Special congratulations...

St Mary's congratulates Mr Phillip Nielsen who has
been awarded a Catholic Education Office
Archdiocese
of
Canberra
and
Goulburn
Outstanding Contribution to Catholic Education
award.
This is a very prestigious award with only 12
teachers or schools across the diocese recognised
at this level.
Mr Nielsen has been instrumental in implementing
information communication technology at St Mary's
for seven years. This has included leading teaching
and
learning
using
including
interactive
whiteboards, desktop computers, laptops and more
recently ipads as well as the appropriate
educational software and apps.
As a result of Mr Nielsen’s leadership the present
level of technology at St Mary's is such that each
student has their own dedicated device. This allows
the students instant access to ICT whenever
needed for research, consolidation, presentation
and communication. The students make movies,
combine text and illustrations not possible with
traditional methods and access a variety of
information, including film clips, illustrations,
interactive tutorials and text.
Mr Nielsen has also been very generous with his
time in providing training for his colleagues at St
Mary's but also at other CEO schools.
Mr Nielsen will be a guest at the Catholic Education
Office Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn
awards dinner on a March 14 which will follow a
special Mass and Expo event where he will showcase ICT use at St Mary's.
MAKING JESUS REAL 24/7: This week students
were reintroduced to MJR. By combining MJR and
peer support students have the opportunity to learn,
discuss and reflect upon the weekly theme. This
week the focus was God Moments which are all
those times that we do something that make others
happy. Hoping you experience many God
moments. This would be a wonderful start to Lent.
Project Compassion - families are asked, by little
monetary sacrifices during Lent, to make a
difference in the lives of the poor across the world.
This is the world's largest single charitable appeal,
with the greatest effect - every nation in the world
benefited last year with funds going towards small
development projects which make a difference in
the lives of poor families. Please use the money
boxes during Lent and return them the first week of
Term 2.
BURNING OF THE ASHES with Kindergarten
students at 10.00am on Tuesday 4 March
Parish ladies providing Pancake Tuesday recess for
all students
On Wednesday 5 March we will begin our Lenten
walk with Jesus to Good Friday and Easter by
celebrating ASH WEDNESDAY MASS at12.00
noon with distribution of the ashes.
All welcome.
St Mary’s sport news ...
To our swimmers attending the Archdiocesan
carnival in Narooma on Monday: Bridie White,
Lydia White, Anna Rogers, Jamie Nicholson,
Jack Nicholson, Mackenzie Parkes, Bridie
Heffer and Harrison Arragon. Thank you to the
parents who will be supporting their children at this
carnival. Could these students please make sure to
pack their St Mary’s swimming caps to wear at the
carnival.
To Mackenzie Parkes, Lydia White and Kody
Pilon who qualified for the MacKillop basketball
trials in Wollongong on Friday 7 March.
To Oscar Mason who is attending the MacKillop
tennis trials in Wollongong on Friday 7 March.
STUDENT REPORTS: The Archdiocesan summer
trials were held 2 weeks ago. St Mary's had 7
students trial for 3 different sports, AFL, Tennis and
Basketball.
Jack Nicholson and Rhyle Davis must have really
impressed the selectors with their nomination
sheets and didn't even have to attend the trial that
was held at Queanbeyan to be selected into the
Archdiocesan side. By Bridie
The boys will now travel to Wagga and trial for the
MacKillop AFL side.
Congratulations on your
selection and best of luck at your next trials.
Two Weeks ago Kenz, Lydia, Kody and Jasper
traveled to young to compete in the Canberra
Goulburn basketball trials.
Both groups started off with skills and fitness then
played some trial games. All four players must have
really impressed the selectors and were picked in
the archdiocesan side that will compete against
other dioceses at the Mackillop trials.
Congratulations Kenz, Lydia, Kody and Jasper and
best of luck at your next trials. By Hugo
Oscar Mason was our 7th athlete that attended the
Canberra Goulburn trials and he tried out for tennis.
The event was held in Young.
He completely dominated the day winning 10 sets
and only loosing 3 games in the process. This
result makes him the number 1 tennis player in the
archdiocese, a huge achievement.
He will now travel to Wollongong on Friday and try
out for the MacKillop side. Congratulations Oscar
and good luck at your next trials. By Jasper
TREE INSPECTIONS: With assistance from Fr
Mick, White’s Landscaping and Bland
Shire Council we are in the process of
evaluating the state of the large trees
on our playground. To begin with, a
number of tress that have died or are
dying, will be removed along with a
general clean up of dead wood in other trees.
Happy birthday to Logan Pettit who
celebrates his birthday next Friday.
