The late Don Foshee, a founding member and first President of TxDLA, helped pave the way for the birth of what began with about a dozen people gathering to talk about distance learning in 1995, to the largest statewide chapter of distance learning professionals in the United States. During Don’s life he was recognized as a pioneer for over twenty years while he designed, built, and managed some of the largest and most successful distance learning, training, and telemedicine networks in the United States. Positions Don held during his career included President and CEO of Innovative Interactions, Inc.; Director of Strategic Programs for VTEL Corporation; Director of ED-NET; Director of STAR Schools; and Vice President of the TI-IN Network. Upon experiencing a severe illness which eventually took his life, Don focused on using distance learning to accommodate those homebound due to critical illness and/or physical disabilities along with the learning-impaired population. His love of music and songwriting talents drove him to be thoughtful and innovative in the field of distance learning; for example, he launched a Native American Network for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Don will always be remembered as a talented, fun-loving pioneer in the field of distance learning. The Don Foshee Memorial Grant recognizes exceptional ideas and talents that can be applied in a thoughtful, fun, and creative manner and delivered through distance learning. Funds are directed toward finding “backyard treasures” in the spirit of Don Foshee. Grant recipients receive $2,000 and will present on their project at the following year’s TxDLA conference. We are pleased to announce our two recipients of the 2010 Don Foshee Memorial Grant, Pamela Dooley and Benjamin Martin, both of whom used technology to expand the physical limits of learning. Pamela will present the project details on Thursday at 2:00 p.m., Mission B Room. Ben will update the status of his project on Friday at 4:00 p.m., Mission B Room. The 2011 Inductee for the Hall of Fame is Ms. Marci Powell. Ms. Powell’s noteworthy accomplishments: Marci Powell 2011 TxDLA Hall of Fame Inductee • With over 20 years of focused dedication, Ms. Powell is and has been a true pioneer in distance learning. • She was a primary player in the original practices with the Texas Virtual School District, a project involving collaboration between six school districts across Texas. • She has overseen budgets and administration for millions of dollars in grant funding, including Project KIDS (Key Instructional Design Strategies,) a $10 million grant with the U.S. Department of Education that reached thousands of underserved Texas children. • While leading Allen ISD, her district was named, “Lighthouse District for Technology Integration” by the TEA Commissioner of Education, thus proclaiming it an example to be referenced by all districts in the state. • After moving to industry, she continued to crusade for distance learning while training and consulting with educators across all constituencies recognized by TxDLA (K-12, higher education, government, healthcare, military and industry). • She served on manufacturers’ Product Design Customer Councils to help design solutions specific to educators, including interface design for devices used to manage distance learning classrooms. • She led and organized the first TxDLA Regional Groups in the late 90’s. • She created several strong and lasting TxDLA traditions that have promoted the expansion of the largest network of distance learning professionals across the state. The 2010-2011 TxDLA Hall of Fame Selection Committee recommended Ms. Powell for induction into the Texas Distance Learning Hall of Fame. Many positive supporting documents accompanied Ms. Powell’s nomination including support from Texas A&M University, United States Distance Learning Association and Stanford University. “Marci’s advancement from working with one K-12 district to becoming a world leader in industry proves her ability to influence many,” noted the nominator. It is truly an honor for the 2010-2011 TxDLA Board of Directors and the Hall of Fame Selection Committee to welcome Ms. Marci Powell into the Texas Distance Learning Hall of Fame. 14 CONFERENCE COMMITTEE Conference Steering Committee Conference Chair. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
