Hastings lifts the curtain of the world stage to reveal the devastating greed, waste, and failure surrounding this unwinnable war. In June 2010, Michael Hastings published an article in Rolling Stone that made headlines around the world: In “The Runaway General,” he reported on a week he spent in Europe with General Stanley McChrystal, the revered soldier in charge of the war in Afghanistan. McChrystal and his staff ’s unguarded remarks about the White House, our allies and the conduct of the war led President Obama to order McChrystal to the Oval Office, where he was fired unceremoniously. While Hastings’ reporting won him a prestigious Polk award and led to two Pentagon investigations, there is much more to his story than the indiscretions of Stanley McChrystal. In The Operators, Hastings, formerly the Baghdad bureau chief for Newsweek, takes the reader behind the diplomatic façades, to the latenight bull sessions of senior military advisors, to the bars of exotic hotels where highpriced hookers and spies troll to paint a picture of nation-building gone awry. Hastings also takes us on patrol missions in Afghanistan, where he is embedded with American troops, and witnesses firsthand the madness, horror, and existential contradictions of Afghanistan. The Operators combines the acute reportage of a Sebastian Junger with the mad energy of a Michael Herr—it is the painful, powerful tale of a war that can never and will never be won. ✦ “The Runaway General,” the Rolling Stone article that prompted the firing of General McChrystal and changed the course of the war in Afghanistan, was viewed as a journalistic coup and made Hastings an international journalistic star. ✦ The war in Afghanistan is now the longest in American history. With the planned U.S. withdrawal scheduled to start 2012, the issues raised by The Operators will be a focal point of the presidential campaign and Hastings will be an in-demand guest. 2 J A N UA R Y 2012 NONFICTION 978-0-399-15988-6 $27.95 ($29.50 CAN) 320 PAGES 6x9 illustrated with black-and-white photos Export rights: USCOM AGENT: THE WYLIE AGENCY Audio: blue rider press A l s o ava i l a b l e a s a n e - b o o k • National publicity • National television interviews out of New York and D.C. • National radio tour • Newspaper, magazine, and online features and reviews • Targeted online marketing P r a i s e f o r m i c ha e l has t i n g s “The most impact-laden story of the year . . . written by a perfect specimen of the new breed of journalist-commentator.” —Barrett Brown, Vanity Fair “An impressive feat of journalism by a Washington outsider who seemed to know more about what was going on in Washington than most insiders did.” —Frank Rich, The New York Times “It is nothing but exceptionally refreshing to find a writer and a magazine willing to go against the corporate grain.” © Glenn Moody •Author video Michael Hastings is a contributing editor to Rolling Stone. Simon Doonan knows that when it comes to style, the gays are the chosen people. A second anthropological truth comes to him midway through half a turkey burger with no bun at an otherwise hetero barbecue: Do the straight people have any idea how many calories are in the guacamole? In this hilarious discourse and guide to the well-lived life, Doonan goes far beyond the secrets to eating like the French—he proves that gay men really are French women, from their delight in fashion to their brilliant choices in accessories and decor to their awe-inspiring ability to limit calorie intake. A Gucci-wearing Margaret Mead at heart, Doonan offers delightful insights about what makes gay men driven to live every day feeling their best, and reveals that they have just as much—and possibly better—advice and inspiration beyond the same old diet and exercise tips. So, put down that bag of Pirate’s Booty and pick up this fierce and fabulous book. From slimming jaunts through Capri in the evening to a Weight Watchers meeting in downtown Manhattan to an intrepid “Bear” hunt (if you have to ask, you have to read this book and find out for yourself), Gay Men Don’t Get Fat is the ultimate approach to a glamorous lifestyle—and you are guaranteed to laugh away the pounds! ✦ French Women Don’t Get Fat was a surprise New York Times bestseller and has sparked many similar books—but until now no one has thought of this hilarious and sharp send-up. ✦ In addition to stints on Iron Chef America and America’s Next Top Model, Model, Doonan has appeared everywhere in the media to promote his previous books, including NPR, CBS Sunday Morning, Morning, and a slew of fashion and entertainment magazines. Famed Hollywood screenwriter and novelist Delia Ephron delivers a funny, poignant, and memorable Thelma & Louise for our time. Three women on the run take refuge in a roadside nightclub and come face-to-face with a lion. One’s a runaway bride and kleptomaniac, one’s a recovering alcoholic, and one’s a minister’s wife who’s been made to believe she has no imagination. Oh yeah, and the lion, Marcel, is a retired circus performer. Waitressing in the club, the women come to feel right at home as they navigate the back roads of the human heart. When their pasts catch up with them, they have to decide if they’re willing to fight for the strange, charmed life they’ve made with Marcel. Told with Ephron’s signature witty dialogue and lovable characters, The Lion Is In is a truly unforgettable story about friendship, love, and learning how to salsa with the king of the jungle. ✦ Ephron is associated with some of the finest romantic comedies of our generation (Sleepless in Seattle, Seattle, You’ve Got Mail). Mail). ✦ Delia Ephron and her sister Nora have enjoyed recent media exposure thanks to their co-written and produced Love, Loss, and What I Wore Wore,, which has been playing off-Broadway (and around the country) for almost two years. The rotating cast has included Rosie O’Donnell, Fran Drescher, Jane Lynch, and Kristin Chenoweth. ✦ A delightful read that’s perfect as a Mother’s Day gift or a beach read. | Clayton surprises Tracee and Rita when they are investigating the kitchen, hunting for something more substantial than a bar snack. “Hands up,” he says. Tracee screams, which makes him laugh. “What are you doing here?” he asks. “Who are you?” says Rita. “I own the place. That’s my refrigerator you’re snooping in.” “Our car broke down. We needed shelter,” says Rita. “I hope you don’t mind.” By way of an answer, Clayton blows his nose. He fights an endless battle with allergies, which are much worse in spring and the beginning of summer. His pale blue eyes water. He’s in the neighborhood of fifty, although he could be a lot older and he could be younger. Hard to tell because he lost interest in maintenance years ago. His appearance suggests that he fell out of bed and dressed in the dark in his usual, sweatpants and a sweatshirt. His gray hair, unkempt, sticks up in points. He frequently runs his hands through it backwards and forwards. He needs a shave. The fact that he’s a slob relaxes Tracee. She couldn’t articulate that, doesn’t exactly know why he doesn’t seem like a threat—someone who might care about who she is and why she’s here— but the reason is that he’s too much of a mess. “Your lion destroyed my veil.” EXCERPT 6 m ay 2012 FICTION 978-0-399-15848-3 $24.95 ($26.50 CAN) 285 pages 6x9 Export rights: E00 agent: Janklow & Nesbit associates Audio: Penguin Audio A l s o ava i l a b l e a s a n e - b o o k • National publicity • Newspaper, magazine, and online features and reviews •Local publicity out of New York, Los Angeles, and cities TBD • Targeted online marketing © Patricia Williams •Author video P r a i s e f o r D e l i a Eph r o n “The trademark Ephron mixture of tenderness and humor makes Big City Eyes a delightful escape.” —USA Today “Compassionate, funny and tremendously satisfying.” Delia Ephron is a bestselling author and screenwriter. Think The Hunchback of Notre Dame meets The Silence of the Lambs, as told to Justin Cronin. Meet Marc Rochat, a man-child who has devoted his life to being the bell ringer at the Gothic Lausanne Cathedral, one of the great architectural structures in the world. Eerie things have been going on in and around his church, including tremblings in the underground crypt and a variety of gruesomely murdered bodies showing up in nearby streets. Across the square from the cathedral lives Katherine Taylor, a beautiful young American woman who is making phenomenal money as one of the highest-priced call girls in Switzerland; she’s a bit too introspective for her own good, and, unfortunately, much too observant of her clients’ peccadilloes. Their lives collide with Jay Harper, a British private eye who has been sent to investigate the killings and other strange doings; alas, he has no memory of who hired him or precisely why he was chosen for the job. And now all the clues are pointing skyward, where fallen angels are said to haunt Lausanne. ✦ The first in a thrilling new series that incorporates many addictive qualities of recent bestsellers we’re calling a “mystical noir-thriller.” ✦ Steele’s background as a seasoned war journalist shines through in the gritty, haunting, and beautifully written battle scenes. His sense of place is also very strong; the environment has the force of character. ✦ Angels. Supernatural murders. Page-turning action. A perfect bestseller formula. EXCERPT | Harper sat in the dirt, staring at the burning candle in his hands. Almost trembling with excitement before reminding himself it was only the phantom of a dead man. Or maybe it was something else. The earth under these stones was sacred to our kind, Gabriel had said. Didn’t know why, couldn’t know why. Been sent to this place two and a half million years ago. Lost all contact with the creator. As if the creator himself had disappeared, and they were truly a pack of lost angels. Hiding in the forms of men for so long that all memory of where they had come from and what they were was gone. And the only knowledge they had of themselves was from the legends and myths and religions of men. 8 J u n e 2012 fiction 978-0-399-15874-2 $26.95 ($28.50 CAN) 560 pages 6x9 Export rights: G12 agent: capel & Land First Serial: Blue rider press Audio: Penguin Audio A l s o ava i l a b l e a s a n e - b o o k • National publicity • Newspaper, magazine, and online features and reviews • National advertising campaign • National radio giveaway promotions • Major web portal for series • Targeted online marketing © www.emo-photo.com •Author video Praise for Jon Steele “Damn good . . . a great first novel.” — SFX magazine “The most authentic literary re-creation of the hollow terror, confusion and soul-crushing cacophony of battle I have read in decades.” — London Evening Standard on War Junkie Jon Steele worked as an awardwinning cameraman for Independent Television News for more than twenty years, traveling and working through seventy-eight countries across six continents. The Leaderless Revolution is a call to action for you, for me—everyone. It is an extraordinarily bold book that argues that rather than relying on failing political and economic systems to effect change, individual citizens must promulgate change themselves. The message of this book applies not only to the down-trodden in the developing world (including those countries embracing the Arab Spring) but also to those in industrialized nations like the United States. P r a i s e f o r Ca r n e r o ss “So bold, so full of incontestable truths and overwhelming convictions, that it should be read by every diplomat, politician, and thinking citizen with the courage to pick it up.” —John le Carré “Carne Ross takes up where Naomi Klein, Noreena Hertz and others left off. This is an impassioned, idealistic critique of the state of global politics and the deepening rift between those with power and those without.” —The Guardian ✦ Following the Arab Spring, this book comes at a time when there is a lot of interest in mass participation and the remaking of power systems. ✦ Given the economic downturn and diminished place of the United States in the international stage, Americans must start looking to other agents of change. Swimming Studies is a brilliantly original, meditative memoir that oscillates between the worlds of competitive and recreational swimming. From training for the Olympic trials as a teenager to sampling and enjoying pools and beaches across the world as an adult, Shapton offers a fascinating glimpse into the private realms of swimming. Writing as a contender rather than a champion, she tells an intimate story of suburban adolescence, family ties, and the solitary underwater moments that now ground her artistic discipline. In the tradition of bestselling books on running—What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Once a Runner—Shapton’s emphasis is on the smaller moments of athletic pursuit over the single-minded goal of winning. A sui generis collection of written and visual sketches, Swimming Studies is bound to delight athletes and amateurs alike. Baker Weaving together true historical events with infamous conspiracy theories, The Empty Glass is a riveting, paranoiac thriller narrated by the young coroner who is among the first on scene at Marilyn Monroe’s bungalow when the actress is reported dead. In the early-morning hours of August 5, 1962, Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner Ben Fitzgerald arrives at the home of the world’s most famous movie star, now lying naked on her bed, still clutching a telephone. There he discovers The Book of Secrets—Marilyn’s diary—revealing a doomed love affair with a man she refers to only as “The General.” In the following days, Ben unravels a wide-ranging cover-up in the aftermath of the star’s “suicide” and some heartbreaking truths about the fragile, luminous woman behind the celebrity. Soon the sinister and surreal accounts in The Book of Secrets bleed into Ben’s own life, and he finds himself, like Monroe, trapped in a deepening conspiracy. The Empty Glass is an unforgettable combination of the real-life facts and legendary theories that have dogged Monroe, the Kennedys, the Mafia, and even the CIA for decades—and an exciting debut from a remarkable new thriller writer to watch. And to make sure she stayed on that path, her mother, Helen Williams, gave her a list of things that she should never— ever—do. Near the top of that list was “never ever pose nude for anyone.” So when Vanessa became the first African-American woman to win the title of Miss America in September 1983 (an accomplishment that she never planned for or desired), only to be forced to resign ten months later due to a nude photo scandal, the lives of both Vanessa and Helen took an unexpected turn. But Vanessa survived this setback, and many others to come, to enjoy a thirty-plus-year career as an award-winning singer and actress. Vanessa has been asked to write her memoir many times, but only now—with the help of her mother—is she ready to tell her story. Vanessa grew up in Millwood, New York, part of one of the town’s only black families. As a teenager, Vanessa defied Helen, flirting with boys, drinking, and smoking pot. But despite their early conflicts, Helen has always ardently protected her daughter, staying in contact with the FBI about the multiple death threats Vanessa received after being crowned and being there for her during the dissolution of her two marriages. Now the mother of four children, Vanessa describes how she’s made it through the ups and downs of her life as well as her career. Jointly written by Vanessa and Helen and filled with dozens of personal family photos and mementos, You Have No Idea is an empowering celebration of the love between a mother and daughter and the life of a woman who beat the odds to achieve her destiny. ✦ Published in time for Mother’s Day ✦ Vanessa Williams has a fan base that crosses generational, racial, and cultural divides. Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle Rachel Dratch In this side-splitting memoir, the former Saturday Night Live star recounts the hilarious adventures and unexpected joy of dating and becoming a mother when she least expected it—at the age of forty-four. Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as “Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians.” Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog-sitting, learning Spanish—and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose? Resigned to childlessness but still hoping for romance, Dratch was out for drinks with a friend when she met John. Handsome and funny, after only six months of dating long-distance, he became the inadvertent father of her wholly unplanned, undreamed-of child, and moved to New York to be a dad. With riotous humor, Dratch recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and the awkwardness of a baby-care class where the instructor kept tossing out the f-word. Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch’s time on SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar is a refreshing version of the “happily ever after” story that proves female comics—like bestsellers Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler—are truly having their moment. ✦ Dratch spent seven seasons on Saturday Night Live and is best known for characters like Debbie Downer and Boston Teens Sully and Denise (with costar Jimmy Fallon), as well as a wicked Calista Flockhart impersonation. 18 m ay 2012 MEMOIR/HUMOR 978-1-592-40711-8 $26.00 ($27.50 CAN) 240 PAGES 5½x8¼ black-and-white PHOTOS throughout Export rights: W00 AGENT: PARADIGM FIRST SERIAL, UK, TRANSLATION: gotham books A l s o ava i l a b l e a s a n e - b o o k a l s o ava i l a b l e f r o m p e n g u i n a u d i o S i m u lta n e o u s r e l e a s e r e a d b y Ra c h e l d r atc h U n a b r i d g e d D i g i ta l O n ly • 9 h o u r s 978-1-10-156437-0 • $29.95 ($31.50 c a n ) • National television interviews • Newspaper and magazine features •Radio tour • National author tour •Blog campaign • Targeted online marketing • www.racheldratch.com | I didn’t know the first thing about what a baby needs or what items were necessary to make my life infinitely easier, but I had to create a registry. So I brought in the experts: my gay friends David and Russell. Maybe because they felt lucky to have won the adoption lottery, or maybe because they actually had to pass the test of being “worthy” of being good parents (unlike the rest of us), but whatever the case, they had done more research and more preparation before they became fathers than any other new parents I knew. At the insistence of David, we did not meet at the Babies R Us right near my apartment, but rather on the Upper West Side at a store called Giggle. This is highend, gay-worthy baby stuff we are talking. I had just seen the documentary Babies, which features the lives of happy babies in Africa and Mongolia, so absolutely all of the store items were looking particularly unnecessary right now to me anyway, and I just wanted to register for some sticks, a few goats, and a swarm of flies to create a truly happy and adorable child. The video went viral, and overnight, launched him—the homeless man with a golden voice—into the hearts of millions. Since then, millions have heard pieces of his story: his successful radio career, his crack addiction, his multiple arrests, and his heartbreaking relationship with his ninety-year-old mother. But in A Golden Voice, Ted Williams finally puts all the pieces together to give an unforgettable, searingly honest account of life on the streets. Nothing is held back, as Williams takes the reader through prostitution, theft, crack houses, and homeless shelters in a search, ultimately, for redemption and hope. Along the way, we see his relationship with his long-term girlfriend, Kathy, grow into an unlikely and inspiring love story, and we hear the Golden Voice of God lead Ted from the selfishness of crime to the humility of the street corner—almost a year before he was “discovered” on that highway entrance ramp. But this memoir isn’t just an exploration of wrongs and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to give homelessness a voice. It is a deeply American, from-the-heart comeback story about the power of hope, faith, and personal responsibility. With the innate charisma that has won him millions of fans, Ted Williams proves that no one, no matter how degraded, is too lost for a second chance. | I don’t want to do this book for selfish reasons. I’ve been selfish most of my life, and that’s what put me on the street. I want to write this book for the right reasons: to give an honest accounting of my life and to show the world that no matter how far down you are, you can’t give up. You can’t lose the faith. God is there. Redemption is possible. And if you work for it, not just desire it but really work for it, you will get your chance. I’ve hurt a lot of people: my wife, my children, my ninety-year-old mother. It’s hard to watch the video of my mother telling a reporter, “He destroyed his family,” but she’s right. It’s even harder to hear her say, “I prayed and prayed, but I guess my prayers weren’t strong enough, because I never got through to him.” I let her down. My lies and addictions over the years tore her to bits, and my failures were a shadow over her otherwise beautiful life. When I saw her for the first time after being rescued from the street, she was scared. I could see that right away. She’d been hurt too many times. All she could do was put her head down, then whisper, as if hoping the dozens of television microphones wouldn’t hear, “Please don’t disappoint me. Please don’t disappoint me, son.” I know this book, by revealing some of the low-down things I’ve done, will hurt my mother even more. It will shame my wife and kids. It will leave every reader shaking their head. But as it has been written in everything from the Bible to Narcotics Anonymous, you have to give an honest accounting before you can be saved. You have to admit to your sins, all of them, with an open and remorseful heart, before you can be set free… EXCERPT 22 m ay 2012 MEMOIR 978-1-592-40714-9 $27.00 ($28.50 CAN) 304 PAGES 6x9 one 8-PAGE B&W PHOTO INSERT Export rights: E30 AGENT: foundry literary + media 1ST SERIAL, UK, TRANSLATION: Gotham books A l s o ava i l a b l e a s a n e - b o o k Ava i l a b l e f r o m P e n g u i n a u d i o s i m u lta n e o u s r e l e a s e r e a d b y t e d w i l l i a m s U n a b r i d g e d D i g i ta l O n ly • 7.5 h o u r s 978-1-10-156436-3 • $29.95 ($31.50 c a n ) • National television interviews • Newspaper and magazine features and reviews •Radio tour • National author tour •Extensive speaking tour •Blog campaign • Targeted online marketing • www.tedthegoldenvoice.com Praise for ted williams “His voice intact and his dignity restored, a Brooklyn-born panhandler returned to his hometown Thursday morning—and used his golden voice to open the Today show.” —Daily News “From homeless man to Internet sensation, Ted Williams is skyrocketing to national fame with his golden radio voice.” Ted Williams grew up in BedfordStuyvesant, Brooklyn, and served in the army before becoming the #1 drive-time DJ in Columbus, Ohio. The son of a sharecropper, Will Allen had no intention of ever becoming a farmer himself. But after years in professional basketball and as an executive for Kentucky Fried Chicken and Procter & Gamble, Allen cashed in his retirement fund for a twoacre plot a half mile away from Milwaukee’s largest public housing project. The area was a food desert with only convenience stores and fast-food restaurants to serve the needs of local residents. In the face of financial challenges and daunting odds, Allen built the country’s preeminent urban farm—a food and educational center that now produces enough vegetables and fish year-round to feed thousands of people. According to Time, the legal medicinal cannabis economy already generates $200 million annually in taxable proceeds from a mere two hundred thousand registered medical users in just fourteen states. But, thanks to Nixon and the War on Drugs, cannabis is still synonymous with heroin on the federal level even though it has won mainstream acceptance nationwide. ABC News reports that underground cannabis’s $35.8 billion annual revenues already exceed the combined value of corn ($23.3 billion) and wheat ($7.5 billion). Too High to Fail covers everything from a brief history of hemp to an insider’s perspective on a growing season in Mendocino County, where cannabis drives 80 percent of the economy (to the tune of $6 billion annually). Investigative journalist Doug Fine follows one plant from seed to patient in the first American county to fully legalize and regulate cannabis farming. Jenny Brown was just ten years old when she lost a leg to bone cancer. Throughout the ordeal, her constant companion was a cat named Boogie. Years later, she would make the connection between her feline friend and the farm animals she ate, acknowledging that most of America’s domesticated animals live on industrialized farms, and are viewed as mere production units. Raised in a conservative Southern Baptist family in Kentucky, Brown had been taught to avoid asking questions. But she found her calling and the courage to speak out. She left a flourishing career as a film and television producer after going undercover and exposing horrific animal abuse in Texas stockyards. Bringing to life this exhilarating transformation, The Lucky Ones introduces readers to Brown’s crowning achievement, the renowned Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary she established with her husband in 2004. With a cast of unforgettable survivors, including a fugitive slaughterhouse calf named Herbie; Albie, the threelegged goat; and Quincy, an Easter duckling found abandoned in New York City, The Lucky Ones reveals shocking statistics about the prevalence of animal abuse throughout America’s agribusinesses. Blending wry humor with unflinching honesty, Brown brings a compelling new voice to the healthy-living movement—and to the vulnerable, voiceless creatures among us. “Jenny Brown has always had a soft spot for animals. The first time I treated a chicken for an impacted crop, say, or the first time I watched a pig castration happen right in our barn (by a vet and under anesthesia, of course). By the time Dylan came to us, I had cared for plenty of full-grown farm animals. Trimming pig hooves, treating and wrapping infected turkey feet, handling medical charts and hay bales and parasite treatments—these were all in a day’s filthy, happy work. But now there was someone brand-new, literally, at our sanctuary: a frightened little calf all of five days old, a sweet lil Holstein boy with spindly legs, huge brown eyes, and a tongue that could wrap itself around your whole hand with one lick. Dylan, who we’d named after the musical god himself—we were in Woodstock, after all—had spent the first four of those five days tied to a tree on a small dairy farm in Troy, New York. Newborn calves like Dylan are taken from their mothers quickly, usually within one to three days. The farmer makes his money per gallon of milk, so allowing the calves to drink it (never mind that it was intended for them!) is a waste of profits. Instead, they give the calves a cheap powdered milk product that’s laden with antibiotics to keep them from getting sick from stress. The girls are moved to another facility away from the mothers who they will eventually replace in the herd, and the males are sold off very young for meat, usually to veal farmers. Dylan was unwillingly waiting for just such a farmer as he stood tied to that tree. He was lucky, though. A caring couple saw him there, managed to strike a deal with the farmer, and took him home. But the next day, already overwhelmed, they called our fledgling sanctuary and asked if we could take him in. . . . A VE R Y 35 Garbology Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash Edward Humes A Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist takes readers on a surprising tour of the world of garbage. Trash is America’s largest export. Individually, we make more than four pounds a day, sixty-four tons across a lifetime. We make so much of it that trash dominates America’s place in the global economy—now the most prized product made in the United States. In 2010, China’s number-one export to the U.S. was computer equipment. America’s two biggest exports were paper waste and scrap metal. Somehow, a country that once built things for the rest of the world has transformed itself into China’s trash compactor. In Garbology, Edward Humes reveals what this world of trash looks like, how we got here, and what some families, communities, and other countries are doing to find a way back from a world of waste. Highlights include: • Los Angeles’s sixty-story garbage mountain, so big and bizarrely prominent that it has spawned its own climate, habitat, and tour business. • The waste trackers of MIT, whose “smart trash” has exposed the secret life and dirty death of what we throw away. • China’s garbage queen, Zhang Yin, who started collecting scrap paper in the 1990s and turned it into a multibillion-dollar business exporting American trash to make Chinese products to sell back to Americans. • Artisan Bea Johnson, whose family has found that generating less waste has translated into more money, less debt, and more leisure time. As Wal-Mart aims for zero-waste strategies and household recycling has become second nature, interest in trash has clearly reached new heights. From the quirky to the astounding, Garbology weighs in with remarkable true tales from the front lines of the war on waste. “Humes’s in-depth reporting (reveals) . . . the new face of American environmentalism.” —Outside magazine’s review of Eco Barons ap r i l 2012 Current Affairs 978-1-58333-434-8 $27.00 ($28.50 CAN) 288 pages 6x9 one 8-page 4-color photo insert Export rights: E00 agent: Susan Ginsburg @ Writers House First serial, audio: avery A l s o ava i l a b l e a s a n e - b o o k • National television interviews • Newspaper and magazine features and reviews •Radio tour •Author events •Blog campaign • Targeted online marketing • www.edwardhumes.com © David Bayles Edward Humes is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author whose eleven previous books include Force of Nature, Eco Barons, and the PEN Award–winning No Matter How Loud I Shout. Zak An astonishing, game-changing account of experiments from the lab to the jungle that reveal for the first time why we are both good and evil. In The Moral Molecule Professor Paul Zak proves that a single molecule accounts for why some people give freely of themselves and others are coldhearted, why some people cheat and steal and others you can trust with your life, why some husbands are more faithful than others, and why women tend to be more generous—not to mention nicer—than men. Oxytocin is that molecule. Sometimes called the love or “cuddle” hormone because it causes mothers to care for offspring, this chemical messenger is, Zak discovered, the key to moral behavior—not just in intimate relationships but in business dealings, in politics, in society at large. From the bucolic English countryside to the highlands of Papua New Guinea, from labs in Switzerland to his campus in Southern California, Zak recounts his extraordinary stories and sets out, for the first time, his revolutionary theory of moral behavior. And as any engineer will tell you, understanding the basic mechanism is the first step toward improving a system’s output: In this case, the implications are stunning—we are better than most people believe. Accessible, amusing, and electrifying, The Moral Molecule is nothing less than the origins of our most human qualities—empathy, happiness, the kindness of strangers— revealed. With Gladwell’s brevity and Pinker’s resonance, The Moral Molecule will take readers on a wild, eye-opening ride. ✦ Paul J. She had, in the span of only a few years, lost her beloved mother, grandmother, and high school sweetheart. Hoping to find a way past her own troubles and the depression and panic attacks that quietly crippled her, she decided to raise money for school supplies for the children of war-torn Bosnia. But at a meeting with the UN ambassador she learned that those children didn’t need pencils. He showed her a photo of a boy who had lost both arms and one leg to a land mine; these children needed a lot more. Elissa went to Bosnia, brought the boy and his mother back to Staten Island, and arranged for free prosthetics and medical care. The Global Medical Relief Fund was born. Working from the walk-in closet in her home, Elissa has since brought more than 150 children injured in war zones—Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and elsewhere—to the United States, where, with the help of the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia and a network of doctors, nurses, and community leaders, they receive free housing and ongoing care. In I’ll Stand by You, Elissa tells the stories of these children and the soldiers, doctors, and ordinary Americans who have come to their aid; the resistance she has faced for helping non-Americans; and the heartwarming tale of how in helping these children, she healed herself. photo courtesy of the author The inspiring true story of how one woman— who People dubbed “the saint of Staten Island” —is changing the world, one child at a time. au g u st 2012 Memoir 978-0-525-95295-4 $25.95 ($27.50 CAN) 288 pages 6x9 Export rights: e30 Agent: Foundry Literary + Media First serial, Audio: Dutton A l s o ava i l a b l e a s a n e - b o o k • National publicity P r a i s e f o r E l i ssa M o n t a n t i “Elissa Montanti, with little money and no experience in humanitarian aid, has changed the fortunes of more than one hundred crippled children, one child at a time.” —Scott Pelley, 60 Minutes •Radio Tour • Newspaper and magazine features and reviews • Targeted online marketing • www.gmrfchildren.org ✦ With two appearances on 60 Minutes and coverage in Redbook Redbook,, Newsweek, Newsweek, Parade, People Parade, People,, Reader’s Digest, Digest, The New York Times, Times, and The Washington Post,, Montanti and her organization are a constant magnet for publicity Post every time she brings a new child to the United States. 46 photo courtesy of the author ELISSA MONTANTI is the founder of the Global Medical Relief Fund, a one-woman organization dedicated to helping children injured in war zones. A brilliant neurologist reveals a new paradigm of brain function that is the key to tranquility in the midst of our daily crises. Stress: The more success we have in life, the worse it seems to get. Necks and shoulders tighten. Sleep becomes elusive. Relaxation—even lying on the beach—feels impossible. But Dr. Gayatri Devi has uncovered the answer: Calm the body, and the mind follows. In this fascinating and vital book, she helps readers unruffle both. Forget about the old left-and right-brain paradigm—life success occurs when our rational “top” and older, more connected “bottom” brains are working together. Calm, a sense of internal composure enabling us to function at the peak of our abilities, comes from the bottom (brain) up. It is the ideal mental state, fully allied with the body, allowing us to harness cognitive powers while maintaining a perfect balance of emotions. When you’re calm, you’re in your zone, unperturbed by distractions or distress. In a warm, accessible voice, Dr. Devi elucidates the neuroscience of calm and shares stories from her practice on New York’s Upper East Side, such as how a woman plagued with migraines managed to wean herself from pain medicine. More personally, she recalls how her grandfather was the mellow eye of the storm in a riotous household of Indian women. Chapters on the workday, sleep, men versus women, and parenting provide practical applications. The best news of all? A tale of love and loss, survival and sacrifice, lawlessness and virtue, Hard Country is a rare and extraordinary story of one family’s struggle to settle and endure in the vast, untamed territory of New Mexico. In the wake of the death of his wife as she gives birth to his son, and the killing of his brother on the West Texas plains, John Kerney is forced to give up his ranch, leave his son behind, and strike out in search of the murdering outlaws and a place where he can start over. He drifts south, hiring on as a hand until he meets a man who offers him work trailing cattle to the New Mexico Territory and forever changes his life. Spanning the years 1875 to 1918, Hard Country is as much about the expansion of a nation as it is about the search for love, lost family, and new beginnings in the harsh, sun-scorched, sandblasted beauty of gypsum white sands, black lava badlands, and towering mountain ranges. It is an epic that infuses the tradition of the great Western novel with historically accurate settings and intelligently drawn characters. Packed with an honest portrayal of the people and events that set into motion range wars, Indian raids, cattle rustling, rough justice, long-standing feuds, murder, and the final closing of the frontier, Hard Country resonates with a hard-bitten, atmospheric reality. It is the Western reinvented and enlarged into a historic family saga that above all celebrates the people and the land of the great Southwest. | He laid down a coin, ordered a whiskey, nursed it, and thought about the tight spot he faced. Maybe Ida was touched in the head, and maybe she wasn’t. Either way, if he gave her most of all the money from the sale of the ranches, perhaps she could make the best of a bad situation until he could come for Patrick. He finished his whiskey and decided he could do no less. He could scrape along, but a woman with a baby needed more than a few dollars to survive. He’d stay and see them safely off on the supply train to Dodge City, take what money remained in his pocket, and drift south to find work. Soon, ranchers would be gathering their herds for the fall works, so it was likely he could hire on somewhere, although the job probably wouldn’t turn into anything permanent. John Kerney picked up the three yards of cloth Ida needed for Patrick’s diapers and stepped outside into the blazing hot afternoon. In a matter of days, he’d lost almost everything and everyone dear to him. He couldn’t help wondering if in the end he might lose his son, too. Drew Havens made a killing for the Rising Fund, which, thanks to his prognostications, was the only hedge operation to anticipate and capitalize on the mortgage crisis of 2008. For Havens, it’s always been about the numbers. He sees things others can’t, from the collapse of the American real estate market to the multibillion-dollar rise of his ruthless and charismatic boss. Havens is now rich beyond his dreams, but his work at the Rising Fund has cost him his marriage. And now it may cost him his life. It starts with the brutal murder of his young protégé and, over the course of six explosive days, six other brokers around the world, each killed after executing a trade linked to the Rising Fund. As the violence escalates from South Africa to São Paulo, Hong Kong to Berlin, Havens frantically tries to construct a model that will reveal the catastrophic event that only he can see coming—and confirm that his boss and the Rising Fund are at the center of it. In Brian D’Amato’s first novel, In the Courts of the Sun, a team of scientists sent math prodigy and Mayan descendant Jed DeLanda back in time to the year AD 664 to learn how the ancient Maya played a powerful divination game to predict the apocalypse in 2012. But after arriving in the body of a willing human sacrifice instead of a Mayan king, Jed’s experiences led him to the fateful decision that rather than avert the apocalypse, he must ensure instead that the world ends. Using his knowledge of the divination game, Jed sets in motion a series of events that will bring about the destruction of humanity, ending the world’s pain and suffering once and for all. But before the plan can be completed, the organization that sent him into the past discovers his intention and devotes every resource to stop him. Taking readers back to the dizzying action of ancient times, The Sacrifice Game is a breathtaking odyssey in which Jed must survive bloody wars, ruthless leaders, shifting alliances, and unspeakable betrayal to learn about the Game, before his time in both the ancient Mayan empire and the present day runs out. His widowed and senile father, Emmett, is living in squalor, and Unabelle, the elderly neighbor who’d been caring for him, lies dead behind the locked bathroom door— between Emmett’s senility and Shakespeare’s anosmia, neither man detected the smell. With no job and no prospects, Shakespeare suddenly finds himself caretaker to both his dad and the farm. They have no money, the land is fallow, and a local banker has cheated his father out of the majority of the farm equipment as well as his beloved Cessna. Shakespeare falls in with an unlikely clique of former classmates: Vaughn Atkins, a paraplegic confined to his mother’s basement; Carissa McPhail, an overweight bank teller who pitches for the local softball team; and longtime bully D. J. Beckman, who now deals drugs in small-town Dorsey. Facing the loss of the farm, Shakespeare hatches a half-serious plot with Emmett and his fellow misfits to rob the very bank that has stolen their future. East of Denver is a remarkably assured, sharply observed, and utterly memorable debut. Unmanned weaponized drones already exist—they’re widely used by America in our war efforts in the Middle East. In Kill Decision, bestselling author Daniel Suarez takes that fact and the real science behind it one step further, with frightening results. Linda McKinney is a myrmecologist, a scientist who studies the social structure of ants. Her academic career has left her entirely unprepared for the day her sophisticated research is conscripted by unknown forces to help run an unmanned—and thanks to her research, automated—drone army. Odin is the secretive Special Ops soldier with a unique insight into the faceless enemy who has begun to attack the American homeland with drones programmed to seek, identify, and execute targets without human intervention. Together, McKinney and Odin must slow this advance long enough for the world to recognize its destructive power, because for thousands of years the “kill decision” during battle has remained in the hands of humans—and off-loading that responsibility to machines will bring unintended, possibly irreversible, consequences. But as forces even McKinney and Odin don’t understand begin to gather, and death rains down from above, it may already be too late to save humankind from destruction at the hands of our own technology. In 2007, music and pop culture journalist Rob Sheffield burst onto the bestseller list with Love Is a Mix Tape, a much-beloved debut memoir about the courtship, marriage, and sudden loss of his first wife, Renee, and the music they shared. “It’s a memoir that manages—no small feat—to be funny and beautifully forlorn at the same time,” declared The New York Times. “Humorous, heartbreaking, and heroic,” raved Entertainment Weekly. In the prequel, Talking to Girls About Duran Duran, Rob stumbles into adulthood with a killer soundtrack, inept flirtations, dumb crushes, deplorable fashion choices, and girls—always girls. Turn Around Bright Eyes now uses karaoke as the lens to show how Rob Sheffield found the courage to finally embrace happiness again. To Rob, the courage to sing before a room full of strangers is a lot like the courage it takes to fall in love. This poignant, funny memoir shows how karaoke can be a great escape from sadness and a chance to try on different personas—but also a great way to create lasting bonds through the act of singing together. Using a night of karaoke as the framework for the story of how Rob and his second wife, Ally, slowly come together, we see that the rituals of a karaoke outing are similar to the rituals of dating, and how karaoke offers adults a way to embrace their inner music lover in the time when wearing band T-shirts and going to concerts can be a thing of the past. Turn Around Bright Eyes, like Love Is a Mix Tape, is a love story at heart, but a far more grown-up one this time around. Alan Gregory is finally beginning to feel settled, hopeful that a long period of upheaval in his private life is behind him. He refocuses his energy on his clinical psychology practice, where a beguiling new patient is challenging his values. The interlude of calm doesn’t last, of course: Alan’s dear friend Diane is showing signs of a long-simmering emotional collapse, and Alan’s greatest fear—the exposure of his most dangerous secret—has become something he can’t ignore. A new witness has surfaced, causing authorities to reopen their investigation into the suicide death of a woman named J. Winter Brown. When Alan and his equally culpable friend Sam Purdy inadvertently disclose details of their involvement in her death to a desperate drug dealer, any confidence they felt about riding out the new investigation evaporates. The trail that leads back to Alan and Sam, once cold, has turned white-hot. With his vulnerability mounting daily, Alan begins to fear that his mesmerizing new patient may be the catalyst that can cause everything he treasures—his marriage, family, friendship, and future—to implode. Recently returned from the experience of a lifetime in fin de siècle Vienna, where she met and tragically lost the first great love of her life, Eleanor Burden has no choice but to settle into her expected place in society, marry the man she is supposed to marry, and wait for life to come to her. As the twentieth century approaches, hers is a story not unlike that of the other young women she grew up with in 1890s Boston—a privileged upbringing punctuated by a period of youthful adventure and followed by the inevitable acknowledgment of real life—except for one small difference: Eleanor possesses an unshakable belief that she has advance knowledge of every major historical event to come during her lifetime. But soon the script of events she has written in her mind—a script described by no less than Sigmund Freud as the invented delusions of a hysteric—begins to unravel. Eleanor Burden, at once fragile and powerful, must find the courage of her deepest convictions, discover the difference between predetermination and free will, secure her belief in her own sanity, and decide whether she will allow history to unfold come what may—or use her extraordinary gifts to bend history to her will and deliver for her the life she knows she is meant to have.
