Unfortunately with few practical applications to drive it forwards and limited funds the idea faded away. Then in December 1887, another Scotsman, John Boyd Dunlop was watching his son ride his tricycle across an uneven stone cobbled yard and thought how much easier it would be if the wheels were soft and could absorb the bumps. He made a wooden disk and mounted an air filled rubber tube covered with linen cloth on the outside and the tyre industry was born. Welcome to the latest edition of our Tyre Directory, where you will now find many new additions to our range. In response to customer requests we John Boyd Dunlop 1840 - 1921 have also expanded the information in both the Motorcycle and Beaded Edge sections. The range of motorcycle tyres now includes new products from Ensign and Mitas and we have added tyre fitment and pressure information on popular post-war British bikes (see p48). The Beaded Edge tyre section has also been updated and now includes pressure charts, hints on fitting and popular rim dimensions to help customers get the best from their cars (see p50). As many of you will know, Vintage Tyre Supplies has been in the forefront of the industry for almost 50 years, supplying advice and quality products to enthusiasts and stockists around the world. At our base in Beaulieu, adjacent to the National Motor Museum (considered by many to be the spiritual home of the motoring enthusiast), we carry in stock many thousands of tyres and associated products in all the popular brands and fittings for two, three and four wheel vehicles. Tyres can be either fitted beaded edge tyres by our experts here or sent direct to you wherever you live in the world. Many different methods were thought of to mount the tyre onto a wheel and many patents Payment can be simply made by credit card, bank transfer or cheque in were lodged with claims and counter claims from various companies. However the most sterling or euros. popular tyre design to come out was the beaded edge system (popular between As always this brochure has been put together to provide help and 1890-1925). The measurements referred to the overall tyre dimension and bore no reference to the wheel rim diameter. This system was widely used Chris Marchant Managing Director 4 on both cars and motorcycles up to the mid 1920’s when they were superseded by the wired-on system. 5 a brief history Later the crossply markings became standardised and covered the section width and rim diameter. Although used on some motorcycles and light cars, wired-on tyres were commonly fitted to motor For example 5.00-19 was a 5” section tyre fitting on a 19” diameter rim. A practice that has become cars after 1925 and were so named because unlike beaded edge tyres, they contained an more common in recent years is dual and even treble marking tyres, which means that the tyre is a inextensible wire hoop, moulded into the area which contacted the wheel rim. With the help of the compromise between several sizes. For example 5.25/5.50-18 or 4.50/4.75/5.00-17. INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION wired-on tyres well in the centre of the rim, the tyre could be easily fitted over the edge and once inflated could not “blow off” as its predecessor could. Another advance was that they could be used at much lower straight sided tyres pressures performance. Other countries developed variations of this system. In the USA they had for some time been using Early wired-on tyres were, of course, crossply construction and like beaded edge tyres before them, the wired-on system with flat based wheel rims. These tyres were so called because they did not would typically have a 100% aspect ratio. have a ridge or bead at the bottom of the side wall. They used either collapsible wheel rims or special markings on early wired-on tyres from 1925 rims with removable side flanges and a rubber flap to protect the tube. Like early European tyres providing significant improvements in ride quality and these tyres were measured by their overall dimensions and were noted for their large diameter. An It must be remembered that the development of tyres took place simultaneously in several different example of a straight sided size would be 33 x 5 which would have a 23” diameter rim, or 37 x 5 countries and by different manufacturers. By the very nature of technical development many new which has an even larger 27” diameter rim. ideas were kept secret until they were perfected. The net result of this is a wide variety of size markings on many of the early tyres. Initially the size markings followed on from their predecessors; bibendum the beaded edge tyre. These represented the overall dimensions and were normally in inches. The NOTE: The assembly is made up of a tyre, tube, flap and rim. They not only provide better grip principle, having a similar bead design they are often used to replace earlier crossply tyres. They and road holding but they retain those all important classic tread patterns, therefore it’s worth considering the possible detrimental effects of first appeared as original equipment on some European cars during the 1950’s as they offered fitting a modern “non standard size” tyre to your classic, You may find… improved performance in many areas. Early radials are characteristically more rounded in section • Abnormal wear - caused by the incompatibility of the profile or tread pattern, particularly when you consider the earlier steering and suspension geometry with softer sidewalls and are generally a lower profile (80%) than the equivalent crossply tyre. • Poor response from the road - because modern tyres are less suited to the dynamic characteristics of classic cars a crossply tyre Tyres were measured and marked by section width and rim diameter as the earlier crossply tyres • Reduction in comfort levels - due to greater sidewall rigidity were. However to differentiate them, the section width is normally marked in millimetres. For • And visually, will the tyres look right? example 185R15, this tyre has a section width of 185mm and is designed to fit a 15” diameter rim. It also has an “R” in the description, which denotes “Radial”. Later developments included early radial ply tyres normally have an 80% aspect ratio and are narrow in section. They have further reductions in profile or aspect ratio, an example of this would be 185/70R15, which means flexible sidewalls with very rigid crowns, the shoulders and crowns are also more rounded to allow greater tolerance in that the tyre is 185 millimetres wide, the wall height is 70% of the section width and is suitable axle geometry, and they have a robust construction with high impact resistance helping to provide self damping. On the other hand modern tyres have lower profiles and wider sections, they have more rigid square sidewalls and flat but for a 15” diameter rim. flexible crowns, this is to allow them to operate with much stricter axle geometry normally found in modern cars. speed ratings a radial tyre Road conditions and limited car performance did not warrant recognised speed rating until the tyres of today • Have lower profile and wider sections • Have more rigid sidewalls and flexible crowns • Have flat crowns and square shoulders, normally operating with much stricter axle geometry • Use highly grooved tread patterns (average groove ratio increased to 30%) to improve water clearance 1960’s. Carbon Black, produced mainly by burning crude oil in special furnaces, is used in large quantities in tyre compounds to provide increased strength. 3. Numerous other chemical compounds, including Sulphur, Plasticizers, Accelerators and Antioxidants. natural rubber Tree plantations in various parts of the world, consisting mainly of the Hevea variety, have their sap (latex) collected in cups below small cuts in the outer bark of the trees. This liquid is then coagulated to form solid slabs of natural rubber. textiles Materials such as Rayon, Nylon, Aramid, Fibreglass and Polyester form an integral part of many tyre casing constructions. These are not woven textiles, but 'sheets' of parallel textile cords. High tensile steel wire is coated in rubber in an extruder. The coated wire is then wrapped into hoops of a predetermined cross section to form the beads of the tyre. This finished bead may have a special tape wrapped around it prior to the apex being bonded to it. calendering Both textile and steel cords are arranged in a flat parallel manner and then have a thin layer of compound applied to both sides (calendering) to form a sheet. This is then cut and reassembled to produce the required reinforced sheets with the cords at predetermined angles across the sheet. These sheets, when superimposed over each other during tyre assembly, create the casing ply and breaker belts (below the tread) required for strength, shock resistance, compliance and durability. building a tyre stage 1 - flat forming The first stage of building a tyre is to wrap the inner air retaining liner onto a steel cylindrical Flat Forming drum, followed by a series of components which will form the 1. INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION 1. Synthetic rubber is formed by the interaction of various chemicals and processes on crude oil. coating tread/breaker assembly. stage 2 - shaping The tread and breaker belts are prepared on a second metal drum to provide a cylinder into which the tubular casing is accurately inflated to form a green tyre ready for moulding. At each stage of the tyre construction great care is taken to apply pressure From the very beginning of construction all ingredients are accurately weighed to ensure the to expel all air between each layer and to consolidate the assembly. uniformity of batch production. primary processing The bringing together of the Base Chemicals, Natural and Synthetic rubber and Carbon Black is undertaken in a 'Banbury Mixer' (in effect a giant food processor), which combines the materials stage 3 - moulding the tyre The totally bald tyre casing is then loaded into a complex metal tyre mould, with all the details of the finished tyre engraved in reverse. into a tough pliable material which is then compressed between rollers to form long sheets. The mould is closed, trapping the tyre within it and a rubber diaphragm is inflated The primary sheets are then processed in a second stage mix, where further additives are inside the tyre. introduced. These additives are a combination of chemicals including Sulphur and the required A combination of high internal steam pressure within the diaphragm and the heated Accelerators. mould produces the tyre tread pattern and sidewall markings moulded into the surface Different compounds, depending on the properties required, now follow one of 3 processing of the tyre. The heat causes a chemical reaction which permanently transforms the routes:- pliable material into an elastic material bonded to the other rubber components and 1. extruding of rubber components. the textile and steel components of the tyre. 2. coating of bead wire. The tyre is then ejected from the mould for cooling, finishing and final inspection. 3. calendering of textile and steel reinforcements. finishing and inspection extruding The compound is heated, then forced under very high pressure through an extruding die. This creates the correct shape to make a tyre's tread, sidewall, apex and other components. 10 All tyres are very carefully examined, often using x-rays, by highly skilled inspectors followed by accurate uniformity control. They are then transferred for storage and final distribution. 11 avon Avon tyres are one of the oldest tyre manufacturers in England, producing their first pneumatic tyre in 1903. The quality and performance of these tyres is legendary and they have been the chosen supplier for prestigious car manufacturers such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Morgan, Land Rover and Aston Martin for many years. Many of the tyres are produced in the original moulds ensuring complete authenticity. road legal race tyres Avon also produce a range of road legal racing tyres in several sizes and patterns, ideally suited for the faster classic car enthusiast who may want to drive to the track. Note: Racing tyres are generally made with softer rubber compounds to provide improved levels of grip, however they may have reduced life if used regularly on the road. After all, they have been around almost as long as motoring itself. They are part of the heritage which fuels your passion. Their founder, John Boyd Dunlop, invented the first practical pneumatic car tyre more than a century ago, in 1887, and his tyres were being fitted to early production cars just three years later. Given that pedigree, you will understand why no tyre company cares more about the traditions of classic motoring than Dunlop. We know that you want not just compatibility, but authenticity. For your classic car, only the genuine article is good enough and Dunlop provides it. The classic range not only offers an enormous choice of it also brings contemporary standards of quality and safety to classic motoring, whilst retaining tyre authenticity. However due to popular demand and in acknowledgement that drive them to and from events Dunlop have carried out a complete test and development program resulting in “E” marking accreditation on certain Vintage racing tyres. Tyre Pressure No firm rules exist on pressures; as car weights, rim widths and circuits vary. However sufficient pressure must be used to avoid structural problems, ‘tuck under’ or ‘roll’ when cornering. We suggest the starting point should be based on the car’s original road going pressures and subsequently adjusted to compensate for over and understeer. Most of us have memories of an old faded photograph showing a long distant relative smiling broadly at the camera alongside their treasured Avon motorcycle. Cars might have led the way but motorcycles were definitely for the masses. Motorcycles provided cheap, affordable transport for a nation hungry to travel. Motorcycling was, and still is, a blend of practicality, enthusiasm, inspiration and adventure. In time motorcycles became more reliable and engines more powerful …adventurers used them to explore faraway places, often chronicling their adventures in books and films like ‘Motorcycle Diaries’, featuring Che Guevara’s travels through South America on a 1939 Norton. More recently, of course, ‘Long Way Round’ featuring the award winning actor Ewan McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman on a trip from London to SIZE TYPE New York (via central Europe), recorded by cameraman Claudio von Planta. beaded edge rims how to fit beaded edge tyres Popular between 1890-1925, beaded edge tyres had a groove on the side which corresponded with a ridge or clinch on the wheel rim and were held together by pressure of air within it, which had to be maintained at sometimes up to 100 psi (7 bar). In Europe these tyres were measured in millimetres. In America they were measured in inches and were called Clincher tyres, the measurements referred to the overall tyre dimension and bore no reference to the wheel rim diameter. This system was widely used on both cars and motorcycles up to the mid 1920s when it was superseded by improved tyre designs better suited to the pace and developments that were taking place within the automotive world. However if this area is allowed to develop a sharp corroded edge it will rapidly cut into the tyre bead. It is also common practise amongst MISCELLANEOUS MISCELLANEOUS restorers to cut this area back to provide a more sympathetic surface. This is a mistake and will lead to premature failure as it drastically reduces the support in this area. RIGHT 50 WRONG WRONG WRONG 51 wheel fitment APPLICATION RIM SPOKES HUB PART NO. They are particularly effective when experiencing compatibility problems between tyre and wheel, and can have different valve positions and types. 3 3 inner tubes The range of inner tubes available today is quite immense, the vast majority are black synthetic rubber and unlike natural rubber are impermeable and have a greater resistance to temperature and chemical breakdown. 3 3 Available in both 42 and 52mm hub sizes and can be used to convert to wire wheels in non standard applications.
