From the Principal
Welcome
To all members of the PCACS
community, welcome, as we start
another term.
Perhaps the
busiest, at least it is within the
Senior School.
Although we said farewell to a
number of students and their
families last term, always a sad
occurrence; we did welcome 13
new students and their families to
the School this term.
We
currently have 813 students
attending the School and it is
likely we will start 2014 with
approximately 900. This is a
particularly important milestone
to reach as it will place us in the
mature school bracket.
Our first week back, at least from
my perspective, was very good.
The students settled into their
routines quickly and with little
difficulty. On my tours of the
School it was evident that
classrooms were very productive
and full of smiling (relatively)
happy students and teachers.
Student Achievements
Last term two of our students
attended the iWomen Project
conducted by the Kwinana
Industries Council (KIC).
This
project involved 20 students from
12 schools undertaking a course
that provided them with insight
into the role of women in
industry through presentations by
women leaders, visits to various
sites and personal development
training experiences.
Our two students, Katelyn Abbott
and Sarah Mullen performed
extremely well and have been
selected as iWomen Ambassadors
to assist in the training and
development of those students
that will attend the next project.
Congratulations Katelyn and
Sarah.
Student Absences
Recently the School has received
a lot of requests for students to
be absent during term time to
attend family holidays. Whilst it is
understood that on occasion
there can be justifiable reasons to
take children out of School, it
needs to be in exceptional
circumstances. With two weeks
off at the completion of every
term there are numerous
opportunities to arrange holidays
that don’t impact on students
progression academically.
Whilst it is always a parents
prerogative to take their child out
of School; they must give due
consideration to the laws relating
to attendance at School and
truancy. The School maintains
records of student attendance
and repeated absences during
term time will be addressed and
parents asked to demonstrate the
need for such absences.
Absences during term time have a
detrimental effect on the
academic progress of students
which may result in difficulties in
their selection of subjects later
on.
Examination Absences
Of particular concern is absences
in the lead up to and conduct of
examinations which occur in the
Senior School this term.
The School policy is that all
students are to write their
examinations
during
the
specified examination period.
The only exception to this will
be for students who are able to
provide a medical certificate for
illness or injury. Students who
are absent from examinations
for non-medical reasons will be
awarded zero (0) for the
examination and this will be
reflected in their overall grade.
The suggestion that staff can
write separate examinations to
cater for students taking
holidays during term time is
neither reasonable nor fair and
will not be carried out at PCACS.
Parents electing to remove their
children need to carefully
consider the impact of their
decision on their child’s
academic progress.

Introducing Mr Singh-Science Teacher
“The only constant in life is
change”
(Heraclitus–Greek Philosopher).
A profound paradox that has
remained apt since it was
uttered around 500 BC. This is a
philosophy that I have imbibed
in my quest to define the meaning of my existence. It is only
through change that progress and growth can be achieved.
This is a common thread even in the evolution of the life.
I was born and grew up in a country where it was not until
my early adult life that that “all men were equal but some
men were more equal than others” ( adapted from George
Orwell – Animal Farm) prevailed.
This was the Apartheid Regime in South Africa. I still recall
some clear images of signposts that were located at
entrances to some beaches, parks, restrooms and others. It
read “Whites Only”.
Growing up I often wondered what was the big plan for
being in this country during this era. It was not deep into my
adult life that the realisation of my presence there dawned
upon me. It was the day the entire nation sat glued to the
television and watched the events of Nelson’s Mandela’s
release from prison unfold. It was a truly momentous
occasion. He represented for the nation a catalyst for
change and the emancipation of the human spirit. He was
nothing short of a real life Superhero. He epitomised the
“Freedom Fighter” label. For me though it was not so much
the fighter in him that inspired me but instead it was the
peace.
His experiences had not rendered him bitter, revengeful or
resentful. He was an embodiment of the Christ Principle unconditional love and forgiveness. A fairy tale story, well
almost but not with the ending “and they lived happily ever
after”. The struggle still continues.
As a teacher of Science, I believe that my key role is to
inspire, and develop in the students a passion for the
sciences. For it is passion that drives us to greatness. So I
thought that the best lesson that I could deliver was to be a
role model. Out of human interaction and activity, passion
is born.
The challenges, experiences and opportunities I have had
since arriving in Australia a year ago and teaching at Peter
Carnley Anglican Community School has accelerated my
growth. Migration can be a an emotionally daunting
experience for one who leaves behind a lifetime of
relationships. The doubts of having made a wise choice
stealthily innervates the mind. I had a strange epiphany
recently and I think that annihilated any shadows of doubt.
I observed the love that people have for their pets and
animals. It is clearly evident from the common sight of
walking the dog, the number of vet hospitals and pet
insurances that people have. Then I remembered a quote
by Mahatma Ghandi which said “ The greatness of a nation
can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I knew
then that I have joined a great nation.
I look forward to quality interactions with the PCACS
community and hope to inspire and be inspired.

We're here....unscathed and all present!
This morning went very smoothly, with everyone arriving on time, checking in and making it
through security with only one pair of nail scissors being taken away. The wait at the airport
flew by and we boarded with students still stuffing their faces with any food they could purchase
(although I'm quite sure they all had just had breakfast?)……….

Nominations for Round 18 of the LyriK Awards are now open!

Chaplains Chat
Anglicare – Street Connect Bus
On Wednesday 31 July the Senior School Chapel had a visit from
the Anglicare Street Connect Bus and one of the Youth Workers for
Street Connect, Esben Kass-Sorenson, spoke to the Chapel about
youth homelessness in Perth and the work that Anglicare’s Street
Connect do in helping the young people who find themselves living
on the streets, through a variety of reasons. All students and staff
were kept spell bound as they listened to Esben share about his
work with the homeless of Perth for over 10 years now. Many of
the stories of people he had dealt with were heart wrenching.
The Anglicare Ambassadors for Peter Carnley ACS, Taylor Sofield,
Emily Judd, Madosyn Watson and Jacob Topperwein will be
collecting money for the Street Connect Bus. This is to purchase
Health Packs that are distributed to the homeless and if we raise
enough money to also buy some sleeping bags for distribution to
the homeless.
Please support the Anglicare Ambassadors to support the
homeless of Perth through Anglicare’s Street Connect Bus, with a
donation. You can give the money to Taylor, Emily, Madosyn or
Jacob who will be collecting over the next week, or to Father David.

Mobile Phone Safety
Mobile phones are becoming more prevalent in
today’s society.
With this comes great
responsibility for teenagers as phones are no
longer just a device to make phone calls. They
have the ability to take photos, play games, send
text messages, send images and access the
internet. It is important for parents and their
children to understand the potential risks involved
in owning and using mobile phones. The risks can
include high bills, scams, cyberbullying,
unwelcome calls/texts, sexting and access to
inappropriate material.
Tips for parents:

Stay involved with your child’s use of new
technologies.

Find out how access to the internet and
other services can be managed.

Help your child to understand that their
phone is like a wallet and every text, call or
download costs money.

Remind your child that they shouldn’t let
anyone borrow their phone.

Talk with your child about their experiences
with their mobile phone.

Teach your child that there are ways they
can deal with disturbing material.
Tips for children and teenagers:

Never post your number or other
personal details on the internet or
share it with anybody you don’t know.

Be wary of anyone who asks to
borrow your phone in public, even if
it’s for a supposed emergency

If you receive a text message from an
unknown source, don’t reply.

Stay aware of what’s going on around
you and guard your privacy.
Remember, if you can take pictures of
everything and everyone with your
phone, so can others.

Be considerate; only send the kinds of
messages and photos you would be
happy to receive.

Tell your parents or another trusted
adult if someone sends you unkind or
bullying messages, or asks you to do
something that makes you feel
uncomfortable.

Art with Miss Acton
Students in Year 4 have been learning about the life and artwork of French artist Claude
Monet. In particular they have been examining his painting techniques and brushwork.
Students have been painting their own water gardens based on Monet’s artwork.
Claude Monet was an Impressionist artist and one of the most important painters of the 19 th
and 20th centuries. His garden and waterlily pond at his home in Giverny inspired him to paint
beautiful landscape paintings.

P&F News
I can’t believe we are in Winter term already. This term, the P&F will be busy with 2 sport carnivals and the Father’s Day breakfast.
The Father’s Day breakfast will be held on Thursday 29 August at 7.30am. A nice early start for dads to bring their children to school and enjoy a hot
egg and bacon (and cheese) subway. Over the past few years, there has been a fantastic turn out of fathers and to see the excitement on the faces
of the children with ‘their’ dad at school is wonderful. The order forms for the breakfast will be coming out shortly and we look forward to seeing
lots of fathers taking part.
The sport carnivals are held at the Wellard Oval and are over a full day. Notes to the Senior school went out this week and Mr Weddikkara has
already placed a request in the note for morning tea type goodies for the P&F to sell on the day. We also will require parent help in serving at the
Wellard Oval canteen and would welcome anybody who could volunteer their time for either the Senior or Junior carnival. Please contact me if you
can help with this fun day. You also get a chance to see your child participate in their event. Watch out for notes and emails for volunteers over the
next few weeks. Thank you in advance.
