One Last Letter from Father Ken
Fall Outreach
After a successful Welcome Back Mass &
Cookout brought over 300 people to CCM, we
kicked off Catholic Dukes Week and our Fall
outreach! We held events such as a volleyball
tournament, ice cream social, and scavenger
hunt all around campus in order to meet
students where they were.
“I am going away.” That is what Jesus tells His disciples. It is confusing for them,
but He reassures them that it is all part of the Father’s plan. God is not abandoning
them. Jesus would no longer be walking among them, but the Holy Spirit would be
with them so they could continue to grow in faith, and knowledge, and grace. The
Holy Spirit would continue teaching them and remind them of the presence of
Christ in a new way.
As Catholics, we believe in the action of the Spirit through the Church, in the special
gift of grace that comes to those who continue in the footsteps of the apostles as
bishops. At my ordination, trusting in that sense of the Spirit acting through the
bishop, I placed my hands in the bishop’s hands, and promised obedience to him
and his successors. That is part of what it means to become a priest, to come to a
sense of trust in the action of the Spirit, to come to a sense of peace in allowing
God’s will to unfold in ways we don’t clearly understand at the time.
Evangelization
In October, 22 seminarians from Mount Saint
Mary’s Seminary visited CCM, and helped our
students share the love of Christ and the
Gospel with the entire JMU campus! We
brought Christ to unexpected places– we held
Adoration all day on campus, went off two-bytwo to talk to students and invite them into
ministry, and even held a Eucharistic
procession on the Quad.
Jesus tells his apostles, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” And there’s
a peace that comes with that acceptance of God’s will in our lives.
In April, three seminarians were ordained as deacons in the Diocese of Richmond.
It reminded me of my own ordination. There was a point after the consecration,
during that ordination Mass, 13 years ago, when the bishop handed me the chalice
to hold up at the altar. After the consecration, the priest holds up the Body and
Blood of Christ in a gesture of giving it to the Father. And it’s not just the priest
giving the Body and Blood of Christ to the Father, but more importantly, it is
through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ.
It is Christ who gives Himself to the Father. And it is Christ who invites us, through
the Eucharist, to join Him in giving that perfect gift to the Father. And when the
bishop handed me that chalice during my ordination, I could see my reflection in
the gold of that cup, and I had a very real sense that I was in there too. That I was
placing my life in that chalice and offering it to God. Because I had a sense of the
Holy Spirit working through the Church, of God’s grace being with the bishop.
When Fr. McKay passed away in April, he left his parish without a pastor. And the
bishop, trusting in the Holy Spirit, asked me to serve the people of our diocese once
again as a pastor.
Unity
Denise Heisler, our social chair, had the idea
to bring all the Christian organizations on
campus out for a night of Praise and Worship.
The event brought out nearly 100 students in
a night of unity and praise!
It’s difficult to leave such a wonderful community as JMU. But, it’s also a chance to
trust that the Spirit will guide my steps through the decisions of the bishop to come
to a new community that will follow that same Spirit and be part of that same
Church.
It’s somehow fitting in a university community that I’ve been here for four years.
Four years ago, I stood up here and said that I was coming to you as a freshman
campus minister. Now, I can say that I graduate with you too. Though I’ve taken
no classes, and earned no credits, I’ve learned much from you.
Remember, it is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us…
