Sparks From The Campfire-Alumnae Newsletter
Sparks from the Campfire-Alumnae Newsletter Page 2 February 2012 From The Editor One of the things about Greystone that has always amazed me (and constantly impressed my father) is its network of friends and connections. Greystone friends played a key role in my choice of high school, university, and college sorority. The CEO of a company where I worked for 10+ years was the husband of a fellow 1969 Cabin 4 camper. I have camp friends around the country, especially in the South and Midwest. As I plan an upcoming drive from Tennessee to Florida, I am excited about all the Greystone friends I will see en route and once there. Sometimes I even make Greystone connections while traveling overseas. As I climbed the interior dome of the large Protestant cathedral in Dresden, Germany in December 2011, I met a retired teacher who told me she had lived in Chatham VA for a year in the 1980s. I guessed that she had taught at Chatham Hall and asked if she knew Alice Cromer (Greystone 1960s-70s). After recovering from her surprise that I knew Alice, she spoke fondly of her and asked me to convey a greeting to her. There are so, so many among us who are blessed to have lifelong friends whom we met at Greystone. I love the story of the Upper 8 group from 1956 as told on page 8! I remember 1920s campers Chopin Hudson Hanks and Margaret Shelby Erdman who attended the 1999 Greystone reunion and performed a skit at our talent show. On Greystone’s website are posted photos of current campers who travelled across the country to see their camp friends. The tradition continues. “To the girls, we’ll not forget them through the years that lie ahead. To Greystone where we met them and the wonderful times we’ve had…” Elizabeth Abernathy (1960s-80s; 2010) 2011 Alumnae Reunion: Elizabeth Abernathy and Libby Miller 2011 Main Camp Honors ODDS (2,047) EVENS (2,246) Capt.: Catherine Lowery Capt.: Juliette Fry Lt.: Meredith Douglas Lt.: Anna Zodin Best All Around: Juliette Fry Virginia Sevier Hanna Honor Council Cup: JaneAnn Laffitte* PERMANENT HONOR COUNCIL Mary Katherine Abele Georgia Lydon Rachel Baker Grayson Mann Sarah Bowron Chandler Massey* Mary Katherine Bradley Nina McCallie* Kathryn Brown Virginia McNeill* Caroline Bullock Cara Messina Elizabeth Buterbaugh Caroline Miller* Hays Bynum Sara Moran Missy Byrd Martha Nixon* Grace Caswell* Peyton Patterson* Laney Coker* Caroline Penland* Carson Creasy* Meredith Perot Meredith Douglas Elle Prosterman Maddie Dugan Leah Rhodes Hannah Farley Mallie Robinson* Juliette Fry Abby Schwing Porter Grant Emily Shirer Lauren Griffin Tate Sieber Landon Holt Bridget Sivewright Jan Johnston Barbara Smith* JaneAnn Laffitte* Kathleen Smith* Rachel Land* Lucy Banks Smith Madeline Lansing* Robin Tinglin Jenna Lindsey* Lydia Turbeville Monica Little Hannah Williams Caroline Lowery Anna Zodin * See p. 9-10 for family members who attended Greystone The Honor Council voted to send the campers’ Sunday offering to: Reformed University Fellowship for David Speakman (Davidson), Emma Williams (Texas), and Tim Udouj (Furman); Lunch Box Ministry (food for needy children in Hendersonville NC, where counselors Pete and Carolyn Davis volunteer); two children through World Vision. 2011 Greystone Campers Sparks from the Campfire-Alumnae Newsletter Page 3 February 2012 Second Annual Great Day 5K Race Reunion Weekend Breakfast Club/The Great Day 5K Race Saturday began with Jimboy’s leading Breakfast Club. She broke two Appalachian Trail though-hike records: 1. the female record (which she set in 2008) of 57 days, 8 hours, and 35 minutes and 2. the male record of 47 days, 13 hours, and 31 minutes, set by Andrew Thompson in 2005. Logistics and Challenges After a year of planning, Jennifer’s journey began at 4:06 a.m. on June 15, 2011 at Mt. Katahdin, Maine and ended at 3:26 p.m. on July 31, 2011 at Springer Mountain, Georgia, where she was greeted by approximately 50 cheering family and friends. Jennifer explains her reasons for beginning her hike in Maine instead of Georgia: “I wanted to travel over the trail’s toughest terrain in Maine and New Hampshire during the longest days of the year. I also wanted to hike towards home. Because I grew up in the Southeast, I know the trail better south of Pennsylvania, and I had more help and support in the Southeast.” Jennifer’s primary support was provided by her husband, Brew, who drove his Toyota Highlander packed with gear to meet her at parking lots and trail crossroads during each day and for most nights. Her mid-day stops were for only 10 to 15 minutes, just enough time to eat. She carried as little as possible - sometimes just a water bottle and a cell phone. On some days she carried a full pack with a sleeping bag and tent so that she could sleep on the trail. She ate 6,000 to 7,000 calories/day, including fast food cheeseburgers, chocolate milk, fruit smoothies, and Clif energy bars. She wore out five pairs of hiking/running shoes. National Recognition National recognition of Jennifer’s record quickly followed the hike’s completion. She and Brew were interviewed on CNN Headline News and the CBS Early Show, and she also appeared on The 700 Club. Her record setting hike was noted on Sports Illustrated’s website. Ultrarunning Magazine named her accomplishment the top female performance of 2011. She was also selected as one of ten 2012 National Geographic Adventurers of the Year. Greystone alumnae spread the word to vote for Jennifer as the People’s Choice National Adventurer of the Year on National Geographic’s website as she competed against a snowboarder, mountain clumber, skier, kayakers, and other athletes from around the world. The winner will be announced in February 2012. According to National Geographic, “For the past 40 years, men have held the Appalachian Trail record. In the last 20 years, it’s been confined to an elite club of ultra runners who typically covered the requisite 30 to 50 miles per day in an 11- to 13- hour period. Conventional wisdom suggested that breaking the record would mean running faster with the same strategy. And a new record holder would most certainly be male….Pharr Davis took the standard strategy and turned it upside down … by hiking for 16 hours a day…” When interviewed by National Geographic, Jennifer noted, “Most people told me … there was no way I was going to set the overall record, that the record would always be held by a male who was an elite trail runner….There was a solid group of people who believed in me… Having that support network was invaluable.” Walking from 5 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., she began and ended each day walking in the dark and, thus, was on the trail for both the sunrise and sunset, when there are few people but more animals. She saw moose and 36 bears, including 14 bears in one day. “I loved seeing black bears… It was like taking an energy shot if I got to see a mama black bear and her two cubs.” According to Jennifer, “The first two weeks were extremely painful. I had to deal with shin-splints, hypothermia, and a really bad stomach bug. There were several times were I thought the hike would end, or that I would be forced to quit, but God always provided the right encouragement at the right time to keep me going.” Brew also encouraged her to continue, especially given that she was on schedule to break the record. One of the hike’s highlights came at Clingmans Dome in Tennessee. “I got there just after sunset. There was this afterglow in the Smokies. You could see the lights of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Usually there are a lot of tourists, but I was up there all alone. It was still and silent.” Jennifer Pharr Davis, June 2011 (continued on page 7) Sparks from the Campfire-Alumnae Newsletter Page 7 February 2012 Hiking History Jennifer has hiked more than 11,000 miles of long-distance trails and has hiked on six continents. In addition to the Appalachian Trail, her hikes include the 2,650 Pacific Coast Trail from Mexico to Canada, Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Machu Pichu (Peru), Wales, Scotland, and Australia. Years At Greystone Jennifer is the fourth member of her immediate family to attend Greystone. Her aunt, Vee Valentine Lyons, was the 1958 Best All Around camper. Jennifer’s mother, Barbara Valentine Pharr, was a camper in the 1960s and headed the landsports department in the mid-1970s. Her aunt, Suzanne Pharr, was also a camper. A native of Hendersonville NC, after graduating from Samford University in 2005 on a tennis scholarship, Jennifer returned to western North Carolina and soon afterwards hiked the entire Appalachian Trail over five months using the traditional strategy of carrying a backpack, tent, and provisions. Having a degree in classics, she chose a trail nickname of Odyssa. According to Jennifer, “I had a life-changing experience the first time I through-hiked the Appalachian Trail. I was 21. I hiked by myself. I really knew nothing about long-distance backpacking… I got struck by lightning... I had my eyes freeze shut in a snowstorm… It was the hardest five months of my life. But as time passed I realized how much I had changed. I had experienced so much positive growth. It left me longing to go back to the trail.” Jennifer excelled as a Main Camp camper from 1992 until 2000 and received the 2000 Best All Around camper award. She served on Greystone’s counselor staff in 2002. After college, in her role as Greystone’s archivist, she digitized many photos from the camp’s earlier years. In her second Appalachian Trail through-hike soon after her June 2008 marriage to Brew, she set a women’s record of 57 days. She remembers, “Afterwards it occurred to Brew and me that there’s no reason why women can’t hold overall time records on a trail because it’s really not about speed or strength; it’s all about endurance, consistency and efficiency and knowing your body and your trail.” Author/Owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company Jennifer’s 2010 book, Becoming Odyssa, described her first Appalachian Trail through-hike.” She has also written guidebooks, including Best Hikes Near Charlotte, Best Easy Day Hikes Charlotte, and Five Star Hikes Asheville. Her record breaking 2011 hike is chronicled in Brew’s 46 Days: Keeping Up With Jennifer Pharr Davis On the Appalachian Trail. When asked about the difference Greystone has made in her life, Jennifer replied, “My desire to push my physical limits and be outside in nature was very evident at Greystone, as I always wanted to see how tired I could make myself during the day. My activities always included track, advanced basketball, advanced tennis, swimming, wall, and lots of other landsports... JimDaddy and Libby have had a huge impact on my life. JimDaddy encouraged me to always do my best and use the gifts that God gave me to their fullest potential. Libby taught me to be gracious, kind, and faithful while pursuing excellence. One of the phrases that kept coming to my mind, when deciding to go back and try for the overall record was something that Jim Daddy said at Breakfast Club: ‘If you never fail, then you haven't set your goals high enough.’” Significance of Setting Record in 2011 Completing ONE through- hike of the Appalachian Trail during a lifetime is an impressive feat. Each year approximately 500 hikers hike the entire Appalachian Trail with an average time of 5 to 7 months, and only a quarter of through-hikers are women. Jennifer has now hiked the entire Appalachian Trail THREE times. The significance of her setting the overall Appalachian Trail time record sinks in when one calculates that she averaged walking 47 miles per day for 46 days. Congratulations! In early spring 2008, Jennifer founded Blue Ridge Hiking Company (www.blueridgehikingco.com), an Asheville company with the mission of “making the wilderness accessible and enjoyable through written and spoken word, instruction and guiding.” She offers coaching, guiding, and public speaking services. She says, “Hiking is not only something I enjoy, it’s my passion, my career and my calling…I hope to elevate awareness of the sport and the outdoors and to get more people involved in sharing a similar passion.” The blogs on her business’ website offer insight into what she has learned through her long-distance hikes, especially about gratitude for life’s conveniences and daily blessings. In one of her fall 2011 blogs, Jennifer wrote, “The trail has helped me to become more self-confident, patient and accepting. This summer, the trail taught me to live in the moment, appreciate the small things, and never lose sight of hope.” Brew and Jennifer (Pharr) Davis, July 31, 2011, Springer Mountain, Georgia (Appalachian Trail’s southern terminus) Sources for this article: BlueRidgeNow.com; www.digtriad.com, www.citizentimes.com; www.nytimes.com; National Geographic; Sports Illustrated Sparks from the Campfire-Alumnae Newsletter Page 8 February 2012 1956’s Upper 8 Campers There are many, many groups of lifelong Greystone friends who became close as older campers. It is unusual to find a large group whose close friendships began as younger campers in the same tentalow. That is the story of six Upper 8 campers (plus one Upper 6 camper) who met as twelve year olds in 1956. Staying in contact for 50+ years, these alumnae have met for mini-reunions in Blowing Rock NC, Jacksonville Beach FL, Litchfield SC, Santa Fe NM, Emerald Isle NC, and New York City (twice). They celebrated their 50th birthday year at the 1994 Greystone 75th year reunion. The group is comprised of Gail Price Fine (Santa Fe NM), Jean Ulmer Brinkman (Jacksonville Beach FL), Craig Harris McDaniel (Raleigh NC), Edith Buice Carpenter (Wake Forest NC), Toler Yates Edwards and Frannie Pierce Martin (Charlotte NC), and Judy Payne Grey (Upper Montclair NJ). Many thanks to Craig for sharing a photo of the group in New York City in October 2011. Sparks from the Campfire-Alumnae Issue Page 12 February 2012 Announcements Accessing Greystone’s Website Greystone’s Website address is: www.campgreystone.com. The recently enhanced website includes features such as an interactive map of the campus, links to the Greystone iPhone and iPad “app,” information about The Great Day Fund, and many photos. Additionally, if you log in using your email and password, during camp sessions you may view photos of campers and read Jimboy Miller’s daily postings. If Greystone does not have your current email or street address, please go to the Alumnae section of the website and follow the “Update us” link to keep us current on your information. If you are new to the website, click on “Create An Account” under the log in screen. Alumnae Mailing List If you hear of someone who did not receive this Sparks and wishes to stay in touch with Greystone, please ask her to contact Greystone. The Greystone Wait List Greystone’s reenrollment rate of over 85% has led to a long wait list for almost every session and few spaces available for new campers. Every camper is placed on the wait list according to the date her application is received. Places are awarded according to grades having spaces available. If you are looking at Greystone, it is essential for you to complete an online application as early as possible. You might have a year’s wait before a place opens, but your deposit is always fully refundable, so there is no risk in saving a place. You may download an application from our Website (www.campgreystone.com) or call the camp office and we will send a packet.
