One
conversation
topic that is
invariably
raised in weekly
discussions with
club members is
that of equalisation. “Has the league
considered a salary cap or points
system?” or “is the league considering
any form of restrictions on payments,
recruitment or operations?”
The quick answer is yes and no.
No matter what level of football
(AFL, VFL, local, amateur or country),
inequality exists. Some clubs have
strong a supporter base which
allows for significant sponsorship
and match day revenues. Others
have sound investments which
provide annual contributions
and some have strong networks
which may include benefactors or
employment opportunities.
Many proposals have been put
forward and discussed at local
level, attempting to provide a
more level playing field for clubs
and attempting to nullify the
dominance of a select few. The
majority, if not all, have failed to
clearly link the provisions imposed
with any equalisation outcome.
To my knowledge, there is only one
league that has implemented a
‘points system’ to playing lists and
the results thus far seem far from
encouraging. Since inception in
2010, in the three divisions within
this league, two have had the same
premier each year and in the other,
one team has won in two of the
three years. As well, the average
winning margins of these divisions
in 2012 were worse than any of the
metropolitan competitions – hardly
reflective of any intended outcomes.
Sure, this may take time to evolve
and the football industry needs
THE NORTHERNER
proactive leagues to trial such
initiatives to ascertain their worth.
However, given inequality will
always be an issue (compare
Collingwood and North Melbourne),
current practices including
promotion and relegation have
far more impact on competitive
balance and club success.
Not everyone can win a Division 1
title but a premiership at any level
should be something to be coveted
and cherished. In our Division 1
competition, 7 of the 10 clubs have
won a senior premiership in the
past 4 years (five within the past
three years). The exceptions are
Greensborough (2006), Eltham
(2002) and Montmorency (1979).
In Division 2, all clubs have won a
senior premiership within the past
10 years (with the exception of
Fitzroy Stars who started in 2008)
and in Division 3, only two clubs
are yet to claim a title and two have
won in the past four years.
As you can see, very few clubs have
endured long periods without success
and those that have, have certainly
had their opportunities along the
way. The NFL is one of the most
competitively balanced competitions
in community football and in 2012,
our Division 1 had the lowest average
winning margin of all leagues in
Victoria. This will not always be the
case and all clubs will go through
periods of highs and lows.
What we must ensure is that clubs
maintain a responsible position with
regards to player payments, continue
to build on relationships with their
junior affiliates and be protective
of the culture of their clubs. If
those principles are maintained,
equalisation will occur without the
need for legislative interference.

Round 4 – Match Reports
MAGPIES SWOOP ON WOUNDED TIGERS
by Samuel Zito
Montmorency shot to the top of the Division 1
ladder with a 71-point thrashing of Heidelberg at
Montmorency Park in Round 4.
Despite trailing by 19 points at the first change, the
Magpies piled on 18 of the game’s last 22 goals to
record a 20.13 (133) to 9.8 (62) victory.
With stars Blair Harvey, Jess Sinclair, Michael Finn,
Dale Nolan and Josh Houlihan all watching from
the sidelines – the Tigers were powerless against
Montmorency’s onslaught in the final three terms.
Montmorency piled on 10 consecutive goals from
midway through the second term until late in the third
as it turned a 19-point deficit into a 42-point lead.
Remarkably, Heidelberg did not register a score during
this period, until Rhys Healey converted from a free
kick right on three-quarter time to make for a 36-point
margin at the last change.
With their opponents already on the ropes, the Magpies
were ruthless in the final term – dishing out the
knockout blow in the opening five minutes of the term.
Tiger Joel Harris kicked the first goal of the final term
to bring the deficit back to 30 points before Patrick
Fitzgerald (four goals) responded with two goals in the
next two minutes.
Resulting goals to Ryan Jackson, Rowan Nayna and
Luke Jackson blew the Magpies’ buffer out to 60 points
midway through the term. The Magpies went on to
kick seven goals in the final quarter as they eventually
claimed a percentage-boosting win.
Incredibly, Heidelberg led for the entire first half with
Montmorency only taking the lead when Fitzgerald
kicked truly after the half-time siren to give the home
side a one-point advantage at the main break.
The Tigers got off to a flying start when Mark Favrin
crumbed beautifully off a pack and kicked truly in the
opening minute of the game – a goal synonymous of
his career in the yellow and black jumper.
The lead was doubled just moments later when Jamie
Allan was left vacant outside of a forward stoppage and
converted from 40m out.
Despite Montmorency having the best of the next
10 minutes it could make no genuine inroads on the
scoreboard.

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Heidelberg’s midfield pressure didn’t allow the Magpies
any quick movement forward which enabled Jason
Kennedy to peel off in defence and cut off many
Montmorency forays forward.
Kennedy was instrumental in the first half, taking many
marks inside defensive 50m and constantly giving his
fellow defenders a helping hand against big forwards
Fitzgerald and Ryan Willits.
However as the Magpies midfield began to get on top
midway through the second quarter, the complex of
the game changed completely.
Daniel Keenan and Ryan Jackson were in the thick of
everything through the middle of the ground and their
quicker ball movement forward provided Fitzgerald
and Ben Walton (four goals) one-on-one opportunities
against their Heidelberg defenders.
Walton booted three goals in the third quarter alone
as his contested marking became a feature of the game.
Fitzgerald also came to the party. He took a massive
leaping mark in the third term which helped set up a
Walton goal, before taking a handful of big grabs in the
final quarter as he hit the scoreboard heavily.
Yet again the Magpies defence was resolute, keeping
the Tigers to nine goals for the day and just four majors
after the opening quarter.
Craig Flint and Shane Tennant intercepted many
Heidelberg forward movements and offered creativity
and rebounded out of the back half throughout the
final three quarters.
Michael Fitz-Gerald and Daniel Coghill did the job on
the Tiger talls – with Brad Miller, Chaz Sargeant and
Jordan Treloar kept to just one goal between them.
Unfortunately Treloar left the field early with what
appeared an ankle injury and may add to Heidelberg’s
already extensive injury list.
Montmorency faces another top of the table clash in
Round 5 when it plays host to second-placed Bundoora,
while Heidelberg will look to rebound when it takes on
ninth-placed West Preston-Lakeside at Warringal Park.
Final score: Montmorency 20.13 (133) def
Heidelberg 9.8 (62)

Round 4 – Match Reports
DOGS CLIP EAGLES’ WINGS
by Lachlan Dyson
Whittlesea coach Pete Bugden believes some of his
team are guilty of not working hard enough after a Shane
Harvey-led North Heidelberg ran all over Whittlesea on a
breezy day at the United Showgrounds on Saturday.
The Eagles coach borrowed the words of Collingwood
vice-captain Scott Pendlebury, accusing some of his
players of ‘cheating’ in the 15.6 (96) to 18.10 (118) loss.
“There are too many blokes cheating – running forward
and not running back,” Bugden said
“When it comes down to it, we lost our one-on-one
contests the whole day, and if you don’t win them, you
don’t win the game.”
It was a close encounter early on as the ball was held
in the middle of the ground for the majority of the
first quarter.
Eagles ruckman Jeremy Page received a hit in a marking
contest and although Page attempted to return after
half-time, he missed the majority of the game in an
early blow for the Eagles.
With solid work from the likes of Jarrod King and Blake
Holmes in the midfield, North Heidelberg went into
quarter time with an eight-point lead with Harvey
already finding plenty of the footy and causing
headaches for the Eagles.
At quarter time, Bugden called for “controlled
aggression” at the footy and the Eagles responded in
the second quarter, kicking the first four goals of the
second quarter to turn an eight-point deficit into a
16-point lead midway through the second quarter.
However, the second half of the quarter saw North
Heidelberg respond to the Eagles onslaught with Harvey
starting the comeback with a goal on the run. That was
followed by goals from Leigh Gilbert and a kick off the
ground by Holmes to put the Bulldogs back in front.
6
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
A 100-metre penalty to Roy Dyson which saw Holmes
red-carded for abusive language put the Eagles back in
the lead for only a minute, with John Green snapping
truly and Daniel Bramich pushing North’s lead to nine
points at half-time with a good set shot goal.
With a solid wind at its back and an unmatched
intensity for the footy, North Heidelberg extended its
lead in the second half as it began to win the stoppages
and run into open spaces.
Despite Eagles co-captains Dyson and Garrett Heenan
toiling hard in the midfield, the likes of Harvey and King
were seemingly unstoppable for the Bulldogs.
Goals from Harvey, Stephen Saddington and Jake
Brown pushed the lead out to 24 points.
Some magic from Lucas Hobbs saw Paul Harrison bring
it back to 18 points before Harvey once again showed
his freakish ability with a snap from 45 metres making it
all too hard for the Eagles.
Green put the next nail in the coffin with a set shot
goal to put the margin out to five goals at three
quarter time.
After an intense opening 10 minutes of footy in the
final quarter, the sting went out of the game as Harvey
put his fifth goal on the board and extended the lead
to 40 points.
As the game slowed down, late goals to Glenn Poorter,
Brodric Gray and a big 50-metre bomb from the
boundary from Harrison brought the margin back to
22-points.
Whittlesea will be looking to re-group when it hosts
ladder-leader Diamond Creek in the Round 5 NFL Match
of the Day while North Heidelberg travels to Lalor to
take on one of its greatest rivals.

Round 4 – Match Reports
STARS OVERCOME DEMONS, INACCURACY
by Michael Thompson
Fitzroy Stars recorded a commanding victory over Mernda
at Preston City Oval on Saturday afternoon, kicking away in
the second half to record a 31-point victory.
Patrick Davis was the focal point up forward for the
Stars in the 13.24 (102) to 10.11 (71) victory, kicking
five goals and covering the loss of fellow key forward
Samuel Autio before the game.
The Stars were keen to get off to a strong start
following their poor first quarter against North
Heidelberg last week, and quickly asserted their
dominance kicking with a strong breeze.
Jake McCauley and Kaelun Brown took control and
allowed as much ball as possible into the forward 50m,
where Davis was always a threat.
However, poor kicking in front of goal also became a
factor, and the mood around the Stars’ camp didn’t
improve as Mernda took all of ifs opportunities. Despite
having 12 scoring shots to three, Fitzroy Stars led by
nine points at the first change – 3.9 (27) to 3.0 (18).
The second quarter was played on Mernda’s terms and the
scoreboard was impacted as a result. The Demons kicked
three of the first four goals in the second quarter to briefly
hit the front, despite having fewer scoring shots.
BOROUGH JUMP INSIDE TOP FIVE
by Liam O’Callaghan
A devastating opening three quarters led
Greensborough to a 53-point victory over West PrestonLakeside at War Memorial Park in Round 4.
The game was over at three quarter time with
Greensborough kicking 17 goals to six, which included
four of captain Tim Bongetti’s five goals and five to
youngster Rhys Boyden.
The Borough had a lapse in concentration in the final
quarter but it was not enough to prevent a solid victory,
with the final scoreline 18.8 (116) to 9.9 (63).
In one of the most clinical displays seen this year,
Greensborough burst out of the blocks with plenty of run
and overlap leaving West Preston-Lakeside standing still.
A play on at all costs approach allowed the ball to be
moved quickly into the forward line, giving the likes of
David Berryman, playing as a high half forward, was
impacting plenty of contests and Rohan Davies started
to take control of the midfield. However, a late goal to
Fitzroy Stars levelled the scores at half time.
Fitzroy Stars needed to get off to a strong start with
the breeze in the third quarter, and kicked the first
three goals of the term. Once again, though, inaccuracy
threatened to allow Mernda back in, especially when
the Demons responded with two goals to reduce the
margin to 12 points midway through the third quarter.
However, the Demons made critical errors coming out
of defence, allowing wave after wave of attack for the
Stars, which favoured Davis and gave the home side a
17-point buffer at the last change.
Mernda coach Brett Wilson called for more from his
midfielders, but it was to no avail as Fitzroy completely
dominated the last quarter, kicking the first four goals
to extend the margin to 43 points.
Stars captain Lionel Proctor declared the win an
important one for the club as it moved into fifth place
on the ladder, with just percentage keeping his club
outside the top four.
“We needed the win today to rebound after last week’s
loss to North Heidelberg, so we can catch back up to
the pack,” Proctor said.
Final scores: Fitzroy Stars 13.24 (102) def Mernda

Bongetti and Boyden plenty of opportunities.
While its plays developed with run and overlap,
the genesis of Greensborough’s attacks was its
pressure. Both physical tackles and implied pressure
created many turnovers which resulted in scoring
opportunities.
One of the leaders of this style of play was Josh Griffiths.
Griffiths was constantly receiving handballs and driving
the ball forward and he even managed a goal himself.
He was supported in the midfield by Matthew Hyde
and Ricky Mullins.
As for West Preston-Lakeside, there was little to celebrate
on a tough day. Anthony Rocca managed five goals
from limited opportunities, while Pece Micevski resisted
the Greensborough onslaught by winning plenty of
contested football and distributing it to his teammates.

Round 4 – Match Reports
ROOS REGISTER FIRST WIN
by Ben Pascuzzi
Macleod claimed its first win of the 2013 season,
defeating Lower Plenty in a very scrappy contest at De
Winton Park on Saturday afternoon.
It was a match riddled by skill errors but Macleod kicked
clear after a goalless opening term to win 11.15 (81) to
5.10 (40).
Languishing in the lower reaches of the ladder, both
teams were desperate for the four points but Macleod
was the hungrier outfit and lifted itself from tenth to
sixth on the table following the victory.
The first quarter was an akin to an under-9s scoreboard
scenario. Macleod scored five behinds to lead Lower
Plenty’s three behinds. Both sides were using the ball
well through the wings and centre but couldn’t finish it
off up forward.
Finally, in the fifth minute of the second term, Mathew
Pow kicked the first goal of the match for Macleod after
Lower Plenty dominated early play. This started an
avalanche of goals for Macleod who recorded the next
four, including a long bomb from outside 50m by Justin
White.
Brad Leggett was the standout for Macleod in defence,
standing tall against the Bears’ forwards. Kane Shaw
was also dominant in the back half for Macleod racking
up possessions and clearing the ball when needed.
BOROUGH JUMP INSIDE TOP FIVE (continued)
Much of the run that the Roosters are known for was
missing, even with the likes of James Rizzolio and Luke
McKenna attempting to turn things around by breaking
lines. The pressure applied by Greensborough simply
suffocated West Preston-Lakeside.
Greensborough coach Robert Hyde stressed the
importance of a good start to each quarter, and even
after the opening quarter blitz he reminded his players
that the first goal of each quarter was important to
keep the Roosters at a safe distance.
He proved to be right as Greensborough extended
its lead by at least three goals in the second and third
quarters after kicking the first goals of each term.
However, the Borough could not keep their intensity up
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
By half-time, Lower Plenty had registered a lousy eight
behinds to trail Macleod by 31 points.
It was an intriguing ruck dual between Chris Long for
Macleod and Benjamin Buller for the Bears. Both of
them were won plenty of taps with the honours shared
during the first half. For Macleod, Hamish Paynter was a
force in the midfield, getting plenty of goal assists and
doing all the little one percenters.
After the break, the Kangaroos burst out of the blocks
with the first four goals of the the quarter to assume a
54-point lead midway through the third term. But after
two and a half quarters, Lower Plenty finally kicked
truly through Reece Geary after a quick switch from
the backline.
The Bears kicked the next two majors and headed
into the final quarter trailing by 37 points. They were
starting to get more of the football but Macleod was
just too skilled for them to have a big impact.
The final term was again low scoring with both teams
kicking only one goal. However, it was of no concern to
Macleod who recorded its first win under Garry Ramsay
, coincidentally against his former side who he led to
the 2011 Division 2 premiership.
Macleod now takes on Epping at home as it looks to
make it two wins on the trot, whilst Lower Plenty makes
the short trip to Greensborough.
Final score: Macleod 11.15 (81) def Lower Plenty
5.10 (40)
for the whole game as the Roosters grabbed the first
goal of the final quarter.
While this did begin a quarter in which they outscored
their opponents it was too little too late for the now
ninth-placed Roosters.
Final score: Greensborough 18.8 (116) def West
Preston-Lakeside 9.9 (63)

PANTON HILL V RESERVOIR
First plays second in all three NFL senior competitions this
weekend and in Division 3 the top of the table clash sees
Panton Hill take on Reservoir at Yarrambat Memorial Park.
The Redbacks top the Division 3 table with three wins
from their opening four games – the three wins coming
by an average margin of 72 points.
Reservoir has also recorded three wins this season, but
unlike Panton Hill, have not lost a game in 2013. The
Mustangs were victorious in each of the opening three
rounds before having a bye last weekend.
Panton Hill has been in ruthless form since suffering a
shock four-point loss to Parkside in Round 1. The Redbacks
have since beaten St Mary’s by 49 points, fourth-placed
Watsonia by 64 and cellar-dweller Heidelberg West by 104
to boost its percentage to a whopping 186.59.
Last season’s runner-up is playing an exciting, attacking
brand of football and have scored an average of 118 points
a game during their three-game winning run, despite last
year’s leading goal scorer, Joffa Byron, moving to defence.
However, it is the Redbacks plethora of goal kickers and
unpredictability moving forward which has proved their
greatest strength in the opening month of the season.
First-choice ruckman Tristan Kreymborg has led the way
with nine goals, however he has had plenty of support.
Ryan Graham booted five in last weekend’s win over
Heidelberg West, while Ben Finnin booted four in the
Round 2 win at St Mary’s.
In fact, so good has the Redbacks’ spread been that 11
PANTON HILL
individual players got on the scoreboard in the Round 3
win over Watsonia.
Recruit Jarrod McGough has been in ripping touch in
his first season in red and black and has been named
in the best in all four matches – including two best on
ground performances.
Reservoir will be refreshed by last weekend’s bye and had
been in good, but not great, form prior to the week off.
Despite winning all three matches this season, the
Mustangs have had to rely on late surges to get over
each of St Mary’s, Watsonia and Heidelberg West –
trailing both the Burras and Hawks early in the last term.
Ashley Flavel has been unstoppable in the opening rounds
– booting 18 goals to top the goal kicking after a month.
He booted five final quarter goals against Watsonia in
Round 2 to single-handedly repel the Saints’ fightback
and also booted five goals in his team’s most recent clash
with Panton Hill – that being the 2012 preliminary final.
Despite Flavel’s dominance up forward, it has been
Reservoir’s staunch defence which has proved its best
feature this year.
The Mustangs have conceded just 176 points in three
games this season at an average of just 59 points at
game. Heidelberg West’s score of 69 was the most the
Mustangs have leaked this season – a truly remarkable
defensive effort.
If Reservoir’s backline can again hold out against
Panton Hill’s powerful attacking flair on Saturday, the
Mustangs will take a huge step forward in their quest
for a double chance in September.

Division 1 – Summary
After trouncing Heidelberg in last week’s NFL
Match of the Day, Montmorency remains the only
unbeaten side in the top flight. However, the
Magpies will face a stern test to keep their winning
streak running when they host 2011 premier
Bundoora this weekend.
Trailing by 19 points at the first break, the Magpies hit
a rich vein of form in the final three quarters against
the Tigers – pilling on 18 goals to Heidelberg’s four to
record a 71-point win.
Defenders Shane Tennant and Craig Flint continued
their early season hot form, while unheralded tall
Michael Fitz-Gerald completely shut Brad Miller out
of the game – the former AFL forward kept goalless
in the drubbing.
Bundoora bounced back from its Round 3 loss
to Northcote Park with a more than comfortable
34-point win over Eltham at Yulong Reserve. Brayden
Shaw was superb, while Cameron Cloke allayed any
injury concerns by kicking four goals – the most of
any player on the field.
It sets up a show-stopping encounter at Montmorency
Park this weekend with the winner to assume top place
on the Division 1 ladder. A win would be a huge fillip for
Montmorency who would keep its one-game buffer at
the top of the table having faced a number of top-three
hopefuls, while Bundoora is in need of a victory against
a genuine premiership contender.
Heidelberg will be looking to bounce back quickly
when it hosts old foe West Preston-Lakeside at
Warringal Park. The Tigers were without seven of their
best last weekend but will still be furious with the
manner of their defeat. Jamie Allan still found plenty
of the football in defeat, while Jarryd Smith and Josh
Iezzi put in for four quarters.
The Roosters were equally well beaten at
Greensborough in Round 4, losing by 53 points
after trailing by as much as 67 at three-quarter time.
Anthony Rocca still managed to boot five goals from
limited opportunities, while Pece Micevski and Luke
McKenna fought hard against the tide.
Recent encounters between the Tigers and Roosters
have been extremely tight – with a draw the result
of the duo’s last match at Warringal Park, however
Heidelberg will certainly be highly fancied this weekend.

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Greensborough hosts Lower Plenty at War Memorial
Park with the Boro looking for a third successive home
win to commence the 2013 season. Robert Hyde’s
side finds itself back inside the top five following last
weekend’s big win over West Preston-Lakeside, where
tall forwards Tim Bongetti and Rhys Boyden both
snagged five majors.
Lower Plenty didn’t fire a shot in its loss to Macleod at
De Winton Park and will be looking for a more spirited
showing this weekend. The Bears were kept goalless
by the Kangaroos in the first half, with the promising
performances of youngsters Tom Keys and Rory
Kavanagh the bright light on an otherwise forgettable
afternoon.
Macleod will be on the hunt for consecutive wins when
it hosts bottom-placed Epping. Strangely enough, the
Roos have gone from wooden-spoon contenders to
finals aspirants in a week – jumping from tenth to sixth
on the ladder following last weekend’s 41-point win.
Defenders Brad Leggett and Kane Shaw were
exceptional down back, while ruckman Chris Long
continued his impressive start to the 2013 season. It
was a busy day for Long who was up at the crack of
dawn to collect close friend and Darwin-based player
Lincoln Withers from the airport. The Roos are hopeful
of having 38-year-old Withers feature in a number of
other games this season.
Epping was slow out of the gates against Northcote
Park last weekend, but did well to fight the game out
in its entirety. The Blues looked like being blown away
when they trailed the reigning premiers by 62 points
at the last change but managed to close the gap to 48
points by the final bell.
The Cougars head into this weekend’s home clash
against Eltham with a three-game winning streak and
will be fancied to make it four on the trot leading into
the Neale Carroll Cup against Greensborough next
week. Midfielders Daniel Ledda, Nick Carter and Doug
Morris were all amongst the best at Epping, as was
Harley Short in his second senior game.
Struggling with injuries to a host of its key players,
Eltham fell to a third loss for the year last weekend. The
Panthers are in the middle of a rough draw with games
against last year’s top four in succession, before their
draw opens up from Round 7.

NORTHCOTE PARK
Last week we travelled to Epping, a ground we have
not been to for some years.
The ground was in magnificent condition and with
new change rooms the facilities were magnificent. We
also caught up with old friends from years gone past.
Unfortunately the Epping under-19s could not field a
side so our boys had a rest this week. It was good to see
a lot of the under-19s there supporting the reserves
and seniors.
RESERVES: The reserves had a good win over Epping,
winning by 98 points. Kane Maghamez kicked five
goals and Kane Slater booted three, while a few of the
old fellow were off the ground early with minor injuries.
The better players on the day were Wade, the two
Kanes, Spud and Gus. Gary Ring went down pretty hard
on the final siren with his head colliding with the turf.
Let’s hope all is well. Well done boys.
SENIORS: The seniors started off very fast, kicking six
goals to Epping’s one in the first term. It was more even
in the second quarter with four goals to Epping’s three.
ELTHAM
Sam Newman is coming to Eltham so make sure you
see the social notes below.
SENIOR: Are suffering at the moment due to injuries
to key players, but put in a creditable performance last
week, fighting on well against Bundoora in the final
quarter when the match could have blown out after the
last break. Gavan Connelly, Andrew Sturgess and Brad
Perry were our best.
RESERVES: Weakened by injuries and “unavailabilities”,
the boys battled well until half-time but found a
powerful Bundoora side too strong in the second half.
Best were David Cox, Louis Evripidou and Lachie Merkel.
UNDER-19: Started off the day in great fashion with a
big win. Best were Brandon Freeman, Harry Burns and
Kyle O’Sullivan.
NEW PANTHER APP: To keep up with all the Panther
news, the club has a new app for your iPhone and
iPad. Go to App Store, search TEAM APP. Once that has
downloaded click on the + and then search Eltham

Both sides were moving the ball quickly and there was
no room for error. In the third quarter we came out after
the break hungry for the pig skin, kicking five goals to
Epping’s one. The last quarter saw us drop off letting
Epping kick four goals to our one. Mitchell Pappas and
Koden Colman kicked four a piece while Mr Reliable
Daniel Ledda was great as well as Shaun Lorenzini, Nick
Carter and youngster Harley Short.
THIS WEEK: We are home to Eltham. We will not want
to take this game easy after a number of tough recent
games against the Panthers.

HEIDELBERG
Last week was a pretty ordinary day. It started off with
a light cool breeze and just got colder as the day went
on, as did the results of the three games.
SENIORS: Got off to a good start kicking the first two
and looked to be travelling okay at the first break. Mont
hit back and in the second half we just didn’t have the
answers. They stepped on the gas and we didn’t go
with them. The challenge now is how we regroup from
a stinker like that.
RESERVES: Were lucky they were off target in the
first quarter kicking 2.11 to our 0.1 and not completely
blowing us away. The second and third quarters saw
them extend their lead but at least we fought it out
with a respectable last quarter.
UNDER-19: Led for the majority of the game and could
have been further in front with a bit better kicking at goal
which would have made it hard for Mont in a low scoring
game. They hit the lead late in the last and our boys never
gave up and nearly snatched it back, but it wasn’t to be.
We must be due to get up in one of these close ones.
WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE
This week we journey to Tigerland, where they are
so short of jokes at the moment that they had to
hire comedians a few weeks ago. Let’s hope for a
turnaround in our own form today!
LAST WEEK: A dirty day at War Memorial Park last
Saturday. The under-19s were in front at half time
but fell away to go down by a big margin after failing
to kick a goal in the second half. Better players were
Vaccaro, Perfetto and Belbasis. The twos gave their
opponents a start, chased hard but just failed to rein
them in. Our best were Corey Ray, Matt Whitters and
James McInerney. There isn’t too much to say about
the main game except that we struggled early and
never got into it at any stage. Pece Micevski and Luke
McKenna stood out and Shawie was good until he got
injured. At least the function was well attended and
finished the day on a positive note.
SANDO: Congrats Brad on parenthood!!!!! The next A
grade game will be his 250th, so it could be occasion
for more beers.
BRICKS: Stage One of the Brick Campaign will close

Division 1
GREENSBOROUGH
This week we take on Lower Plenty. There has been a
growing rivalry over the last few years and both sides
are revved up and ready to go.
SENIORS: From the first bounce the boys were up and
about and with Bongo kicking three goals in the first
quarter it really deflated West Preston. To the Roosters’
credit they played very well in the last quarter but the
boys played a great style of football.
RESERVES: West Preston have always been a strong
reserves side and once again they proved extremely
hard to beat. Our boys responded well when
challenged and it was a gutsy win.
UNDER-19: Incredible effort. The boys came out after
half time and kicked 17 goals to zero. It was great to
see James Love playing well while Konrad kicked four
goals and spent the majority of his time in the midfield.
BORO BOXING CLUB: Injured club legend Brett
Millsom has been training at a local boxing gym and
has earned himself the nickname “Iron Fist” or “Iron
Lady”. The former puny weakling has registered his
hands as deadly weapons at the local Police Station.
LOWER PLENTY
We take on Greensborough in three big games today.
SENIORS: We started well and had a competitive first
quarter in a really defensive battle against Macleod last
week. As the game wore on we didn’t sustain the effort,
the tackling pressure and run dropped away and we
found ourselves outnumbered at most contests. Reece
showed he can play both ends, Hughie and Laurie are
playing really well down back, Tom Keys plays at a level
that belies his age, Darce and Elmo worked hard all
day. Benny Buller and Vasser battled hard around the
midfield but when the heat came on we didn’t really
fire a shot.
RESERVES: We were under the pump from the outset
and things got worse from there. Down on numbers,
there was a good contribution from the under-19s
who doubled up. Nick Hannah did a sterling job
under all sorts of pressure filling the hole left by
Taggs. Hoops snagged four, Nashy and Hendo are
stating their case for promotion while Leyts and big
Floydy continue to improve.
UNDER-19: The cubs got us off to a good start. Most

Matt “Canvas Back” Kamolins is gearing up for his first
amateur loss scheduled in two months’ time.
CLUB 22: The $2 crownie experiment during the senior
game was well received. Demand was high and all were
finished before three-quarter time. Obviously we only
condone responsible serving of alcohol.
SOCIAL NOTES: Today is the Ladies Luncheon and the
ball is being held on the May 25 at Rivers Edge Events.
Ground Floor, World Trade Centre 18-38 Siddeley St,
Melbourne VIC 3005. Tickets are $135 per person.
NETBALL: With a regular shooter and defender
unavailable, Team 1 struggled to keep pace with
North Heidelberg. Undefeated Team 2 played against
second-placed North Heidelberg B. Trailing for the
first three quarters, a tremendous fightback in the
closing moments clinched a 26-26 draw. Team 3 played
undefeated St Mary’s A but fell off the pace by quarter
time and trailed for the rest of the game. Second on the
ladder, Team 4 played Fitzroy Stars A who were fourth.
After a low-scoring first quarter, we began working
well and ran out 7-goal winners. Currently bottom of
the ladder, Team 5 played against Fitzroy Stars C who
were second. The girls stormed home to win by 3 in a
massive upset!
people watching this game would agree it was a pretty
ugly win. In the end Sharpy and the boys did a good job to
get the four points and look forward to reloading for the
Slime this week. Nick Hannah and Rocky combined well
in the back half, Coursey kicked three and gave plenty of
opportunities to our runners. Alex Flannagan, Ben Hooper
and Leigh Gray’s run were pivotal in the victory.

SOCIAL: Keep in touch with what’s happening around
the club via the website www.lowerplentyfc.com.au,

FUNCTIONS: Last week’s function was a huge success.
Make sure you put the next one in your diary and get
along. We watched coach Tiger Barden take James and the
FIDA boys through their paces after the function. The boys
love pulling on their Bears jumpers and really enjoyed
running out and training in front of the big crowd. Make
sure you organize your seat/table for the next Caveman
function on July 19. Billy Brownless and Des Dowling
headline the day which is sure to be a sellout.

MONTMORENCY
It was a fantastic day for the black and white at Para
Road North with all three teams getting the chocolates
against quality opposition.
These wins should give our boys the confidence they
need as we face a formidable opponent today in
Bundoora.
SENIORS: The Bergs jumped out of the blocks and left
us standing in their wake as they took the ascendancy
in the first stanza, but we managed to get back on
even terms by the main break. Our mids started to gain
the upper hand in the second half – led by Bomber,
Junior, Senior and Rowie, and Tenno and Larry gave us
plenty of drive off the half back line. Walts and Doita
started clunking a few big grabs and we were able to
pull away from the Bergers, albeit they were missing a
lot of quality players. Special mention to young Fitzy
who has been given some massive jobs in the last two
weeks and has shown so much poise and maturity
well beyond his tender young age – well done young
man! Hats off also to Alex ‘Keeoch’ who did a fantastic
shutdown job on one of the Berg’s prime movers.
BUNDOORA
Back at home and looking to bounce back after losing
to Northcote Park, we led all day to record a 34-point
win over Eltham.
SENIORS: Varsa jumped out of the gates well against
his old side as we ran away with it. A slow last quarter
was the only blemish but the game was well in
control by then. Clokey snagged four, Eray kicked a
couple on his debut, Gaz, Dyso and Ferraro were the
other multiples. Ferraro celebrated with a spa session
on Monday night followed by a Cornetto. The skipper
was BOG, T was great all day, Brendo, Davey and
Matty D all impressed.
RESERVES: A 73-point win kept the twos unbeaten
and a game clear on top. Browny was everywhere and
ended up kicking five, with Lordy also showing why
he should be considered for a later start after a BOG
performance. Bomber held goaless for the second week
in a row, same as Buddy Franklin. Coincidence? I think
not. Joshy kicked a couple and was in the best again.
Youngy and Belvedere were also good, as was Marlon
Mitchell, the better of the Mitchell brothers. Stellas

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
RESERVES: A great win today and thoroughly
deserved, although this little black duck thought we’d
kicked ourselves out of the contest with 2.11 on the
scoreboard at quarter time! Heidelberg came back
hard at us in the last stanza but a steadier from Morgs
Nunan put the game beyond doubt. Morgs was BOG for
mine! Morritt’s airy in the goal square – enough said! A
big task today against the Bunnies who are unbeaten
ladder leaders, but where there’s a will there’s a way.
UNDER-19: We started off the season as a discrete
group of young men but we are starting to build some
solidarity and teamwork which will only grow stronger
as the season unfolds. A really solid win against a
quality opponent but let’s make this win a launching
pad for a real assault on a finals berth.
SOCIAL: Our first business lunch for the year will be
held on Friday, May 17. They are always most agreeable
days and there is ample opportunity to connect
with the local business community in a relaxed and
enjoyable environment. If you are a local small business
owner, I thoroughly recommend you join us, albeit
everybody is welcome! See Donga, Greggy Bowman or
Stilly for details.
kicked a goal, obviously no tackling coach at Eltham as
he ran into an open goal.
UNDER-19: Ran into a bigger and better side but
positives were there in performances of Brody (again),
Doddato, Presto (the bloke in the passenger seat in
that ad at the lights), Fingers Bennett, Coco and Macca.
Each and every player has a chance to redeem himself
this weekend, firstly by beating Mont this morning and
then by hooking in tonight at Bundisonic.
LADIES DAY LUNCHEON – SATURDAY, MAY 18:
12.30 pm start. $45.00 includes lunch, drinks, prizes
and loads of fun. Confirmation and payment due today
please. Make sure you see or contact Bronwyn Graham
0419 385 464 or Lee-Anne Grant 0417 109 619. To all
supporters, players and coaches make sure you stay
around at the club on May 18 as we have a couple of
very important announcements and presentations to
make. Will take place around 6pm in the rooms after
the Macleod game.
TODAY: A massive game at a ground that’s the total
opposite. Wouldn’t it be nice to head back to Yulong
tonight for Bundisonic with four points in the pocket in
all games!

MACLEOD
Blessed with some inside knowledge of his old side,
Rambo identified a couple of key opposition players
and Shawry and Brad Leggett did the rest.
ROUND 4: Longy was again superb after playing taxi driver
earlier in the day to get his great mate and fly-in player
Lincoln Withers from the airport. Thanks to the Cloudraisers
for their support in this project and we hope to see Lincoln
in a few more games. The twos had a big win led by Matty
Yarwood and Henks and the under-19s were stiff to run out
of numbers but a gutsy effort nonetheless.
MID-YEAR FUNCTION: This year’s event will be a
formal cocktail party at the Pumphouse Hotel, 128
Nicholson St, Fitzroy, on Saturday June 15. It will
feature a selection of gourmet food, beer, cider, wine,
champagne and soft drinks. Cost is $80 a head and
$150 for couples. There will be music and presentations
to new life members. Please RSVP to Megan Bramich
0414 665 962 or [email protected]
JUNE 22: Make it a big day as we head north to play
Epping. Bus will leave from De Winton to Epping then after
EPPING
It was a great day at Epping last week as our 1963
Premiership team celebrated their 50-year reunion and
it was great to have plenty of supporters come along to
cheer on the Pingers of today.
Unfortunately we didn’t get the chocolates, but we’ll be
back up again this week to try and knock off Macleod.
SENIORS: We took on last year’s flag winners and
definitely had a crack. It wasn’t to be in the end, and it
was probably our turnovers that proved the difference.
Good to see Kreuz back battling it out in the ruck and
giving Moorey, Santo and Les first use. Matty D, Twin
Cam, Shan and Brenna battled well down back all day. If
we play to our best we have a good chance today.
RESERVES: The boys battled hard last week again but
unfortunately a lack of experience showed. Hopefully we
can all learn something from the game like we have in
previous weeks and continue our gradual improvement.
Blake Dobbin is under investigation for using Grippo as
hair wax which resulted in him almost tearing his hammy
off the bone in the third quarter. Big Lachie found himself
in a new position and played his best game for the club.

JUNE 1: The Cloudraisers are holding a membership
information function between 1-2.10pm. Current
Cloudraisers: please attend and bring a friend(s)! All club
members, supporters, parents, ex-players and officials
most welcome. Free entry, discounted drinks, finger
food, and special guest speaker – legendary Assumption
College coach Ray Carroll. Contact Richie on 0425 814 105.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONS: June 29 (under-19s 1993
premiership reunion at De Winton), July 13 (beyondblue
lunch v West Preston, guest speaker Michael Carr-Gregg),
August 3 ($5000 draw at De Winton). Check the website or
Facebook page, May 25: Players’ function at De Winton.
Great to see the Skipper kick a major! Thanks to Corey,
Dempsey and Leo for helping out.
UNDER-19: Unfortunately we had to forfeit last week, but
Sean and the boys are confident of getting back on track.
Let’s put in a top performance against Macleod today.
CLUB NOTES: Happy Mother’s Day to all the Epping
Mum’s tomorrow and a belated congrats to Shep and
Steph on the recent arrival of their little girl, Lilly. It’s
footy night again tonight so get back and watch the
games, have a few, play some pool and as always bring
everyone, even the kids as we’ll have movies on for
them. Our first official function will be Fancy Dress after
West Preston-Lakeside – Round 6, May 18 (next week).
Free if you dress up, $10 if you’re not. Will be a great
night with everyone there!

Division 2 – Summary
by Michael Thompson
Whittlesea’s reign atop the Division 2 table was brought
to an abrupt halt by a sensational North Heidelberg outfit
at the Whittlesea Showgrounds last Saturday, allowing
premiership contenders Diamond Creek and Fitzroy Stars
the opportunity to catch back up to the pack.
In the end, it was Diamond Creek who emerged from
the round on top of the ladder – things so tight at the
top that only four percent separates the top three sides
at the conclusion of Round 4.
North ended the Eagles’ three-game unbeaten run with
a 22-point victory last week. Once again, it was Shane
Harvey who dominated through the midfield and up
forward for the Dogs, kicking five goals in a best on
ground performance. He was ably supported by Leigh
Gilbert who kicked four goals, as well as Jarrod King who
added another three. For the Eagles, the returning Paul
Harrison kicked four goals but it was to no avail as his
side failed to reel in a 29-point three quarter time deficit.
At Mill Park Lakes, Diamond Creek jumped up into
first place with a commanded 57-point victory over
bottom-placed South Morang – doubling the Lions
score of 9.3 (57) by kicking 17.12 (114) themselves.
Brent Gutterson booted another six goals in the victory,
which was effectively wrapped up at quarter time when
the Creekers shot to a 29-point lead. Daniel Watson
kicked three goals for the Lions as they remain the only
winless side in Division 2.
In an important ‘eight-point’ game, Hurstbridge survived
a third quarter fight back from Lalor before kicking away
in the last quarter to record a six-goal win. After trailing
by five goals at both the first and long breaks, the Bloods
fought back strongly to close within seven points at three
quarter time before kicking the first goal of the last quarter
to make for a one-point ball game. Ultimately the visitors
ran out of legs, as the Bridges kicked seven of the final
eight goals in the last quarter to win 15.11 (101) to 9.11
(65). Daniel Francis kicked four goals for the winners as he
continued his impressive start in Hurstbridge colours.
Fitzroy Stars rebounded from their Round 3 loss to
North Heidelberg by kicking away in the second half to
defeat Mernda by 31 points. Inaccurate kicking at goal
was again a worry for the Stars, however big forward
Patrick Davis kicked five goals in the absence of Samuel
Autio. Although Mernda had fought to level the scores
at half time, it was no match for the Stars and was
blanketed for much of the second half.
Round 5 looms as another important round which
will provide an even clearer outlook for the Division 2
competition.
Whittlesea backs up from its disappointing loss to
North Heidelberg by welcoming first-placed Diamond
Creek to the Showgrounds for the first time in three
years. The winner of the game will consolidate its place
inside the top two and gain a significant advantage in
the chase for a double chance come September.
Meanwhile, the in-form Bulldogs will be hosted by
fired-up rival Lalor who desperately needs a victory to
move away from South Morang at the bottom of the
table. Given the huge rivalry in place between these
sides, form lines and ladder positions can be thrown
out the window leading into this clash.
South Morang continues its search for win number one
in 2013 when it hosts the Fitzroy Stars at Mill Park Lakes,
where the Stars looked favoured to win consecutive
games for the first time this season.
Finally, at Schotters Road, Mernda and Hurstbridge
will meet in a game which will define who is ready to
challenge the likes of Whittlesea, Diamond Creek, Fitzroy
Stars and North Heidelberg at the latter end of the season.
The winner will progress to 3-2 record after five games.

Division 2
WHITTLESEA
A much needed wake up call for the seniors last week
as North Heidelberg outplayed a scratchy Eagles team.
SENIORS: Skippers Garrett and Roy both tried hard
all day, but there was little positives to take out of the
performance. After a solid week on the track, the boys
will be keen as mustard to take back top spot with a
win over Diamond Creek today.
RESERVES: The reserves are going from strength-tostrength and notched up their fourth straight win this
year. The ex-Wallan boys Jordy and Hoops looked the
goods while Lashy u-turned his way into the best to
add to his good start to the year. They still need to find
the goals more often and will be looking for Marty to
jag a few this week as he hits career-best form.
UNDER-19: It’s ‘The Carey Cup’! He has been talking
about it all week – JC is coaching against his Dad, who is in
charge of the Diamond Creek under-19s. JC will be trying
to outcoach a bloke that can honestly say he has wiped
his bum. Good luck JC. The under-19s will be looking to
remain undefeated against Diamond Creek this week.
DIAMOND CREEK
After three important wins last weekend, all three
sides are now preparing themselves for top of the table
clashes with Whittlesea at the Showgrounds today.
SENIORS: The scoreboard probably wasn’t an accurate
reflection of the contest at South Morang last Saturday.
Whilst we set up the win with solid first and second
quarters, it was to South Morang’s credit that they
challenged us in all aspects of the game. It was tough
conditions for both sides, something our players will
learn from and take in to the clash against Whittlesea.
RESERVES: With a number of changes to the side it’s
pleasing to see everybody getting a chance to play.
Up until three quarter time it was an even contest.
Then kicking with the breeze in the last quarter the
boys were able to break away and record a hardfought victory. Keep working hard on the track to find
further improvement. Big game today against the
unbeaten Eagles.
UNDER-19: The boys ventured out to Reservoir last
Saturday which saw Jayden Hamer get off to a flyer
kicking three goals in the first five minutes. The boys

LALOR
Round 4 saw Lalor head off to Hurstbridge for what
would be a critical game for both clubs. Both headed
into the clash with a 1-2 record and this appeared a
great chance for both clubs to record their second win
of the year.
RESERVES: The reserves started the day with a
few players short after they were unable to top up
players from the under-19s who were scheduled
to play away from the main games. We went in
depleted and accordingly were beaten comfortably.
Hopefully numbers are better this week and a better
performance fellow.
SENIORS: The seniors made a few changes to their
side from the Round 3 loss to Whittlesea, yet looked
good on paper. However, Hurstbridge came out
running and kicked the first five goals before we
managed our first. The second quarter saw both sides’
defences work overtime with only two goals scored at
each end. The third term went to Lalor with a fivegoal to one stanza. It was us with all the momentum
NORTH HEIDELBERG
This week we play one of our oldest foes in Lalor.
We’ve developed a fantastic history against the Bloods
over the past 30 years and they always grow another
leg when we travel up there. Therefore, we will expect
nothing less this week.
SENIORS: A fantastic victory up at the Whittlesea
Showgrounds by the seniors last weekend, which saw
a 140-odd point turnaround since we last played each
other. From all reports it was one of the best victories
the club has played in for many years and the boys
belted the song out loud and proud afterwards.
Shane Harvey was best on ground with five goals,
Kingy was exceptional, along with Grimace, Gilbo, L.B,
and Matty M.
RESERVES: The seconds played an awful game against
the unbeaten Eagles and trailed by 45pts at three
quarter time in the top of the table clash. However,
some long and direct football saw in the last quarter
saw the boys go down by only 14 points. With a lot
of talent in the team we seem to be our own worst
36
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
and the scores were only seven points apart at the
end of the third, making for an exciting final term for
all on lookers. The Bloods kicked the first goal of the
final quarter and our expectations grew further, yet
things changed quickly with Hurstbridge slamming
on the next six goals to run away winners. There was
plenty of soul searching done after the game. Let’s
keep our heads up and come back hard against North
Heidelberg this week.
AROUND THE TRAPS: A great night was had by
all at the Mexican food night with most players in
attendance. A special thanks to Taco Bill for providing
the Mexican hats and to Teagan Sneddan for organizing
the margarita machine and tequila. The joke of the
night went to Hursy with. Why did the Mexican push his
wife off the cliff? Tequila.
GO BLOODS
enemy at the moment, but we will overcome that and
hopefully get back on the winners list this week against
Lalor. Unfortunately Blissy has decided to hand over the
reins from this week onwards to Large but he will still
be helping Rudy out in the box. We thank him for his
contribution over the past two years, which included
leading us to the Grand Final last year. He has been
fantastic for the North Heidelberg Football Club and he
will continue to play a part this year.

Division 2
SOUTH MORANG
Last week we faced premiership fancy Diamond Creek
at the Lakes Reserve and we were looking for a more
consistent performance.
SENIORS: The boys got off to another slow start last
week allowing Diamond Creek to kick 5 goals to 1 in the
first quarter. From there it was pretty much one sided,
even though we had our opportunities. We turned
the ball over far too often giving Diamond Creek easy
scoring opportunities. There are positive signs though,
with youngsters such as Maddy, Watto and Hammer all
in the goals. Best: Maddy, Watto, Jet, Toady, Moz.
RESERVES: This week was always going to be a tough
task, coming up against the reigning premiers, but after
coming off two good wins, the boys were confident. It
was the same story as the seniors, we got off to a slow
start, which you can’t allow to happen. To their credit
they show a lot of fight, getting within 14 points at one
stage before Diamond Creek kicked away to win by 8
goals. If they play at their best they can match it with
any one. Best: Unit, Rizza, Shutters and Haggy.
FITZROY STARS
What a great day for the football club in what was built
up as a make or break week.
Mernda had obviously had a good start to the season
in the seniors and were looking to cement a spot in the
four while both of our sides had to win to stay in touch
with the rest of the competition.
RESERVES: The reserves got off to a flyer and were
never challenged in their contest. One of the most
pleasing aspects for our coaches was the way in
which our reserves played as a team and every one of
our boys stood up in what was our most impressive
performance. While everybody did their jobs, there
were some outstanding individual performances. DT
kicked 12 while Cozza had it on a string. Young Jimmy
showed some dash and Leigh was outstanding again
down back.
SENIORS: Our boys were on the top right from the
start. Other than our conversion rate, we dominated
in most areas of the game. Jake was terrific in the ruck
giving KB, Mouse and Mungara first use of the ball.
All our forwards looked dangerous and our defence

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
UNDER-19: The under-19s faced Warringal Hawks away
in a game we expected to win. Unfortunately the boys
couldn’t get the job done, eventually going down by
less than a kick. Keep working hard and the result will
come. Best: Lesha, Jesse W, Kyle.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: Unfortunately there are no
real nominations for this week’s tool, or none worthy
enough to go to print. So a special mention goes to
young Maddy Bell for a couple of weeks ago. Young
Maddy always wears a hat to training so his fringe
doesn’t get in his eyes. When wearing a hat was
banned, young Maddy tied his fringe up in a ponytail to
the amusement of 30 of his teammates.
AROUND THE DEN: Reminder of the “Dress Up”

THIS WEEK: We come up against another finals
contender in Fitzroy Stars. Lets get off to a good start
and bring home the points.
was solid all day, led by Boogs and Phelpsy. Obviously
the area we must improve in is our conversion rate as
24 behinds will hurt us against the top sides. South
Morang will be another tough assignment this week
and we are hoping that we can put a few wins together
to get some momentum going.
NETBALL: Our netballers didn’t have such a wonderful
week with three losses recorded. Jess has requested
that all our girls make a commitment to training so that
improvements can be made with fitness and structures.
SOCIAL: The old man Boogs will be celebrating his 30th
in style on Saturday night and let’s wait and see whether
there are any other announcements on the horizon.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: After sorting out his demons
during the week by visiting his priest, Big Patty has
found his mojo again. However if he plays on again
in the goal square he must go back to confession. For
God’s sake, get at least three steps away from the man
on the mark before you play on big fella. But well done
on your five goals which should have been six.

MERNDA
Well it was a disappointing weekend of footy in Round
4. Let’s move on and hopefully bounce back today
against a Hurstbridge outfit hungry to snare a second
straight win.
SENIORS: Gave it a real go in the first half and perhaps
should have been behind by a bit more at the first break,
but managed to fight back and level the scores at halftime. Then the skill errors started to set in, particularly
coming out of defence. Not even a Willo rev-up could spark
the boys as we fell 43=points down at one point before
kicking a couple of late consolation goals. Dave Berryman
was excellent playing a high half forward role, Roh Davies
was good and Millsy again was stoic in defence.
RESERVES: Pretty poor performance. We just didn’t seem
switched on for about 95% of the game and a 123-point
demolition was the result. Matty Milner and Marcus
Meadows – playing his first game for the year – were
pretty good, Adam Ryan tried very hard as well and tried
to spark the boys by kicking a pretty good goal in the
second quarter. Apart from that we really didn’t have too
HURSTBRIDGE
We make the small trip to Mernda and after two big wins
last week we will be looking to keep that same form.
SENIORS: After a few mental fades last Saturday we
were able to put Lalor away and it will be something
that we can’t let happen against Mernda. This week we
will be looking to put together four quarters.
RESERVES: What a way to finally get on the winners’
list, with a great win over Lalor. Our preparation was
a lot better and it showed. After enjoying the win, we
have knuckled down this week as there is still plenty of
work to be done and Mernda will be a tough game.
UNDER-19: After a week off last week, the under-19s
are looking forward to getting back out on the track this
week and working hard to get a win. This week it will be
all about leadership and putting in the extra effort.
NETBALL: The Bridgettes took the court against one
of the top sides last week with some of our players
missing. Spirits were still high and the girls gave it their
all, losing by only nine goals, but showing some great
signs of what could be done with a full squad.

many winners. Still searching for our first win of the year.
FULL MOON PARTY: Great night! Was enjoyable
to see some very good summer clothing on and the
fluoro paint was flying! Certainly a great night and just
a reminder to everyone at the club to make an effort to
attend these functions. They are always a great time.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: So, who was the waterboy
running around like a tool in the first quarter, giving
away a free kick for his troubles? Not even his dog
would have made that criminal error. If it weren’t for
said waterboy perhaps we would have lost by only 30
points instead of 31! Everyone who was there will know
who scored this well deserved Tool of the Week.

Division 3 – Summary
Watsonia produced one of its best wins in years last
weekend when it knocked off Thomastown and the
Saints today have the chance to record consecutive wins
for the first time in their three-year stay in Division 3.
Having threatened Reservoir and Panton Hill in the
preceding fortnight, the Saints claimed their first
big scalp of the season last Saturday when they
accounted for previously unbeaten Thomastown at
A.K. Lines Reserve.
In the upset of the round, the Saints claimed a 26-point
victory and kept Thomastown to just seven goals and
13 scoring shots for the day.
After challenging both Reservoir and Panton Hill for
three quarters before fading in the last, Lochie Dornauf
would be rapt with his side’s four-quarter effort last
weekend. Watsonia won all four quarters against the
Bears and had double the scoring chances of their more
fancied opponent.
2012 best and fairest winner Matthew Crompton was
Watsonia’s best for a second successive week, while
Tony Hogg played his best game of the season since
returning from Bundoora.
Sitting fourth on the ladder with two wins from the
opening four rounds, Watsonia now has the chance to
strenghten its place inside finals race when it travels to
Pitcher Park to take on fifth-placed Parkside.
The Devils succumbed to St Mary’s in a close one at
Whatmough Park last weekend, losing by 14 points.
After trailing at every change, Parkside hit the front
when it booted the first goal of the final term.
However, St Mary’s finished with five of the final eight
goals of the game to inflict Parkside with its second
successive loss.
It makes for an important clash today, with Parkside
desperately needing to win to stay in touch with the
top four. After upsetting Panton Hill in Round 1, the
Devils could fall two games off the pace if they were to
lose to the Saints.
But following three unsuccessful seasons, Watsonia will
be equally desperate to cement its place inside the top
four and keep its promising form going.
Panton Hill and Reservoir meet in a top of the table
clash when they square off at Yarrambat Memorial Park,
where the winner assumes top place after five rounds.
Reservoir remains the only unbeaten side in the
Division 3 competition however sits second on the
table given it has played one less game than the
Redbacks and has an inferior percentage.
As reported in this section last weekend, Reservoir’s last
quarter performances have been incredible this season.
Over their first three games in 2013 the Mustangs have
booted 16 goals in the final quarter of games and have
conceded just three. They average 35 points in last
quarters and concede an average of just seven.
Panton Hill has been in equally ruthless form over the
past three weeks – beating each of St Mary’s, Watsonia
and Heidelberg West by heavy margins.
Last season’s runners-up smashed the Hawks to the
tune of 104 points last Saturday.
The third game of the round sees Thomastown host
Heidelberg West at Main Street Reserve.
The Bears will be raging favourites despite last week’s
loss to Watsonia and a win will likely see the side return
to second place – barring a draw in the Panton Hill v
Reservoir encounter.
Thomastown will be looking to regain its form of Round
2 and 3 ahead of big matches against Reservoir and
Panton Hill in the next fortnight.
Heidelberg West is searching for redemption following
a thumping loss last weekend – clearly the Hawks worst
performance of the season.

PANTON HILL
Heidelberg West started with a slight breeze, but it was
the Hills that did all the attacking and kicked five first
quarter goals.
SENIORS: The midfield was winning first use through
Simon Amore and Nathan Hendry which was giving our
forwards plenty of opportunities to score. The second
quarter was much like the first with the Hills forwards
taking strong marks and converting them to goals.
Jarrod McGough started to make an impact on the
wing, as did Nick Lowther up forward. At half time we
held an 8-goal lead. Our back line had been fantastic
and continued on in the third, led by Will Box and Joffa
Byron. Youngsters Tim Duckworth and Lauchy Pearson
were playing great games, while Ben Finnin started
to hit the scoreboard as did Teddy after taking some
great marks. By the last change we had added another
6 goals. With the game well and truly in the bag we
took the opportunity to give a couple of players a
well-earned rest, which released a few younger players
RESERVIOR
I am sure everyone who witnessed the ANZAC
honouring prior to the game against Heidelberg West
two weeks ago would want to thank those responsible.
Those involved did themselves and the ANZACS proud.
CONGRATULATIONS: To Luke Moloney who played his
50th game against Heidelberg West. This week ruckman
Ryan Keyes plays his 100 game for the Mustangs. Ryan
worked extremely hard during the off season, losing
many kilos and in the three games to date his around
the ground coverage and ruck work has been excellent.
Congratulations Ryan – we hope to see you leading our
big man brigade for many more years.
UNDER-19: In Round 3 the under-19s were
completely outplayed for three quarters but were
able to outscore Warringal Hawks by 24 points in
the last quarter to eventually go down by 18 points.
Better players: Ben Spokes, Chris Makroppoulos,
Aaron Zampichelli, Remy Perin.
RESERVES: It’s acceptable that the wind played havoc
with the game but to kick two goals for the game and
finished with a total of only 19 points for the game
was extremely disappointing. On a brighter note it was
pleasing to see Dickie Collins playing his first game for the

into the midfield. We kicked another five goals for the
quarter and ran out 104-point winners.
RESERVES: With 8 scoring shots to 1 in the first quarter,
it looked like the standard was set for the game.
However, West decided to turn it on in the second
quarter and outscored us for the term. Brassy then
stirred the boys into action for the third. Brett Middleton
and A.J. controlled the ruck and again Gilly and Collo,
now aided by Dave Varano, kept West to only 2 goals.
Despite running rampant we only managed 3.6! The last
quarter though was a good way to finish and we came
away with a 42-point win. Among the best were Prency,
Dave Varano, Brad Colliver, Adam Anderson, Simon
Gunn, James Gilliland and Daniel Pratt with seven goals!
PAST PLAYERS AND LIFE MEMBERS DAY: Has been

season. It’s hoped that he will shortly run into form and be
back in the seniors. Better players: Mark Fraser, Adam Hull,
Mark Pirro, Luke Mazzeo, Luke Moloney and Brett Kreitling.
SENIORS: Again it was only our last quarter
performance that got us over the line against
Heidelberg West thus enabling the Mustangs to retain
the “White Ribbon Cup” donated by Stockdale & Leggo
Real Estate, 966 High Street Reservoir Vic 3073. Better
players: Justin Kuchel, Cameron Rooney, Ryan Keyes,

THOMASTOWN
From the outset we knew Watsonia was going to be a
tough assignment and it certainly panned out that way.
SENIORS: We were never able to string together
enough good passages of play to give ourselves a
chance. Hopefully we can take away some valuable
lessons and bounce back.
RESERVES: It was the battle of the two undefeated
teams in the competition and what a contest it proved
to be. The result came right down to the wire, with
Watsonia winning by a few points. There are a number
of things that we need to work on and, first and
foremost is our discipline.
NETBALL: Honourable losses for our netball girls last
week. The A team went down to Bundoora Comets, whilst
our B team lost by 10 goals. Keep your chin up girls.
JUNIORS: The grading games are now complete. The
under-15s went down to Hurstbridge by 18 points.
Kicking 4.10 didn’t help the cause. The under-11s had
to give a forfeit to West Preston and played a scratch
match. There are some good signs with the players who
are getting better each week. Under-9s played West
Preston and are also getting better each week.
HEIDELBERG WEST
Last week the seniors and reserves hosted Panton
Hill at Heidelberg Park, while the under-19s took on
South Morang.
SENIORS: Last Saturday we were completely outclassed
by a very impressive Panton Hill outfit. However, it’s a
new week and a new opportunity is presented today
as we get the chance to tackle Thomastown head on
in search of our first win of the season. Best players
against Panton Hill were young Bradley Moore, Terry
West, Dan Bailey and Aidan Young.
RESERVES: We fought hard all day and refused to be
blown out the water by. We were hurt late in each
quarter thanks to costly mistakes and were never able
to close the gap enough to seriously threaten the
Hillers. Best players were Andy Muir, Craig Dunlop on
debut and the versatile Jason Butera. No doubt both
teams will be smarting and looking to bounce back
hard at Main Street Oval today.
WARRINGAL HAWKS: The results weren’t all bad with
the future of our club, the Warringal Hawks, defeating

to properly prepare. It will take place tonight at our

AROUND THE LAIR: It seems as though Joe Fiore has a
new companion in his life. Joe is now the proud owner
of a kitten and says that the newly acquired pet is a great
companion. Ahead of Mother’s Day this Sunday, it gives
me great pleasure to announce that Higgins will be
trotting around on Saturday in bright pink boots. Never
one to actually need encouragement, Higgins is looking
forward to donning the commemorative footwear and
might even give away a signed pair to a lucky lady at Man
O Man night. And finally, I’m not too sure BJ will take to
cricket very well if his efforts at Watsonia are anything to
go by. BJ took to the cricket nets after the game and didn’t
think too many people were watching when he fell A over

South Morang by four points to claim their second
win on the trot and move to fourth on the ladder. The
young Hawks are improving rapidly and are starting
to reap some reward for the hard work they have been
applying on the training track. Best players were Jack
Fulgrabe, Ryan Gall, Jordan Allen, Jake Grimshaw and
Kevin Caldera. Keep an eye out for these boys over the
next few weeks as they will continue to press for the
chance to make their senior debuts.
PLAYING MEMBERSHIP: It is now Round 5 and playing
memberships are due. To be eligible for future selection
they will need to be paid. If a payment plan is required

PARKSIDE
The boys returned from a bye to take on St Mary’s last
weekend and left Whatmough Park with a huge win in
the reserves and a close loss in the seniors.
SENIORS: We had a mixed build up to last week’s
game with a couple of late withdrawals and two of the
boys involved in a car crash on the way to the game.
With additional numbers required, there was even talk
of washed up club goal sneak ‘The Wiz’ pulling on the
boots. In the end St Mary’s was just too good and the
final score line of 99 to 85 probably flattered us a little.
Well done to Ahmad who backed up after a starring
performance for the reserves and ended the day with
eight quarters under his belt. We’re back at Pitcher Park
today and we need a win to keep the season on track.
RESERVES: The reserves pulled off a huge win last
week. The boys showed a lot of spirit to get the win
after going in at half time down by a couple of goals.
Alber kicked two points which is the highest score
tally of his career and it may have sparked the boys as
they went on to win by 10 goals. We haven’t had a lot
WATSONIA
Last weekend saw last year’s wooden spooners come
up against one of the flag favourites and what a result it
turned out to be.
SENIORS: For the first time this year we played
four quarters of good team football and look what
happened – a five-goal win. It might have surprised
some but it’s what Doorknob expects. We were
undermanned early and it wouldn’t have surprised
anyone if we got ran over but the players showed guts
and determination to get better as the game went on.
It was hard to find a best as all played well but as usual
Hinesy played like he’s looking for a pay rise, along
with Hoggy, Matty C, T-Mac and young Cottsy who gets
better every week.
RESERVES: Up against the only other undefeated
team we knew it was going to be a tough game.
Thomastown raced out of the blocks and were looking
quite comfortable. To our guys credit we slowly clawed
ourselves back into it. With Clanc being double teamed
scoring was tough all day and it became a battle of the
backlines. It was our backline that held firm as we got

of wins in recent years let alone a 10-goal come from
behind win so the three blokes who knew the song
belted it out. Ahmed stole the show last week with
seven goals, while Sammy Davies was a handy inclusion
after missing the start of the season with a quad injury.
Hopefully the momentum we picked up last week
holds up today and the good forms continues.
SOCIAL: Coogee Bay has been confirmed as the footy
trip destination and plans are in full swing to get us
there. Deposits are due in the next couple of weeks so
start putting away your pennies.
TODAY: We return to Pitcher Park to host Watsonia.
Their seniors are coming off a big win against
Thomastown last Saturday and their reserves remain
undefeated so two tough games await us.
home by two points. Once again Kegsy led the way and
was well supported by the whole defence.
UNDER-19: Started the day against Whittlesea and
after kicking the first goal nothing really happened
for us. A spirited third quarter was following by the
worst last quarter. The boys now have a chance to
redeem themselves.
THIS WEEK: The under-19s play at home against
Reservoir and will be out to make amends for last week.
The rest of us are off to Parkside so all get along and get
on board before the wagon is full.
SOCIAL: After a beer with the Parkside boys it’s Shuffle
Night at the club. Be there by 7.30pm. $10 a song and
if your song is played last you take the cash. This is a
compulsory function for all senior players.
BUSINESS LUNCH: Was a great success with Chris
Bennett and Sam Kekovich leaving the room in
hysterics. It was terrible to see the Doorknob take home
all the prizes. I’ve never seen anyone load their car and
leave as quickly. Hopefully he doesn’t win anything but
footy matches for the rest of the season.

AIDAN CORR—AFL DEBUT
NORTHERN KNGIHTS TAC DRIVING ACTIVITY
As part of our TAC Partnership program this year the
Northern Knights continued their tradition of having
players drive to an away game in country Victoria. The
boys were asked to make the trip down the Princes
Freeway for our Round 6 clash against the Geelong
Falcons on Saturday, May 4. The activity was well
supported with a large number of players in the squad
taking part. The club arranged a meeting point 20
minutes outside of Geelong for players to stop and
break up the drive. This TAC initiative provided an
opportunity for all L-plate drivers from the Knights,
to gain over an hour’s driving experience in a range
of various driving conditions, on their journey from
metropolitan Melbourne to Geelong.

THE NORTHERNER

Congratulations to 2012 Knights vice-captain Aidan
Corr on making his AFL debut with Greater Western
Sydney Giants last Saturday afternoon versus Essendon
at Etihad Stadium. Aidan started slowly but worked
his into the game as the Giants attacked hard in the
opening half. Aidan finished with 7 possessions and 2
tackles for the day. We hope Aidan can continue to gain
opportunities at AFL level and wish him all the best for
the remainder of the season.
JARYD CACHIA—AFL DEBUT
Congratulations also to 2009 Knights player Jaryd
Cachia on making his AFL debut with Carlton on
Sunday afternoon versus Melbourne at the MCG. Jaryd
was a late inclusion prior to the game and started as
Carlton’s substitute. Jaryd was injected into the game
in the last quarter and collected 8 disposals and laid
a tackle. We hope Jaryd can continue to gain further
opportunities at AFL level and wish him all the best for
the rest of the season.
