Dr. Steven Chin, (photo credit "USAID/LACoFD") Wow! Talk about High Energy...I recently had lunch with Dr. Steven Chin, to learn more about his passion for emergency preparedness and response. Sandra Shields, Program Manager, DHV Surge Unit Register Now! Los Angeles County Disaster Healthcare Volunteers Conference! Have You Reserved Your It was a zeal that began for him as a teenager in Long Island, New York, where he volunteered as a First Responder. After heading west for college and earning a degree in Molecular Biology with honors from the California Institute of Technology in 1982, Dr. Chin, inspired by the 1970's television show "Emergency!", decided to become a physician. He subsequently entered the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, then completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at the Los Angeles County, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1990. Dr. Chin is currently an Emergency Medicine Physician practicing at PIH Health Hospital, Whittier and has been a Flight Physician for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He is also an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) physician instructor and a Medical Team Manager of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, CA TF-2, sponsored by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Designated as a United Nations Heavy Rescue Space for Our 2015 Annual Surge Unit Conference? The annual Surge Unit conference is on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Luminarias Restaurant in Monterey Park. The theme will be Earthquake Preparedness for Healthcare Professionals. The program will feature three dynamic speakers: Dr. Erin Burkett from USGS; Dr. Steven Chin, Emergency Room and Urban Search and Rescue Physician; and Jeanne O'Donnell from the County Office of Emergency Management. The deadline to sign up to attend the 2015 LA County Surge Unit Conference is close of business on Thursday, June 18, 2015. Remember... Registration is required. Team, the task force travels internationally, and is specifically trained for the dangerous job of breaching reinforced concrete to rescue victims. Dr. Chin's deployments have included the Oklahoma City bombing (1995), the Atlanta Olympics (1996), the Sri Lanka tsunami (2005), Hurricane Katrina (2006), the Haitian earthquake (2010), the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake (2011), and the Japan earthquake and tsunami (2011). "Haiti," Dr. Chin states, "was the most poignant, because Haiti was laid flat as far as the eye could see. You could see the bodies everywhere." Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Chin has been married 20 years and has two beautiful daughters. Interestingly, the Chins count the children's birthdays by disasters. The tsunami and the New Zealand earthquake fell near one daughter's birthday, while Katrina and 9/11 overlapped the other's. You will all have the opportunity to meet Dr. Chin when he presents at our upcoming Disaster Healthcare Volunteer conference on Saturday June 27, 2015. Dr. Chin will discuss the medical management of earthquake victims and crush injuries. Please join us to hear this dynamic speaker and humanitarian. Sign up for this event right now by: 1. "SurgeWorld Trainer" A Triage Learning Platform SurgeWorld Trainer is a web-based pediatric triage learning platform designed to enhance the triage skills of any who dare to play. The project was developed by Children's Hospital Los Angeles in collaboration with LA County Emergency Medical Services Agency. Funding was provided through the Hospital Preparedness Program. SurgeWorld will especially benefit clinicians who are unaccustomed to caring for a large number of pediatric victims. Unlike many videogames where the purpose is to kill, the purpose of this videogame is to live. The goal is simple - to improve the Pediatric Triage skills of any healthcare provider. SurgeWorld Trainer has two modules: triage and logistics. Each has a training mode to support the practitioner in understanding how to operate each module. The training mode reviews the principles of START and JumpSTART triage. In the 'triage' module, the practitioner must quickly triage patients into one of four categories--green, yellow, red or black. The practitioner is guided along the algorithm for START and JumpSTART and is provided immediate feedback to foster self-improvement within only a few rounds. In the 'logistics' mode, the practitioner is challenged to prioritize resources that are available: space, staff, and stuff. This form of web-based learning is the wave of the future. It provides an innovative way to teach, learn and acquire knowledge. So keep you eyes open for SurgeWorld Trainer, scheduled for release this summer.
