“It’s just a pub.” That’s been the inspiration since 1974,
when brothers Mike and Brian McMenamin opened
their first location together in Portland, Oregon. Ever
since, the brothers have expanded this whimsical world
of fun and merriment, with neighborhood gathering
spots scattered across Oregon and Washington, always
reminding themselves to be wary of “things too formal,
too complicated and too shiny.”
Over time it became clear to us that what constitutes a
good pub is its people. The whole of the neighborhood,
young and old alike, should feel comfortable at
McMenamins, whether that spot is a fireside stool in a
rustic shed or while exploring the wonderment of small
bars in a historic school. Along the way, we also came to
appreciate the power of art, live music and history to
draw people of all backgrounds together, reinforcing a
sense of community.
In 1985, Oregon law changed to allow breweries to
sell their beer onsite – and the now-famous brewpub
revolution began. McMenamins celebrated its first
official brew at the Hillsdale Brewery & Public House
in October of the same year. After that breakthrough,
everything and anything
seemed possible…
watching a movie in a

a winery at a restored
historic poor farm,
holding a wedding
at an early pioneer
farmstead turned pub,
golfing and more.
We never know what’s
around the corner…
And throughout it all,
“it’s just a pub.”
THEATER-PUBS
Watch a film while enjoying fresh handcrafted ales, wines,
ciders, spirits and pub fare. We opened the Mission Theater,
Oregon’s first theater-pub, in 1987 and it’s been movies,
music and more ever since. Whether it be first-run films,
second-run films or the big game that week, you can find a
comfortable seat in a classic theater atmosphere. Theater
