The German immigrant first came here when College Point Boulevard was little more than a dirt road. In 868 the Poppenhusen Institute that stands to this day was built with funds donated by the philanthropist. The original charter specified that the institute be open to all, irrespective of race, creed or religion, giving people the opportunity to improve their lives. At one time the institute housed the Justice of the Peace, the first home of the College Point Savings Bank, German Singing Societies, the first library in the area, a court room, the Sheriff’s Office with two jail cells and the first free kindergarten in the United States. The Institute was designated a N.Y.C. Landmark in 1970. Today the Institute continues to serve College Point as a community cultural center housing a variety of programs including: karate for children and adults; group piano lessons and community theater. Adhering to its original charter, it is the goal of the Institute to provide a warm, welcoming and encouraging environment to all who pass through Conrad’s “Doorway of Opportunity.” PSCH 718-559-0516 [email protected] There are times when people don’t know where to turn either because of personal challenges or difficulties a loved one is facing. Qside Federal Credit Union thinks the answer is simple. Qside Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit, cooperative financial institution owned and controlled by its members – the people who use its products and services. Like all other credit unions, Qside is based on the concept of “people helping people.” Unlike banks, Qside returns all profits to its members in the form of higher dividends on savings, lower interest rates on loans, lower fees and expanded services. Today, Qside has more than $45 million in assets and serves over 8,500 members with a field of membership that includes people who live and work in our local Queens community. As Qside has grown, so has its commitment to its members-first, notfor-profit philosophy. They know how important it is that your hard-earned money be kept safe.
