its Board of Managers present its 2005 annual report.
This little book is chockful of big news. Between these covers, you will find measurable outcomes
and impressive accomplishments that you helped make possible. Our success begins with you, the
people that most believe in us. Your commitment breathes life into our mission.
Five years ago, we recognized mission sustainability as our priority. We assessed our strengths and
weaknesses. We identified our opportunities and our limitations. We’re delighted to tell you that
we’ve stabilized operations; we have big plans for the future; and we’re poised for growth.
These are exciting times!
With the approach of our sesquicentennial in 2008, a certain degree of reflection is inevitable. Over
the years, this organization has changed to meet the changing needs of those we serve. Yet in all
that we do, we are guided by our four core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. They
are a part of our heritage and will be part of our future. The strength of our organization is in its rich
traditions, its time-tested values and its mission.
For nearly 150 years, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago has built strong kids, strong families and
strong communities. We hope we can continue to count on your support as we build an even
stronger and more vibrant YMCA for many years to come.

Serving communities with caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
In order to respond to a community’s needs, one must care enough to listen. We think we do that
extraordinarily well.
Caring for infants and mothers-to-be
Twenty years ago, 28 in 1,000 children born on the West Side of Chicago did not live to their first birthday. That
figure was on par with Third World countries.
The YMCA stepped in, went door-to-door, and identified adolescent mothers and mothers-to-be that didn’t
have access to the healthcare and medical attention they needed. That’s how the YMCA West Side Future
program was established, by listening to the community and caring enough to respond.
Since then, YMCA West Side Future has impacted the lives of more than 18,000 infants. In 2005, West Side
Future helped almost 2,000 low-income mothers, infants and toddlers. We’re proud that 100 percent of the
mothers-to-be counseled at West Side Future delivered healthy babies.
Caring for campers
We are fortunate to have one of the most unique camps in the region, Camp Duncan, where children who
typically do not have a camp experience enjoy the great outdoors. Our specialty over-night camps build a
supportive community for children that face many challenges—children that are burn survivors, manage
diabetes or live with Tourette’s Syndrome. Children that just want to fit in but feel they can’t. The YMCA partners
with medical groups and specialists to provide the emotional care and physical attention these children need.
Caring for seniors
Senior citizens are the fastest growing population of our society.
Increasingly, we see friends trying to take care of both their parents and their children, trying to divide their time
without shortchanging anyone.
For more than 20 years, the Third Age YMCA has provided homemakers for older adults and individuals with
disabilities. They come in for a few hours a day to take their clients to a doctor’s appointment, do some light
cleaning and maybe just keep them company. Of the 1,000 home-bound, low-income elders served, 85 percent
were able to remain in their homes because of the services we provide. It’s true what they say—there’s no
place like home.

Through open collaboration with many Chicago resources, the YMCA impacts communities in a measurable way.
Honesty: Honoring our commitment to serve
We support the well-being of children, families and individuals throughout the region. Not only do we offer a safe
place for recreational activities, our organization offers more than 55 social service programs that address
critical needs across Chicagoland.
The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is the largest non-profit employer in the state, one of the largest licensed
childcare providers in the state and one of the region’s largest human service organizations. The Association is
comprised of six human service centers, 23 membership and program centers, ten housing operations and four
resident camps. We also offer programs at more than 100 extension sites throughout the Chicagoland area.
Honesty: Honoring our civic duties
With your support, we provide more than $3.5 million a year in scholarships and financial assistance for children
and adults who wish to participate in YMCA programs and services but could not otherwise afford to do so.
More than 7,000 volunteers share their time and resources to advance YMCA programs. With the help of more
than 11,000 donors, we build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
Honesty: Partnerships built on shared commitment
The success of our mission is crucial to the hundreds of thousands of people that rely on our programs and
services. The YMCA’s partners in service are key to that success as they bring together and maximize the
impact of the Chicago area’s best resources.
One example of growing YMCA effectiveness through partnerships is the Association’s increasing work with the
United Way of Metropolitan Chicago. Because the United Way sees the YMCA as an agency partner that can
demonstrate measurable outcomes, it has increased its support of Y programs. The YMCA also has a strong
track record of partnering with city, state and federal government agencies in bringing a wide range of service
to Chicagoans of all backgrounds.
Elementary and secondary schools, churches, community groups, libraries, human service providers and
universities are a few of the many other partners that extend the YMCA’s reach across the metropolitan area.

People from all walks of life enter our doors. Each one brings a unique set of skills and has a unique set of
needs. We respect them for who they are and who they may become. Many of our programs are designed to
help individuals realize their potential.
We strive to give individuals the tools they need to become successful members of society, regardless of their
age or personal challenges.
Respecting hope
Our challenges don’t stop at the city limits and neither do our efforts.
There’s no better example than our YMCA Street Intervention program. While the Chicago Police Department
estimates there are 40 active gangs in the city, totaling more than 38,000 gang members, what was typically an
urban problem has become a suburban issue. Our program uses multiple intervention and prevention methods
to address gang violence and gang participation. In 2005, this program impacted more than 1,000 youth and
adults. Our youth’s future isn’t found on the streets. Their future is in classrooms with structured learning and
mentoring opportunities. As we help these young men and women exit a gang, we’re introducing them to a
world of hope.
Respecting leadership potential
The lives we affect are those of our future leaders, and some of them have already sat in city council chambers.
For the past two decades, the YMCA Youth and Government program has given youth the opportunity to
enhance their leadership skills by serving as appointed officials from all areas of the metropolitan region. They
have been introduced to the complex issues our cities address each day. As youth gain a better understanding
of the challenges we face, they benefit from the compassion greater awareness creates.
Respecting vision
For more than 20 years, the Pilsen YMCA was an excellent example of how a small YMCA made a huge impact
with very few resources. This YMCA reached out to youth in the Pilsen and Little Village neighborhoods with
leadership, after-school and college preparation programs. Although it was in a century-old storefront with no
gym, outdoor playground or room to expand, we had plenty of room to dream. We envisioned a prominent
facility in the heart of the Latino community and we accomplished that vision this year. More than $11 million
were raised for this long-awaited and eagerly anticipated YMCA. Bruce V. Rauner of GTCR Golder, Rauner, Inc.,
and his wife Diana donated the lead gift for the construction of this YMCA, and we recognized their investment
in civic well-being by naming the new center the Rauner Family YMCA.

Our neediest children, families and communities require our greatest commitment if we’re going to effect
positive change in their lives. It is our responsibility to give them the guidance and instruction that will
nurture their growth.
A responsibility to mentor
Mentoring is woven into the very fiber of the YMCA and is a very large part of our success in achieving our
mission. We can only build strong communities and strong families by building strong kids.
In 2005, we provided formal one-to-one mentoring services for about 200 children through our program. North
Lawndale began offering Teen REACH services to 150 at-risk community youth. Based on the program’s
success, our funding increased and we served an additional 100 youth in Logan Square and Robbins.
When we pair youth with someone they can look up to, we provide them with a mirror that reflects who they
can become. Our children grow alongside strong role models and lean on them for support, encouragement and
advice until they find their own strength and develop strong roots for their growth.
A responsibility to help children grow
Our commitment to children includes proving them with safe, productive alternatives to unsupervised time. We
are involved in their educational experiences, before, during and after school. Through partnerships with the
Chicago Public Schools, 21st Century Community Learning Center and the Chicago Campaign to Expand
Community Schools, the YMCA coordinates academic assistance and hands-on learning activities to benefit
400 children at two schools in Humboldt Park, one in Englewood and one in Maple Park. Additionally, more than
50,000 children participated in our youth sports programs.
A responsibility to increase access
Our compassion for youth extends to families as well. While we encourage health and well-being, we are well
aware of families’ needs and the financial limitations they face. More than 120,000 people belong to our YMCAs
and count on us to strengthen their spirit, mind and body. In 2005, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago
introduced the Income-Based Rate Scale (IBRS) pilot program, which tied membership fees with household
income. We understand that our programs and services need to remain affordable to those that need us most.
While we always have offered financial assistance, IBRS simplifies the process, increasing our ability to respond
to needs. The YMCA is a place where everyone can belong, no matter their income.

Financial Outcomes
The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago reported operating income of $1.5 million for the year ending December 31,
2005 compared to a $2.7 million loss for the year ending December 31, 2004. This is the first time since 2001
that “total public support and revenue” has exceeded expenses. 2005 results were the product of strong
revenue growth, continued expense control and restructuring initiatives that have been implemented over the
past four years.
Total public support and revenue was $83.1 million in 2005, up from $81.0 million in 2004. Growth was favorably
impacted by substantial increases in membership and program fees, which were up 12% and 16% respectively,
or a total increase of $5.2 million. This growth was partially offset by continued pressure on revenue associated
with government funded programs, which was down $ 3.2 million or 14%.
Expense control continued unabated, with total expenses of $81.6 million, down from $83.7 million in 2004.
Total other income, including other comprehensive income, increased by $1.5 million (up 58%) in 2005, to $4.0
million, driven primarily by net gains on investments of $3.7 million. As a result, the Association reported a
change in net assets of $5,485,685 for the year as compared to a change of ($144, 750) for the year ending
December 31, 2004.
Improved income statement results were mirrored by improvements in the Association’s balance sheet. Total
net assets were up by $5.5 million, as total assets increased by $3 million, and total liabilities decreased by $2.5
million. Cash and investments to total debt was 1.13 in 2005 versus 1.11 in 2004.
With 2005’s strong performance, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago has completed the implementation of the
majority of the activities included in its 2002 financial turnaround strategy. The Association entered 2006 on
solid financial footing, committed to further strengthening its financial position so as to ensure the long term
sustainability of its mission.
