your
generous support is greatly appreciated and it goes a
long way to putting our great club on the park each
season. This season we welcome a new major sponsor
SOUTH MORANG
Today we look forward to a great day at Heidelberg
West for the seniors and reserves, while the under-19s
host Diamond Creek at Southy
SENIORS:
Well how does that old saying go? Bad kicking is bad
football. We showed we are clearly competitive in
Division 3 this year but can’t afford to start slow and
kick like that and expect to win. A great first up game
for all our new players though and it was great to see a
strong South Morang crowd in attendance.
RESERVES:
Ditto for the reserves, but you found a way to win. For
the guys who missed out, keep training and you will
find your way into this side. For the guys who did play,
there will be heaps of pressure this year to maintain
your place in the side so get behind Gary and ensure
we are successful.
UNDER-19:
Went down to a very well drilled team and last year’s
Division 2 runner-up. We showed glimpses of the way
we can play but training is the key here. Get to training
and we will be a good team. It’s very simple boys.

compulsory for all players to seek out a player sponsor
for themselves. There a 3 sponsorship packages

Mick Missen or Tom Bennett for all the details.
VALE DAVE IACCOPINO: Shortly after the conclusion
of last season a young family and our football club lost
a great man and father. Dave Iaccopino coached our
reserves for one season but he touched so many lives in a
short time. The Heidelberg West Football Club continues
to offer its condolences to the Iaccopino family.

A great day out at South Morang last Saturday with
both teams involved in thrilling encounters, but with
different levels of success.
SENIORS:
The boys started well, obviously still feeling the buzz
from the triple strength Gatorade at training during
the week. However, the Lions bounced back in the
second quarter. After numerous bets on which Bennett
would get injured first this season, those who backed
Jezza lined up to collect as he sustained a scary neck
injury. The lads, reduced to one on the bench ended up
getting the chocolates by a kick.
RESERVES:
We decided to give the opposition a 32-point head
start before hitting the scoreboard. After quarter time
it was the Josh Clancy Show as the boys clawed their
way back. After a courageous comeback they ended up
falling short by five points. Hoping for a better start this
week lads!!
NETBALL:
The season started on a high with all three teams
winning their opening round. Black Team defeated
Laurimer 31-15, Red Team defeated Greensborough
27-11 and White Team beat Lalor 21-14. Get down next
Friday to support the girls!
AROUND THE CLUB:
Matt Crawford snuck in to Coburg Districts two weeks
ago and hired Chicken Nixon to negotiate his contract.
He is now the highest paid player at the club and owns
a small helipad atop of the clubhouse.
THIS WEEK:
We welcome to Thomastown this week. Hopefully
it will be an entertaining game between last year’s
preliminary finalists.
BY THE NUMBERS:

- Times Hinsey has been on time:

THOMASTOWN
Season 2014 kicked off at our home ground against
Parkside with two great wins.
SENIORS:
We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year
with a solid victory. However, there are still a number of
points to improve upon which we discussed during the
course of the game. Despite this, it was great to get a
positive result from our first competitive game. Our first
big test for the year now awaits.
RESERVES:
A fantastic way to start 2014, with a resounding victory.
The only disappointing aspect to the game was our
inability to play four complete quarters, with the
second quarter a particular disappointment. Still, that
is probably nitpicking. We shouldn’t need any extra
motivation this week then to take on last year’s premier!
NETBALL:
A slight correction to last week’s club notes – the
netballers now have 4 sides in the competition,
which is a fantastic achievement for the club. With so
many sides to cheer on, it will be great to see all our
50
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
supporters get behind the teams every Friday night.
JUNIORS:
Our under 11s and under 16s kicked off the season
in style last week with wins. At the other end of the
spectrum, Auskick kicked off at the club on Friday night
and will continue every Friday at 5.15pm. This week our
Under 9s begin their year, our under-11s play Panton
Hill away at 10am and under-16s play South Morang
away at 1pm.
AROUND THE LAIR:
Well done to Jazmyn Cooper and Jen Hughes on
registering their 50th game for the club last Friday.
We look forward to them continuing to be a big part of
the club for years to come. A resounding effort by the
reserves last week to restrict Parkside to just one goal.
Any guesses as to who gave away that one goal? I won’t
dob the person in here in this forum - but I will say it
in “Italian” if I get asked. How pleased was Joe Colaci
to get a few wins last week? In his own words he was
pleased to be a part of “too” wins. “Two” bad he wasn’t
pleased enough to speak proper English.

STARS ECLIPSE LAKESIDE IN THRILLER
by Lauren Bordin
It was a close opening match of the Northern Netball
League Section 1 season which resulted in last year’s grand
final runner-up Lakeside losing to Fitzroy Stars 34-38.
Early on in the first quarter it looked as if Fitzroy would
be facing defeat with Lakeside’s quick movement of
the ball down the court, as well as sturdy defence from
Hannah Bora and Jessica Elder, keeping the Stars from
registering a goal until the middle of the quarter.
However Fitzroy’s ball delivery into its shooters
improved in the second half of the quarter and it was
able to even up the scoreboard by the end the term.
Fitzroy carried this momentum into the second quarter
and strong defensive pressure from Jessica Bamblett
and Merle Hall meant Lakeside was unable to score a
goal until the six-minute mark of the quarter.
Fitzroy goal attack, Sophie Atkinson also began to
show her best and fairest winning form in this quarter,
helping her side to a 13-goal quarter and a 7-goal lead
at the half-time break.
The Stars continued their strong defence in Lakeside’s
goal third, with their pressure forcing Lakeside’s attack
NORTH CAUSE BOILOVER
North Heidelberg upset last year’s Section 1 premier
Diamond Creek by one goal, winning 41-40 in an
enthralling Round 1 clash.
North Heidelberg started the match strong and only
faltered slightly in the last quarter of the game allowing
Diamond Creek to sneak up and close the score gap.
Accuracy was a large factor in ensuring North
Heidelberg’s victory. North Heidelberg’s Megan West
didn’t miss a shot on goal until halfway through the
second quarter, helping to ensure her side had a lead of
nine at half-time.
The swop of Elle McDonald from centre to goal defence
for the third quarter had an immediate positive impact
for Diamond Creek.
McDonald and goal keeper Lynsey Cook teamed up
well together to apply pressure on their opposition and
force turnovers.
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
to continually feed the ball outside the circle.
However, the difficulty to get the ball into its shooters
didn’t stop Lakeside from forcing it into the circle and
it was able to reduce the deficit to two goals going into
the final quarter.
Elder continued her dominant game in goal defence,
intercepting Fitzroy’s first centre pass of the quarter in a
crucial play leading to a goal for her side.
After another goal to Lakeside shooter Rebecca Lally
the scores were level and it looked as if Lakeside could
record a win after finishing the game off with the same
intensity of their first quarter.
However, despite Lakeside’s persistence and
domination of possession it remained three goals
behind at the halfway mark of the final quarter.
With two minutes to go, Lakeside still had a slim chance
to win following a turnover in Fitzroy’s attacking third.
However, this opportunity was wasted as the ball went
out of court in Lakeside’s attacking third in the same
play. This resulted in the ball returning to the Stars goal
circle, allowing Atkinson to shoot a goal to seal the
match.
Their solid defensive effort helped slow down the
stream of goals by North Heidelberg dramatically.
This kept North Heidelberg to 11 second-half goals, in
contrast to the 30 it scored in the first half.
Inaccurate passes and fumbles affected both teams at
times, with hard fought intercepts not being rewarded
as the ball again turned over to the opposition side.
However these mistakes were most prevalent for
Diamond Creek as it missed opportunities for goals due
to overthrows and poor passes to shooters.
Although Diamond Creek fought hard to reduce the
deficit, North Heidelberg was able to keep possession
in the final minute as it worked the ball around its
attacking third. While a goal was not scored from these
efforts, the play ran the clock down to safeguard its
slim lead.
