Clinical Team Inspires Doctors’ Gift
Dr. Manish Bhandari and his wife, Dr.
Shalini Gupta, have made a significant
donation—the largest ever made by a
physician to The Christ Hospital— to
further prevent and more effectively
treat cancer through precision and
genomic medicine.
The gift was made in honor of Dr.
Bhandari’s father, Sidhraj Bhandari,
who passed away from cancer last
year. The nursing staff and specialists
who cared for Sidhraj, as well as
Sidhraj’s personal dedication to
philanthropy inspired Dr. Bhandari and
Dr. Gupta to give back.
“Philanthropy was an important part
of my father’s life. He flourished in
business, and believed in supporting
the community to help others thrive.
My wife and I felt this would be a
meaningful way to honor him as well
as those who cared for him,” he says.
“This donation exemplifies Dr.
Bhandari’s passion for exceptional care
and the impact physicians can make
when they give. His gratitude for the
clinical team and his desire to improve
lives has filled his heart with selfless
generosity,” says Rick Kammerer,

A medical oncologist in Cincinnati
since 2005, Dr. Bhandari is committed
to achieving the best possible
outcomes for his patients. Through his
gift, he hopes to advance precision
and genomic medicine in the Cancer
Program. In precision and genomic
medicine, physicians provide
uniquely targeted treatments based
on patients’ cancer cells and genes,
focusing on how their tumors will
respond to various drugs, and which
specific therapies will slow or prevent
progression.

The Howes have listened to, guided,
and supported the hospital since 1974,
when Roger joined its Board of Directors.
Roger continues to serve as a Board
Member of The Christ Hospital and has
served in the past as Chairman of the
Board. In addition, he is a Board Member
and past Chairman of the Elizabeth
Gamble Deaconess Home Association,
and was a Board Member and Chairman
of the James N. Gamble Institute of
Medical Research.
“The Christ Hospital was a great
institution when I joined the Board of
Directors 41 years ago, and it has only
become better since then. Today, we
have an exceptional medical staff, the
finest facilities, and are the top choice in
the community for care. To continue this
level of leadership takes support, which
is why Joyce and I chose to step up and
make this gift, ” says Roger.
This gift from the Howes culminates
years of philanthropic support to
The Christ Hospital.

Anniversary Gala Provide
Music and Healing
The Christ Hospital’s 125th Anniversary
Gala was among the city’s largest
nonprofit fundraising events of 2014.
This year, a portion of the proceeds
were used to provide a full year of
Music and Healing programs, five days
a week (Monday-Friday), in the Cancer
Center, Rehabilitation, Orthopaedics,
and Dialysis patient areas.
Numerous studies on music in
healthcare have shown its effectiveness
in reducing pain and stress, as well as
promoting movement and wellness.
Music and Healing programs at The
Christ Hospital bring songs from the
harp, saxophone, and guitar played
by professional musicians to the
bedsides of patients and waiting areas.
Many people have stated that these
programs have helped them overcome
fears and anxieties, find comfort
and hope, and have overall better
healthcare experiences.
“Patients and families have told
me that music is very beneficial for
rehabilitation. I have heard patients
and families say that the music gives
them a positive way to cope with being
in the hospital,” says Sara Kurtz, RN,
Clinical Manager of the Acute Inpatient
Rehabilitation Unit.
The Withrow Legacy Continues to
Make an Impact
For Jo Ann Withrow, The Christ
Hospital is like a second home. Her
late husband, Howard H. (Ward)
Withrow, served on the hospital’s
Board of Directors for 24 years and was
Emeritus for 11 years. He was Senior
Vice President at Fifth Third Bank and
supported numerous organizations
throughout the community.
Ward Withrow passed away in October
2007. Less than a year later, Jo Ann
was diagnosed with breast cancer
and was treated at The Christ Hospital.
In gratitude for the exceptional care
she received and relationships that
have enriched her life, Jo Ann recently
made a generous donation to support
patient care in the Cancer Program.
“This personal gift from Jo Ann
continues years of philanthropic
support to
the hospital from the Withrows. We
deeply appreciate her generosity
and enduring commitment to help
continue our mission,” says Mike
Keating, President and CEO.
Ward’s grandfather, John Murphy
Withrow, MD, played significant roles in
The Christ Hospital’s history, serving as
the first Chief of Gynecology and later,
Chief of Staff for 18 years. He helped
establish The Christ Hospital School of
Nursing, a first for a Cincinnati hospital,
to advance education for women and
healthcare for the community. Further,
in 1900, he led the effort to move The
Christ Hospital out of its cramped
quarters in downtown’s West End to its
landmark location atop beautiful Mt.
Auburn, where a grander and more
spacious hospital was built.
Dr. John M. Withrow also made a
remarkable impact on health and
education throughout the region. He
was a
Trustee of Miami
University for 46
years, and his
commitment
to improving
health
inspired the
university
to name its first
varsity basketball arena, Withrow
Court, in his honor. He was also the
President of Cincinnati’s School Board,
and was instrumental in modernizing
the city’s schools. Withrow High School,
located in Hyde Park, is named in his
honor.
“Ward’s grandfather had an impressive
history at The Christ Hospital and in the
community. He did so much to make
a difference, and Ward was compelled
to continue his legacy through his
service on the Board,” says Jo Ann. “Dr.
Withrow’s portrait has hung in the
lobby of the hospital for many years.
We are immensely proud of our family
history here.”
During the years of Ward’s service
on the Board of Directors, Jo Ann
volunteered at the hospital, helping
to raise money for a variety of needs,
one of which she recalls was a new
ambulance. According to Jo Ann, the
hospital became an integral part of her
life, a place where she and her husband
forged many close friendships.
“The hospital has transformed in so
many ways over the years— it
just keeps getting better.
My gift is a way for me
to help people receive
the excellent care they
deserve,” she says.

Carl H. Lindner, III, Co-Chief Executive Officer/Co-President and Director of
American Financial Group, and his wife, Martha, have given $1 million to the new
Joint and Spine Center.
“Martha and Carl’s generosity helps further elevate the exceptional patient care
experiences The Christ Hospital is known for. We are deeply grateful for their gift,”
says Mike Keating, President and CEO.
The Lindner family has a long and well-known history with The Christ Hospital.
Carl H. Lindner, III himself served on the Board of Directors at both The Christ
Hospital and the Elizabeth Gamble Deaconess Home Association from 1986-1998.
“We gave because The Christ Hospital is close to our hearts, and has always been
there for our family. We are proud to support this important effort, and believe the
Joint and Spine Center will provide amazing care,” says Mr. Lindner.
“We are honored that the Lindners chose to make our hospital part of their
philanthropic legacy, and grateful for this meaningful investment to make worldclass care more accessible to the region,” says Dr. Fred Kahn, Spine Surgeon and
Executive Medical Director of Musculoskeletal Services.

Donations totaling more than $160,000
have enabled The Christ Hospital to
purchase motorized mattresses called,
Hercules Patient Repositioners, to assist
nurses with moving and lifting patients.
At the touch of a button, a sheet rolls
like a conveyor belt to the top of the
bed, lifting the patient upright.
The first prototype was tested at
The Christ Hospital in 2012, and the
product was improved with input
from nurses.
According to the U.S. Department of
Labor, more than 35,000 back injuries
are suffered by nursing staff each
year, more than any other occupation,
from moving and lifting patients.

Chief Operating Officer, says the
Hercules Patient Repositioners are a
“revolutionary solution” to a national
problem.

A fundraising event for The Christ Hospital
Safe Sleep and Breastfeeding Support Program.
Safe sleep practices and support for mothers who choose to
breastfeed are meaningful steps to ensuring babies have the best
possible start to long, healthy lives. All ticket purchases and art sold
at this event will provide infant sleep sacks as well as breastfeeding
support and education to mothers.

Wall
Off the Wall, hosted by The Christ Hospital Foundation Guild, will be a fun, one-of-a-kind
fundraiser where everyone is a winner! Enjoy delicious food, wine, and beer with friends,
and the chance to choose a piece of local art by lottery, right off the wall! In addition to the

was among Greater Cincinnati’s top nonprofit fundraising events of 2014.

Cancer Care: Dr. Manish Bhandari and his wife, Dr. Shalini Gupta made the largest-ever
physician donation to the hospital. The gift, made in honor of Dr. Bhandari’s father, supports
new, targeted treatments for cancer patients.
Heart Care: Dr. Chuck Abbottsmith, a cardiologist for more than 40 years at The Christ
Hospital, donated the full cost of new EECP technology, a non-invasive treatment for angina
and heart failure. His donation is also among the largest recorded gifts by a physician.
The Foundation also found new ways to engage donors, volunteers and other friends…
The Christ Hospital Foundation Guild: The active, passionate volunteers hosted their first
fundraising event, raising money for the Cancer Center’s new demonstration kitchen.
Gamble Family Visit: Descendants of hospital founder James Gamble travelled from
California to Cincinnati to see the impact of Gamble’s philanthropy. Generations of
descendants toured hospital facilities, including the new Joint and Spine Center.
Donor Recognition: The Foundation initiated new donor recognition plaques and tributes,
marking the first time donors have been recognized at the hospital in such a public and
proud way.
Communication: The Foundation launched its first-ever web page dedicated to planned
giving. In addition, two of our print publications received national Gold Aster Awards for
excellence in healthcare marketing and advertising for fundraising.

Gift Makes a Special Connection to Family
Medical student Justin King recently
began his residency at The Christ
Hospital. During his first day, he came
upon a plaque outside one of the
patient rooms inscribed, “Furnishings
donated in memory of Margery L. King
by Laurin T. King, December, 1978.”
Justin recognized the names as his
relatives, but had never met them, as
they had both passed away before he
was born. He contacted his aunt, Carol
King Thomas, to share his discovery,
and she confirmed that Margery

and Laurin King were, in fact, his
grandparents.
According to Ms. Thomas, her mother,
Margery, and father, Laurin, both
received extensive care at The Christ
Hospital. She had all but forgotten the
donation her father made in memory
of her mother until her nephew’s
discovery. While the furnishings have
since been updated, the plaque still
hangs outside patient room 4012.

have been proud of his grandson,
and it is heartwarming to know that
the plaque is still there after all these
years,” says Ms. Thomas.
