Suzanne Middle School
Basketball Courts
Starting in August, Suzanne Middle School
basketball courts will be available for public use.
For more information, please contact the Walnut
Gymnasium/Teen Center at (909) 444-7959.
School Driving Safety
As children return to school this Fall, there is
an increase in school-related traffic. As parents
drop off and pick up their children, the lanes in
front of the schools become congested causing
traffic problems and safety concerns. In order
to keep children safe, please respect the “drop
off lanes” and “no stopping zones.” Please be
respectful of crossing guards as they ensure the
safety of children while crossing the streets. Do not block traffic
and arrange to meet your child in an area that is safe distance
from the school. By observing the rules of the road, we will keep
school zones safe for all kids.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The City of Walnut is looking for
dedicated volunteers interested in
serving the community. Currently
the Walnut Senior Center is
in need of volunteers to work
the lunch program, Bingo Callers and special events
scheduled throughout the year. If you are interested
please call Gabriela Encinas at (909) 598-6200.
A FRESH NEW LOOK IS HERE!
We are excited to announce that the City of
Walnut has launched our new and improved
website! The website (cityofwalnut.org) is
designed to be informative and interactive
while also remaining user-friendly. While we
are excited about the website’s new look, we
are even more thrilled about the website’s new
features that allow visitors to easily navigate the
site. Be sure to check it out!
It’s Your MONEY - It’s Your LIFE - SHOP WALNUT FIRST!
Spending money in Walnut benefits you as well as your community. It’s your choice. Look at the beautiful roads, medians, parks
and facilities your tax dollars help maintain. Your tax dollars also pay for Walnut’s exceptional community programs, special
events and services. By shopping Walnut first you are directly keeping Walnut beautiful. Think of the shopping opportunities that
Walnut provides before shopping in another city. Where we buy gas, groceries and gifts does matter. There are several shopping
centers in Walnut including the Village at Snow Creek, Walnut Hills Plaza and Lemon Creek Village that provide all your shopping
needs. In these tough economic times we need to come together as a community to keep our tax dollars local. Let’s keep our
community strong by shopping in Walnut. Together we can live better. Shop Walnut First!

Holiday Fire Prevention
The following tips on Holiday Fire Prevention is provided
by the Los Angeles County Fire Department:
Selecting and Handling a Fresh Tree
When selecting a fresh tree, the needles should be green
and hard to pull back from the branches. The trunk should
be sticky to the touch. Carefully place the tree away from
any heat source including a stove or fire place. Be sure to
keep the stand filled with water. Lit candles do not belong
on the tree. Trees should be disposed of by recycling them
(see page 6).
Holiday Lights
Holiday lights should be inspected before being installed.
Strands that have frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the
insulation, excessive kinking or wear are considered a fire
hazard. Follow the instructions on the packaging of the
lights when installing. Check periodically to make sure the
strands are not warm to the touch, if so they need to be
replaced. Never leave holiday lights on while unattended.
Holiday Decorations, Artificial Trees and Candles
All holiday decorations should be non-flammable and
placed away from any heat source. This includes artificial
trees. Lit candles should be placed in stable holders and in
a place where they will not be knocked down. Never leave
the house while candles are burning. Do not put lit candles
on the tree. Wrapping paper should not be disposed of in
the fireplace.
Smoke Alarms
Every home should have smoke alarms installed on every
level and every room in the home. Smoke detectors should
be tested monthly and kept clean.

The City of Walnut Urges Residents to Be Water Wise!
THE DROUGHT CONTINUES...UPDATED WATER RESTICTIONS
UPDATE: All Walnut residents are asked to
continue their efforts to save water so we
can reduce water use in accordance with
the new regulations. Despite receiving some
rain, California is still experiencing a severe
drought and the Water Resources Control
Board (WRCB) has extended and revised
emergency regulations to ensure that water
conservation efforts continue through
January 2017.

Don’t toss coffee grounds, kitchen grease, fruit and vegetable
peels, egg shells and other items down the kitchen drain. Even
with the help of a garbage disposal, it can lead to sewer clogs and
wastewater backing up into homes and businesses. While it may
not happen immediately, over time the buildup can result in costly
clean ups and repairs for residents and businesses.
Help avoid the frustration of a clogged sewer by following these simple and no-cost tips:
• The safest way to dispose of fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from the kitchen is to dispose
of it in the trash.
• Use a coffee can lined with a plastic bag to collect kitchen FOG. Make sure the oil is
cool before you pour it in the can so it does not melt the bag. Dispose of the bag in the
trash.
• Mix excess oil with absorbent materials such as paper towels, coffee grounds, shredded
newspaper, or kitty litter.
• Scrap your plate! Toss all leftovers you may have on your plate into the trash and NOT
into the sink and down into the drain.
• When in doubt, dispose of it in the trash.

Senior Excursions
All excursions depart from Parking Lot A (Park N’ Ride Lot) at
20983 La Puente Road.
Senior Excursions are funded through a Community Development
Block Grant, which requires participants to be age 55 or older.
The following scale has been implemented to help you select the
trip that is right for you:
San Antonio Winery & Lunch (Easy)
Since 1917, the historical San Antonio Winery has been the heart of wine
making and wine culture in Los Angeles. It’s
the last producing winery in Los Angeles and
continues to hand craft wines from estate
vineyards in Napa Valley, Monterey, Paso
Robles and many viticultural areas around
California. As the last of more than 100
wineries which once spread throughout Los
Angeles, San Antonio produces countless award winning wines and is one
of the last wineries owned and operated for four generations by the family
who founded it. We’ll dine trattoria-style at Maddelena’s Restaurant nestled
inside the winery offering a warm ambience, unique décor and a delectable
menu. Wine tasting and lunch are included.

Julian & Apple Pie (Moderate)
The winding stretch of Highway 78 east of Santa Ysabel and up toward
the Cuyamaca Mountains may very well be one of the most lovely drives
you’ll ever take. The bends and dips in the road
will bring you to a small town of Julian, California.
This old gold rush town is nothing short of the Wild
West as you might imagine it, and upon arrival,
you might be convinced that somewhere along
the 78, you must have found a way to time travel.
The main drag stretches just a few blocks long and has everything you’re
looking for. The quiet streets hold endless shops, restaurants and artifacts
all giving a nod back to the golden days when time moved slower and life
felt simpler. So, step back in time with us as we visit the quaint town of
Julian, enjoy a piece of famous apple pie from the Julian Pie Company and
just get away from it all for the day. Lunch will be on your own & we’ll stop at
Dudley’s Bakery on the way there and at Tom’s Farms on the way home.

Oak Canyon Hike (Active)
The Walnut Walker’s season hike is to the beautiful Oak Canyon Nature
Center, a 58 acre natural park nestled in the Anaheim Hills. A year-round
stream meanders through the park. Consisting of three adjoining canyons,
four miles of hiking trails traverse one of the few remaining areas of oak
woodland and coastal sage scrub in our region. Native wildlife makes the
canyon their home and is just waiting to be discovered. The Nature Center
is ideal for those who are just stepping in to the wilderness for the first time
or for those more experienced trekkers who are seeking a nice little hike.
Subway lunch is included.
