Electrolytes E By Paula Broadhurst lectrolytes are minerals that are essential for maintaining the correct fluid balances within the body. The major electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium and these are contained to varying levels in most horse feeds and forages. Horses, like all animals, continually lose electrolytes through their droppings, urine, breath and by sweating; these losses therefore need to be continually replaced. Horses performing hard work and sweating a lot (such as competition horses) will obviously loose more than a pleasure hack performing only light work. In addition, weather conditions such as how hot, humid or windy it is will affect how quickly electrolytes are lost. The body monitors its fluid levels and when fluid is lost through sweating, this affects the concentration of electrolytes and triggers a thirst response to stimulate drinking. This however only replaces the fluid and not the electrolytes which need to be replaced by daily consumption. Electrolytes are not stored for long durations in the body therefore a horse at a competition for several days and not able to graze and eat his normal feed intake may become electrolyte deficient even though his sweat level may only be low. Most horses that are in light work and are being fed a commercial 04 ❘ NagMag June 2015 balanced diet in addition to access to good quality forage are receiving enough electrolytes. However, horses in moderate work can lose 5 litres of fluid per hour in sweat and horses in hard work can lose 10 to 15 litres per hour, therefore electrolyte supplementation should be considered. It is also worth considering other candidates such as the pony with Cushings disease with a long coat on a hot day and horses travelling in hot weather and sweating a lot in the horse box. Signs of mild to moderate electrolyte deficiency or imbalances include dehydration, fractious behaviour, fatigue, poor concentration, poor coordination, muscle cramping, ‘tying up’ and colic. Severe electrolyte disturbances can cause disorientation, collapse, heart arrhythmias, seizures and death. How best to supplement your horse is a subject of great debate and varied opinions; and the old adage ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’ comes into play. Simply providing a salt lick often doesn’t work as some horses will lick it obsessively until completed and others will not touch them. Adding electrolytes to water will encourage some horses to drink more and others to drink less if they don’t like the taste. Even adding electrolytes to feed can be difficult as many horses will not tolerate this. There are many different commercial products that have their own instructions on quantities to be fed and, like adding any product to your horse diet, these should be introduced gradually. If using electrolytes in water, there should always be a source of plain water available as well. Supplements work best if given as a ‘constant’ supplement. Suddenly giving your horse an ‘excessive’ dose will do nothing more than to stimulate the kidneys into overdrive to excrete the additive. Syringe electrolytes can help to stimulate a horse to drink following a competition however, if the horse does not drink following a bolus of an electrolyte paste it can (potentially) increase dehydration levels. Whilst adding table salt to the horses’ diet can help with the provision of some minerals such as sodium, chloride and potassium it must also be remembered that many other important minerals are not present. Maintaining the correct balance of electrolytes is just as important as the electrolytes themselves. Unfortunately, there is no magic formula to determine each horses electrolyte requirements; there are so many influencing factors. It can be assumed that most horses in moderate to hard work will require some form of electrolyte supplement. Signs of over supplementing electrolytes are drinking and urinating excessively. If you are concerned that horse may be suffering from an electrolyte deficiency or imbalance you should discuss this with your own vet to determine if some form of supplement would be suitable. It’s time to spread the word F WORDS : Rebecca Kingsley IMAGES : © Equi Expo ollowing the huge success of our Paralympic riders at the 2012 London Olympics many have been inspired to join the equine world and open their eyes to life in the saddle. Like many new experiences horse riding has its ups and downs, but the unique sense of achievement and formation of an incredible bond makes it all worthwhile – especially for those who are experiencing life’s tough challenges. The RDA has 500 organisations distributed across England. The South East alone provides equestrian activites, events and exciting challenges to approximately 2000 riders with varying disabilities. With more than 1000 volunteers, who happily spare their free time, the RDA are able to run numerous activites including carriage driving, horse riding, competitions and dressage, as well as teaching important life skills. The RDA is passionate about carrying out life-changing activities and encouraging individuals to achieve their goals – no matter how big or small! So, where can the dream begin? The Diamond Centre for Disabled Riders located along Woodmansterne Road, Surrey accommodates approximately 330 disabled riders of all ages with varying disabilities. They currently have 300 highly trained, friendly volunteers who assist in lessons and help with the day to day care of the yard and horses. The yard houses two indoor and one outdoor arena – to cater for all weather types – each with a raised mounting block and full disabled access. The Diamond Centre and their riders will be hoping to attend the RDA Regional Competition in the near future, in addition to the RDA Nationals in July this year. To contact The Diamond Centre for Disabled Riders tel: 0208 643 7764 or email: diamondcentre@tiscali. co.uk. The Mid Sussex RDA operates at The Chestnuts Riding School, Brighton. It hosts two riding sessions per week: adult sessions run from 10am – 12pm on Tuesdays and sessions for children are held between 9.30am – 12pm Tel: NagMag on 01273 491 922 or email: [email protected] June 2015 NagMag ❘ 05 Riding for the Disabled Riding for the Disabled Simon Blight – a local para rider and true inspiration – tells us his journey and how he found the strength to believe in himself and make the ‘impossible’ possible. Simon began riding at a young age before turning professional when he was sixteen. Like many young equestrians, Simon’s hobby soon became a career and he was regularly taking to the Showjumping circuit, aspiring to the likes of Harvey Smith. In addition to Showjumping Simon competed up to advance medium Dressage – he understood that his Showjumpers would benefit from the discipline of dressage and ultimately improve their performance in the ring. When not competing Simon would assist horses suffering from behavioural problems as well as run his own yard. At the age of 35 Simon’s world changed. After months of being transferred around hospital wards he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis – a disease affecting the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Understandably Simon was knocked back and spent the next two years away from the equine world with his wife Lyn and good friend, Katie, taking over the care of the yard and horses. Moments from giving up everything he was pulled back from the edge and, surrounded by his family and friends Simon gradually got back in the saddle and began learning to ride again. It took strength, ambition and self-belief, not to mention an incredible bond with his horses. Once back in the saddle Simon didn’t stop there – he organisations in the South East. Trying something new is always difficult and many choose to not take the leap, however sometimes it takes the words of another to give us a push in the right direction. went on to win the British Showjumping Para Club Title with his faithful seventeen year old showjumper. It was a real eye opener for Simon and just goes to show you can do anything you want to, no ifs and no buts. In addition to riding, Simon, his wife Lyn and close friends run Causeways Pony Parties and Therapy Ponies. The business allows children to learn, interact and paint the ponies! Simon explained, ‘Now-a-days horses have to compete with the likes of the x-box and social media. By making horse’s fun rather than a chore it will hopefully help to inspire the next generation of riders.’ When asked about his ambitions for the future Simon replied ‘I am going to have the time of my life!’ So with the Rio Olympics fast approaching he commented, ‘Although I would love to compete in Rio and my horses are more than capable it is not something that is set in stone. Having said that anything is possible and after all, the sky is the limit so we shall see…’ Simon wanted to finish by crediting his amazing wife Lyn and great friends for always being there behind the scenes, without them none of this would have been possible! After I finished the interview with Simon I took some time to think over his incredible journey and can honestly say my eyes to para riders and the RDA have been well and truly opened. Simon’s passion for horses shines through and his need to inject confidence into those riders who have been through life’s tough changes is stronger 06 ❘ NagMag Tel: NagMag on 01273 491 922 or email: [email protected] on Thursdays (term time only). NagMag caught up with her to find out how her love of reading inspired her to write. Writing from the heart N – an Author’s story agMag caught up with Amanda Wills, mumof-two, at her home near Faversham to find out how the books she read as a girl inspired her to write pony stories for a new generation of readers. Amanda has been writing all her life. But it wasn’t until three years ago that the former journalist turned her hand to fiction. Having grown up around horses, pony fiction seemed the obvious choice, and over the past three years Amanda has written and published three pony novels. Set on Dartmoor and in the Forest of Dean, the Riverdale Pony Stories are proving popular with both ponymad children and nostalgic older readers. in the back garden of our seaside home, but it didn’t wash – I had to make do with occasional lessons at our local riding school where I used to get bucked off by an irascible Shetland on a regular basis. Luckily for me, we moved to the country when I was ten and had enough space for a pony. Smudge was a 13hh schoolmaster who was an expert in undoing quick release knots – a trait I passed on to Frank the Shetland in Into the Storm. Tell me about the books: The first in the series, The Lost Pony of Riverdale, tells the story of eleven-year-old Poppy McKeever, who moves from London to an old cottage called Riverdale on the edge of Dartmoor. She finds a mysterious Connemara pony called Cloud running wild on the moor and vows to catch him before he is rounded up in the annual drift. In the second book, Against all Hope, Cloud is back at Riverdale but Poppy has a long road ahead of her to bring him back to full strength. Into the Storm, the third in the series, sees Poppy winning a riding holiday in the Forest of Dean where What made you start writing fiction? When I was eleven, the age of my fictional heroine Poppy McKeever, I was as pony-mad as she is. The bookshelves in my bedroom groaned under the weight of countless pony books by the Pullein-Thompson sisters, Ruby Ferguson, Patricia Leitch, Elyne Mitchell and Monica Edwards. When I’d read and re-read them all I began writing my own stories, with the starring role going to my Welsh Section B pony Smudge. Years passed. I left school, became a reporter for a local newspaper and forgot all about the pony books. But the desire to write fiction was always there, in the back of my mind. Three years ago I finally took the plunge, flipped open the laptop and began typing. Why pony fiction? They say write what you know, and I definitely know what it’s like to be a pony-mad, pony-less girl. I spent years trying to convince my parents that we could keep a pony 12 ❘ NagMag June 2015 she is dismayed to find her ride for the week is Beau, a hairy, bumbling piebald cob with a wall eye and a stubborn streak. Where do you get your inspiration for the equine heroes in your books? Definitely from the many ponies and horses I have had the privilege to know and ride. Cloud, Poppy’s beloved dappled grey Connemara, was inspired by my own Connemara pony, Hamilton. He was a 14.1hh fleabitten grey. I was thirteen when we bought him, not much older than Poppy, and we grew up together, hacking through the countryside, competing in local shows and taking part in cross country rides. Sadly he died eleven years ago, but we’d had twenty happy years together, for which I will always be grateful. And the fact that he lives on through Cloud makes me very happy indeed. Beau, the star of Into the Storm, is a mash-up of all the stubborn but unerringly loyal horses who have crossed my path over the years. How long do your books take to write? The Lost Pony of Riverdale took just over a year. Against all Hope took about ten months and Into the Storm about eight months from start to finish. So I’m getting quicker! Writing has to fit around my family and my part-time job as a police press officer, so I often write in the evenings and at weekends to make sure I meet my word count targets. Amanda and Prince For Advertising Opportunities visit www.NagMagMagazine.com Do you still ride? I had a break of about ten years when my two boys were small, but not having horses in my life was an ache that never went away. Just over a year ago I was lucky enough to be offered a part-share in a gorgeous 16.2hh Irish sports horse called Prince. I leapt at the chance and now ride every Thursday. It’s the highlight of my week. Not only is it great being back in the saddle, but being around horses again gives me plenty of ideas for future books. What’s the best thing about being an author? When someone tells you they loved one of your books. Poppy, her best friend Scarlett and their ponies Cloud and Blaze are completely real to me, so nothing makes me happier than knowing other people are enjoying their adventures. Is pony fiction as popular as ever? Absolutely. There’s a really talented bunch of pony authors out there at the moment, some traditionally published, others who have decided to self-publish their novels as e-books. Lauren St John, Kate Lattey, Victoria Eveleigh and fellow Kent author Jane Ayres are just some of the authors I would recommend. I chose to self-publish the Riverdale Stories on Kindle, but two of the books have since been taken on by a Scandinavian publisher and will be enjoyed by hundreds of pony-mad girls in Sweden, Norway and Finland later this year. Will there be more Riverdale Stories? Definitely. I have rough plots for at least two more in the series. I just need to get them written. One thing’s for certain – the characters are so alive in my imagination that I couldn’t bear to let them go just yet. T WORDS : Beth Chamberlin IMAGE : Kitty Lane he sense of smell to the animal kingdom plays such an important role, not only as a way to communicate and identify others of the same or different species, but also plays a vital role in how they relate to medicinal plants. Since the dawn of time animals have evolved an innate ability in which they are able to self-select medicines that nature has provided for survival. This behaviour of animals seeking medicinal plants for health benefits is known as Zoopharmacognosy. Wild animals are able to seek out medicinal plants at the first signs of poor health, but because our domesticated animals rarely have the opportunity to forage on a wide variety of medicinal plants, more challenging health problems often occur. Applied Zoopharmacognosy takes nature’s medicine kit to them, allowing the animal to express its innate ability to self-medicate by offering a wide range of plant compounds such as essential oils, macerated oils, dried herbs, powders, clays and algae. Animals with the same symptoms may choose to select a different remedy which is why this approach highlights the fact that this is individualized medicine. What is the difference between food and a medicine? Plants provide two main resources to animals. Firstly they provide a food source which provides direct energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins needed to maintain life and growth. A plant also provides medicinal compounds which when not needed, can be detrimental, the body then has to rid itself of the toxin. Animals have developed specialized detoxifying enzymes in order to do this. The complex relationship between plants and animals has enabled animals to acquire a taste for a plant containing a particular compound that is needed, whilst for a healthy animal it would be deterred by its bitterness and perhaps putrid smell. The theory suggests that a plant’s pleasantness of taste and smell can change depending on the state of the animals’ health and this is how the animal can dose itself. Once the animal has resolved its health problem, taste and smell preferences should revert back to normal. A commonly asked question is why the animal is selecting a plant extract that it has never encountered 14 ❘ NagMag June 2015 Littlehampton Store during its life for health benefits. Plants contain many chemical constituents that are shared by different plant species across the globe and, through the relationship that has evolved, animals are able to detect therapeutic compounds within plants rather than the plant as a whole. For example Linalool, the principle constituent in Lavender, can be found in over 200 species of plant throughout the world. Based on these principles it is advised not to add medicinal compounds to feed as, if not needed, the animal has no control over its dose and it may cause adverse effects. Equinepharmacognosy specializes in self-medication with equines and provides a holistic approach to horse health. During a consultation, reading an animal’s body language in response to an extract offered is key to determining whether or not it has been selected. It is important that animals are allowed to walk away from a remedy that is not needed as that ensures that it is not forced upon them. Each animal is different in its response to an extract and may only show subtle signs of interest when an extract is needed. Depending on the issue facing the animal, remedies may have differing routes into the body. Self-medication may be in the form of ingestion, inhalation, including the flehmens response (curling of upper lip) which is the use of the vomeronasal organ and applied topically. Once the condition has cleared or improved the animal will normally reject the plant extracts that have previously been selected. But I’ll be really pleased when I look back next week!” Nana Dalton, from Northchapel, West Sussex, thought a glass of champagne was the appropriate next step after completing on Absolut Opposition. “This has been a very special journey with Miley as I used to compete with his mother,” she said. “I have a great belief in this horse and feel he has a huge future in front of him.” Francis Whittington, Harry Dzenis and Australian Christopher Burton acquitted themselves well on Hasty Imp, Xam and TS Jamaimo respectively while Greenlawn WORDS : Stephanie Dewitt IMAGES : Julian Portch I n a nail-biting finish that went right to the wire, William Fox-Pitt claimed this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Trophy riding the 15 year-old Chilli Morning, owned by Christopher Stone of Plummers Plain, West Sussex, and the only stallion to have won this prestigious 4* competition. Andrew Nicholson and Nereo led all the way from the first morning’s dressage and were last to showjump on Sunday. However, three fences fell to see Andrew and his mount finish in sixth place while William took top honours with a perfect round. Germany’s Ingrid Klimke also jumped clear on Horseware Hale Bob to finish in second place, with Kiwi, Jock Paget in third with Clifton Lush. Emotions ran high with south-eastern riders completing their first Badminton. Rose Carnegie, a 24 year-old student 16 ❘ NagMag June 2015 Nana Dalton on Absolut Opposition from Kent in her final year at the European School of Osteopathy, took time out from exams to compete Landine, her 12 year-old German Warmblood mare. “I was worried about the Mirage Pond on the cross-country course,” she said, “but the horse was fine going through it. Surrey’s Pippa Funnell rose forty places in the ranks with Second Supreme and finished in 12th place with Redesigned. Just below her was Gemma Tattersall from Plummers Plain riding Arctic Soul, a full Thoroughbred who raced as a 6 year-old. After a disappointing technical elimination last year, the pair jumped clear cross-country but lowered three fences in the showjumping phase. “He’s a relentless galloper,” said Gemma. “He just skips Gemma Tattersall with Arctic Soul at the 1st Horse Inspection across the ground. But he picked up on the electric atmosphere in the arena, got tense and tight in the neck and took the poles down behind. He’s a fit and sound horse, relatively young, so we look forward to the future.” The last word went to the cross-country course designer, Guiseppe della Chiesa: “I planned the course thinking about the possible conditions. And show jumping season…and dressage season…and Sunshine Tour qualifier season, so far 987 of you have qualified and registered for The Sunshine Tour ‘extravaganza’ to be held at Hickstead Showground on 18 – 20 September. Andrew kingsley Qualified: SMP Events - Blue Barn, 05/04/2015 Showing: In-Hand Coloured Horse or Pony, 3rd In-Hand Youngstock, 3rd Rosie Farmer Andrew kingsley is 55 years old. He and his wife have owned our little filly The Longhouse Little Star since she was three months old and it seemed forever before they got her home at six months from Wales. She has helped them through a very hard illness and always lifts them when they see her every morning and night. She has been a joy to own and been very successful in her showing career from a yearling to present as a 3-year-old. She is out of Tiny Bit Famous and Doylan Little Treasure star is welsh/arab/American saddlebred. Rosie Farmer Qualified: Shedfield Equestrian 12/04/2015 Show Jumping 90cm, 2nd Georgia Trenfield Rosie lives in Lymington Hampshire on the edge of the New Forest. She belongs to Mopley Riding club. Rosie is 11 years old and has been riding since she was 5 years old. The pony she qualified on is a 13.3hh New Forest cross welsh mare who’s name is Jess. She has had Jess for eight months. Georgia Trenfield Qualified: Shedfield Equestrian 05/04/2015 Dressage BD Intro, 6th Georgia has been riding seriously for about 4½ years now. Unfortunately, Georgia had a very nasty accident a few years ago which completely knocked her confidence with riding but she still was determined to be with horses. We were lucky enough to find Splash, who had spent the last 13 years of his life as a riding school pony and was about as safe as they come. He looked, sadly, as though the life had been sucked out of him and never really showed any spark but such a dear dear face and we just hoped we could give him back a little of what he had given to others. Unfortunately, Splash had become known as a steady old plodder who would never do anything more than a very reluctant trot, he was often the brunt of many a joke. This didn’t worry us because we could see life coming back into his eyes and felt secure that he would never put a foot wrong with Georgia so was perfect for us. Apparently, he had suffered a leg injury about six years ago and the reports were varying, ranging from just a kick to a broken pelvis no less. We took our time and ignored some nasty comments at times, we had his back checked, a new saddle, regular physio and sat back and watched the two of them blossom. We were to only face one more setback with Georgia and it could have been much worse; shortly after buying Splash Georgia was diagnosed with a curve to her spine. The consultant suspected Neurofribromatosis 1, a life changing, degenerative condition, albeit it has just been confirmed as NF Type 1 syndrome; a much better prognosis. Throughout all of this very trying time, Splash was an absolute rock to Georgia and gave her and us a reason to keep going. Georgia’s confidence with Splash is growing all the time and they now hold their heads high and a cheeky flick of the tail as they dance into the dressage tests. Splash has become a very handsome boy and they both love in hand showing and have gained some super results picking up two 1sts and Reserve Champion at a local show last year. Finally, after just over two long years, people are starting to see that he is a thousand things more than just an old riding centre pony. His new nickname is “The Ledge” because he is a legend, so many people say “ooh, is that Splash, I did my first jump or trot or canter on him” and he truly is loved by everyone. He is so much of a legend he is actually getting younger and not older. I was renewing his passport and traced his family tree, which is particularly impressive, and discovered he is actually 17 now and not 18. He will never cease to amaze us. So who would of thought that the down trodden riding centre pony and a little girl too nervous to even sit on her own pony are now counting the days and practising hard to compete at Hickstead on The Sunshine Tour and who knows, maybe they will just win! 18 ❘ NagMag June 2015 For Advertising Opportunities visit www.NagMagMagazine.com June 2015 DATE TYPE 02/06/2015 Dressage 03/06/2015 Dressage 04/06/2015 D/SJ/Showing 04/06/2015 Dressage 05/06/2015 D/SJ/Showing 06/06/2015 Show Jumping 06/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 06/06/2015 Dressage 06/06/2015 Dressage 06/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 07/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 07/06/2015 Showing 07/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 07/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 07/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 07/06/2015 D/SJ/Showing 07/06/2015 D/SJ/Showing 07/06/2015 Dressage 07/06/2015 Dressage 07/06/2015 D/SJ/EC/Showing 07/06/2015 Dressage 07/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 07/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 07/06/2015 Dressage 07/06/2015 D/SJ/EC 07/06/2015 Dressage 07/06/2015 SJ/EC/Showing 07/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 11/06/2015 Dressage 11/06/2015 Dressage 12/06/2015 D/SJ/EC/Showing 13/06/2015 Dressage 13/06/2015 Dressage 13/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 13/06/2015 Dressage 14/06/2015 Dressage 14/06/2015 D/SJ/Showing 14/06/2015 Dressage/Showing 14/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 14/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 14/06/2015 Dressage 14/06/2015 Dressage 14/06/2015 Dressage 14/06/2015 Dressage 14/06/2015 Dressage 14/06/2015 Dressage 15/06/2015 Dressage 16/06/2015Dressage 17/06/2015 D/SJ/EC 17/06/2015Dressage 18/06/2015 Dressage 20/06/2015 Dressage & SJ 20/06/2015 D/SJ/EC 20/06/2015 Dressage 20/06/2015 SJ/EC/Showing 20/06/2015 Dressage 20/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 21/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 21/06/2015 Showing 21/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 21/06/2015 Showing 21/06/2015 SJ/EC/Showing 21/06/2015 Dressage 21/06/2015 Dressage 21/06/2015 Showing 21/06/2015 D/SJ/Showing 21/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 21/06/2015 D/SJ/EC 24/06/2015 Dressage 24/06/2015 Dressage 25/06/2015 Dressage 27/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 27/06/2015 SJ/EC/Showing 27/06/2015 Show Jumping/EC 27/06/2015 Dressage 28/06/2015 SJ/Showing ❘ Sunshine Tour 2015 Qualifying Dates CENTRE Keysoe Keysoe Northallerton EC Pachesham EC Northallerton EC Bookham RC Northallerton EC Bury Farm Equestrian Club Acrecliffe EC Balhagan Equestrian Services Rogate & District RC Old Bexley Pony Club Northallerton EC Fawkham & District RC Goring & District RC Pachesham EC Great Bookham EC Shedfield Equestrian Elstead RC Long Eaton RC Isle of Wight M&M Pony Society Shotfield Equestrian Sykehouse Arena Capricorn Equestrian White House Farm Equestrian Mid Sussex RC Silsden RC Petley Wood EC Pachesham EC Wisbech & District RC Long Eaton RC Northallerton EC Redhorse Dressage Bury Farm Equestrian Club Chelsham & Bromley RC Rogate & District RC Pachesham EC Hangleton Farm EC Mortimer RC Bury Farm Equestrian Club Shotfield Equestrian F.S. In addition to owning four of her own horses, she launched iRide Training – an audio training system – which went on to be awarded the ‘2014 Best Technology in a Single Sport’ at the Sports Tech Awards. Alison spent the day at Total Confidence Live running dressage clinics - riders were asked to ride a Dressage test of their choice and then given a twenty minute one to one session on how to improve the horse and riders way of going. Jake Poynter, 21, from Horam, Sussex brought along Rufus – a five year old German Warmblood. When asked about his plans for himself and Rufus, Jake cheerily replied ‘I will take him as far as we can go!’ I caught up with Jake after Alison’s clinic to see how it went, he commented: ‘I think it went very well, we received positive feedback and I agree with Alison’s comments!’ Despite the cold winds and slight drizzle, the day was a huge success with equestrians attending from a wide geographical area. I think I speak for everyone when I say this is one of the best up and coming equine events in the UK and I look forward to what they will be offering next year. NM Total Confidence Live was held at the South of England Show ground on the 25th and 26th April 2015. The event included something for everyone - from shopping and demonstrations to rescued horses and clinics. Jason Webb – renowned horse trainer – and Charlie Owen – phycologist to olympic and world champions – delivered a popular and well received demonstration which aimed to link the minds of both humans and horses. Jason explained that listening to your horses actions can help us as owners, riders and handlers to be more proactive in our training. In addition Charlie discussed the ‘fear of failure’ – and by replacing any negative comments and thoughts with postives ones it can enhance a riders ability to achieve their goals. Something I believe many of us will now consider. After searching the whole showground I finally bumped into Alison Short – renowned freelance Dressage trainer and British Dressage judge.
