Our
Cause:
STRONGER DELAWARE & BLACKFORD COUNTIES
We believe our communities can be so much more.
Throughout Blackford and Delaware Counties, countless people know the YMCA of
Muncie. But there’s so much more to our Y than one might think.
From exercise to education, from volleyball to volunteerism, from preschool to preventive health, the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies. It strengthens our community.
The Y is so much more than a gym. It’s a cause, dedicated to youth development,
healthy living and social responsibility.
For 138 years, we’ve been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive. Yet
we’re called to do so much more.
Our communities face new challenges that create a greater need than ever for the
work we do every day. Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities
for our members, volunteers and staff to make a difference. And together, we can
achieve so much more.

Youth
Development
:
Third-grader Richie is the oldest of three children who are being raised by a single mom. Last
year, when he first arrived at Apple Tree YMCA,
he exhibited severe anger issues, which he
couldn’t properly express. His words and actions
when angry were violent, including throwing toys
and other objects at teachers and other children.
He had to be sent home several times in his first
few weeks.
One afternoon, while waiting for his
grandmother to pick him up, Richie noticed
some nature books in Executive Director Diana
Badger’s office. As he looked through a book,
he began to calm down and become extremely
interested in the content. He was full of
questions and insights about the pictures.
ES
“This conversation led to us sharing with
Richie’s grandmother about the Early Learning Forest,” said Sarah Quinn, Program Director
of School Aged Child Care. “We suggested that
perhaps a daily one-on-one walk and play time in
the Early Learning Forest would help him.”

young people form healthy habits, develop their

Now, when Richie’s bus arrives, he goes to the
logs to play and talk about his day for 10-15
minutes. This one-on-one attention allows him
to express himself and allows the Apple Tree
YMCA staff to show him they care for him, will
never give up on him, and want him to succeed.
Richie rarely has emotional outbursts and he
doesn’t get sent home anymore.
Apple Tree YMCA has integrated researchproven, nature based learning into its
curriculum. The Early Learning Forest was
developed in 2013 with a generous grant
from the Ball Brothers Foundation.
Together we will prepare more youth and teens for a brighter future!

Healthy
Living
S
Re
Health and well-being are all about balance. That’s why we help people and families build and
maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives. By helping kids, adults,
families and seniors from all backgrounds improve their health and well-being, we build stronger
Blackford and Delaware Counties.

Emma Osborn joined the Y in 2012 with a goal to lose
weight and improve her overall fitness. She started doing
cardio on her own, but soon realized she needed some help.
That’s when she purchased 10 personal training sessions as
a birthday gift to herself, thinking that was all she needed.
Two years later and almost 100 pounds slimmer, Emma has
discovered how strong she really is and how the Y community is here to help her along her journey to be healthy and
happy. She has also created a domino effect – getting her
friends and family involved with the Y and encouraging their
healthy living choices. Emma is a great example of how hard
work and dedication can make a difference not only for one’s
self, but also for others.
“With the support of the Y community I have discovered just
how strong I can be. So, thank you, all. For noticing me, for
encouraging me, for believing in me, accepting me, and for allowing me to join and participate at a rate that I can
afford. Most of all, thank you for helping me discover my own strengths.”
The YMCA’s financial assistance program subsidizes memberships and programs so that the Y
continues to be accessible for ALL in the communities we serve.

Together we will work to reduce chronic disease and obesity!

Social
Responsibility
With our doors open to all, we work every day to connect people from all backgrounds across
the communities we serve and support to those who need us most. We take on the most urgent
needs in our community and inspire a spirit of service in return. Our members, volunteers,
supporters and staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together.
Pre-teen Taylor Cook couldn’t look Blackford County YMCA
Executive Director Dave Bustos in the eye when they first
met. Taylor was failing school, had been physically violent
with his mother, and was on strict probation through the
Blackford County Probationary Department.
As the first Probationary Department / YMCA Martial Arts
partnership student, and one who was regularly bullied in
school, Taylor was reluctant to participate in class. But he
grew into what Taylor calls his “Y family and second home.”
Just three years later, Taylor stood proudly wearing his gee
and green belt, along with a large first place trophy.
Fast-forward to present – at age 17 he is working toward
the Dean’s List at school, has attended a national voice
competition twice, belongs to the National Choir Society (by
invitation only!), and received a high score on the ASVAB
military entrance exam. He is joining the US Navy with his choice of station assignment.
“This program really helped Taylor,” said Taylor’s mother Tina McCoin. “They took him in and taught him how to
conquer his anger and showed him that they believed in him. He went from straight Fs almost to the Dean’s List
and is no longer bullied. The program really encouraged him to reach out, step up and be a voice.”
The Blackford County YMCA and the Blackford County Probation Department’s collective impact has
been teaching at-risk youth life skills such as discipline, self-respect, and stick-to-itiveness since 2008!
