on Wednesday with Chief
Minister

MOBILE, LANDLINE AND INTERNET SERVICES
SUSPENDED IN JAMMU
After Thursday’s temple
desecration incident, Internet
services across Jammu region
have been suspended to stop
spread of rumours on social
networking sites.
A district official said all
mobile and broadband-based
Internet services have been
suspended.
“To stop rumour mongering
on social networking sites in
the wake of the desecration of
Shiv temple in Nanak Nagar
area, the authorities decided
to temporarily suspend all In-
ternet services including mobile and landline Internet services,” the official said.
One more temple was allegedly desecrated in Jammu
on thursday, leading to tension
briefly in parts of the city.
“A man entered a temple in
the Nanak Nagar area and tried
to vandalise it. The man has
been identified and arrested,”
Deputy Commissioner of Jammu Simrandeep Singh had said.
A large number of people
came onto the roads after
news spread. Shopkeepers in
the area downed their shutters
and held a protest demanding
action against the accused.
“Though some people held
protest in the area, the situation is normal and under control. Adequate police personnel have been deployed to foil
any untoward incident in the
area,” Singh said.
The incident took place even
as normalcy had returned to
Jammu following alleged desecration of a temple in another
area Roopnagar on Tuesday by
a man who was described by
police as “mentally disturbed”.
The city had witnessed violence and arson over that incident.

GULBERG MASSACRE CASE VERDICT
SPARKS WAR OF WORDS BETWEEN
BJP AND CONG
After the verdict of
the Gulberg massacre
case which was pronounced on Friday, BJP
and Congress on Friday
blamed and accused
each other of using the
issue for their political
advantage.
A special SIT court
sentenced 11 convicts
to life imprisonment on
Friday.
Commenting on the
verdict, Gujarat Congress
spokesperson
Manish Doshi said people who “played into the
hands” of BJP leaders
are now behind bars,
while the actual culprits
are now enjoying the
power.
“Those who played
into hands of some political leaders are now
behind bars while those
who incited them for
their political gains have
subsequently acquired
power. Those who became a tool of such
leaders, who always believed in polarisation,
will have to spend their
lives in jail,” he said.
“The entire incident
of Gulberg was barbaric
and anti-human. Instead
of protecting people, the

NAMIBIA PROMISES URANIUM
SUPPLY TO INDIA
BJP government at that
time gave a free hand to
(the) violent mob. The
government failed to do
its constitutional duty.
People were incited by
some big leaders of BJP,
who saw the violence as
a tool to acquire power,”
he alleged.
On the other side,
Gujarat BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya rubbished the allegations
of Congress and maintained that there was
no conspiracy behind
the massacre.
He also accused Congress party and social
activist Teesta Setalvad
of trying to use the conspiracy theory for political and personal gains.
“We welcome today’s
judgement by the court.
Earlier, the court had
refused to accept that
there was conspiracy
behind the crime. Congress as well as people
like Teesta tried hard to
prove that it was conspiracy, so that it can be
used against BJP. But,
court had ruled against
their wishes,” said Pandya.
“We welcome today’s
verdict. The court’s verdict was given without
any influence. It is natural that people from
both the sides, accused
as well as victims, may
not like it.
They all can approach
high court. I also urge
Congress to stop politicising this issue,” he further said.
A special SIT court
here today sentenced
11 convicts to life imprisonment in the case
of burning alive of 69
people, including former Congress MP Ehsan
Jafri, in the 2002 postGodhra violence.
The court also awarded ten-year jail term to
one of the 13 convicted
for lesser offences while
12 others have been
given seven-year sentence each.

INTELLIGENCE HAS INCREASED, COUNTER TERRORIST
NETWORK IS TIGHTENING : PARRIKAR
Defence
Minister
Manohar Parikkar said
on Friday the increased
number of terrorist encounters shows that the
country’s intelligence
has “increased” and
counter terrorist network is “tightening”.
“More
encounters
means - we are neutralising more, our intelligence has increased,
our counter terrorist
network is now tightening up,” he told reporters here.
He said, “If you see
the ratio of security

rate of 1:4.3/4.4.”
The number of terrorists’
neutralised
was more than 50 now,
whereas only 12
security
forces
personnel had lost
-their lives.
Stating that the
loss of security
forces should further reduce, he
said “our efforts
are towards it.”
Parrikar was responding to a question on whether the
increased number of
terror encounters was
because of increased
vigil or more attempts
of infiltration.
The Defence Minister was in Bengaluru to
witness the inaugural
flight of India’s indigenous basic trainer aircraft, Hindustan Turbo
Trainer-40
(HTT-40)
designed and developed
by HAL here.
A militant was killed
today in an ongoing
encounter with security forces in Sopore in
north
Kashmir’s
Baramulla district.
Pointing out that
most incidents of
terror infiltration
and
encounters
take place before
winter,
Parikkar
said either they
were not noted
earlier or probably they
were not taken “very seriously”.
Claiming that the
country used to lose
almost a soldier for a
terrorist, Parrikar said
“now you see yesterday’s report.
Four terrorists on the
border trying to infiltrate were killed.
In three days, two attempts have been neutralised.”
Four militants and
a soldier were killed
as the Army yesterday
foiled an infiltration

Resource-rich Namibia today assured that
it will look into “legal
ways” through which
its uranium can be supplied to India for peaceful nuclear use.
Speaking at the State
Banquet hosted in the
honour of President
Pranab Mukherjee, Namibian President Hage
Geingob said Namibia commends India’s
commitment towards
peaceful use of nuclear
energy.
“We will look into legal ways wherein our
uranium can be used
by India,” he
said.
Geingob
said
his
country had
resources
but cannot
use
them
as it does
not possess
any nuclear
weapons.
“We have
resources but we cannot use it we do not
have nuclear weapons.
But there are those who
can use it. We will look
into legal ways,” he said.
Citing a conversation
with a former diplomat
of India, he said it was a
“nuclear apartheid” that
a handful of countries
wanted to dictate terms
of nuclear technology.
In an impassioned
speech on reforms in
United Nations, IMF and
World Bank, the President said how can a
country with 1.2 billion
people and a continent
with one billion people
do not get representation in the United Nations Security Council.
“How can it be democratic?” Geingob asked.
Inviting Indian companies to invest in Namibia, Geingob lauded
India’s proposal of International Solar Alliance, saying he appreciated the country’s role
in combating climate
change.
“In Namibia, we see
ourselves as gateway
to Africa. We are also
in close proximity to
South America which
is an important partner
in South South cooperation but we are ready
to be gateway to Indian
companies into Africa
and South America,” he
said.
“India attaches high
importance to enhancing her bilateral relations with Namibia. Our
two countries have been
cooperating
closely
while making sustained
efforts to realise the
developmental
goals
of our two nations,”
Mukherjee said.
“We share the view
that reform of the United Nations and its principle organs - created in
the wake of the Second
World War - is an imperative. We agree that
they need to be made
more reflective of today’s changed world
- so that they can respond more effectively
to the complex challenges confronting the
world today,” he said in
his speech.
Mukherjee said Africa and India, as centres
of gravity in today’s
globalised
world, have
a
responsibility
to
work together for peace,
security and
sustainable
development in the
two continents.
“Namibia
is blessed with rich natural resources and an
abundance of mineral
wealth. Their efficient
extraction and value
addition using environment-friendly methods
will contribute to the
sustainable
development of this sector of
your economy. India
has always been - and
will continue to be - a
reliable partner in your
endeavours in this direction,” he said.

STUDENT TO JAIL FOR DEATH
OF FRIEND IN DRAG RACE
The Court heard that the
two had just left a friend’s
house in separate cars and
started to race each other
when they took off from a
set of traffic lights on Spencer Road in Thornlie suburb.
They travelled about
400 metres when Kahn lost
control of his car.
A 23-year-old Pakistani
student has been sentenced
to two years imprisonment
by an Australian court over
the death of his friend
during a drag race.
Muhammad Uzair Sal-
eem was sentenced by
Perth jury after he was
found guilty of dangerous
driving causing the death of
19-year-old Nadeem Kahn
in June 2014, according to
ABC report.
The vehicle skidded and
slid across the road, mounting the kerb, the footpath
and a grass verge and
smashed through a brick
wall and catching fire, the
report said.
Kahn died at the scene.
Witnesses testified the
cars had been travelling

death of his friend.
Judge Stephen Scott
said while it may never be
known exactly why Kahn
lost control of his vehicle,
he was satisfied the crash
was caused by both cars
being raced at speed.
However, Judge Scott
said an immediate jail term
had to be imposed to send a
message to the community
that drivers needed to be
responsible on the roads.
He told Saleem this “affected Kahn’s ability to
maintain effective control
of his vehicle, given it was
likely his attention was being diverted to racing with
your vehicle”.
Saleem’s lawyer Johnathan Davies had urged the
judge to impose a suspended prison sentence, arguing
his client was otherwise

Saleem will have to serve

AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER
REGRETS INVITING ‘ANTI-GAY’ CLERIC
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull
voiced regret today after
inviting a senior Islamic leader who has condemned homosexuality to
a fast-breaking Ramadan
dinner.
Sheikh Shady Alsuleiman was present yesterday
at an exclusive function at
the Australian leader’s official Sydney residence Kirribilli House, alongside other
leading Muslim figures.
In a sermon uploaded to YouTube in 2013
the sheikh, president of
the Australian National
Imams Council, said gay
people were responsible
for spreading diseases and
attracted “evil outcomes to
our society”.
Turnbull, MP for the
Sydney seat that hosts the
annual Gay and Lesbian
Mardi Gras parade, said he
would not have invited him
if he had known his views,
emphasising the need for
acceptance of diversity of
sexuality and religion.
“I said earlier today, and
I say again now, a statement
of the strongest condemnation of those remarks,” he
told reporters.
“I regard as unacceptable, and I will always condemn, any remarks which
disrespect any part of our
community, whether it is
on the basis of their sexuality, their gender, their race,
their religion.”
The faux pas came just
days after Australia cancelled the visa of a British
Muslim cleric who once
preached that gays should
be put to death, revelations
that sparked an outcry in
the wake of the Orlando gay
nightclub killings.
Farrokh
Sekaleshfar,
who was in Sydney as the
guest speaker of an Islamic
centre, suggested in a 2013
lecture that death was a
“compassionate” sentence
for homosexuals.

was the first time an Australian leader has hosted

“Today, Russian aircraft
conducted a series of air
strikes near al-Tanf against
Syrian Counter-ISIL forces that included individuals who have received US
support,” said the senior
defence official yesterday,
who requested anonymity.
“Russian aircraft have
not been active in this area
of southern Syria for some
time, and there were no
Syrian regime or Russian
ground forces in the vicinity,” the official said.
It was not known how
many fighters were struck
and the extent of casualties
or which group they be-
longed to.
The US military launched
a USD 500 million program
in early 2015 to train entire
units of “moderate” Syrians
to fight ISIS jihadists. But
the program drew heavy
fire last fall after admitting
the efforts had floundered,
with numbers of trainees
falling massively short of
the planned 5,000.
One group even handed
over ammunition and other gear to a local Al-Qaeda affiliate, known as the
Al-Nusra Front.
Since then, the Pentagon’s new strategy is to
work with just a handful of
members from each fighting group, instead of an entire unit. Much of the attention is being focused on the
Syrian Democratic Forces,
a largely Kurdish coalition
that has scored some sig-
bution Muslim people had
made to Australia.

“A pluralistic democracy,
in India today religious tolerance is deteriorating and
religious freedom violations
are increasing,” Robert P

Princeton University and a
former chairman of the US
Commission on International Religious Freedom, told
lawmakers during a Congressional hearing.
“Minority communities,
especially Christians, Muslims, and Sikhs, have experienced numerous incidents
of intimidation, harassment
and violence during the past
year, largely at the hands of
Hindu nationalist groups,”
George alleged in his testimony before the Subcommittee on Africa, Global
Health, Global Human
Rights and International
Organisations of the House
Foreign Affairs Committee.
“The bedrock of that,
the foundation, is mutual
respect and that is why I

alleged.
These issues, combined
with longstanding problems
of police bias and judicial
inadequacies have created
a pervasive climate of impunity in which religious
minority communities increasingly feel insecure
with no recourse when religiously- motivated crimes
occur, George told lawmakers yesterday.
In his testimony, George
said in the last year, “higher
caste” individuals and local
political leaders also prevented Hindus considered
part of the Scheduled Castes
and Scheduled Tribes (Dalits) from entering religious
temples.
The national government
or state governments also
applied several laws to restrict religious conversion,
cow slaughter, and foreign
funding of NGOs, he said.
India has been on USCIRF’s Tier 2 since 2009.
Given its negative trajectory, USCIRF will continue to
monitor the situation closely during the year ahead to
determine if India should be
recommended to the State

Concern, George said.
In his testimony, George
alleged that civil society in
particular non governmental organisations receiving
funds from overseas are facing difficulties.
In April 2015, the Ministry of Home Affairs revoked
the licenses of nearly 9,000
charitable organisations, he
noted.
“For example, two NGOs,
the Sabrang Trust and
Citizens for Justice and

conflict-resolution
programmes and fight court

leading the rally along with
high-profile

Wong called Lam a hero.
“Lam is the role model for

Demosisto is a newly formed party calling

movement of young campaigners seeking more autonomy from Beijing amid
fears of disappearing freedoms.
Other political groups are
due to protest outside the

Rights group Amnesty International slammed
China’s treatment of the
booksellers, saying Lam had
confirmed what many had
suspected.
“It seems clear he, and
most likely the others,
were arbitrarily detained,
ill-treated and forced to
confess,” said Mabel Au, Director of Amnesty International Hong Kong.
Lam told how his confession televised by Chinese
state media in February
was scripted and directed,
and that he recited it out of
fear of what would happen
to him.
Another two booksellers,
Cheung Chi-ping and Lui

ON TIBET-RELATED ISSUES
In the wake of U.S. President Barack Obama’s
meeting with the 14th Dalai Lama, China has urged
Washington to refrain from
interfering in Beijing’s domestic affairs including Tibet-related issues.
Stating that the 14th
Dalai Lama was not a purely religious figure, but a
political exile engaged in
anti-China separatist activities under the guise of
religion, Foreign Ministry
spokesperson Lu Kang Lu
said, “Tibet affairs are China’s domestic affairs and
no foreign country has the
right to interfere”
Lu added the meeting
between Obama and Dalai
Lama goes against the U.S.
acknowledgement that Tibet is an inseparable part
of Chinese territory and its
rejection of “Tibet independence” and anti-China separatist activities.
The Foreign Ministry
spokesperson further said
such a meeting harms China- U.S. mutual trust and
cooperation
and
interferes in Beijing’s internal affairs.
Reportedly, Obama
emphasized

support for

OIL PRICES BOUNCE AFTER SIX
DAYS OF LOSSES
Oil prices rebounded with share markets
in Asia today after a
six-session sell-off with
the dollar softening
against most other currencies on easing concerns over Britain’s EU
future.
After
yesterday’s
sharp losses, equities
pushed higher today on
bargain-buying while
analysts said the killing

Britons will vote to stay
in the European Union
next week.
The shooting of Labour MP Jo Cox - by a
man who reportedly
shouted the name of a
far-right, anti-EU group
- forced the cancellation
until the weekend of
campaigning for the referendum.
World markets have
been in a tailspin for
the past week as recent
polling had indicated
the exit camp would win
the June 23 ballot.
“It’s evident that the
rally is being entirely
attributed to the belief
that yesterday’s tragedy
has increased the likelihood of the ‘Remain’
side holding sway in
next week’s referendum,” Ray Attrill, cohead of currency strategy at National Australia
Bank in Sydney, said.
All major markets in
the region were solidly
higher and the general
easing of tensions over
the British referendum
saw traders move into
riskier

from the greenback,
making oil cheaper for
holders of other units.

West Texas Intermediate rose 35 cents, or
0.76 per cent, to USD

By the close of trade
yesterday WTI had
plunged 10 per cent
in six days from last
week’s 11-month high,
while Brent had given
up nine per cent.
“The US dollar pared
back slightly this morning and this has improved sentiment for
oil,” said Bernard Aw,
Market Strategist for IG

However, with prices still around 80 per
cent above February’s
near 13-year lows,
many firms are bringing
mothballed rigs back
online as they become
more economically viable, which analysts said
would reignite a global
supply glut.
A resumption of Canadian output after last
month’s wildfires, and
hopes for talks between
the Nigerian government and rebels to stop
attacks on installations,
are also dampening
prices.
‘With Canadian production returning, prices may have climbed
as far as they could for
now,” Ric Spooner, a
chief analyst at CMC
Markets in Sydney, told
Bloomberg News.
“It’s likely the correction will be shallower
than it would have been
earlier in the year because the market is seen
as being closer to balance,” he said.
AIR INDIA PLANS TO LEASE
SEVEN A320 NEOS
Air India plans to
lease seven more new
A320 neos for up to 12
years as the national
carrier seeks to augment its fleet to meet
growing air traffic demand.
This is the second
time that the airline,
which is working on
its turnaround plans, is
looking to ramp up its
fleet with the more fuel-efficient A320 neos
(new engine option).
In March, Air India
inked a pact with a Kuwait-based firm to lease
14 A320 neos, whose
delivery would start
from early next year.
Now, the national airline has sought bids for
dry leasing seven new
A320 neos for a period
of up to 12 years.
These aircraft should
be delivered before June
30, 2018, according to a
tender document issued
by Air India.
Last year, the
airline inducted
five new A320
aircraft on dry
lease and has
firmed up the
leasing of 22
A320 neo planes
fitted with CFM
engines. These
are expected to
be delivered between
January
2017 and March 2019.
Currently, IndiGo and
GoAir operates A320
neo aircraft in the domestic routes.
At present, Air India
has 68 aircraft of A320
family while the total
fleet size is 108. It also
has Boeing 747s, 777s
and Dreamliners.
“The A320 neo aircraft should be powered
by CFM Leap -1A26 engines,” the tender document said.
In March, the airline
had inked a pact with

in a cliffhanger at the
Lee Valley Hockey Centre late last evening. This
was after India lost 2-4
to title favourites Australia in their last round
robin encounter.
The draw between
Great Britain and Belgium meant both of them
finished behind India in
the round-robin league,
paving the way for India
to play World champions
Australia in the tonight’s
title encounter.
Australia topped the
league standings with 13
points from five games,
while India ended on
seven points. Great Britain ended on six points
and Belgium were left on
four points.
Britain will feature in
the bronze medal match
with dethroned title
holders Germany, who
outplayed South Korea
7-0. This was Germany’s
biggest win over the Koreans in international
matches. Belgium will
take on South Korea in
the play-off for the fifth
position.
Starting the day’s proceedings with a 2-4 loss
to top-ranked Australia,
the Indian players went
through a pensive wait
for the result of the last
league fixture as both
Great Britain and Belgium could have scraped
ahead of India.
Britain simply required a victory to go
past India on points,
while Belgium needed
to win by three goals or
score at least four in a
two-goal victory to finish ahead of India on
goal difference.
All three possibilities
were within close distance until the last stages, leaving the Indian
fans in the stadium on
tenterhooks. Even the
last British shot at the
goal with five seconds
left could have taken the
hosts into the final, but
the ball went a few centimeters wide of the post.
The Indian team had
left the ground after
their match and followed the developments
at the hotel, while the
pendulum swung from
one side to the other in a
dramatic sequence.
KVITOVA SLIPS OUT OF WIMBLEDON
Petra Kvitova, the
two-time
Wimbledon
champion who has been
hoping to build her grass
court momentum for a
third tilt at the oldest
Grand Slam title, instead
became the latest big
name to lose at the rainhit Birmingham WTA
tournament on Thursday.
Moving gingerly on
the lush surface, Kvitova
subsided to a 6-4 4-6 6-3
second round loss to Jelena Ostapenko, the world
number 38. Erasing a
0-2 deficit in the decider
visibly encouraged the
19-year-old Latvian, who
pressed harder, hit flatter, and often played the
big points better.
“It was difficult to put
the pressure on her,” said
Kvitova, who played with
her right thigh strapped.
“When she dropped
serve she became more
dangerous. And I wasn’t
moving very well today.
At the beginning (of the
grass court season) it
is really difficult for the
body. I don’t know that
I did anything wrong.
But at least I played
two matches here, and I
hope to get more at Eastbourne (next week).”
Neither player was
helped by a slightly late
start and a 40-minute interruption in the middle
of the match, both caused
by incessant showers
which have blighted the
tournament for four
days.
Perhaps
unsurprisingly it was the younger
player who proved more
resilient in dealing with
it all.
The most crucial moments came immediately
after Kvitova had broken
serve to level at a set all,
and then surged into a
2-0 lead in the decider.
She followed it with a
poor game, failing to land
her first serve frequently
enough and then playing an even more disappointingly in the seventh
game, delivering a double fault and dropping
her serve to love.
She earned a break
back point in the following game but was denied
by a brilliant forehand
from Ostapenko and after that the match ended
swiftly.
“I’d beaten her before,”
said Ostapenko, referring to a victory on hard
courts in Doha in the first
week of the year.
“So I thought I could
do it again.”
She next plays Madison Keys, the top 20
American for a place in
the semi-finals. Kvitova
was followed to the exit
door by Caroline Wozniacki, the former world
number one, was who
beaten 6-4 6-7 (5/7) 6-2
by Yanina Wickmayer,
ranked down at 49 but
aa former finalist in Birmingham.
Wozniacki has also
been struggling with injuries in recent weeks,
and had moments when
she appeared concerned
not to aggravate them in
a match that was interrupted three times by the
weather.
Two other seeds, Angelique Kerber, the Australian Open champion,
and Carla Suarez Navarro were also struggling
when rain ended play
early for the fourth day in
a row.
Kvitova’s and Wozniacki’s exits followed
those on earlier days of
Agnieszka Radwanska,
the top seed, of Belinda Bencic, the youngest
world top 10 player, and
Karolina Pliskova, the
eighth-seeded
Czech
who won the title on the
Nottingham grass last
week. (PTI)
INDIA GEARS UP FOR T20
(PTI) The ODI series
proving to be a stroll in the
park, Mahendra Singh Dhoni would look to finish his
current season with another dominant performance
when he leads India in the
three-match Twenty20 series against a hapless Zimbabwe, starting here tomorrow.
Riding high after inflicting a 3-0 whitewash on the
hosts, Dhoni and his boys
will try do an encore in the
shortest version as well.
The likes of Kedar Jadhav,
Manish Pandey, who toured
here last time, will do well
to remember that the T20
series in 2015 ended in 1-1
draw after the Ajinkya Rahane-led side lost the second
game.
But the world’s most ex-
perienced T20 skipper incharge and a team which
has 14 out of the 15 players (save Faiz Fazal) with
IPL contracts, India again
are runaway favourites to
decimate a Zimbabwe side
which at times has looked
inferior than many of the
lower-rung first-class Indian sides.
With the gulf between
the two teams being so
huge, Dhoni would ideally
like to shuffle his batting
order a bit and also try out
some of the benchwarmers
like Mandeep Singh, Jayant
Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, who
will also be itching to get a
game under their belt.
However, Dhoni would
ideally like to start the T20
series with another resounding win and having
found a winning combina-
tion, he will ideally not like
to tinker with it.
half-century in his debut international game.
The small group of Indian supporters would be
disappointed if Dhoni at
least doesn’t promote himself up the order in one of
the games as everyone is
waiting to see the skipper
devour a below mediocre
Zimbabwe attack.
But then Nair has been
a consistent T20 player for
both the suspended Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL with a decent strike-rate of 122-plus
over 64 games (IPL and domestic matches included).
KL Rahul, Manish Pandey,
Ambati Rayudu and Dhoni himself are certainties
in the T20 line-up as well.
However, it will be a choice
between Karun Nair and
Faiz Fazal for the opener’s
slot.
Nair got to open in two
ODIs and while he got 39 in
the second game, he didn’t
exactly seem comfortable
while left-hander Fazal
looked elegant during his
Fazal, on the other hand,
has a strike-rate of over 105
in the shortest format and
has not had an IPL contract
since 2011.
While
Punjab-lad
Mandeep will be eager to
get his maiden senior cap,
Dhoni, to be fair, would like
to give Kedar Jadhav a hit as
he did not even get a chance
to bat in the three ODI
matches that India won by
9, 8 and 10 wickets respectively.
ENGLAND AND UKRAINE MADE HISTORY,
GERMANY MADE GOALLESS DRAW
Germany provided the first goalless
draw, England earned
the first comeback
victory and Ukraine
became the first team
to be eliminated from
the European Championship on Thursday.
World champions in
Brazil two years ago
and 2-0 winners over
Ukraine on Sunday,
Germany went into its
Group C game against
Poland at the Stade de
France as the clear favorites.
Instead,
Germany
was kept in check by a
well-organized Poland
side that also had the
best chance to break
the deadlock in a dour
game.
Arkadiusz
Milik,
who had scored Poland’s winner against
Northern Ireland on
Sunday, miscued a
header as he fell to his
knees in Germany’s
goalmouth and the
ball bounced wide.
“We created few
chances today,” Germany coach Joachim
Loew said. “We didn’t
increase the tempo
and then nine of 10
Poles were behind the
ball.”
For a second match
running, Gareth Bale
scored with a longrange free kick to
put Wales 1-0 up in
a match. But unlike
its opening-game win
over Slovakia, this
time there was only
disappointment
after the break as England substitutes Jamie Vardy and Daniel
Sturridge turned the
match around for a
2-1 victory.
England coach Roy
Hodgson
doesn’t
have a reputation as
a hardened gambler
when it comes to substitutions. So the sight
of Vardy and Sturridge
walking on for the
second half, instead
of Harry Kane and
Raheem Sterling, was
little short of astonishing.
With teenager Marcus Rashford then
replacing Adam Lallana in the 73rd minute, Hodgson ended
up deploying three
forwards plus Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in a
playmaking role to try
to shake things up in
the Group B match. It
worked.
Vardy levelled in the
56th minute and Sturridge rifled home the
winner from a similar-
ly close range in stoppage time.
“We made the decision (on the substitutes) early. It was the
right decision,” Hodgson said.
“We were anxious
to inject a little bit
more tempo and pace
into our game, and we
were anxious to persuade the players to
take a few more risks
and to show more confidence in themselves
in the penalty area.”
Northern
Ireland
later claimed its first
tournament
victory in 34 years with a
2-0 win over Ukraine.
With the loss, Ukraine
became the first team
in the tournament assured of not advancing to the knockout
stages.

‘UDTA PUNJAB’ BEAUTIFUL FILM, ONLINE
LEAK A TRAGEDY: KATRINA
Bollywood
actress Katrina Kaif has
praised “Udta Punjab”
calling it a “beautiful”
film but said it is extremely tragic that the
movie was leaked online.
The
32-year-old
“Fitoor” actress, who
watched the film at
the special screening
here last night, was impressed with the performances of Shahid
Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
“I thought it was a
really outstanding film.
Both Shahid and Alia
have done an unbelievable job. Alia’s performance is absolutely
brilliant in the film. I
think it is a beautiful
movie,” she told reporters.
“The director is pas-
sionate about the story
he chose and he has
done justice to it,” Katrina added.
The film stars Sha-
hid as high-on-drugs
rockstar Tommy Singh
while Alia is seen as a
Bihari migrant, who
is an aspiring hockey
player.
The
Abhishek
Chaubey-directed project, which was involved
in a battle with the cen-

sor board, was leaked
on the Internet two
days before its release.
Katrina says the incident is a big tragedy as
an immense amount of
hardwork has gone behind a film.
The actress joined
other Bollywood celebrities including Aamir
Khan, Karan Johar and
filmmaker
Anurag
Kashyap, who appealed
the audience to watch
the movie only in theaters.
“I think this is a big
tragedy. There is an
incredible amount of
work which has gone
into the film. When you
will see the film, hopefully in the cinema hall,
you will appreciate it.
I would urge people to
not watch it online.
ZAC EFRON IN TALKS TO JOIN BARNUM MUSICAL
“High School Musical” actor Zac Efron is
in negotiations to join
Hugh Jackman in “The
Greatest Showman on
Earth”.
In the film, Jackman will play famous
showman
Barnum,
who founded the Barnum & Bailey Greatest
Show on Earth, Circus
troupe.
It has yet to be revealed
what
role
Efron would play in
the movie, said The
Hollywood Reporter.
Jackman has been
attached to the project for years. In 2009,
reports suggested he
would star alongside
his future “Les Miserables” castmate Anne
Hathaway but it is unclear whether the actress is still attached
to the project.
The final draft of the
movie has been written by “This Is Where
I Leave You” author
Jonathan Tropper.
“The
Greatest
Showman on Earth” is
scheduled for release
next year.
WHEN RAY CAME ON BOARD SHASHI’S FIRST ENGLISH FILM
The success of ‘The
Householder’ as a stepping stone for Shashi
Kapoor’s foray into
international cinema
has a lot to do with the
legendary Satyajit Ray,
who not only loaned
to the film’s makers his
genius cameraman but
also suggested music
and editing for it, says a
new book.
Released in 1963,
‘The Householder’ is a
black and white comedy-drama
featuring
Shashi in his first EnAmid the talks that Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’ and
Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’
would have an effect on
each other’s fate at the Box
Office, Mr. Perfectionist is
all praise for ‘Sultan’ and
can’t wait for its release.
Speaking to Pinkvilla,
the 51-year-old actor said,
“ Sultan comes in July and
I am excited to watch the
movie because all his (Salman’s) films are good and
entertaining. Salman and
my film have different story despite the same theme
of wrestling. I saw the pro-
glish film. The film was
directed by James Ivory
and produced by Ismail
Merchant with the duo
forming the famous
Merchant-Ivory
Productions.
“If ‘The Householder’ is considered lucky
despite
confronting
a spate of monetary
challenges - it is on account of the unexpected intercession of the
legendary filmmaker,
Satyajit Ray. James met
Satyajit during a visit
to Calcutta; it so hap-
pened that the Bengali master had seen
a short film of his and
had liked it. Satyajit
introduced James and
Ismail to his cinematographer, Subrata Mitra; he loaned them this
genius of a cameraman,
who went on to shoot
‘The Householder’, giving it its pristine look
with stunning blackand-white montages,”
says the recently released ‘Shashi Kapoor
- the Householder, the
Star’, written by Aseem
Chhabra.
In addition, Ray
stepped in for ‘The
Householder’s’ music
production - enlisting
the help of Ali Akbar
Khan, the sitar maestro
- and even re-edited the
film with his editor, Dulal Dutta, when James
and Ismail showed him
a rough cut.
James recounts how
this came to be in an interview with the novelist, Amitav Ghosh.
“After ‘The Householder’ was edited, it
still seemed very unwieldy, not very nicely
done... I asked [Ray] if
I could bring the film
to show him. He said
sure come on. So Ismail
and I climbed on the
train we took the Hindi
version of it, all those
cans, there must have
been twenty-four cans
or something. We went
from Bombay to Calcutta with all that film.
He saw it and liked
it he thought there
was something there
to work with. I asked
him whether he could
give us any suggestions
about the cutting and
he said, yes. He would
re-cut it, but he didn’t
want me to interfere
while he was doing
that.
“He said let me have
a go at it, I’ll do it my
way, you can be in the
editing room if you
want to be, when we’re
all done you can change
it if you want to, that’s
your business, but let
me do what I want to
do. So then he and his
editor Dulal Dutt[a] recut the film. They took
about four days, and
gave it a new shape. It
was he [Ray] who suggested that it go into a
flashback form,” says
the Rupa Publications’
book, the maiden biography on Shashi Kapoor.
Riteish Deshmukh
may have featured in
many adult comedies,
but actor is not embarrassed about any
of his work.
The 37-year-old actor has acted in adult
comedies like “Kya
Kool Hai Hum”, “Kya
Super Kool Hai Hum”
and his latest “Great
Grand Masti”.
When asked how
his son, who is oneand-a-half years old,
will react to his movies when he grows up,
Riteish said, “When
I do films, I do it because it is important for me how I feel
about films. I am sure
as an actor there are
some movies which he
can watch two years
from now and some
after 18 years.”
“Let him watch
them, if he likes them
fine, if he doesn’t that’s
also fine. I am not embarrassed about any
of my work,” he said.
The
actor
was
talking to reporters at
the trailer launch of
“Great Grand Masti”
last night.
Riteish, 37, said he
has worked in several diverse movies,
like the raunchy comedy “Grand Masti”,
Marathi action film
“Lai Bhaari” and the
thriller “Ek Villain”.
On being quizzed
if his adult comedies
might make the actor’s Marathi audience sad, Riteish said
the viewers have been
kind to him so far.
“As an actor I get
an opportunity to do
various films, adult
and naughty comedy
being one of them. I
don’t look down upon
any genre. I am happy that ‘Grand Masti’
was a successful film,
that’s the reason we
are coming back with
this. I am happy that
‘Lai Bhaari’ was successful too. Audience
has been very kind to
me,” he said.
“Great Grand Masti” is the third installment in the “Masti”
franchise. The film
also stars franchise
regular Vivek Oberoi
and Aftab Shivdasani.
The “Housefull 3”
actor says while there
may come a saturation
point for him in doing
adult comedies, newness in the subject can
always make the work
interesting.
“Of course there can
be (saturation point).
The idea is, everyone
does realize while doing a film that there
could be a saturation
point, but when you
have something new
to offer, there is new
humour.”
The
Indra
Kumar-directed
film,
also starring Urvashi
Rautela, is set to release on July 22.

AAMIR KHAN ‘EXCITED’ ABOUT SALMAN KHAN’S ‘SULTAN’
mo and it is amazing.”
He further said that he
liked the movie’s teaser
and its new song, adding
that he is excited to watch
the movie.
Talking about both being wrestling-based films,
the ‘ PK’ star stated, “Kushti has different techniques.
It isn’t like if one pehlwan
does dhobi pachad, the
other cannot do it.”
Aamir even talked
about the social relevance
of his upcoming flick ‘
Dangal’ and said, “I think
it goes beyond wrestling.
The script that is written
by Nitesh, it is an important aspect. But it has a human angle and is socially
relevant. It is very entertaining as well.”
The movie stars Aamir
portraying the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who
taught wrestling to his
daughters Babita Kumari
and Geeta Phogat.
Actor John Stamos is joining season
two of Fox’s “Scream
Queens” as a series
regular.
The new season is
moving from college
campus to a hospital
where some of the
most fascinating and
bizarre medical cases
are under observation, said The Holly-
wood Reporter.
The
52-year-old
“Fuller House” star
will play Dr Brock
Holt, the hospital’s
brilliant, but secretive, head surgeon.
Stars returning for
new season include Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma
Roberts, Lea Michele,
Abigail Breslin, Keke
Palmer, Glen Powell
and Niecy Nash.
Stamos’ work on
the show will reunite
him with creator Ryan
Murphy, with whom
he worked on “Glee”.
“Scream
Queens”
season two will premier on September
20.
