PAGE 2 New Student Council Representatives By: Grace Conick, 7th grade On Thursday September 4th, the 5-7th graders elected their new Student Council representatives for the year: Fifth grade - Hannah Siegmund and Sammy Bowes Sixth grade - Elizabeth Johnson and Casey Mull Seventh grade - Madison Synowiec and Jack Reilly. The new Student Council representatives are elected to serve and help others. The representatives are responsible for letting you know what the homework for the day is, representing your class for special events or occasions, and helping around the school in a variety of ways. The main jobs that they do are, watering the plants, raising and lowering the flags, and collecting the recycling. These studentleaders were inducted into the Student Council at Mass on September 17th. Middle School Movie Night On September 5th, the teachers organized a movie night for the sixth through eighth grades. The movie was Chasing Mavericks. It was a true story about a surfer who wanted to ride a “maverick,” which is a giant wave. I wasn’t able to go, but I do know some students and faculty that went. Grace Conick, from 7th grade, said, “It was By: Kerri Ervin, 7th grade awesome because I got to hang out with my friends and watch an amazing movie that ended my summer perfectly.” The students enjoyed refreshments of pretzels, chips, popcorn, and soda or water. Mr. Costante also passed out popsicles before the movie ended. Judging from what I heard, it was a great time for everyone. From the Principal—We Live in Penguin Nation With the addition of nearly 35 new students and 8 new staff members this year, there is a certain different feel to the 2014-2015 school year. And yet even with all that is new, the distinctive elements that make our community unique have remained. While we continue to schedule weekly mass, this year we have returned to celebrating Liturgy on Wednesday’s as an entire school community. And while we continue to challenge our middle school students with rigorous courses, this year we offer Algebra II as part of our advanced academic track for an assigned group of 8th grade students. And while we haven’t yet begun construction on the parish center classrooms, we did bid a fond farewell to the portable classrooms that rested on our school parking lot for nearly ten years. And finally, though each year may bring inevitable changes to the landscape of PENGUIN NATION, one thing remains the same, PENGUIN PRIDE Lives Here! SEPTEMBER 29, 2014 PAGE 3 Math and Reading Carnival By: Cassidy Compton 6th During the reading carnival kids ran around with their prayer partners playing tons of fun games. There was a bounce house which was a lot of fun for both the older and younger kids. One of the biggest hits there was the Donut eating contest! Some kids even got balloons to play with. There was also a marshmallow game where you got chopsticks and put as many marshmallows that you could in a small container in a minute. There was even a face paint station! If you wanted you could have a balloon racing contest where you try to be first to the end of the string. Oh and don’t forget the snacks! If you wanted you could finish your day with refreshing drink and a bag of popcorn. Silver and gold are the most popular colors for jewelry to accessorize with. Here at school, you are allowed to wear religious jewelry but only one piece that is not religious. Mrs. Traum was wearing black cross earrings. You can wear cross earrings like Mrs. Traum and cross bracelets and cross necklaces. Your jewelry colors could be blue, pink, gold, or silver. All colors would look great, but not orange. Sorry, people who love the color orange, but it just doesn’t go with the uniform. However, if orange is your color, it might look good on you. You can wear a lot of items with crosses, even more than necklaces and bracelets and earrings. For instance, pins, rings or anklets could be your choice.
