Our mission is to help you gain knowledge and connections to make the most of your talent. We hope
you enjoy the day, and leave energized with renewed motivation and creativity.
Please note on our schedule that we offer both Professional Track and Novice Track seminars.
You are welcome to attend any sessions that interest you! Please be aware, however, that our
Professional Track sessions are intended for actors who make a living (or a portion of their living) as
an actor. Our Novice Track seminars are for those who may have acting experience and training, but
have limited experience in that session’s subject matter.

Welcome to the Biz and the Expo!
This session will outline the many acting opportunities in the Twin Cities, giving you a big-picture look
at how the business functions. You’ll leave with a better understanding of how you can best pursue
acting work, whether it’s a hobby or a career aspiration. Plus, we’ll share an overview of the Twin
Cities Actor Expo and how to make the most of your day.

Kids Improvisation
Free your mind! Have fun with a group of actors! We’ll work as a group through several improvbased exercises to build learning on-the-fly skills and techniques. Network with your peers and build
connections to provide opportunities for future roles. Develop your skills as an individual and take
what you’ve learned to apply it both on and off the stage. Come to learn how to be more flexible in
film and theatre. Bring your creativity and enjoy the funny results! This session is geared towards kids

Don’t Forget to Breathe
A workshop for the actor who needs some tweaks on vocal techniques.
Michelle Barber, private vocal coach and Director of the on-going Musical Theatre Program at
Chanhassen Dinner Theatres for the past 22 years, leads an energetic, fun, comprehensive one-hour
workshop on vocal technique. Whether you are a musical theatre actor or classical actor, there is
always more to learn regarding how to speak, sing and have your voice be heard in a theatre of any
size. Michelle uses hands-on methods with participants during her popular workshop and you will
come away with a better understanding of how your vocal instrument can be used to its full potential.

How do I find an agent? What are agents looking for? Can I have more than one agent? How often

looking for an agent or trying to increase your marketability, here’s your opportunity to ask a panel of
Twin Cities agents questions about navigating the talent business.

The Dos and Don’ts of Self Submission Online
Video auditions are becoming more and more common. They allow you to submit for roles where you
are unable to attend the casting call. In this class you’ll learn about how to effectively create video
submissions and things you may not even realize you’ve been doing wrong when submitting them.
We’ll go over technical considerations as well as how to best prepare yourself and your performance
for video submission.

Planning your Acting Career
As an award-winning Chicago casting director, actor, master teacher, producer, agent and stage
director — Jane Drake Brody knows all aspects of the business. Her book, The Actor’s Business
Plan, A Career Guide for the Acting Life, is quickly becoming known as the actor’s bible for planning
a successful acting career. Having worked in every genre, she offers unique insights into how the
business works for actors.
The biggest complaint of students graduating with a theatre major, a BFA, or an MFA is that they
weren’t prepared for the overwhelming world of “the Biz.” Jane will offer in depth information about the
mechanics of the business, from theatre to film to television. For Twin Cities actors, this is a fabulous
opportunity to seek advice for acting work beyond the Twin Cities market.

Renowned casting director and master acting teacher, Jane Drake Brody, has been presenting
workshops across the world in both acting and the business of acting for many years. Her book, The
Actor’s Business Plan: A Career Guide to the Acting Life published by Bloomsbury Press is hailed by
many as the bible for actors whose careers are beginning, as well as for those who are feeling stuck.
It addresses not only career planning but also the life issues that can interfere with a life in the “biz.”
Jane‘s new book (to be released by Routledge Press this summer) is entitled, Acting, Archetype, and
Neuroscience: Superscenes through Stanislavsky. It examines ways in which actors and directors
can best utilize recent scientific discoveries that reinforce the theory of psychophysical action that was
a result of Stanislavsky’s lifelong work. Superscenes are a means to discover primal and archetypal

On-Camera Audition Tips and Tricks
Join professional actor and acting coach, Michelle Hutchison, as she shares the many techniques and
skills necessary to have a successful on-camera audition. Participants will learn how to take a script
and quickly make it their own, improve cold reading skills, adaptability and improvisation, and know
how to confidently walk into the casting room in order to book the job.

Industry Professionals Discuss Training in the Twin Cities
Do actors need to train? If so, what should they study? Why? Should they go to a BFA or MFA

training. Whether you are interested in film, television, commercials or theater, this panel will discuss
the things all actors should be doing.

Auditioning for Voice-over: Stand Out From the Crowd!
Voice-over competition is now tougher than ever! It’s no longer enough to have a great demo and
agency representation. To be truly competitive, you need to deliver killer reads for every audition.
In this 60 minute interactive session, we’ll discuss and demonstrate: how to approach copy
interpretation, how to deliver more truthful, “non-announcer” reads, and how to apply your acting skills
to voice-over work.

members of Actor’s Equity, these talented professionals have worked at every major theatre in the

Theatre Latte Da), as well as appearing on Broadway and in numerous National Tours. In this
interactive workshop you will hear from the pros how to make the most of your 5 minutes. Come

Making Your Cold-Reading HOT: It’s Not About the Words
At your last audition, did you feel lost, ill-prepared and as if you were floundering? How do you define
a successful cold-read? (Besides landing the role!) What exactly does “make a strong choice” mean?
This brief workshop offers actors some tools and tips to turn any cold reading into an awesome,
focused audition. Actors attending the workshop may volunteer to demonstrate techniques.

Improv for Flexibility: Wrong and Strong
Join Brave New Workshop Artistic Director Caleb McEwen for an improvisation workshop aimed
directly at actors. Ever had a director ask you to be “bigger,” “more subtle,” or “squishier?” This
workshop will use the basic principles of improvisation to help increase your flexibility and give you
the confidence to jump in and “squish” with the best of them. With a focus on making immediate, bold
choices without allowing your judgey inner critic to pipe up and ruin everything, this workshop is a
must for stage and screen actors alike.

Actors Are From Mars and Directors Are From Venus – Did
that Drowning Work for You?!
Rachel and Barry recently shot a feature film located in a house where the basement was completely
flooded. They’ll talk about communication between the actor and director under normal circumstances
vs. in an environment where you are practically drowning. Communication is key to not only happy
actors and directors, but also key to making sure the actor’s performance matches the director’s
vision of the story.
Actors go from job to job, learning to interpret what different directors are saying. Directors work with
a variety of actors, learning over time how to best communicate with talent. Often communication is a
struggle. In this workshop with a working actress and working director, we’ll cover what it’s like from
either side of the camera: what frustrates actors the most, what drives directors crazy, and why both
sides often wonder why communication is misunderstood!

Location: Classroom
Here’s your chance to show your stuff in front of a selection of local film directors! Actors will perform
short scenes/monologues for the group. Actors will be scheduled in 5 minute slots throughout the day
in the CLASSROOM. There will be a check-in table just outside the door.
Each audition includes a 1-2 minute comedic, or dramatic monologue or two person scene. There
will be no cold reads. If you can’t find a scene partner to work with please bring two copies of your
script and we’ll have an actor on hand to read with you. Actors may be asked questions during their
audition.

These brief “meet and greet” sessions are not designed to be interviews for representation. This is
your opportunity to meet representatives from the agencies, and submit your headshot / resume.
Please bring enough headshots and resumes to share with each agency. The agents will review your

group hands-on, practical educational sessions that include a mock audition.

sessions will include up to 12 people.

Barry Andersson
Barry Andersson is an award-winning director and cinematographer. His career started with live
television video production and now includes a pair of feature films, several acclaimed short films,
television pilots and numerous commercials. Mr Andersson uses his real-world experiences working
for clients such as ESPN, Skype and Discovery Channel to help instruct seminars globally about best
practices for film makers. His list of speaking appearances include NAB, the Idea Conference, and
Creative Suite Conference, among others, and he’s consulted groups such as the U.S. Marine Corp,
NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and prestigious U.S. universities. Mr Andersson is the author of the “DSLR
Filmmakers Handbook.”
Michelle Barber
Michelle Barber, well-known actress based here in the Twin Cities has been working as a proud union
member for the past 40 years. She has performed at Guthrie Theatre (Caroline or Change, Other
Desert Cities, Roman Holiday, Pen) Theater Latte Da (Spring Awakening, Gypsy), Ten Thousand
Things (King Henry IV), Southern Theatre (Juliet Letters) and Playwright’s Center (various readings).
But her real home is at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, where she has performed such classic roles as
Dolly Levi, Grisabella, Reno Sweeney, and Adelaide.

Kathy Byrne
Kathy Byrne has been the Director of TV/Theatrical for SAG-AFTRA Chicago since May, 2010. In
addition to running the TV/Theatrical Department, she also is the head of Agency Relations for the
Chicago local. This entails working with Franchised Agents in the Chicago market. Kathy is a firm
believer in outreach to both actors and filmmakers who are beginning their careers, or who have
worked on several film projects without realizing how easy it is to work with SAG-AFTRA actors
and contracts. Prior to her position at SAG-AFTRA, Kathy was the Project Coordinator for Film and
Television for the Chicago Film Office for nearly 20 years. In that position she worked with such
projects as The Dark Knight, The Fugitive, ER, Wanted, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Public Enemies
and Stranger than Fiction. She also was the Program Coordinator for the Chicago Outdoor Film
Festival for 3 years.
Beth Chaplin
Beth has been a full-time actor in the Twin Cities for over 20 years. Her extensive voice-over and
on-camera portfolio includes hundreds of radio and TV commercials, and over a thousand industrial
and corporate training programs. Beth has coached dozens of local actors in the business of acting,
acting for the camera and voice-over. Past stage credits include Park Square, Theater in the Round
and Theatre Unbound. Her book, The Acting Biz: A Career Guide to the Twin Cities is a valuable

Matt Cici
Matt Cici is a filmmaker and actor with a passion to help the Minnesota film community grow. He has
nearly a decade of background in theater and film acting, leading to state competitions, awards and
scholarships. His first feature, Lambent Fuse, came directly after making a few award-winning short
films. The goal of Lambent Fuse is to shift the paradigm of the stereotypical mental conditions shown
in mainstream cinema by portraying the reality of mental illness and human choices in an eye-opening
and innovative manner. He has also started a production company called Stolen Arrow Films, and he
recently starred in The Center, a feature film produced by Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme
(The Silence of the Lambs), directed by Charlie Griak.
Paul Coate
Nancy Cossette
Nancy’s son, Luke would memorize lines from TV and act them out, and in everyday life he is full of
drama and expression. Therefore, mom had him try acting at JRP in Minnesota. (“Good thing dad was
deer hunting and had no idea what we were up to!”) Luke then went to the IPOPS acting convention

in Las Vegas. Mom and dad thought, “we’ll do this, then be done with this acting thing.” They didn’t
know this was only the beginning! Luke had many managers and agents interested in signing him,
so off to LA they went, meeting with about 20 agents and managers in one week. They spent two
winters in LA, constantly busy with auditions and bookings. It was the experience of a lifetime. In
Minneapolis, Luke has done lots of varied work and has learned life skills from all this experience.
Shelly DeMarre
Shelly DeMarre is the mother of actor, Jimmy Deshler and has been working in some aspect of the
entertainment industry for over six years. In 2009, Shelly and Jimmy made the move to Los Angeles
and found that many people arrive with high hopes, but get frustrated because they have no real
direction. Through personal experience and a lot of research, Shelly started the company, Your
L.A. Connection, to introduce, guide and help those coming to the Los Angeles area to explore the
entertainment industry. Your L.A. Connection has been helping launch actors’ careers since 2013.
Shelly is passionate about seeing eager and talented actors’ dreams come true!
Jimmy Deshler
Jimmy Deshler moved from Minnesota in 2009 to pursue acting and has since appeared on shows
such as ABC’s General Hospital, Astronaut Wives Club, NCIS, Nickelodeon’s Nicky Ricky Dicky &
Dawn, and will be starring in a new film in 2016 called “Riding Faith”.

Jane Drake Brody
Award-winning casting director, actor, teacher, producer, agent, and stage director, Jane Drake Brody
is a nationally recognized expert in how to create a sustainable, happy, and rewarding career in the
acting business. Recipient of the Casting Society of America award for Best Location Casting for
the acclaimed Coen brothers film Fargo, Jane is also a Los Angeles Weekly’s Best Actress award
winner and has performed on some of America’s most prestigious stages, from the Guthrie Theatre
in Minneapolis and Drury Lane in Chicago, to Los Angeles Actors’ Theatre. In a field where depth
and range of experience is critical, Jane’s background is outstanding for its richness. Formerly an
assistant to Michael Shurtleff, author of Audition!, Jane is retired from The Theatre School at DePaul
University, and was formerly head of Undergraduate Acting at LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jane
draws on more than 45 years of professional insights and proven strategies.
Heidi Fellner
A top-earning voice-over talent at NUTS, ltd, Heidi is also a longtime actor featured in national spots
for Great Clips, Airborne, Radisson, Hotels.com, ING, Time Warner Cable and many others.
She has also appeared in movies such as The Invitation (2014), Fall Into Me (2006) and Lambent
Fuse (2011).
Elena Giannetti
Elena has been a part of the Twin Cities acting community for over 30 years, performing on many
local stages, including The Guthrie Theater, Park Square Theater, Children’s Theater Company,
History Theater, Mixed Blood, MN Jewish Theater Company, Playwright’s Center, Off-Leash Area,
MN Shakespeare Project, BCT/Artistry, Theater in the Round, and many more. Her on-camera/
film credits include multiple industry films and commercials, as well as recent roles in the films Twin
Cities, Recalibrate, and Bringing It All Back Home, along with the web series Theater People/Season
3. Elena is also a director and producer, with recent credits including the Encore Audience Favorite
(“A Certain Age”) at the 2013 MN Fringe Festival as well as assistant directing multiple productions at
Park Square Theater and TRP. She is a graduate of Macalester College with a BA in Dramatic Arts
and has studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (NY) and with MK Lewis in Los Angeles.
Elena is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA and currently serves on the local SAG-AFTRA Board of
Directors as Third VP. Elena studies with Raye Birk at the Actors Workout/The Guthrie Theater.
Elena will be directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Park Square Theater in the fall of 2016.
Greta Grosch
A professional actress, writer, director and producer, Greta’s work has been seen on stages around
the country. Greta also works regularly as a voice-over and commercial artist, travels the country as
a motivational speaker and corporate entertainer, and is a member of Actor’s Equity, the Dramatists
Guild and the Playwright’s Center.
Michelle Hutchison
Michelle Hutchison is a professional actor of stage, screen and television. She has appeared on
numerous local stages including the Guthrie, History Theater, Theater Latte Da, Mixed Blood, Actor’s
Theater of Minnesota, Brave New Workshop, Thirst Theater, ComedySportz, Playwright’s Center

Caleb McEwen
Caleb McEwen is a writer, keynote speaker, trainer, master of ceremonies, knife thrower, juggler
and dancer. Yes, we did say knife thrower. Caleb is also one of the most experienced improvisation
performers in the country. Since joining the Brave New Workshop, Caleb has written, directed,
produced, and performed in more events than any other Brave New Workshop performer. In addition
to the US, Caleb has performed in Japan, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Malta, Canada, The Bahamas and
out on the open sea with Disney Cruise Lines. He has been on stage with presidents, senators and
former heads of the CIA and emceed events with everyone from LL Cool J to Randy Travis. When
he’s not working for the Brave New Workshop, Caleb McEwen teams up with the Danger Committee,

Tinia Moulder
Tinia Moulder is an actor, singer and dancer with extensive theater credits. Her work in the Twin
Cities includes: The Guthrie, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Ordway Center, Minnesota Opera, Old
Log, Mixed Blood, Illusion and History Theaters, to name a few. She most recently was seen as Mrs
Squires in The Music Man at the Guthrie Theater and as choreographer for the hit show, Glensheen,
at the History Theatre. When not on stage, she loves working with students teaching acting, directing
and choreographing.
Rich Remedios
Rich Remedios is a Minneapolis based actor and teacher. As an actor he has performed on
Broadway and in numerous regional theaters; on film and television as well as numerous commercials
and industrial videos. He holds an MFA in Acting from the University of South Carolina and is a
certified Meisner Teacher. He also completed the 2-year Meisner training program at the William
Esper Studio, studied at The Shakespeare Lab at The Public Theatre and completed internships with
Circle Repertory Theatre and Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Rich currently studies with Raye Birk
at The Guthrie Theater. As a teacher, Rich has served on the theatre faculty of University of South
Carolina, Kennesaw State University and Clayton State University. He currently teaches privately in
his own studio, Twin Cities Meisner Training, has been a guest teacher at the Guthrie Theatre and
Macalester College, and is a teaching artist with Mu Performing Arts.
Deborah Rosenberg Charloff
Deborah Rosenberg Charloff is the co-owner of Caryn Model & Talent Management. Deb started
her career as a young model at the age of five doing runway shows and modeling for Dayton’s. She
assisted her mother, Caryn Rosenberg, with the production of fashion shows for Market Fashion
Productions. She’s a graduate from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in

the Audience Award at the Twin Cities Film Fest. He is currently wrapping up post production on Twin
Cities, a feature length drama he produced, and Beyond The Thrill, a documentary he directed about
competitive skydiving.
Barbara “Babs” Shelton
Barbara “Babs” Shelton is a renowned casting director in the Twin Cities. Since 1989, Directors and

Cynthia Uhrich
Cynthia Uhrich is the owner and instructor of IN THE MOMENT Studio in St. Paul, where she has
been teaching and inspiring actors since 2003. She has been a guest teacher at St. Cloud University,
Minneapolis Media Institute, and for the past two years taught a semester-long course for MCTC’s
Cinema Department titled “Ready for Your Close-Up? A Screen Acting Lab for Directors & Actors”.
She has also been casting MCTC’s short student film projects for 3 years. She is a working actress
and filmmaker; in 2012 she created the non-profit IN THE MOMENT FILMS with the mission of
employing more women in the field. At present, she is wrapping up post-production on “Robert in the
Bedroom” a short film on the topic of Alzheimer’s and shot by Gregory Winter. Uhrich wrote, produced
and directed the project. She also has a significant role in “The 4th” which shot over the summer. IN
THE MOMENT FILMS is in the early planning stages for its next film project; with anticipated shooting
in the Fall/Winter of 2016.
Shirley Venard
Shirley Venard is a Twin Cities Actor, Adjunct Professor and Business Owner. She has had a rich
and successful career on stage, film and radio. She was a company member of the Guthrie Theatre
under Garland Wright’s direction. Also, performing at Chanhassen, Illusion, Mixed Blood and other

regional theatres, she has played many of Dramatic Literature’s “great women”. Venard is now an
affiliate Professor at the University of Minnesota, teaching courses for actors, Career Preparation

Rachel Weber
When she was a child, Rachel thought it would be much more practical to be a director instead of
an actor, because then she “could boss people around”. After all, it worked with her five siblings and
the neighborhood kids... Instead, the past thirteen years have been spent telling stories on stage
and film, receiving an A.F.A. in Theatre Performance, and, yes, directing. Most recently, Rachel has
added the titles of writer and producer to her resume, and started the transition to LA. Locally, Rachel
has performed at The Children’s Theatre Company, The Guthrie, Park Square Theatre, Theatre in the
Round, Bloomington Civic Theatre, and Yellow Tree Theatre, among others.

fall. Since the conclusion of the internship, he has remained on staff to assist the Catering and
Hospitality Department. Greg also has past Event Planning and/or Marketing internship experiences
with the Irish Fair of Minnesota and KMSP Fox9. He received a Bachelors degree in Marketing
Communications from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls in 2011, where he studied in Europe
twice and hosted his own radio show.
Briana Lee
Stage Manager, Battle of the Improv All-Stars
Briana Rose Lee is a freelance artist in the cities. She enjoys work both in theater and film, in
production and performance. She recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA
in Theatre Arts and a minor in Communications. Her latest stage management credits include
Sasquatched the Musical with Imagined Theatre and Imaginary Invalid at Theatre in the Round. She
is currently keeping busy in pre-production on several projects and working as a product specialist in
auto shows around the country for Mazda.

As part of the creative and performing arts community locally within the Twin Cities, Jatin has seen
first-hand how passionate and devoted the visual arts community is about their craft. With the Twin
Cities Film Fest, Jatin seeks to bring the community together in celebration of film arts the community
deserves. Jatin was recently recognized by two different top industry publications, 2014 Real Power 50
by MN Business Magazine and 2014 40 Under 40 by MPLS Business Journal for his entrepreneurship
and professionalism. He also sits on the board for the Twin Cities Actor Expo and has been involved
with MN IFP, MN Film and TV Board and educational organizations to progress filmmaking in our
community. His passion for supporting the arts has been highlighted by the Twin Cities Film Fest. www.

Dallas Smith
Lead Photographer
Dallas became involved in the Twin Cities film community 4 years ago when she was first asked to
be a part of a 24 Hour Film Race team. She has always had a passion for photography, storytelling,
and film. But it wasn’t until that 24 hours that she fell in love with the process of filmmaking.She has
been involved locally with Z-Fest, The 48 Hr Film Project, MNWIFT, Mpls Photo Center, Screenwriter’s
Workshop, and IFP MN. She is as happy and comfortable in front of the camera as she is behind it.

She does freelance acting/commercial/print work, is represented by All Models Talent Agency, is a
part of the Phoenix Memories Photography Team, works with Winterland Recording Studios to shoot
and design marketing materials for musicians, and has had her cityscape photography displayed
in various locations throughout the Twin Cities. Dallas is excited by the growth she sees happening
within the Twin Cities creative community and feels fortunate to be involved with such a talented,
passionate, and dedicated group of people!
Gabe Steinberg
(Actor/Writer/Producer)
Gabe graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Theatre and Psychology. He
has been acting professionally, on-camera, in the Twin Cities for over 8 years. In 2010 he began
writing and producing commercials and industrial videos with his production company Flip Script
Films. He has produced video content for Jim Beam, 2 Gingers, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Verizon,
St. Thomas University, and Best Buy. In his free time, Gabe is very active in the community. He just
recently completed his first narrative feature film in collaboration with a non-profit that works with
young adults with developmental disabilities. The movie is called UNDERLAND III – Beyond the Rift.

Jodi VanDeRiet

Jodi is a graduate from University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She attended University of North
Carolina-Wilmington for a semester, in which she landed a summer internship at a Wilmington based
casting company. Since graduating with a degree in business, Jodi has been involved in many
aspects of the film industry gaining valuable experience. Jodi now has a video production company
of her own. Jodi loves spending her time riding and competing in barrel races with two of her horses,
and focusing on continuing to grow her video production company!
