John Paul II High School Friends and Family,
We are pleased to present the accompanying summary of the financial
position and performance of John Paul II High School for the fiscal year
ending June 30, 2014. The school continues to be strong financially, as
evidenced by the increase in net assets and positive cash flow for the fiscal
year.
The cash balance increased by $1.5 million over the course of the year.
Much of this increase is the result of the Templeton family continuing their
legacy of giving by donating more than $1 million toward the Leadership
Endowment Fund, which was established in 2010 to award partial scholarships to
incoming freshman who demonstrate leadership and academic excellence. The
remainder of the increase in cash is due to increased tuition billings and
collections compared to prior years.

North texas giving day -- 9.18.14
2014 JPIIHS Ryder cup
Thank you to our JPIIHS Community for your generosity on North Texas Giving Day, 9.18.14. The
funds donated on this exciting day helped us to exceed our own giving day record by raising more
than $266,000 in 18 hours. The 682 gifts received allowed us to finish in second place in the school’s
division and resulted in an an additional award of $3,000. Most impressive, out of 1,580 nonprofits
competing for donations, JPIIHS came in 10th overall in total number of donors!
This historic display of philanthropy in support of our Annual Fund further demonstrates your belief in our vision and mission.
Every student, teacher, program and department on campus benefits from this most important fundraising event. As Mr. Poore
wrote earlier this year, “Years from now, JPIIHS students who aspire to make the world a better place will know that their
education was made possible by generations of families who shared through the Annual Fund. They will know that those who
came before them are behind them all the way.” Your generosity is an inspiration to our faculty, staff and administration.

JPIIHS Students collect more than 1,000 Jars of peanut butter
Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere made a guest appearance at John Paul II High School on September 30 to celebrate the
school’s efforts toward the North Texas Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids program. Students answered a call from LaRosiliere,
who challenged the high school to collect 1,000 jars of peanut butter within one week to donate to the program that
helps feed Plano ISD elementary students throughout weekends during the school year. More than 1,000 jars covered
the letters ‘JPIIHS’ at the center of the school’s gymnasium as the mayor addressed the students at a special celebration.

Lucy Santora '16 wanted to find a way to leave her mark at JPIIHS. After speaking with her AP
Environmental Science teacher, Mr. Benjy Wood, she developed an initiative to reduce the amount
of plastic water bottles on campus by installing water bottle filling stations. She spoke with multiple
companies and found Elkay, which has products on many campuses. “The corporate office was very
generous when I asked for a donated station for the pilot,” said Lucy. “I am excited to keep track of
the number of plastic bottles saved through the green ticker feature on the stations. Fewer bottles
translates to water, oil and money that would have been used in their manufacture and transport.”
Lucy hopes to raise money for the project through t-shirt and water bottle fundraisers as well as
corporate donations. “I wanted to find a way to use my passion for the environment to give back
to JPIIHS,” she said. “During my application interview in 8th grade, the last question Mr. Eldridge asked was ‘When you
leave school on the last day of your senior year and look back at the building, how will you have changed it?’ I replied
that I would have “changed it for the better,” which is the textbook correct answer. What Mr. Eldridge didn’t know is that
I intended to make good on my promise. This project is how I am honoring that commitment.”

Mallory “Bobby” Bobzien might be the most well-known face on campus. As
Senior Class President, you could have heard her representing the Class of 2015
during her speech at Class Commissioning. You might have seen her serving as
cantor in choir at all-school Masses. She could have led you on a tour as a JPIIHS
Ambassador. If you were at our Homecoming game this year, you definitely saw
her as she was crowned Homecoming Queen by Mr. Thomas W. Poore.
Bobby epitomizes the JPIIHS student; involved in the school and
community and committed to leadership and service. She runs cross country and
track and is a member of Prayer Warriors, Pro-Life Club, SADD, NHS and the TriM Music Honor Society. Somehow, she finds the time to hold a part-time job at
Fajita Pete’s. Last summer, she was selected to go on the Diocesan Mission Trip to
Nicaragua, where Coach Jamie Dewitt got to know her. “Bobby is a vibrant leader, who is always willing to go out of her way to help
others,” said Dewitt. “I truly believe her attitude and personality is contagious and am grateful that she was chosen to travel on the
mission trip with us to Nicaragua this summer.”
She has thoroughly enjoyed her time at JPIIHS and knew it was the place for her early on. “As an 8th grader at St. Paul, I
shadowed a student here and thought everything about the school was super cool: the teachers were really nice and made class
interesting, the food was delicious, and the kids actually got to chew gum during class!” she said. As for what’s next, she’s not
exactly sure. “I’ve applied to eight colleges; my tops are Texas A&M, University of Dayton and Purdue University,” she said. “I’m
planning on majoring in Biochemistry with a Nutrition minor. If possible, I also want to minor in Spanish.
I’m hoping to travel abroad to a Spanish-speaking country sometime in college and participate in some
sort of study/service program. I think I would be happy in just about any place. It would be really cool to
work on researching and bringing nutrition opportunities to parts of the world that aren’t as fortunate as
we are here in Plano, with stocked-up grocery stores on every corner.”
Wherever she ends up, Bobby will take a piece of JPIIHS with her. “High school, just like every
other part of life, is part of a learning experience,” she said. “St. John Paul II is an especially amazing
person to look up to and strive to live like, and I consider myself lucky to have been reminded of it every
day for the past four years. I’m going to at least try to be a little selfless and child-like as St. John Paul II
was throughout his life.”

staff profiles
Connor spencer, Class of 2016
Connor Spencer arrived at JPIIHS because of something that didn’t even exist at the time - a JPIIHS hockey
team. “I was in Frisco ISD when some friends on my select hockey team talked about going to JPIIHS and
starting a team there. My parents and I did some research and thought it was a great school.”
Not only was Connor a member of the first JPIIHS hockey team, he’s become involved in every aspect
of the school. He serves as Key Club President and is a member of NHS and the Debate Team. To continue
his tradition of starting new things at JPIIHS, he organized the first Veterans Day Breakfast last year as a
sophomore, and planned the second one this year. Oh, and he’s on the JPIIHS golf team as well.
As impressive as that all is, Connor really shines outside of JPIIHS and is a great representative of
our school to the community. He’s a member of US Congressman Sam Johnson’s Congressional Youth
Advisory Council, is training for his pilot’s license, and was selected to attend the Society of American
Military Engineers and the US Air Force Engineering and Construction Camp in Colorado Springs last year.
This year, he was a speaker at the Society of American Military Engineers Luncheon. Connor hopes receieve a nomination to attend
the Air Force
Academy in Colorado Springs, major in aerospace engineering and pursue a career as a fighter pilot. “There’s a seven year
commitment to the military after the Academy, but I want to make it a career,” he said.
JPIIHS will always hold a special place in his heart. “I like the fact that JPIIHS is preparing me for college and that the
administration cares about the students and their opinions,” he said. “The school has taught me commitment to serving others and
to be a part of something bigger than myself. JPIIHS has given me the knowledge and tools I need to excel in a competitive
environment and to be a leader.”

Brendan Coughlin ‘16 has
added to his already-busy
junior year schedule by joining
a travel hockey club, Hockey
Club Dallas. The team travels
nine times during the school
year, usually from Thursday to
Sunday or Monday to play in
tournaments. This year’s trips
include Chicago, Detroit,
Minneapolis and Colorado. “At
the beginning it was a struggle
to find a balance between
traveling and schoolwork,” said
Coughlin. “But I’ve figured out that I have to make time for
it. I wrote an essay between two games once.” Coughlin,
who wants to play hockey in college, says this is the best
way to get in front of scouts. He is also a member of the
JPIIHS hockey team, so he has to make sure he manages his
time well. “My teachers have been understanding,” he said.
“They’ve been really nice about it!”

Michael Petri ‘10 graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in Mechanical Engineering, and is pursuing an
accelerated Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Last semester, he participated in a product design team in the Agile
Product Design Program. His team designed an after-market wheelchair accessory called the Levaté Lift, which can be used to lift
the wheelchair 12 inches and help mitigate reach-related difficulties. His team has now created a start-up business and are
trying to raise money to “get it off the ground” so to speak!
How did your team come up with the product?
Our team was tasked with inventing and
designing a product to serve an underprivileged
population. We interviewed many wheelchair
users and asked them to simply tell us about
their daily lives, what the experience of being
in a wheelchair is like, and what they would
improve. Consistently, they indicated that they
encountered height-related difficulties quite
frequently and that their current methods for
coping with those difficulties were ineffective.
that aspect of the project and design. However,
each team member is encouraged and
expected to contribute in a variety of ways;
financial analysis, physical design, aesthetics,
market research, etc., so I adopted each one of
those roles throughout the project’s span.

Through my involvement in a variety of AP
classes and the TRUTH council, I learned how
to “dig deeper” by thinking critically about a wide range of
topics, problems, and interactions, as well as how to focus first on

the person before focusing on the situation at hand.
By using a Human Centered Design process, we've created a
product uniquely tailored to the needs and wants of wheelchair
users. We see wheelchair users themselves as our biggest advocates What's your favorite JPIIHS memory?

period was an adventure. On top of that, my best friend and my
high school crush (and soon-to-be fiancé) were also in the class, so
What was your role on the team?
As a Mechanical Engineering student, I was naturally drawn towards that certainly made the experience one to remember.
