It has been a busy two weeks with swimming carnivals and interschool sport activities dominating the calendar. Besides
these activities engaging students in healthy activity, they also provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their
talents, leadership and grit. The latter quality is important in having a growth mindset. Those students who participate and
contribute in order to ‘have a go’ are the ones who benefit most.
Some of our senior students (Interact members, Year 11 Peer Support, VET Sport and Recreation and VCAL) have been
involved in community activities such as supporting the running of the swimming carnivals, assisting in the PMP classes
in the Preparatory school, and assisting the Year 7 students in settling into school through the Peer Support Program. These
cross-age activities are important in developing community.
Thank you to the many parents who have offered to volunteer their time to assist with activities with the Parents and
Friends, Classroom Programs, Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program and Sports. Your children do like to see you
involved in activities at school.
The College is continuing to advocate for Duplication of Mickleham Road in order to alleviate traffic congestion. This is
a wider community issue and you will have an opportunity to continue your support for this advocacy on Twitter

Providence Estate
If your children use the Providence Estate gate or you drop-off/pick-up near the gate, please exercise great care as there
are several building projects underway nearby and heavy vehicles may be moving around. Children should be
encouraged to be extra careful when walking on the roads.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Thursday 17 March (concluding at 6.00pm) and Wednesday 23 March
(concluding at 8.00pm). On each of these evenings, interviews will commence at 3.30pm for parents of children in
Year Prep to Year 5 and from 4.00pm for those in Year 6 to Year 12. Research has shown that one of the factors that
helps to protect children from risky behaviour later in life is a belief that parents and teachers are working together in
the best interests of the child. One of the many ways parents can demonstrate this in a manner which is tangible to the
child, is by attending Parent Teacher Interviews. We also particularly encourage secondary students to attend these
interviews with their parents, as participating in the dialogue with adults is known to be another protective factor for
children.
Interview bookings may be made through the community portal on the Aitken College home page. Full details of how
to use the booking system will be emailed to all parents on Monday 7 March when the booking system opens. Please
note that a schedule of your interviews and room locations can be printed from the portal after you have made your
appointments.

Students Who Are Unwell: If your child becomes unwell at school, they should not immediately phone you. Students
are not permitted to use mobile phones during the school day. Students who are unwell should present to First Aid and
the attendant will, if necessary, telephone parents to collect their child.
MyAitken: It has been good to see many parents accessing the MyAitken website to explore our new learning
management platform. If you have not done so yet, go to the College website www.aitkencollege.edu.au and under the
News&Events/Publications area is a document with MyAitken access instructions.

Brookhill School Notices
Uniform and Behaviour: It has been an excellent start to the year and I have received many excellent reports from
teachers about student’s class work and attitude.
Brookhill students have also been very impressive in the area of leadership. I often speak to the senior students about their
roles as leaders within our community. All Brookhill students have a responsibility to show leadership to the younger
students in the College; the good example set by the senior students can make a positive contribution to the overall culture
of the College. Congratulations are due to the Brookhill student group for the excellent leadership they have been
demonstrating this year.
To keep up the high standards, I ask parents and students to keep the following points in mind:
 Students should be in full, correct uniform at all times. PE uniform is NEVER acceptable in regular classes; students
must come to school in correct, regular uniform.
 Spray jackets do not become part of school uniform until Term 2; they should not be seen during Term 1.
 Brookhill students must not loiter in the area around the canteen. Once they have their food, they must return straight
to the Senior School area. Also, Brookhill students must not be in the lower plaza area; this area is for Dunhelen
students.
Study Skills: Year 10 and Year 11 students have just completed their first Study Skills seminars with presenters from
Elevate Education. Research has shown effective study skills to have a significant effect on student academic achievement.
I encourage parents to talk to their children about their Study Skills Seminars. You may like to ask your children to show
you the workbook they completed during their seminar and explain the ideas to you.

VCAL News
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is part of the program for Year 11 and Year 12 VCAL students. The Award is
an internationally recognised and valued program that encourages and empowers young people to engage with their
community, explore their potential and challenge themselves to achieve personal excellence. This is achieved through
structured, independent and non-competitive voluntary activities which encourage personal discovery and growth, self reliance, perseverance, responsibility and service to the community. The Award provides opportunities for young people
to develop into mature, active citizens who will positively contribute towards society.
Currently, the Year 11 and Year 12 students are organising and preparing for a six day
camp to Angelsea, travelling by public transport. Challenging activities include surfing,
canoeing, exploration walks, beach activities, bike riding and raft building. Students will
also be organising the campsite which will include setting up the tents, packing up and
basic cooking. Last week, an Auscamp representative held an informative Camp
Information Evening.

Dunhelen School Notices
Our School, House, Performing Arts, Community Service and Environment Captains all attended a Leadership Training
afternoon at Sherwood Receptions last week. It was here that students learnt a little about leadership roles and
responsibilities and also got to spend time with the other leaders from right across the College. It was a great day for all.
All the Captains and all Class Captains were then called upon to assist in the Open Day of the College. The feedback from
visitors about their conduct and appearance was wonderful. Congratulations to all of them for their hard work on the day.
As you are aware the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre is under repair, due to water damage. This means that the Captain
Induction will now take place sometime in Term 2. However, all Captains have received their badges and the Class
Captains were introduced to the Dunhelen School at assembly on Monday.

Our first Leadrship meeting was also held last week and the focus was on developing House Spirit. The Captains came
up with some wonderful ideas; it is now a matter of trying to get some in place.
The students have settled into the school year very well. They are making huge attempts to familiarise themselves with
‘MyAitken’ and I encourage all parents to do the same. All information can be accessed here and you can check your
child’s homework, timetable, important events or things to remember.

is a short term, there is still lots to get through so do help your child maintain a regular routine at home, this off course
means, there should be time for work and time for play.

Cumberland School Notices
A big thankyou to all of the families and parents who were able to attend the Cumberland Family Picnics and Open Days
over the last two weeks. Each afternoon was really well supported and it was a great opportunity for students, teachers
and families to spend some time together in an informal and relaxed setting. From a personal perspective it was great to
meet families and share some delicious food with everyone.
Cumberland Reading Competition. Students in Years 3-5 are currently participating in a reading competition. The aim
is for each student to read at least 20 books between now and the end of Term 2. The class who reads the most books in
this time will win an extra special prize. Please support your child’s reading; this is the most important homework students
can do in primary school.
Cumberland House Cross Country Running. Congratulations to all students who participated in the Cumberland House
Cross Country running event last Thursday. It was great to see students pushing themselves to the limit over the 2.2km
and 3.4km course. It was great to see so many parents and teachers encouraging the runners on the day, it was a great day
of being outside and being healthy and fit. A big thankyou to the PE staff for running the event and to the teachers who
also ran with some of the students. The results were as follows:

Cumberland House Swimming. Tuesday 1 March saw Cumberland School participate in the House Swimming
Competition. We were blessed with beautiful warm weather and it was a great day full of fun and competition. A big
thank you to all of the teachers and PE staff for organising and running such a great day and a big thank you to all the
parents who were able to come along and support their children’s participation.

Tolerance and Patience: What does it mean to be tolerant and patient? When I observe the children and their transition
to school, so many integral factors influence their interaction. We encourage patience and tolerance to accept individual
differences. They support children to become responsible for their interaction and these characteristics are key components
of a community forming.

What I have noticed is that we are all in a hurry and that patience is not readily accessible. I understand that our patience
is directly linked to how much time we have to stop and process an event. I applaud the adults that do this so beautifully
when they collect their children from school. They take the time to question and discuss events of the day and respond
patiently when their child is a little confused. They take the time to discuss an event and guide their children through a
process of showing empathy and understanding. It is very easy to have an opinion and not so to show an understanding.
This is crucial in how children interact with each other. As adults it is our role to guide the children through this process
of personal growth, but to also develop their interpersonal skills.
Bedtime: Young children utilise and need quite a lot of energy and concentration during their school day. It is crucial that
they are provided with a healthy food diet and adequate rest and sleep. Late nights have an immediate or a delayed impact
on the children; they feel lethargic and lack concentration. The Preparatory School children require a reasonable bedtime.
Prep children should be in bed between 7.00pm and 7.30pm. Year 1 and Year 2 children should be in bed no later than
8.00pm. Adequate rest has a great impact on how children learn and relate to their learning environment.
Winter Uniform: All of the Prep and new parents should have organised their Winter uniform for next term. Winter
uniform articles will not be available for over the counter purchases and an appointment for a fitting must be made.
Summer uniform is worn Terms 1 and 4. The summer boys short sleeve shirt is only worn during Terms 1 and 4; the boys
must wear a shirt and tie during Terms 2 and 3. The winter uniform is worn during Terms 2 and 3. Please contact

Careers News
Careers: Careers staff are currently spending time with Year 12 students in their Life Skills classes. The focus is on the
Careers timeline, procedures and processes for the remainder of 2016 and the early part of 2017 and understanding some
of the useful resources available to assist with career and course exploration and decision making. Our aim is for every
Year 12 student to finish 2016 with a pathway for 2017 that they are looking forward to and are excited about.
Career News 2: This is now available via the Community Portal of MyAitken. It can be accessed by clicking on ‘School
Life’ then ‘Aitken News’ and then ‘Careers Newsletter’. The newsletter can then be downloaded from this point.
The second Career News of 2016 provides information about school holiday experiences at La Trobe University, Flight
Academy, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo, options for end of year volunteer work and experiences
abroad, Agriculture at Melbourne Polytechnic, ‘Inside Monash’ seminars, studying Business, Science or Information
Technology at Monash, Open Day at the University of Melbourne Veterinary precinct in Werribee, a new shuttle bus
service for La Trobe University from Reservoir Station, the launch of Victoria Polytechnic, the new RMIT ‘My Brochure’

Lent: Lent is traditionally a period of self-reflection in which we examine our living and try to find ways of coming closer
to God. Many people will give up an indulgence such as chocolate or coffee or they might institute a Lenten discipline
such as decluttering or volunteering some time to a local cause. These things are good things, but on their own they miss
what Lent is all about.
From Ash Wednesday until Good Friday, Christians the world over join study groups and direct their prayer life toward
an openness to change. Spending time with God and taking note of the ways of Jesus gives us the opportunity to see things
about ourselves with fresh eyes. Sometimes what we see is not pleasing and we would rather direct our gaze at our
neighbour's or partner's faults. It can take a great deal of courage to honestly take a good hard look at ourselves. It can be
even tougher to make change happen. But the good news is this - God loves us no matter what!
Lent is the season of taking risks: daring to let go of grudges, daring to ask forgiveness for our wrongs and even risking
sharing the struggles of the soul with a trusted friend. Remember to celebrate the good things - cherish your children,
honour your parents, nurture your relationships. God yearns to be in relationship with you too.

Evening With Steve Biddulph
Due to necessary works in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre, the two talks Raising Boys (21 March) and Raising
Girls (22 March) will now be held at Hume Global Learning Centre above the Craigieburn Library. Anyone who has
already purchased tickets will soon receive details of the change of venue. Tickets are still available through

Steve Biddulph AM has been a psychologist and family therapist for more than 25 years, working with young people
and their families. In 2001 he left this work to campaign full-time for a better world for parents and children. His books
including 'Secrets of Happy Children', 'Raising Boys', ‘Raising Girls’ and 'Manhood' are in over 3 million homes
worldwide. He is an Adjunct Professor of Counselling and Psychology at Cairnmiller Institute in Melbourne, and was
recently recognised as a Member of the Order of Australia in acknowledgement of significant service as an author and
educator in the fields of child and adolescent psychology.
Steve's live talks have had a remarkable public response with thousands of parents attending and tickets selling out
quickly. Together with Family Life Victoria and Aitken College, Steve is back in Melbourne to present 'An Evening
with Steve Biddulph’, for two nights only.
Parent Book Club
All Parents and Grandparents: You are invited to participate in a Parent Book Club. We meet twice a term to
enjoy some book talk and social time over a cup of tea or coffee. Our first meeting for 2016 is on Thursday 10 March
at 2.00pm in the Library. Look forward to seeing you there.

Stamps for Sammy
Get Involved and Raise Money for Charity Through Postage Stamps: ‘Stamps for Sammy’ is a Uniting Church
program which helps raise money for charity. Last year, they raised over $40,000 which was distributed to worthy
projects, both here and overseas, such as a community meal outreach program in Warrnambool and food programs for
street kids in Kenya. The program involves collecting used postage stamps (the whole envelope is best as there are
specific instructions for cutting the stamps out), which are then sold to collectors, to raise funds. This is an ongoing
project, so if you have any old envelopes at home, or can collect some in the future to help this cause, could you please
drop them into the Library. If your child is in Year Prep - 5, students may pop their envelopes into the Library tub for
collection. Thank you in anticipation.

Greenvale Community Choir - New Members Welcome
Do you love to sing? Even a little bit! The Greenvale Community Choir commenced 4 years ago at Aitken College. It
is an adult choir which requires no audition, just a love of singing and making new friends. We sing a range of Musical
theatre and popular songs. We visit nursing homes and run concerts throughout the year. Rehearsals are Wednesday at
Aitken College from 7.30pm to 9.30pm (except the first Wednesday of the month). We have a most competent director.
The Choir is open to any adult; not just from the Aitken Community. If you would like to discover a side of your life
you may have always wished to have enjoyed, why not come along. We have about 18 regular members and we would
particularly like a few more males. You may have some friends or relatives who would also enjoy this experience.

Our Herb Garden
The children participated in a nature activity which teaches
sustainability and environmental awareness.
They planted Basil and Parsley, some to take home and some for us
to care for and grow at OSHC which we will later harvest and use in
recipes. We plan to use the parsley in Bruschetta. Gardening is a
great way to teach everyone environmental awareness by observing
the process of growth in nature and it was a fun hands on experience
where the children will become responsible for the caring of the
plants. The children all took turns planting seeds into a paper cup to
take home and care for them.
