A CLOSER LOOK
Lattof YMCA member Oscar knows better than most that whatever
stage of life a member is in, the YMCA can support and align with
their interests. Oscar first came to the Y as a rambunctious teen. One
especially trying afternoon, Lattof YMCA program specialist Don Quinlan
gave Oscar a handball and told him to start throwing it around the
courts. Don thought Oscar might lose interest quickly, but the boy spent
several hours on the court that day: his passion for the game had been
sparked. Don enrolled Oscar in his handball program, where the boy
felt engaged with and challenged by the game. He soon began playing
in tournaments and won several trophies along the way, including first
place for the USHA 15-and-under Nationals and second place for the
Junior Nationals.
Oscar’s relationship with the Lattof Y continues to this day. Even as a
busy father of two, he’s still considered a regular around the Lattof Y
handball courts, and recently served as a referee when Lattof hosted a
national junior handball tournament. Oscar was eager to share with the
young players his lifelong love of handball, first instilled in him by the
Lattof YMCA.

living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the
potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and
well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development,
healthy living and social responsibility, the Lattof YMCA has
been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive
for 52 years. Between the whistles of a youth basketball league, the splash of a
swim lesson and the smile that says “you’re welcome,” the Lattof
YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some
see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers,
program participants and staff to make a difference.
Since 1961, the Lattof YMCA has served the community of Des
Plaines. Today for more than 7,356 members, 128 volunteers and
10,646 program participants, the Lattof YMCA is a destination
where local children and families have the opportunity to discover
who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all
ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy habits.
