Rejuvenating and Modernizing Move the Industry
While “restoration” once referred to using only original or reproduction
parts, the industry has come to also embrace the idea of mild modifications to classic vehicles. There is still a definite differentiation between a
“restomod” and an all-out hot rod, but the lines have been subtly blurred.
This compilation of restoration products that were introduced at the 2010 SEMA
Show runs the gamut from traditional numbers-matching reproductions to modernization components for handling and power. We’ve also interspersed comments from the
owners and executives of some of the industry’s leading restoration specialists. Both say
a lot about how the marketplace has changed.

I’m starting to see a
slowdown in the restoration of the big classic
cars—Packards, V12
Cadillacs and other
depression-era cars
from the ’30s. Most
of them have already been restored, and
today’s consumers don’t really remember
them. I’m seeing a lot more ’50s and
’60s and even ’70s cars that are going the
restomod route. The owners are looking
to keep the exteriors pretty stock, but
they want upgrades, such as overdrive
transmissions, four-wheel disc brakes and
modified suspension to handle driving at
highway speeds.
I’m also getting questions from people
who have bought an older restoration
that they want to have freshened up.
They want very mild body modifications
and basic cleaning up. People today
tend to use these cars, so they are much
more concerned with being able to
drive them.
That’s part of the business now. You
need to be pretty diverse to survive in
this market, and you have to be able
to provide one-stop shopping. Whether
the shop subs out some of the work or
handles the whole job on its own, people
want one shop to take care of the project
all the way through.

The
restoration
market seems to be
recovering well from
the recession. The
biggest trend is the
increase in the restoration of later-model
vehicles. When I first started in this market 30 years ago, it was believed by many
of us that anything newer than ’72 would
never be restored.
There are fewer “pure” restorations
being done by amateur restorers. Most
backyard restorers make small changes
to items, such as the wheels and sound
system. There are exceptions, but the
great shops in our industry do most
pure restorations.
I have seen a major increase in restomods that retain the look of a classic
with the dependability and power of
a modern car. The truck and the nontraditional car markets—four-door cars,
sedans, station wagons, etc.—have also
both seen significant growth.
The sky is the limit now. Retailers and
shop owners have choices. There are very
few parts in 2011 that retailers don’t have
several brands to choose from. The flip
side is that there are some sub-par parts
on the market, and sometimes there is a
reason that a great deal is so cheap.

The most important
trend in the restoration industry today
is that manufacturers
are reproducing exact
OEM sheetmetal parts
and entire bodies,
making it much easier to restore a vehicle
to original specifications. Shops are no
longer required to handcraft parts and
patch bodies on their own. That’s a huge
time saver, plus it gives a restoration shop
the ability to put out a far superior product. With both 100% restorations and
restomods, builders must perform ample
research to find the best manufacturers
of the parts that are required to complete
the job and meet the customer’s needs
and expectations.
As technology has increased the ability to manufacture quality, period-correct, OEM-style parts, the restoration
market has boomed. My biggest fear in
2011 is that rising fuel costs could slow
the upward trend in the market. Many
people who might be considering buying
parts or restoring vehicles could hold off,
since these are luxury items. Most shops
will need to be more conscious of product costs and shop overhead if fuel prices
stay as they are and restoration projects
begin to diminish.

Factory-correct and numbersmatching elements remain significant
trends in restoration. Those two factors
determine not only a car’s originality,

into the finest details of these builds to
make them what they are. Restomods
lean more toward the user-friendly idea

of cool fuel injection and computerfriendly transmissions.

We’re seeing more
preservation of original cars rather than
just restoration; there’s
growing interest in
maintaining original
paint and other features of vintage vehicles that have survived. Among the restorations, we’re
seeing fewer cars that are “over restored”
and increased interest in authentic restorations that accurately replicate what the
factory did.
A wider variety of cars are becoming
projects lately. We’re seeing more vintage
Cadillacs, Rivieras and other fullsize cars
of the ’60s and ’70s, along with more of
what might be considered late-model classics, such as Fox Mustangs. Restomods are
really picking up as driving events such
as Goodguys’ autocross program help to
promote interest in improved handling
and braking, which the aftermarket has
really embraced.
A lot of people are searching for the
next collector car, and there’s growing
interest from people who are not necessarily traditional enthusiasts who may
have come across an old car their parents
or grandparents had. One indicator of
this is that our Classic Car magazine is now
our fastest-growing title. Those buyers
often want to refurbish and preserve those
cars rather than completely restore them.

In the restoration
market today, anything goes! Our shop
continues to see sentimental restorations—
cars that belonged to
a father, grandfather
or other family member—as well as
diversity. We recently received an ’81

one during his college years but couldn’t
afford it. Now he can.
For 100% restorations, the keywords
are details, details and more details.
Everyone with an Internet connection
has become an expert on colors, models
and how many of certain models were
made. If you are restoring a car to
original, you must be able to document
the build.
With restomods, “less is better.” While
my shop continues to see them, they are
not the over-the-top cars of ’04–’08.
Customers are choosing which areas they
want to modify and are overlooking others in order to save dollars.
There are many inferior components
in the marketplace today, but completing
a car with them will leave a black eye on
the shop and a bad taste in the customer’s
mouth when they fail. Work with your
suppliers; understand their parts and
labor warranties. And don’t overlook service work! With more and more restored
cars on the road, car owners need qualified shops to service them.

People are starting to

Necessity always fuels change, and the
move to better metallurgy, better molds,
better tooling and design was bound to
happen. The recession just made it happen earlier. At the same time, people are
still being offered substandard parts for
good-quality prices. There is still a lot
of crap in the market, and some changes
take more time than others.
The greatest opportunities in today’s

Musclecars are still
hot, especially Mopars
from the late ’60s to
early ’70s. However,
there also appears to
be a correction in the
value of classic vehicles. Artificially high prices for some
classics have come back to appropriate
market levels. This helps get more individuals into the hobby and is therefore
good for the whole industry.
Restomods are in greater demand, a
trend that adds modern technologies
to classic cars, including improvements
for gas mileage. As car owners drive
their investments more, they are looking for greater comforts, including air
ride, digital gauges, air conditioning and
higher-end audio equipment. They want
a new-car feel with the classic look.
Many of the cars I see at cruises now
are from the late ’70s or ’80s—cars that
many enthusiasts grew up with. These
cars were bought at relatively cheap
prices and have low to moderate value,
making the owners reluctant to put a lot
of money into them.
Consumers also expect more/better customer service for the same price
and are looking for greater assistance,
input and service from their retail shops
and installers. That’s why it is more
important than ever for retailers to have
close relationships with their manufacturer suppliers.
