assemble each individual rim from bare metal to the final product.

QUALITY STANDARDS
Borrani’s test and quality control program is probably the harshest and most demanding in the industry. Both
individual components and complete wheels are subjected to grueling test programs.
While FEM analysis is run to certify
the structural strength, countless
laboratory sessions follow on each
individual component. The rim, hub
and wires undergo tests on fatigue,
tensile and yield strength. When test
expectations are exceeded, they move
on to static and dynamic tests: rotating
bending, impact test and alternating
load.
In the end comes the final trial called
dynamic rolling: 2000 km simulation
test with full load, fired in 98 laps of
the famous Nordschleife track in
Nürburgring, Germany.
Borrani processes are UNI EN ISO
9001: 2008 quality certified. The
wheels are approved by the
prestigious TÜV SÜD service
organization and type approved by the
German Ministry of Transportation’s
agency KBA.

The main accessory to a Borrani Classic Wheel is the knock-off (Gallettone). A knock-off is a locking nut that
holds the wheel on its hub. The pressure from the knock-off matches the 20° cone located at the end of the outer
ring of the center-piece, to the bottom 60° cone that is located on the vehicle hub. The cones have a dual function:
(1) the tightening of the wheel and (2) the proper centering.

RESTORATION
Restoration of Vintage Wheels
Wheel restoration work is completed in-house by Borrani Americas specially trained staff. Each restoration
specialists has traveled to Italy and trained at Ruote Borrani’s home office on how to properly evaluate and restore
wire wheels. Not all used wire wheels can be restored. This depends on the general condition, on possible
damages and on the rim thickness. The average cost for restoration services is $750 - $1,200 per wheel.
The official Borrani restoration service includes:
- Repair
- Cleaning
- Re-Polishing of the rim
- Renewal of the identification stamping
- New Spokes
- Re-Chroming of the hub
Painted wheels will be restored to their original
specifications, using the correct paint and color
shades.
If additional parts need to be replaced, such as
the centerpieces it will be considered as extra.
All restored wheels will be printed at the
inside-edge of the rim with a progressive
number and the date of restoration.
The mounting of the non-original, modified or
unprofessionally restored wire wheels on your
car can pose serious risks, can cause harm and
damages and can affect the original approvals
and homologation, as well as the handling and
safety of your vehicle.
Certificate of Authenticity
Since 2010, original Borrani wheels are delivered with a
Certificate of Authenticity. This certificate enables Borrani
to trace all wheels either restored or replacements. An
additional value for your precious classic car.

Stamping
One of the distinctive elements of Borrani Record light alloy rims is the stamping on the hoop. These marks
indicate the specifications of the particular rim. All hoops come with the stamping below except the production
data and applications.
“Historical Stamping” includes the production data and applications markings which identify the
manufacturer’s OEM codes. The historical stamping is by request only for an additional $70 charge.

HOT RODS and CUSTOMS
The hot rod and custom car market has been taking
notice. Each classic wheel is tailor-made per vehicle,
assembled and centered by hand by experienced
craftsmen.
The advantage of hand-made items is the flexibility
given to the manufacturer. Borrani’s engineers have
training and expertise to fit any vehicle with original
Borrani wire wheels and knock-offs.
The process begins with a consultation to determine
the needs of the owner and style of the vehicle. Exact
measurements are taken and a sketch is created of
the rim(s). Once these sketches are approved by the
owner Borrani’s staff goes to work.
The metal is molded, fittings are created, holes are drilled and lacing is complete. The same process and
precision that is performed with all Borrani products. All rims are available with painted or polished alloy.
Knock-offs can be laser engraved with custom images or stamped with the classic markings of Borrani. An
additional charge may apply.

HISTORY
The Borrani story begins with a young and ambitious Italian entrepreneur named Carlo Borrani. Carlo recognized
the potential of a patented invention of the Rudge Whitworth Company in Coventry, England. This patent was for
mounting a wheel on a hub by a unique splined drum, fixed by one central-lock nut. This design enabled an easier
and faster mounting and dismounting of a wheel. After purchasing the patent, Carlo set up shop in Milan, Italy.
Within a year Alfa Romeo, Auto Union, Bianchi and Lancia started to equip their racing and
luxury cars with Borrani wheels. In 1924 a young Enzo Ferrari ran and won the Acerbo Cup
in Pescara with a car equipped with Borrani wire wheels. A partnership was formed and in
years to come Borrani rims would become standard on Ferrari models. Other car makers
such as Lamborghini and Maserati also found the rims to be ideal for their racing needs.
As early as the 1930s Borrani started to experiment with light, rigid aluminum rims
(cerchi DD) to replace the standard steel wheels. This was the beginning of a
technologically advanced way of producing wheels that is still used today.
Carlo Borrani
in 1952 Enzo Ferrari and Cesare Borrani, Carlo’s son, developed an idea to manufacture
special molded hubs. In 1955 the demand for Borrani rims exceeded the current facilities production capabilities
and the company relocated to a facility in Baranzate on the northeast side of Milan.
Thousands of national and international victories were achieved on Borrani wire wheels during this period which is
why we use the phrase...Wheels of Glory!
After a successful period for wire wheels, the cast-aluminum wheel gradually took over the market. Looking for
new ways to stay competitive, Borrani started to mount a pressed steel wheel disc in their existing aluminum rims.
These ‘Bimetal’ wheels, which were produced already in 1950 as CABO wheels, had their fair share of
success and were mounted on famous brands as Alfa Romeo, ASA, Abarth, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati and others.
In the early 1960’s, Borrani wire wheels became an exclusive accessory on these manufacturer’s new models.
Borrani was not only known for their car wheels but the motorcycle industry found their Serie Record/14 better
known as the “H profile” an incomparable product for strength, lightness and precision. Borrani equipped wire
wheels for the most prestigious road and racing motorcycles for over fifty years. Moto Guzzi, Gilera, MV Agusta,
Moto Morini, Aermacchi, Harley-Davidson, Ducati and Laverda all used Borrani Record rims.
Today Ruote Borrani is still based out of Milan, Italy where they continue to manufacture their wheels by hand and
maintain the unique heritage of Carlo Borrani. Enzo Ferrari

BORRANI LOGO
The origins of the famous Borrani hand logo have been a topic of debate over the years. The true origins derive
from Irish Gaelic. The logo was the original design from Rudge Whitworth of Coventry. The Rudge Whitworth
system on center-locking already had an established brand and reputation for the time period. When the patent
was purchased by Carlo Borrani in 1922 it included the logo. The only change made to the original Rudge
Whitworth logo was the location at the bottom. Borrani simply swapped Coventry for Milano.
The round shape represents the shape of a wheel and the lines behind the red hand represent spokes.
But what about the red hand?
The Red Hand of Ulster
Throughout history there have been many discussions on the
origins of the Rudge and Borrani red hand. What is known is
that Daniel Rudge incorporated the “Red Hand of Ulster” into
his logo design for bicycles in the late 1800’s and this hand
was a mythic symbol used in the north side of Ireland - Ulster
where he was raised.
The legend of the red hand goes back to Pagan times when a
mythical tale talks of a Viking king who couldn’t decide which
of his two sons should be the successor to his thrown. To
decide the king arranged a boat race and declared that the
son who touched his hand to shore first would be king.
One brother so desired the kingship that upon seeing that he
was losing the race cut off his hand and threw it to the shore
- thus winning the race and the crown. The hand is red to
represent blood covering the hand.
There are different variations to this tale but the Rudge and
Borrani red hand was taken from this mythical tale.

Standard: Center lock wire wheel with steel rim
Record: Center lock wire wheel with light alloy rim
Bolt-on: special wheel (type S) with direct mounting (wheel bolts)
Transfer Kit: Conversion kit to Rudge center-lock system.
Knock-off: A knock-off or spinner is a locking nut that holds the wheel on its hub. It comes in three shapes
(Octagon, 2-Ear and 3-Ear) and four types (32, 42, 52 and 90).
- Destro (D): Left-hand thread for the right side of the car.
- Sinistro (S): Right-hand thread for the left side of the car.
1 RIM: the rim is the part of the wheel that carries the tire and consists of
the rim flange, the bead seat and the well.
2 RIM WIDTH: the rim width denotes the distance between the two rim
flanges.
3 NOMINAL RIM DIAMETER: the nominal rim diameter is a code which
indicates the diameter and is generally provided in inches.
4 STUD HOLE: the stud hole is the center of the bolt & nut.
5 DIAMETER OF BOLT HOLES OR PCD-PITCH CIRCLE DIAMETER:
the diameter of the bolt holes is the diameter of half the circle of the bolt
holes for mounting the wheels on the vehicle hub.
6 HUB CENTERING: with the hub centering it is possible to mount the
wheel centrally on the hub.
7 ET - OFFSET: the offset or inset denote the distance between the
center of the wheel rim and the mounting side of the wheel. The offset is
positive, if the mounting is displaced from the center of the wheel to the
outer side of the wheel, and it is negative if the mounting side is displaced to the inner side of the wheel.
8 HUB MOUNTING FACE: the hub mounting face is the mounting side
of the wheel.
9 CENTERLINE OF WHEEL RIM: the rim wheel’s centerline is the
center of the rim and measures half of the rim width.

Borrani Wire Wheel Identification
- Recognizable by a code number “RW” followed by a 4-digit code and the rim size
- Marked “C. BORRANI - MILANO”, “CARLO BORRANI - MILANO”, or RUOTE BORRANI - MILANO”
- On the back of the rim a progressive production number is printed with a date.

- Spokes and nipples are exclusively made in steel (not inox or stainless)
