BATTLE OF BELIEFS:
ARE PSYCHIC ABILITIES PHSYICALLY POSSIBLE?
---By: John Griffin II
Uini Research – Director / Founder
A constant “battle of beliefs” continues
to rage on in society about whether intuitive consultants, also known as psychics,
are legit or not. People pay hundreds, if not
thousands of dollars in the hopes of learning about their future or connecting with a
lost loved one. Uini Research entered the
“battle”, but from a different perspective.
Rather than acting like children playing the
“I am right” game, we chose to stand back
and hear both sides of the story.
The “believers”, usually within the paranormal field, believe that it is caused by the
collection of energy surrounding the psychic or the psychic feeling the energy vibrations of the client which allows them to
provide the information. I have also learned
from some psychics that I had spoken to
that each one has their own set of “abilities”. Some can hear ghosts, some can see
them and some can feel them. In fact, one
intuitive consultant went as far as to say
that they could hear a dog whistle!
The “skeptics” constantly talk about
4
how it is not physically possible. For the
skeptics, the physics of it all does not make
any sense, especially since a psychic’s explanation involves the absorption of energy. Additionally, the possibility was raised
that the people who are trained as psychics
are trained to read their client based off of
their body language or may have obtained
information about the clients past prior to
the client arriving for their appointment.
Now taking this from a neutral perspective, I took what was said and formed my
own experiment. Did any of you notice anything interesting about what was said to me
from both ends of the spectrum? Let’s analyze both sides. One thing that caught my
attention from the skeptics end is that they
don’t believe it is “physically” possible. On
the believers side, I noticed that each intuitive consultant stated that they “can’t see”
but “can hear” them while others “can see”
them but “not hear” them.
Most scientist today focus on the brain,
because it is believed that this is where the
abilities come from. This may be partially
true, but remember the brain is just the
control center. It sends and receives mes-
Fourth Coast Entertainment Magazine / May 2014
sages from the body and helps the body
perform the task(s) that it is supposed to
do. The brain does not provide us with the
whole story though. Has anyone bothered
to take the time to research how a psychic’s
ears and eyes develop? If the hints about
being able to “see” and “hear” ghosts
didn’t capture your attention, then this next
part will!
The average person at best can only hear
from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. This measurement can usually only be heard by children,
not adults. My hearing is approximately 70
Hz to 17,900 Hz and I am only 27 years
old. As we get older, our hearing frequency
range decreases. Knowing these facts and
stats, I decided to conduct an experiment,
where I would sneak up on an intuitive medium, who claimed she could hear a dog
whistle, and see if she reacts or not. The
results were very interesting! After blowing a 22,000 Hz whistle, which are meant
for a dog’s sensitive ears, she reacted immediately to it. After conducting further
frequency tests that did not involve a dog
whistle, I found that one intuitive medium
could hear above 20,000 Hz and another
medium heard 5 Hz, which is well below
the average hearing range! This could very
well be an indication that psychics could be
legit, but not through the use of magical
abilities, but through an unusual development during their growing cycle.
At this point, Uini Research is continuing its research on intuitive consultants. So
at this point, it is only another theory, but
one that actually has some physical documentation to support the theory rather than
turning to what we like to call the “Hocus
Pocus” theories!

“A Human Condition”
By James Oliver Ryan
Bad or good
No one was ever afraid of a poet
There are dreams a poet dreams
What a poet has is a human condition
Dripping from the seams of reality
To hold thought invoking transtions
There are choice words through visions
Remaking the world
For happiness is in creating life’s themes
For a poet this is a depicted social ambition
It is how a poet feels it is a human condition.
Everything together is within

Looking For a Research Site
Interested In Finding a Location with
Reports of Paranormal Activity
Do you manage or own a property that
has a historical significance to the North
Country? Do you have a site that has reports
of paranormal activity?
The Host of Parascience Journal, George
Stadalski, is looking for sites throughout
the North Country that have reports of paranormal activity and are available for study.
One night of investigation is not enough to
capture real evidence of paranormal activity.
We would like to find locations that would
permit us the opportunity to conduct an
ongoing investigation of the reports of paranormal activity in order to gain a more cyclic
understanding of the activity being experienced.
The building does not need to be actively
6
used; it can even be in a state of disrepair,
as long as it is safe. If we capture any activity at your site, we would be interested in
talking about the possibility of using the site
to hold paranormal investigation workshops
that would include an overnight investigation. This would be a great opportunity for
the property to provide some additional revenue.
If you have a site that you think would
work, please contact George Stadalski at
[email protected] or call him
at (315) 783-9003.
Parascience Journal can be heard
Wednesday evenings at 9:00 PM on the

STOLF’S OLDIES
Ask Cool Daddy Out West
---STOLF
Return with us now to those thrilling days of
yesteryear…as that hornswaggled hombre the Cool
Daddy Kid rounds up some strays...
Dear Cool Daddy: So who had the fastest
draw…really?
According to fast-draw expert Ben Cooper, Hugh
O’Brien (Wyatt Earp) and Clint Eastwood (Rowdy
Yates on Rawhide) were the fastest, and neither was
shy about showing off. Audie Murphy (Whispering
Smith) was also quite proficient. Another trigger tudor to the stars, Arvo Ojala, said that among those
he trained, James Garner (Maverick), Wayde Preston (“a lightening bolt when he draws that Colt .45”
as the song told), and Gunsmoke’s James Arness
were the quickest…in fact, that’s Ojala being gunned
down in the opening of early episodes…OK, he let
Matt win! You might recall that in the late 1950s,
fast-draw and gun-twirling was a recreation, like
scuba diving and golf. Sammy Davis Jr. and Jerry
Lewis were both big on pretend gun-play.
But the acknowledged Hollywood champeen
was a ranch-hand turned actor named Paul “Kilo”
Henderson…he played Clint Travis on 26 Men, the
syndicated saga of the Arizona Rangers. Before
turning to acting, he made a living on the fast-draw
tournament circuit. How fast is fast? From holster to
smoking barrel in a third of a second…now that’s
fast, pardner.
For the record, that “cross draw” set-up, with
the gun in the holster butt forward, isn’t just to look
“fancy.” Whether drawing with the opposite side
hand or the same side, it can be just as fast as a
normal “strong side draw” with the gun butt facing
backwards…and it’s said to be more comfortable
when wearing a gun-belt in a seated position.
Dear Cool Daddy: I recently saw an old Roy
Rogers movie and Dale Evans was riding a palomino, not her buckskin Buttermilk. What gives?
The King of the Cowboys kept a stable a palominos. The original Trigger appeared in all his movies
and on the TV series. Trigger Jr., no relation, was
used for personal appearances, while Little Trigger
was the smartest and knew the most tricks, so he
was used for those scenes. There were also several
stand-ins. In the movies, Dale had no regular mount
and often rode one of the stand-ins, named Pal…
this was also her choice for personal appearances,
and they used Pal in the unsold TV pilot The Dale
Evans Show.
But for Roy’s TV show, they decided not a have 2
palominos, so enter Buttermilk, a light dun with dark
points…who, despite a generation of assumptions
to the contrary, was a stallion not a mare, and as
a quarter horse, was actually faster than any of the
Triggers. There was some talk of using Rex Allen’s
Koko, that stunning dark chocolate horse with the
flaxen male and tail, who was trained by the same
man as Trigger. Koko proved to be too rough for
Dale to handle…as it was, she had to rein in Buttermilk so Trigger would appear to be galloping
“faster”!
Dear Cool Daddy: Weren’t there some odd-ball
Westerns…like one set in Australia?
In defining the TV Western genre, I tend to cast
a pretty wide net. I count any period piece where
folks chase each other around on horse-back…what
was Captain Gallant if not simply Rin Tin Tin shifted
over to Morocco? I would include Swamp Fox, Tales
of the 77th Bengal Lancers, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, William Tell, Sir Lancelot, Ivanhoe, and course
Zorro. Don’t forget Westerns with a contemporary
setting, like Sheriff of Cochise, Fury, Sky King, State
Trooper…in the 1960s Wide Country, Empire, and
Stoney Burke with Jack Lord…and in the 1970s
Cade’s County…in one episode Glenn Ford is after
8
a delusional stick-up man who thinks he’s Billy the
Kid…he tracks him on horseback, “the old fashioned
way.”
The one you’re thinking of was called Whiplash,
starring Peter Graves, before he hooked on with
the Broken Wheel Ranch and Fury. 34 episodes
were filmed on location in Australia in 1959, with
a rousing theme song by Aussie Frank Ifield. Set
in the 1860s, it was the adventures of an American
stagecoach operator down under named Christopher
Cobb…based on the real-life Freeman Cobb. Never
carried a pistol…a rifle sometimes, but usually his
trusty bullwhip got the job done.
In the 1960s, Chuck Connors would try something similar with the ill-fated Cowboy in Africa, remember? Stranger still was Joe King, the “Cowboy
Sahib”…a back-up feature in The Hooded Horseman
comic book in the early 1950s. Yes, the Wild West
transplanted to India…see him ride a Bengal tiger
like a bucking bronco…well, that’s different.
Dear Cool Daddy: With all the Davy Crockett
coonskin caps Disney sold in the Fifties, how did
he miss Daniel Boone in the Sixties?
It’s hard enough to strike merchandising gold
even once, and Walt did it twice, first with Crockett,
then with Zorro…I had the complete outfit, altho my
parents requested I replace chalk-holder on the tip of
the plastic sword with a suction cup, so I wouldn’t
be tempted to Z up the place. He also did OK with
Swamp Fox, Spin & Marty, and the Scarecrow of
Romney Marsh. True, Andy Burnett, Elfego Baca, and
Texas John Slaughter were duds…but they did take
a stab at Daniel Boone, a 4-part TV series in 1960.
Unfortunately, it was a lackluster production,
starting with the lead, an actor named Dewey Martin,
who had all the charisma of a tree stump…BTW a
different Dewey Martin than the drummer with Buffalo Springfield. And Walt went with authenticity, having Ole Dan’l wear a broad-brimmed hat, as he did in
real life…the better to fend off sun and rain, you see.
Raccoon and other critter caps were more for
warmth in the wintertime…entire pelts were used,
sometimes with the head and dangling legs still attached. The real Daniel Boone didn’t like them and
never wore one. There’s evidence Davy Crockett did,
but that’s debated by historians…the only portrait of
him in hunting gear again shows a brimmed hat.
Dear Cool Daddy: So how many TV shows did
Frankie Laine sing the theme song to anyway?
Not as many as you might think. From 19471956, Frankie Laine was one of the most popular
and best-selling vocalists around…even had his own
TV variety show in 1955. He wasn’t associated with
Westerns until his recording of the theme from High
Noon was a chart-topper in 1952. Oddly enough, the
version used in the movie was sung by Tex Ritter.
But this lead to a slew of movie theme gigs…Blowing Wind, Man Without a Star, Strange Lady in Town,
Gunfight at the OK Corral, 3:10 to Yuma, and finally
Bullwhip in 1958.
On TV he sang the iconic Rawhide theme in 1959
and Gunslinger in 1961, and for the Golden Age of
Adult Westerns, that’s it…just 2! Around this time
he also recorded 3 Western-themed LPs, all dressed
up in cowpoke garb. Later there were 2 more for
TV…Tim Conway’s short-lived Texas Rangers spoof
Rango in 1967…and much later, the first season of
the Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo in 1979.
And Blazing Saddles. The fact that he sang Rango
completely “straight” puts the lie to Mel Brooks’ famous story that he didn’t think Laine realized Blazing
Saddles was a satire. I don’t think Laine would or
even could sing it tongue-in-cheek…his style was
his style…and given that he had done Rango, I think
he knew! Till next time, ya ornery galoot...rock on!

The Moose River Band
The Moose River Band was the brainchild of Howie Campbell. After returning to NY from Southern Cal in 1979, Howie
formed a party band with Tom Campbell on drums and Colby Lewis on guitar and vocals. Joe Campbell came up from
Florida to join them playing the Keuka Lake area. At the end of summer Howie, Joe and Colby moved the band to the
Hudson Valley and Connecticut area using various drummers like Edgar Goss, Randy Ciarlante, Marc Giammarco and
Billy Griffiths. In 2009 Howie called the original members and they agreed to a reunion concert in the park in Hammondsport, NY. This year will be their 5th 30+ Reunion in the Hammondsport Park on Thursday August 14 6pm. Drummer
Derrick Johnson replaced Tom Campbell for the past two years.

A new voice has burst on the North Country music scene: Canadian born transplant Josee Allard.
Josee is a singer/ songwriter and a good one. With
family roots in Quebec, via British Columbia, Ms.
Allard mixes a west coast attitude with a hint of a
French accent and lots of bubbly notes and crafty
lyrics. She’s not a folk singer, in the classic sense
of the word, and her newly released CD (this is her
third) mixes pop hooks and grooves with discreet
Jazz meanderings. Her voice is well up to the task of
delivering the songs confidently and joyously. Backing music by producer Pascal Dufour embellishes
the entire recording and Elizabeth Blouin Brathwaite
helps out on percussions and vocals on last song,
Day by Day.
Leading off the recording is “Don’t Get Bent”,
a carefree daytrip to the west coast of Washington
State, and sets the tone for the whole CD. Like Allard
herself, the music is upbeat, friendly, fun. “Sunshine
Inn” follows suite, with more summer beach imag-
ery. The bridge is a winter lament, and then the summer sun returns.
“Chocolate”, beginning with its delicate piano
intro, has the ingredients of a hit song. Were Ms.
Allard not only 30 years old, I‘d swear I heard this
song in a swanky Jekyll Island beachfront night club
35 years ago. Certainly has that sultry feel. “Friend”
is just plain a nice song.
The CD closes with the philosophical “Day By
Day”. On this song, as she does in her live performances, Josee Allard welcomes the listener into her
private world. Maybe she’s too young to be cynical,
maybe it’s a deliberate stand to remain upbeat, but it
all leave you feeling good. My only complaint with
this CD is, with only five songs, it’s too short. Give
us more, Josee Allard.
Josee plays both sides of the border. Her booking is handled by Marie Claude Meunier with mc
music agency at [email protected]

GrassTransit’s unique sound centers
on harmony. Their vibrant vocal arrangements, backed by Rick Williams’
driving mandolin, Ken Alger’s melodic
banjo and Lee Alger’s rhythmic bass,
yield a sound that’s much larger than
expected from a three-piece group.
These lifetime musicians play with a
mature, heartfelt style that lends bluegrass energy and feel to their country,
swing and traditional repertoire.

“I consider my books, my work to be
like the moon: a guiding light from
which to learn, to live, and to share. It is
that light that little cubs will be drawn
to - to learn and to play. Those cubs
will someday grow up to live their own
lives with the foundation of what they
have learned. They are the teachers of
tomorrow, sharing their lessons with
their own cubs, who come to play and
to learn, beneath the love and light of
the moon.”

2. “You,” in 1958. The young doo-wop group was first called

while playing at the Nassau Coliseum in New York.

Jess Novak
Jess Novak is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who performs solo as well as in duos, trios and several full bands (Jess and
The Beards, Master Thieves and The Shining Star Band). Bad Habit,
her debut solo album released Dec. 2013, is a collection of songs cultivated over a year and put down organically as they emerged. What
began as a four-song EP sprung into a full-length 11-song album
as ideas flowed during sessions at Moletrax East in Syracuse with
accomplished sound engineer, Jeff Moleski. Fellow Master Thieves,
Brian Golden and Eric Tozer, also appear on the album providing
guitar and percussion. Recorded between July and October 2013,
the album captures a moment in time, focusing on relationships,
both good and bad, telling the stories with honesty.

Master Thieves
Syracuse-based band, Master Thieves, has evolved into a hard-hitting
rock-n-roll six-piece (sometimes seven) that effortlessly blends the improvisational wizardry of the jam band scene with strong vocal harmonies, tight original arrangements and a passion for live performance.
This eclectic bunch creates music inspired
by a wide variety of influences from Levon Helm, Jimi Hendrix, Galactic, Grateful
Dead and Bonnie Raitt.

Dark Hollow
http://darkhollowmusic.com
Dark Hollow is CNYs premier Grateful Dead
tribute band. Born in Syracuse in 1996 out of
the remnants of SAMMY Hall of Fame Grateful
Dead Tribute act Homel-Alaniz, bassist David
“Ese” Alaniz joined the ranks with lead guitarist
Mike Vincitore. Alaniz had just finished some collaborative efforts with New Riders of the Purple
Sage alumni and friend of the late Jerry Garcia,
David Nelson, when asked to join DH. Since then,
Alaniz and Vincitore have shared the stage with
members of the Grateful Dead. Unfortunately, Ese
passed away in 2009. The rest of Dark Hollow is
carrying on the Dead traditions.
The band is currently manned by Vincitore on
lead guitar, Matt Sandford on guitar and vocals,
Mikey Callaghan on keys, Aaron Fried on bass,
and Jeff Roney of Drums.

GAME CONNOISSEUR
2014 PAX East Roundup
---Dr. Anthony Betrus,
the Game Connoisseur
with John Payton, Vice President of the
Potsdam Video Gaming Club
Each spring Penny Arcade holds a gaming expo in Boston covering console
games, pc games, and tabletop games.
PAX East, as it is commonly referred to,
is the largest gaming convention on the
east coast. This year the Potsdam Video
Gaming Club (PVGC) sent 20 students
to the convention, which was held April
11th through 13th at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The convention is an opportunity for the press, fans,
and general public to get a taste of upcoming game releases. With the help of
PVGC vice president John Payton, we’ll
be going through a list of some of the
more noteworthy titles from this year’s
convention.
1) Evolve (4th Quarter, 2014) - Turtle
Rock Studios, who developed the Left 4
Dead series, has created a next gen (Xbox
One, PS4, PC) co-op shooter. John had a
chance to play this game, where he took
control of the “beast,” while four opponents were pitted against him. He started
off as a hulking ape-like behemoth, which
boasts a basic skill-tree and leveling up
system. His four opponents played the
roles of medic, trapper, assault, and support. The emphasis is on teamwork and
strategy vs. brute force and aggression,
and every game plays out as more-orless a boss battle.
2) Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (Fall
2014 - Xbox 360, PS3, and PC) - Gearbox Software will be expanding the Borderlands universe with a “pre-sequel”
that takes place in-between Borderlands
1 and 2. The story takes place on Elpis,
Pandora’s low gravity moon, where there
is no natural oxygen. Built into the gameplay will be oxygen acquisition and storage. Weapons continue to be the core of
the Borderlands experience, and plans
are in place to add cryo and laser weapon
types. At this point there are four playable characters: Wilhelm, Athena, Nisha,
and Claptrap.
3) Lichdom: Battlemage (PC early access now on Steam) - Indie game developers Xaviant has licensed CryEngine 3,
and have produced a gorgeous fantasy
fps. Essentially they have taken the mage
from Skyrim and put him front and cen-

ter. They eliminated the traditional mana
system, allowing for a more powerful
mage experience. Spellcrafting allows for
traditional fire, ice, and eight additional
spell categories. Basic spell attributes
are modified by essences of the enemies
you defeat.
4) Wolfenstein: The New Order (May
20, 2014 - Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3,
PS4, PC) - This is the first title from the
Swedish game development studio MachineGames. The game is set in 1960 in
an alternate universe where the Nazi’s
were victorious. Current emphasis is on
the single player experience, with nazi
robots and super soldiers among your
enemies.
5) Dawngate, Heroes of the Storm,
and DC Infinite Crisis: New MOBAs on
The Block (PC) - PAX East may have been
the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) coming out party. League of Legends
is currently the dominant MOBA among
both casual and professional gamers, although Defense of the Ancients 2 (DOTA
2) and Heroes of Newerth (HON) are
two competitors, especially in e-sports.
Predictably, the big hitters Electronic
Arts (Dawngate), Blizzard (Heroes of
the Storm), and DC (Infinite Crisis) are
weighing in with their own titles.
6) Star Citizen (PC) - Chris Roberts
and his independent startup Cloud Imperium Games are working on this spiritual successor to the Wing Commander
series. There are nearly 35,000 backers
and over $2,000,000 supporting his new
Space combat simulator. Perhaps the
biggest media event at PAX East showed
a live demo of the the game, which featured realistic starship inertia and pilot
blackouts. Additional features include a
FPS component that allows you to board
and take over enemy capital ships, as
well as a persistent universe. With all
of the hype surrounding this game, let’s
hope that he can deliver.
All in all PAX East was a great fan experience, and again did not fail to impress.
Along with the strong lineup of large developer releases, there was also a strong
indie game presence. It is in these generally smaller scale games that some of the
more innovative and interesting concepts
are featured. The games listed above are
only a small sample, so whatever your
tastes, you have plenty of reason to be
excited about what is to come.
