Performance in the cold – Coldwear
Winter sport athletes are often exposed to severe cold stress during
training and competitive events in the winter season. Cold and windy
ambient conditions may have an effect on physical performance and
result in impaired performance.
In many athletic events where speed is crucial, low air resistance is
important. This has caused clothing to be thinner and more tight-fitting
such as the skiing suits used by the cross-country skiers during
competition.
The objective of this project is to investigate the effects of whole-body
exposure to cold ambient conditions on thermoregulatory responses and
selected performance-related physiological variables during sub-maximal and maximal exercise. The results should be used as guidelines for
further development of new materials and sensor solutions for
improving performance and comfort for winter sport athletes.
One of the goals is to find the limit values for muscle and skin
temperature in relations to physical performance for XC skiers. This is
needed in order to develop optimal solutions for insulation and wind
protection in XC clothing. Studies show that the front side of the body is
especially exposed to cold and wind due to high velocity and associated
wind.
The physics of insulation
Insulation is obtained when the conduction and radiation of heat is
reduced. Materials of low heat conductance are good insulators. Air is
such a material, therefore when one wants to increase the insulation
properties in garments one way is to capture air in the garment.
Wind that is ventilating a material shifts the captured air. Depending of
the ambient temperature this ventilation may give a cooling or warming
effect.
When operating with competition apparel for XC clothing the thickness
of the garment is minimal. In addition the apparel is snug fit to the user
body. Such a fit leaves very little room for insulating air. For that reason
the mesh is a preferred structure as it manages to trap insulating air

TEMPERATURE GUIDE
The Cold Wear project has enabled us to develop a temperature matrix that provides an overview of suitable uses for the various products. The
matrix is designed as a guide to help skiers more easily decide what to wear depending on the weather conditions. The colour scheme is the
same as the well-known colour scheme Swix has been using for ski wax since 1946.
Each product has an extra hangtag that clearly shows the intended temperature range for using the product. The hangtags are as follows:

In 1946, Swix revolutionized the use of ski wax by

system. We have applied the same systematic
