m altitude difference, with very long sections from St. Jakob via
Klammljoch (2,288 m) to Ahrntal valley in South Tyrol. It continues

After crossing the border the trail drops off into a brisk descent,
passing Lake Klammlsee, a mountain lake shaped by glaciers, and
onto Knuttenalm. Continue through the romantic Knuttental valley
via Rein towards Sand in Taufers. From here the route leads via the

The best developed section of the Drauradweg cycle path runs
between Sillian and Nikolsdorf, in East Tyrol. The inns along the
cycle path offer a range of special services for cyclists including a
large selection of cycling tours that combine culture, nature, wellness, and culinary delights – staying at an inn along the Drauradweg is therefore the ideal „base camp“ for your cycling holiday.
No. 32 - 4-hut tour (Map G7, H5, I7, H7)
The trail starts in Lienz and leads via the Drauradweg cycle path
towards Dölsacher railway station, then turn left and ride along the
old horse cart track towards the local swimming pool in Dölsach.
Continue along the municipal road towards Gödnach and Görtschach, then uphill to Anna Schutzhaus (tavern), the first stop
on the tour (overnight stay). Descend via the saddle between the
mountains towards Stronach and Iselsberg. Then continue back
uphill for about 300 m along the federal highway, before crossing
the highway at the old Iselsbergstraße exit. From here turn into
Debanttal valley. Follow this section of the trail to Lienzer Hütte
tavern, the second stop on the tour. On the third day of the tour
set out from Lienzer Hütte towards the end of the valley. Shortly
before Nußdorfer Bridge head uphill to Faschingalm and then onto
Zettersfeld village centre. Follow the trail downhill via Thurnerstraße
towards Lienz. The path will eventually lead back uphill to your goal
for the third day, Hochsteinhütte tavern. You will spend the night
lower down on the mountain in Sternalm (500 altitude difference).
The fourth day begins with a picturesque descent via Hochsteinstraße into the valley and along the Drauradweg cycle path. Follow
the trail towards Amlach and then turn off towards Tristach. On
arriving at Tristach sports centre leave the main road and follow
the toboggan track uphill until Kreithof, then continue along the toll
road to Dolomitenhütte tavern, the last stop on the tour. Return via
the same route downhill to the sports centre, then cross the main
road and continue along the Drauradweg cylce path, which takes
you back to Lienz.

Unforgettable cycling adventures along the Drau, Isel and in the East Tyrolean Alps

run
Cycling adventures between Glockner Mountain and
the Dolomites.
It’s easy to assume that cycling was invented in East Tyrol:
nowhere else can you find such a diverse range of terrain in
such a small area as in this region of the Alps. Therefore it’s no
surprise that many of Europe’s major cycling events are held in
East Tyrol: the Giro d‘Italia includes a stage that runs through
the region’s picturesque mountains and the most challenging
part of the Tour of Austria (Internationale Österreich Radrundfahrt) runs through the village of Prägraten – famous for mountaineering – in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

This tour requires a little training beforehand. After the climb via
Matrei Felbertauern Tunnel (shuttle service through the tunnel) the
trail runs a winding descent towards Mitersill. Continue to Zell am
See and then Bruck, where the ascent to Hochtor begins, which
demanded the best of all your skills. The descent to Heiligenblut
and the plesant route through the Mölltal valley offer you a chance
to recover before the last climb up to the Iselsberg begins. The
splendid panoramic views make up for all the hard effort.

This competition in the Lienz Dolomites is considered by many
as one of the toughest adventure races on offer today. A team
consisting of a mountain runner, a paraglider, a canoeist and a
mountain biker compete as a relay team against steep mountains, unpredictable winds, alpine whitewater and breakneck
downhill routes. The race is set against the backdrop of the
majestic Dolomites with challenges presented by the whitewater
of major rivers and the notorious H2000-World Cup ski piste.

This trail starts at the „Einfangbrücke“ bridge just before the
centre of St. Jakob village. The family-friendly cycle path takes
you on a gravelled track along the banks of River Schwarzach
past the festival and recreational area known as „Sander Ebene,“ then Bad Grünmoos to Maria Hilf (flat section). From here a
steady climb along and asphalt path to „Pötsch“, where the route

Put your calves to the test in the East Tyrolean Alps! Mountain
Biking in East Tyrol is a special adventure. The region has over
1,000 km of signposted trails for all level of difficulty with breathtaking alpine scenery, healthy mountain air and sunny weather
typical for the south side of the Alps between Großglockner
Mountain and the Dolomites. A tour that has become known for
its “flavour” starts from St. Jakob im Defereggental, the highest
holiday and wellness resort in Austria. If you are in good physical
condition why not test your skills on the challenging uphill trail
that leads to Klammljoch (2,288 m)? The trail then continues
downhill into South Tyrol, via Kematen until you arrive at Toblach.

Even the Dolomitenradrundfahrt, the most popular cycling race
open to tourists in Austria, takes place in East Tyrol. But the region also offers a large selection of cycling trails for families. The
first stage of the Drauradweg cycle path, from Toblach to Lienz
(via Sillian), starts flat and gently descends downhill, allowing
parents and children to coast alongside the wild River Drau.
There are several inns along the cycle path where you can stop
for refreshment and rest. You can even incorporate an exciting
excursion, such as a visit to Galitzenklamm gorge, Lienz Old
Town or Bruck Castle, into your family tour.

No. 4 - Staller circuit trail
The tour leads through the Alps along roads with little traffic, in
a province considered greenest region in Europe. The first climb
leads to Gailberg, then descends to Kötschach-Mauthen. Once
in the Lesachtal valley, the trail rises steadily, reaching its highest
point at Kartitschersattel. From here it is now only downhill, first to
Tassenbach and then along the River Drau to Lienz.
The trail runs first along the Iseltalradweg cycle path to Huben and
then through the Defereggental valley until Staller Sattel, the highest point on the tour. From here the descent begins via the South
Tyrolean Antholzertal valley towards Niederrasen and Olang. Continue along the trail through the Pustertal valley towards Toblach
then further onto Innichen, and along Drauradweg back to Lienz.
Start/Finish: Lienz | Start altitude: 670 m | Highest point: Kartitscher
