Steinbeck Plaque (08) - Missouri Press Association
(1929-2005)
David W. Steinbeck
Publisher in Canton, MO, 1968 to 2005. Worked at a newspaper in Illinois in the late 1940s through the mid-1950s,
and for Stars and Stripes in the military. Bought the Canton
Press-News and the Lewis County Journal in 1968, merging
them five years later into the Press-News Journal. Winner of
many state and national awards. Among Missouri’s first
newspapers to use personal computers for news writing and
typesetting. He practiced media convergence before anyone
called it that, starting a telephone news line, Dial News,
producing news for local access television, publishing
"extra" editions when necessary, and using spray paint to
put color in his newspaper. Active in his church, in community
organizations, and at Culver-Stockton College, he offered
Canton residents splashes of culture, establishing the
Canton Festival Theatre in 1966 and managing the Golden
Eagle Showboat for 20 years.
