Winter
in
Kitzbühel
Winter magic in Kitzbühel.
Over the Mausefalle (mousetrap), around the Hausbergkante and through the Zielschuss (final stretch):
The finish line at the legendary Streif racing piste always hums with excitement, as people capture the
action in snapshots that are shared the world over.
Still, Kitzbühel has so much more to offer than just
the Hahnenkamm Races, even in winter, when gleaming sunlight dances across the powdery snow. The
fir trees are all coated in white, the snow crunches under your feet and the air is cold and clear. From November to May, the leisure capital of Tirol is well and
truly transformed into a winter wonderland. Every
year, the snow returns without fail – excellent news
for the Kitzbühel ski area and its 209 kilometres of
meticulously prepared slopes of all degrees of difficulty, including the most spectacular ski run in the world
– the Streif racing piste. The mixture of sport, culture
and nature here makes Kitzbühel truly unique –
365 days a year.
Still, not everyone comes here for downhill skiing. Visitors can also enjoy a fairytale-like winter paradise
away from the slopes – for example, on the perfectly
groomed cross-country ski trails, during winter and
snowshoe walks, on horse-drawn sleigh rides or simply when strolling through the historic town centre
on a crisp and sunny winter’s day.
Sport is important in Kitzbühel, but the town has so
much more to offer too. It is also home to a dazzling
array of events, each one more spectacular than the
last. There’s the Kitzbühel Advent, with the traditional Christmas Market in the Old Town, where the air
is filled with the scent of Glühwein (mulled wine) and
roasted chestnuts, and the sound of church bells. And
when things get too cold, you can warm yourself up at
the shepherd’s fire. Another unforgettable experience
is the magnificent fireworks show that caps off the
town’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. Kitzbühel exudes
an idyllic, romantic charm. However, it also has a
chic, cosmopolitan side. For example, numerous local
celebrities and international athletes, artists and actors flock to the town when it hosts the Snow Polo
World Cup or the Hahnenkamm Races. In other
words, Kitzbühel has many fascinating faces.
The history
of skiing
in Kitzbühel
Kitzbühel has been making skiing history
since 1893.
Kitzbühel literally breathes history. This is the place where legends are
born. No other ski resort in the Alps can look back on such a long and
successful tradition of skiing.
An inseparable part of this history and tradition is Franz Reisch: After
his initial attempts at skiing in December 1892, this native of Kitzbühel
successfully completed the first ever high Alpine ski run in Austria
from the Kitzbüheler Horn on 15 March 1893. Reisch is thus one of the
most important skiing pioneers in the Alpine region. Additional major
Kitzbühel milestones include the construction of the Hahnenkamm
bahn as the first ropeway for sport in Austria, the successes of Toni
Sailer and the skiing Wunderteam and the ascendance of ski instruction in Kitzbühel under the leadership of Karl Koller. Kitzbühel has
been shaped by people whose names remain legendary to this day.
Toni Sailer and the
Kitzbühel skiing Wunderteam
Toni Sailer’s skiing successes and
charisma transformed him into the
first global media star in winter
sports in 1956. He and the Kitzbühel
Wunderteam dominated the world
of skiing for ten years.
Kitzbühel Ski Club
The Kitzbühel Ski Club, which was
founded way back in 1902, is certainly one of the biggest and most famous ski clubs in the world. The club
has more than 7,700 members from
20 countries, and the success of its
athletes remains unmatched by any
other club in the world. The club’s
most important activities include organising the Hahnenkamm Races
and helping young people hone their
skills in all types of skiing disciplines.
Hahnenkamm Races
Every year, the world’s best skiers
come to Kitzbühel to celebrate the
highlight of the World Cup calendar. The Streif racing piste is considered to be the most spectacular
ski run in the world. Fans, reporters
and celebrities from around the
globe come to Kitzbühel.
The World’s Best Ski Resort.
And the winner is ... It’s “snowing” prizes, seals of quality and award
certificates. For years now, Kitzbühel and the Bergbahn Kitzbühel
have been “snowed under” with international honours and awards
– everything from the Piste Seal of Quality in Gold to the awards for
Austria’s Best Ski Resort and the World’s Best Ski Resort. These
accolades make Kitzbühel proud – and bring joy to its visitors, who
get to experience all their skiing dreams come true.

Skiing. The pure joy of winter.
Skiing
Skiing in Kitzbühel. A perfect leap out over the piste, kicking up the
powder on the freeride slope: This is skiing at its best – better than in
a dream because this dream comes true 180 days a year. The dream
also begins earlier in Kitzbühel than almost anywhere else, as over the
last few years, Kitzbühel has consistently been the first non-glacial ski
area in Austria to open for the winter season.
These days, skiers can look forward to the world famous Streif racing
piste and an additional 60 ski runs. A total of 54 cableways and lifts
ferry passengers way above Kitzbühel to peaks as high as 2,000 metres
above sea level. Ski runs with a total length of 209 kilometres, and 36
kilometres of ski trails, get winter sports enthusiasts’ hearts racing.
Kitzbüheler Horn: The “family mountain”. Soft inclines, wide slopes
and pure joy for adventurers young and old. Beginning in the 2016/17
season, a new snowmaking facility will ensure even greater snow
reliability at Kitzbüheler Horn.
Important note: The Rasmusleiten, Mocking, Ministreif (Kitzbühel),
Hausleiten (Jochberg), Pass Thurn, Reith and Aschau practice lifts
can all be used FREE OF CHARGE.
Ski season start and Advent
The Kitzbühel ski season will begin
at Resterhöhe on 24 October 2016
and at Hahnenkamm on 5 November 2016. The magical Kitzbühel
Advent celebrations will begin on
24 November.
The Easter Bunny in Kitzbühel
Easter: Perfect conditions on the
slopes – and the magic of spring in
the town. NEW: A vibrant week-long
programme full of surprises. Details
in November at: www.kitzbuehel.com
Romantic lodges and huts
A total of 56 mountain huts and restaurants contribute to a charming
romantic atmosphere in the mountains. Visitors can enjoy a culinary
selection ranging from local delicacies to gourmet dishes.
Miles & More
Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel and other
local companies are Miles & More
partners. That means you can earn
bonus miles – or spend them – when
you go skiing in Kitzbühel.
Come on Kids...
Ski schools
for
children
... and have some fun in the snow. Anyone who wants to be a downhill ski racer some day would best get started in Kitzbühel. The young
ones may start out on legs that are a little shaky – but pretty soon
they’re flying down the practice piste. Certified snow sport instructors show them how things are done, and the next thing you know
the kids are doing carve turns. What fun indeed!
Kitzbühel has three ski schools that offer special instruction for children. All of them have a Kinderland, which ensures the children will
have fun learning from the very beginning. The schools are also
staffed by trained ski instructors who pay attention to the special
needs of the future stars of the slopes.
Ski school Kitzbühel – Rote Teufel
Fun and games in the Rote Teufel
Kinderland. Instruction for children three years old and up, racing
school for older children and teens,
freeride and youth groups.
Element 3
Learning to ski is child’s play in the
element3 Kids’ Wonderland at the
Ganslern lift; maximum of six children per group; racing and freeride
groups.
Skischule Reith
Instruction for children from 10:00
to 15:30, early beginners’ course for
children up to three years of age, allday child care in the HUBSI Bambini
Club for little ones two years and up.
NEW: Bärenland
Located at Bärenbadkogel II in
Jochberg, this skills obstacle course
is 500 metres long and lined with
nearly life-size bear figurines.
Individually trained.
Ski schools
Whether it’s individual or group instruction, or Alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing or freeriding – Kitzbühel’s ski schools
have highly trained snow sport instructors who teach both beginners
and advanced learners everything they need to know in the snow.
Once they reach a certain stage, students are taken by guides up to
the most beautiful deep powder slopes, or on unforgettable ski tours
in the picturesque Kitzbühel mountains.

Freeriding

The desire to experience nature, freedom and adventure. A passion
for powder snow. The inability to resist the allure of the mountain.
Kitzbühel’s gentle grass-covered mountains are perfect for ski slopes
and off-slope skiing alike. Just 50 centimetres of snow on the grasscovered flanks is enough to enjoy the pleasure of deep snow.
Fields of white powder, narrow gullies and spectacular cliff drops
are just waiting to be pounded by skis and snowboards.
Kitzbüheler Horn and Bichlalm are home to very popular freeride
segments. The “Snowcat” is an ultramodern snow grooming vehicle
with a piggy-back cabin that can transport 25 people from the
Bichlalm mountain station all the way up to Stuckkogel.
Freeriders can look forward to 60 varied slopes with 15 valley runs.
