2013 STRENGTH OF AMERICA
AWARD WINNERS
The National Strength and Conditioning
Association (NSCA) and the President’s
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports
are proud to announce the 2013 Strength
of America award winners. These
awards recognize high schools that have
represented the gold standard in strength
and conditioning programs.
With the increasing numbers of
inconsistent gym conditions and strength
programs across the country, the NSCA
and the President’s Council on Physical
Fitness and Sports are working together to
provide all high schools concise guidelines
to improve their curricula. High schools
are measured in four major categories:
supervision, education, program, and
facilities.

NSCA ASSISTANTSHIP PROGRAM
The NSCA offers five (5) assistantships
each year to qualified candidates who wish
to further their careers in the strength and
conditioning field. Each assistantship will
pair a candidate with an expert in the field
to develop the up-and-coming generation
of strength and conditioning professionals.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain
practical and applied experience from
skilled and knowledgeable mentors.
Mentors are required to hold the NSCA
Registered Coach Distinction and have
at least four years experience as a Head
Strength and Conditioning Coach.
In addition to learning invaluable tricks
of the trade from the best, candidates
who are awarded this 12-month-long
assistantship will receive a stipend.
Candidates who will be considered
must have completed a graduate or
undergraduate strength and conditioning
program from an accredited college or
university, have previous strength and
conditioning experience, and currently
hold the NSCA Certified Strength
and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®)
certification. To apply, please submit a
resume, official college transcripts, three
letters of recommendation, and two essays
to the NSCA. Submissions are reviewed
twice a year and must be received no later
than October 1, 2013 or March 1, 2014.
More information about the NSCA
Assistantship Program and how to apply
can be found on the website at http://
www.nsca.com/Education/Programs/
NSCA-Assistantship-Program/#anchor1.
Additionally, former assistantship recipient,
Ben Hoffman, did a brief interview to share
his experience with the NSCA Assistantship
Program.

which gave me the opportunity to develop
and implement programs, and contribute
to the department, basically as an assistant
coach. I learned how to collaborate with
other coaches, and we were lucky enough
to coach the 2012 Division II Football
National Championship team. The NSCA
Assistantship Program definitely allowed
me to gain the necessary experience I
needed to become a full-time strength
and conditioning coach and I do not know
where I would be today if I had not been
awarded the position.
NSCA ASSISTANTSHIP PROGRAM
INTERVIEW: BEN HOFFMAN
Ben Hoffman is entering his first year as
the Assistant Strength and Conditioning
Coach at Webber International University.
He completed the NSCA Assistantship
Program while at Valdosta State University
(VSU), working predominately with
women’s soccer, football, and baseball.
He was part of the university’s first two
women’s soccer seasons and helped
the football team prepare for their 2012
Division II National Championship. Prior
to VSU, Hoffman received his Master’s
degree in Physical Education from the
University of Houston in 2010. While at
Houston, he volunteered with the Cougar’s
Sports Performance Department, working
with soccer, softball, tennis, and diving.
He attended Southwestern University
in Georgetown, TX, and graduated in
2008 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Kinesiology. He was a member of the
soccer team for all four years and acted as
team captain during his senior season.
HOW HAS THE NSCA ASSISTANTSHIP
PROGRAM HELPED YOU IN YOUR
CAREER?
The NSCA Assistantship Program has
been a big part of my continued growth
as a strength and conditioning coach. I
was at a disadvantage in the field, having
not worked as a graduate assistant in
strength and conditioning as I pursued my
Master’s degree. The NSCA Assistantship
Program provided the opportunity for me
to gain a wealth of experience and learn
from a veteran coach, Michael Doscher.
At Valdosta State University (VSU), I was
treated as if I was a graduate assistant,
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST
“TAKEAWAY” WORKING UNDER YOUR
RSCC MENTOR?
My biggest “takeaway” from Coach
Doscher is to always be open to new or
different ideas. At VSU, developing and
implementing programs, especially for
football, was a team effort and we all
contributed. I appreciate and respect
Doscher for listening to everyone’s ideas
and allowing us to speak our minds. Not
only did this allow us to write effective
programs, but it brought us closer
together as a staff. I see that as a crucial
element in running an effective strength
and conditioning department, and it’s
something I will always remember and
strive to emulate.
WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU USE
MOST WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING
CONTINUING EDUCATION?
For continuing education, I mostly read
strength and conditioning publications and
research (books, journals, websites, etc.),
attend conferences and clinics, and observe
and discuss things with other strength
coaches. I think that reading, combined
with discussion and observation, is a great
way to learn. It is always interesting to see
how other coaches are doing things and
how you might adjust your programs to
incorporate new ideas.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND OTHER YOUNG
COACHES TO PURSUE AN ASSISTANTSHIP
AND WHY?
I would definitely recommend young
coaches to pursue an assistantship because
it is a great way to gain experience in this
field. It is often very tough financially when
just beginning your career as a strength
coach. This assistantship can help alleviate
some of that strain and allow you to focus
on learning and becoming a better coach.
Having been awarded one of the few NSCA
Assistantships is a great source of pride for
me personally, and it is also a great resume
booster.
WHO HAS INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST
THUS FAR IN YOUR CAREER AND WHY?
I think that Coach Dale Jones of Texas A&M
has influenced me the most in my young
career as a strength coach. I interned with
him when he was a coach at the University
of Houston. I did not have a strength and
conditioning coach as an athlete in college,
so Jones introduced me to strength and
conditioning. I had the opportunity to
take graduate classes that he taught while
assisting him in the weight room. This
combination allowed me to get theoretical
and applied experience by learning
strength and conditioning concepts in the
classroom and then helping implement
those same concepts in the workouts.
