Welcome, ¡Bienvenidos!, to the 2011 TxDLA Conference and
the Beautiful City of San Antonio!
On behalf of the 2011 Steering Committee and the TxDLA Board of
Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 2011 Annual TxDLA
Conference in beautiful San Antonio, Texas. We are extremely pleased
that you are here. This conference is the most rewarding and enriching of all distance learning conferences because of YOU. Take advantage of these few days to meet and mingle with new and old friends.
Share your experiences and challenges in distance learning.
I am truly honored and privileged to serve as the 2010 President-Elect
and this year’s Conference Chair. I would like to thank the Steering
Committee and all the volunteers that have given precious time to
make the 2011 conference a reality. I also would like to especially

Greetings and Welcome
to a Distance Learning Fiesta!
If you are new to the conference, you are in for a real treat. If you
are a returning member, you already know the advantages of
attending. It is challenging to stay abreast of new technology,
best practice methods or having that valuable network
connection. The Texas Distance Learning Association Annual
Conference includes exciting and innovative sessions with just
enough recreational time to make those connections. Please
take advantage and use this time to learn the newest strategies
and meet new friends. Typically, friends met during the TxDLA
conference turn into lasting relationships which help you grow
personally and professionally.
I have really enjoyed being involved with TxDLA and as the newly
elected President-Elect, I am really excited about taking office July
1, 2011. The 2012 conference will be held April 15-18 at the
Sheraton Dallas Hotel. If you only attend one conference next
year, this is the one!
Cindy Smith

Don Foshee Memorial Grant
This award will be presented on Thursday morning during the General Session.
The late Don Foshee, a founding member and first President of TxDLA, helped pave the way for the birth of what began with about a
dozen people gathering to talk about distance learning in 1995, to the largest statewide chapter of distance learning professionals in the
United States. During Don’s life he was recognized as a pioneer for over twenty years while he designed, built, and managed some of
the largest and most successful distance learning, training, and telemedicine networks in the United States. Positions Don held during his
career included President and CEO of Innovative Interactions, Inc.; Director of Strategic Programs for VTEL Corporation; Director of
ED-NET; Director of STAR Schools; and Vice President of the TI-IN Network.
Upon experiencing a severe illness which eventually took his life, Don focused on using distance learning to accommodate those
homebound due to critical illness and/or physical disabilities along with the learning-impaired population. His love of music and songwriting talents drove him to be thoughtful and innovative in the field of distance learning; for example, he launched a Native American Network for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Don will always be remembered as a talented, fun-loving pioneer in the field of distance learning.
The Don Foshee Memorial Grant recognizes exceptional ideas and talents that can be applied in a thoughtful, fun, and creative manner and delivered through distance learning. Funds are directed toward finding “backyard treasures” in the spirit of Don Foshee. Grant
recipients receive $2,000 and will present on their project at the following year’s TxDLA conference.
We are pleased to announce our two recipients of the 2010 Don Foshee Memorial Grant, Pamela Dooley and Benjamin Martin,
both of whom used technology to expand the physical limits of learning. Pamela will present the project details on Thursday at 2:00
p.m., Mission B Room. Ben will update the status of his project on Friday at 4:00 p.m., Mission B Room.
The 2011 Don Foshee Memorial Grant is funded by TxDLA.

EXECUTIVE PARTNERSHIP COUNCIL
The Executive Partnership Council (EPC) furthers TxDLA’s success in providing peer networking, information, and coordinated communication channels across the broad spectrum of the membership.
Responsible directly to the Board of Directors, the EPC is comprised of members from public and
private sector organizations that have supported, through cash and/or in-kind products or services,
TxDLA’s operations and activities.
Carol Willis
The EPC encourages collaborative public/private relationships and partnerships, fostered in honesty
and integrity, and initiates activities to advance the cause of distance learning, TxDLA, and its members. These activities include collecting and disseminating information regarding distance learning

Jonah Lehrer – hailed as “an important new thinker” by The
Los Angeles Times – is the author of Proust Was a Neuroscientist and the instant bestseller, How We Decide. Captivating, accessible, and never dull, he talks about how we make
decisions – and how we can make better decisions. “Lehrer
ingeniously weaves neuroscience, sports, war, psychology, and politics into a fascinating tale of human decision making,” says Dan
Ariely (Predictably Irrational). “He makes us much wiser.”
Lehrer, 27, has been called “something of a popular science
prodigy,” by The New York Times, a man of “considerable
talents.” A graduate of Columbia University with a degree in neuroscience, Jonah Lehrer
studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar where he received his Master’s Degree
in 20th century literature and philosophy.
Lehrer is a contributing editor at Wired Magazine and National Public Radio’s Radio Lab.
He has also written for The New Yorker, Nature, The New York Times, and The Wall

John Knue
Baylor University
Quote from nomination:
“When John does something, he puts his
heart into it. Involved in TxDLA since
1997, he’s dedicated countless hours just
as he’s done as a volunteer fireman and
in city government. Seven years ago he
organized a “First-Timers” session to welcome new members
and continued to host this popular session for six years. John
has served on the board for six years (two years as an At-Large
member and four as secretary). As secretary, his commitment to
keeping accurate records has benefited not only Board Chairs,
but also presidents who depend on ready-access to past actions.
The model of commitment, John has never been afraid to suggest something because it might be hard work and he’s always
been the first to volunteer.”

The University of North Texas
Quote from nomination:
“The University of North Texas Center
for Learning Enhancement, Assessment,
and Redesign (CLEAR) is on a journey to
create changes in both students and faculty
by transforming large enrollment undergraduate courses using
a specific mix of instructional strategies and delivery format (including small group experiential learning; a media rich, interactive
online environment; and large group lecture). NextGen engages
faculty and enables them to design, apply, and assess innovative
instructional techniques in their courses. The NextGen process
is a carefully choreographed series of events through which
NextGen Faculty Fellows are trained, nurtured, and mentored as
they navigate the redesign process. NextGen students learn in a
challenging and diverse online and face-to-face environment and
more often than not, they develop a positive attitude toward the
academic subject.”

This presentation explores how instructors at Blinn College create a community of engaged learners by integrating lecture capture
technology as part of their online course content. Learn how: (1)
Students use lecture capture technology to independently record
multimedia presentations and upload presentations that are reviewed
online by their instructors and/or peers; (2) Instructors use lecture
capture technology to capture in-class presentations, or pre-record
multimedia lectures/presentations and deploy them online to multiple
course sections; and (3) Lecture capture is used for professional
meetings, online tutorials, and test proctoring. Instructor and

Quote from nomination:
“Five years ago Decatur ISD did not own any distance learning
equipment. Recognizing the importance and impact distance
learning could have on students, leadership allocated funding to place a DL cart on every campus. DISD hired a distance
learning coordinator and trained Library Media Specialists to
be DL resources for the staff. DISD quickly become one of the
top users of distance learning programming in Region XI, using
the equipment for virtual field trips, author visits, collaboration
events, and staff development opportunities. With a determined
vision, Decatur ISD has gone from being “in the dark” about
distance learning to being a leader in the industry. This past year
has marked a transition for Decatur ISD as a consumer of DL
programming to a provider.”

Quote from nomination:
“The UT TeleCampus, established
in 1998, was extremely successful
in its mission to build and deliver
high quality interactive online
courses, degree programs, and support services in its mission to
expand the reach of the UT System. Nationally recognized for its
inter-campus collaborative degree programs and extensive array
of student services offered in support of the distant student, the
TeleCampus also provided a full spectrum of training and support services for the hundreds of university faculty and campus
support staff. With completion rates between 91 to 95 percent,
the TeleCampus served over 60,000 students, promoting student
success, participation, academic excellence and research.”

2010-2011 TxDLA President
Social and Media Theorist
and Author
The best of the big prizes will be given away.
Come say goodbye to another year of TxDLA fun and memories.
Douglas Rushkoff
Social and media theorist and author Douglas Rushkoff is one of today’s most engaging and
perceptive commentators on the impact of technology and media on organizations and society. A
globally recognized thought leader on marketing and internet culture, he explores how communications affect our lives.
The originator of terms and ideas from “viral media” to “screenagers” and “social currency,”
Rushkoff is the author of 10 books on technology, media and pop culture including Coercion, Media
Virus, Playing the Future and Cyberia, the first book on cyber culture. His works have been translated into over 25 languages.
Ruskoff’s Get Back in the Box: Innovation From the Inside Out, is a thought-provoking examination
of the influence of interactive communications on business. He looks at how the new renaissance in creativity and collaboration, ushered in by the internet, gives organizations the freedom to return to core competencies and reconnect with the passion that fuels true innovation.
Rushkoff’s book, Life Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take it Back, was named one of the best business
books of 2009 by The Miami Herald. In late 2010 he released his newest book, Program or Be Programmed.
Rushkoff received national acclaim as the correspondent for the PBS Frontline documentaries, The Merchants of Cool and
The Persuaders. Digital Nation, Frontline’s multiplatform project and television documentary premiered on PBS in February
2010. A columnist for The Daily Beast, United Airlines Hemispheres magazine, and Meeting Professional International’s One+
Magazine, Rushkoff is a professor of media at New York University and The New School.
