Spangen Park, Rotterdam JSA / www.jsa-rotterdam.nl Spangen Park, Rotterdam Spangmaker Design Idea Competition The River Maas and the port activities associated with it play a major role in shaping the image of the city of Rotterdam. But there is growing awareness of the importance of an attractive city centre alongside the booming municipal economy (centred on the port). Rotterdam aspires to be an appealing place to live and work. By linking existing green spaces from the Maas to the Rotte, a large, linear park zone can be created. The area between Spangen and Kleinpolder, which is the general subject of this competition, is a crucial ‘missing link’ within this park vision for Rotterdam. The advantages of the location are its many facilities, attractions, and activities, which are already present. Its primary drawbacks stem from its coarsegrained character, with poor connections between the different facilities. If the green network is reinforced, a variety of private initiatives in the Spangen area, which are now like separate puzzle pieces, can be joined into an integrated whole. This will bring together different neighbourhoods and link up districts from the Maas to the Rotte. The potential for a Spangen Park already exists. Obstacles are being transformed into opportunities, existing attractions are being connected, and larger-scale connections are being improved. This is leading to the emergence of new locations, facilities, and potential uses, which serve as catalysts for the development of Spangen along the desired path. Spangen Park is coming into being as impediments are overcome, land is reorganized, and barriers are broken down. The differences in altitude in this area (dike bodies, a railway viaduct and Horvathweg), which now form obstructions and divide the terrain into numerous small, non-functional ‘remainder’ areas, can be used to create an intriguing city park. With limited resources, it is possible to create connections above and below, merging these remainders into an impressive and functional green space for recreation.
