4 Behind The One Bride Guide Cover
There have been several vendors who have really stepped
up and joined me in the past few years in elevating our
area to a new level in production, design and entertainment. Since Corpus Christi operates like a small
town, when people say "it's who you know" I don't
consider that to be snobby, to me it's about creating
relationships. I treasure those valuable relationships.
They overlap into every venture I'm involved in and it's
why I've always been in the business of communication.
Some of those vendors include (but aren't limited to)
The Ortiz Center, Dr. Rockstar, Josh & Co. and Get
Jeweled Productions. All four of these vendors (again,
among others) have donated in a major way to The
One and my other passion, The Ritz Theatre restoration. Two other vendors, Julian Gold and Gold Master
Jewelers, have brought a whole new level of style and
sophistication to The One, better than I could dream
of. Before Julian Gold and Gold Master came along,
our cover shoot style was organized around what was
readily available (not counting Deux Boheme who
practically hand-made every item for their shoot).
With these vendors, we are able to take a concept to
them and they partner with us to bring that vision to a
reality - for a high-class creative wedding shoot. We are
proud and feel blessed by every issue in our history for
the talent and selflessness that was brought to the table
for the combined dream of showing Corpus Christi
the creativity that exists here.
The
After sharing ideas with the Ortiz Center, they agreed
to open their entire venue for the event to help make
it completely unique. We will have the traditional vendor expo, but are moving the fashion show into it's
own space and making that bigger than ever. Our wish
came true when the most fashionable store in town,
Julian Gold, signed on to put together THREE big
shows for our conference. It's going to be like a mini
fashion week, packed into one day! Dr. Rockstar, one
of the best in the biz, will transport you into a production that is right out of New York. And of course
Josh & Co. and Get Jeweled are putting their stamp on
the fashion show and many other parts of the event.
One of the features I'm most excited about is for the
Grooms! I know the poor Grooms get dragged to every wedding event, registry outing and many things
they are less than thrilled to attend. So we wanted to
give them something special. The One Spot, a special
Grooms area, will make them glad they came. Republic
Distributing will be showing the Grooms how to create
a signature drink for their reception. Guys can hang
out, participate in the drink tasting, cigar bar and
enjoy music by Dr. Rockstar's DJ booth among other
guy-focused vendors.
ne
The big differences in The One Inside Out are the
workshops, taking place all day. Various vendors will
be sharing their expertise. From style tips to choosing
a dj vs a band, the workshops will give couples a sense
of what they can really expect as well as help plan their
dream wedding. A marriage counselor will be giving
advice on how to establish the best relationship to get
you past the ups and downs and into a life-long loving commitment. We are also planning a panel of real
couples for a question/answer session so you can find
out what it's like from real experiences.

This issue brings big changes both for The One and
me personally. As I write this letter, I have a week and
a half before I give birth to my second daughter (talk
about cutting it close!). Luckily, timing worked out
perfectly with press schedules and the baby's due date!
AND, I have a great team of people to help get The
One printed to perfection and out on stands while I am
busy loving my new bundle of joy. Many of my friends
ask, "So, are you cutting back and slowing down now?"
Just the opposite! In fact, it was soon after I found out
I was pregnant that I decided to expand our offerings
with The One. Am I crazy? Probably. But it's hard to
resist when there are so many Brides and people planning events calling or writing on a weekly basis about
how much The One has helped them. It brings me so
much joy to hear this and It's why I started the magazine. So why slow down now?
Noyola + Alejandre
Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Noyola are proud to announce
the engagement of their daughter, Crystal Noyola
of Corpus Christi, Texas to Jose Alejandre of
Corpus Christi, Texas. Jose is the son of Mr. Jose
A. Alejandre of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Patricia
Garcia of San Antonio, Texas. The wedding will be
held on November 3rd, 2012.

We hope you'll join us for The One Inside Out as well
as keep the magazine flourishing by submitting your
fabulous wedding to be featured for the next issue.
After all, our hard work is just for you! Because the
reality is, the wedding business is about love. And we
love being a part of your special day!

When The Ortiz Center approached me about doing President/Creative Director
a wedding event, I immediately called on the group McLeod Creative & The One Bride Guide
mentioned above to help make it happen. They have
risen to the challenge to help me launch the
first ever wedding and marriage conference in
Corpus Christi, The One Inside Out, taking
place January 6th, 2013 from 11-5. I am so
thrilled about this new venture. The One
Inside Out is not just another wedding fair.
It was clear to me years ago that if we put on
a wedding event, it had to be different in a
big way. We wanted the event to be more like
educational conferences you see with other
industries, offering classes and other features that would be appealing enough for
Brides to stick around all day and walk
away full of ideas and hope for their
future. We wanted Brides to gain insight about planning their wedding

Dr. and Mrs. Mathew Alexander's Dancing Elk Ranch
is getting primed for weddings and it's a venue most
people would recognize, but few have visited. The big
white house on the hill is hard to miss, as it sits high
on your right as you get about 30 minutes outside of
Corpus Christi driving to San Antonio on I-37. Traditionally a hunting ranch, Mathew and Jenny Alexander
are hard at work bringing Dancing Elk an additional
purpose, turning the property into an ideal wedding
venue. They were the epitome of hospitality when we
asked to do our cover shoot there, giving our team a
full tour, going off-road to allow us to see the menagerie of exotic animals, including their recent acquisitions from a petting zoo, Seymore the camel and three
zebras, one of which was a baby and was born on the
property. The Alexander's ranch is gigantic. Within the
1500+ acres of rolling hills, not only did we see the animals and grand residence, but traveling toward the back
of the property, the Alexanders have built first class
lodging for guests in addition to fully upgrading two
guest houses that were already on site. We got a sneak
peak of the architectural plans for the massive wedding
and party barn they are planning which will also have
top-shelf amenities and be perfect for large events. As
the work is being completed (set to be finished by mid
2013), interested Brides can contact them about having
an outdoor or tent wedding, which is still a gorgeous
opportunity (as you can see from our photos). It was so
hard to choose between the animal shots or the images
we got in the unique gazebo, sitting quaintly under two
giant trees at the base of a hill by a pond.
I've had my eye on the work of John Ryan Seaman for
awhile through our City Church community. He recently launched his own photography and videography
business, Granola Tech, and is already turning heads.
This guy is a genius when it comes to the technical side of
cameras (and every other gadget) and the world is finally
taking notice that he has the creative side to match. John
Ryan was so great to work with, creating story boards of
images to create a look for the shoot to marry well with
the natural features of the venue. Together with stylist
extraordinare, Josh Salinas of Josh & Co. and fab decorator, Greg Ybarra of Get Jeweled Productions, the
three were able to create an exotic, natural loveliness,
perfect for the day and the Bride, model Alicia Renck
(who by the way isn't just a model). Alicia is a Biomedical Sciences major at Texas A&M University - Corpus
Christi. She's on the pre-med track and was undergoing interviews with 9 different medical schools at the
time! Wow! Beauty and brains times ten!
Getting the perfect shot for the cover was no easy task,
but we had some amazing people and props to make it
happen. John Ryan's wife, Bethany, was second shooter and captured our behind-the-scenes images while
Valarie Solis assisted Josh Salinas in making Alicia look
amazing. Julian Gold, who has become a valuable partner with The One, was willing to risk exposure to the
natural location with two exquisite gowns. The cover
gown was by designer Christos, retailing at $5,200.
The second gown, seen on the top of the next page,
was a Romona Kereza, retailing at $6,130. In addition
to those pieces, Gold Master Jewelers delivered once
again (how do we keep getting so lucky?) with over
$15,000 worth of jewels. Our Bride wore citrine earrings from the Haytayan line retailing for $3,808 and
her engagement ring was a 1 carat princess cut Giovanni Seth diamond accompanied by yellow and round
diamonds retailing for $11,900! Thank you for trusting us Julian Gold and Gold Master! What an honor!
While one team headed off to try and get a shot with the
zebras, Greg Ybarra and his Get Jeweled Team, Sarah Luna, Gloria Luna and Joe Liz Villareal were busy
preparing the gazebo. Greg, with the help of Marilyn
Moore, also created three amazing bouquets for us.
The zebra shot, which we thought was going to be our
money shot, didn't turn out that way. When Mathew
and Jenny were feeding the zebras to keep them close,
cows and a very pushy billy goat made their way over
and decided they wanted to be difficult. The billy goat
especially scared me into my car as he head-butted the
Alexander's off-road vehicle and gave me an evil eye
saying "you're next!" I can't wait to see the behind the
scenes video footage of that chaos from Jason Page!
Mathew suggested we get a shot with Seymore the
camel, and as you can see, he stole our hearts. Seymore was super friendly, easy to work with, and really
turned out to be quite the show camel. It was almost
as if he knew he was being photographed as he posed
and turned and even gave a kiss to Alicia!
The next stop was the gazebo towards the front of the
property. The Alexander's were so hospitable, they
even painted the gazebo and nearby bridge in preparation for our shoot. They were amazing! The Get
Jeweled team created two separate looks on the gazebo
which made me want to stay and have my own little
party under the canopy. Their creativity made it super hard to choose the winning look!

With most weddings, stars must align to
have the best hair, the right makeup,
the most delicious food, the
prettiest flowers, and the most
behaved guests. Another intergalactic miracle must happen
to start on time and to have
everyone involved actually
enjoy it.
Unless: you hire the best kept
secret in the industry to make all
things wedding work - a wedding
planner. Now imagine how perfect your day would be by hiring
that person times two.
Josh Salinas and Greg
Ybarra work to make
sure Brides, Grooms,
families and everyone
along the way experience the wedding of
a lifetime. But the
pair did not become
wedding planners by
trade. Flowers, seating charts and timelines
found them.
Josh Salinas and Greg Ybarra
Salinas, owner and operator of Josh &
Co. Salon, and Ybarra, owner of Get
Jeweled Productions, prove to be a powerful and unique pair. They are guardians of
fabulous, gatekeepers of fierce, and
masters of all things detail oriented,
including punctuality, all at once.
For Josh, a typical wedding day salon
appointment includes delicate platters
of wine and cheese, bubbly champagne and a beautiful presentation.
A glam squad that includes Alanha, Gabriella, Crystal, Valarie, Randy and Maria
help to take care of the bridal party.
“My passion is hair – it’s what I do best
and it’s what I love,” Salinas said. “On a
wedding day, even though I may
be responsible for other things, I
do everyone’s hair.
Becky North, one of Salinas’
Brides, skipped her lifetime
hairstylist for the wedding.
“I just knew he would do
a good job, and my hair
was beautiful. Josh said it
would be great and it was
perfect,” she said.
Salinas’ reputation for managing dream-come-true weddings is quickly
taking equal pairing with his reputation for

{8}
good hair. Services as a wedding planner
are more and more requested.
“I have learned to be a solid wedding planner because I have worked with some pretty
bad ones,” Salinas said. “I just kept noticing
my Brides would come in for hair and they
would be having horrible days, on their own
wedding day. I knew I could do better because I knew how to do better.”
Roxy and Jared Quintanilla, a young couple who sought the services of Salinas, said
since they have no family in
the area, they depended on him to make
the day work – even
under extreme
circumstances.
“Weather was a big
issue apparently,
but I never knew,”
Roxy said. “I heard
that at some point
weather was threatening the venue and
the whole day, but Josh
took care of everything. He
never let me know the elements could have
caused a problem on my wedding day.”
Risks, like choosing to make decisions for
Brides on their special day and considering
factors like weather, have earned serious rewards. Salinas’ reputation is traveling faster
than good gossip. His forte is a different
perspective he brings to Texas weddings.
He spent nearly ten years in Southern
Georgia learning the established ways
of Southern etiquette. He infuses that life
experience into each wedding.
“There’s a genteel way in the South that’s
very different from Texas, and that starts
with etiquette,” Salinas said. “I make those
demands on my Brides because I know
that when they ask for ‘elegant’ or ‘sophisticated,’ I know what they mean even if
they do not know how to get there.”
He stays by the Bride’s side
from the moment the rehearsal dinner begins to the
end of the reception the
next day.
On the opposite side of
the proverbial wedding
coin, Ybarra makes sure
that all of this happens in
the most beautiful atmosphere imaginable.
Five years ago, Ybarra started
a floral decorating business to
satisfy his creative side.
When Diane Self’s daughter,
Lauren, became engaged, Self
said two words kept coming
to mind: Elegant and Fun. She
knew it had to be special for her.
“The difference in service is just amazing,”
Self said. “While other decorating companies
pushed us to sign a contract before seeing any real decorations, Greg invited us to
view ideas and had a series of table samples
waiting for us. Most companies won’t even
sit and consult with you until you sign on the
dotted line. Greg made us feel comfortable
and welcome. He worked with us to change
each table and edit the settings. It was so
incredibly beautiful.”
Ybarra said that’s how he works with most
Brides. He listens to their ideas and works
with them to make those ideas
exceed all expectations to create a beautiful wedding.
At the end of the day, Salinas
and Ybarra say they strike
bridal gold because they treat
one another with candor and
respect each other’s opinions.
“When we work, we are careful
not to criticize, but we do often
ask one another to take a step
back and look at a hairstyle
or look at a table presentation
and ask if it really reflects the
event as a whole,” Salinas said.
“We listen to each other, and
that way of communicating
works for us. Most of all, it translates into beautiful weddings.”

The proposal:
We had dinner out with his parents.
When dinner was over, five minutes after
Lee and I arrived at our home, the doorbell rang. It was his mom, dad, brother,
my mom, sister, her husband, my nephew and a few very close family friends.
He then gave an amazing speech and
got down on one knee. If anyone knows
us, we are big on family and I wouldn’t
have had it any other way.
Favorite detail:
Bride: The ultimate was the dance floor
decal of our names and decorative
peacocks. My sister Paula and good
friend Josh at Blue Shark Sign Company
surprised us. Also, the Groom's cake. Lee
is from Chicago and I surprised him with
a cake that had a fondant Chicago hot
dog on top. Groom: The decal on the
dance floor.
Favorite moment:
Bride: The two minutes we had to ourselves immediately after the ceremony.
It was such an amazing feeling to stop,
hold each other and reflect about what
just happened. Groom: Carrying my
Bride to the elevator through a crowd
comprised of all our guests.
Biggest challenge:
Bride: After the ceremony while taking
pictures, my flower girl Kaylee yells out “I
thought you were going to have a baby
or something!” Groom: The mad
scramble to NOT catch the
garter.
If you could do one
thing over:
Bride& Groom: Visit
with guests more. The
time went by so fast
and there was always
something going on.
Advice for future
Brides or Grooms:
Bride: Take that moment
immediately after to be
alone, just the two of you. The
emotions you feel need to
be enjoyed without interruption so that you may
remember that feeling
forever. Groom: In the
end, everything will be
okay. It is not going to
be perfect no matter how hard you try.
Prepare all you can, but
just go with the flow and
enjoy it.
What marriage means to you:
Bride: Lee has seen me at my
best and at my worst and he still loves
me. He accepts my son (his name is Lee
also, pure coincidence) as his own, and
supports us in every way possible. He
pushes us to our full potential and makes
me a better person.
Groom: Amy is everything I could ever
ask for. She is a great person, a wonderful mother and my best friend. I don’t
know how I made it a day before I knew
her and I could not imagine another
day without her.
How to make your
spouse happy:
Bride: Let each other
wind down after a long
day at work before
you start asking for the
“honey do’s.” Giving
each other about 30
minutes to decompress
allows for better communication and understanding. Groom: Listen to her
when she needs to be heard,
hug her when she needs to
be loved and run like heck
when she needs to be
alone.
What you look forward to the most:
Bride: Being an “official” family. I gained
a son, Lucas, and my
son Lee gained a father.
I look forward to watching them grow and sharing
special moments as a family.
Groom: Watching our children
grow up and working as a team, and
to make sure they have plenty of support to become great young men.

October 2012 – January 2013
Bride: Things will go wrong, but more
than likely, you will be the only one who
notices. Focus on the most important
thing, the fact that you are marrying
your best friend, and all else will fall
into place. Groom: It is worth all of the
frustration. The planning can be very difficult, but the end result is amazing.
theonebrideguide.com
Bride: Planning the last month without
my sister here. Trying to plan phone calls
around different time zones is hard!
Groom: Trying to do my part…. My work
schedule didn’t allow me to be as helpful as I would have liked, but luckily we
have a lot of family and great friends
that stepped up.

everything was going to come out as
planned. Groom: Getting Ashley to not
worry about whether or not everything
was going to come out as planned.
Funniest/most embarrassing moment:
Bride: Definitely cake time! So messy!
Groom: Being alone on the dance floor.
Neither of us can dance so everyone
watching us was a little embarrassing.
If you could do one thing over:
We worked together for a year before
we started dating.
The proposal:
Bride: The entire wedding was so
different from most weddings you go to.
From making our own decorations and
centerpieces to Christian making
the bar and the altar. It was a beautiful
wedding. Groom: It was so laid back.
Kids playing in the lawn, comfortable
clothes and the Coronita margaritas!
Biggest challenge:
Bride: The biggest challenge was the
morning of the wedding. I just worried if
Bride: Don't stress. Work on the wedding
plans together and don't let something
that didn't go right get to you. It's your
day! Groom: No one will notice if one or
two little details didn't come out just right
so don't let it ruin your day. Relax and
enjoy it because it goes by so fast!
How to make your spouse happy:
Bride: Cook and clean! Just kidding. Be
honest with him and love him unconditionally through good times and hard
times. Groom: Cook her food.
What you look forward to the most:
Other information for couples:
Bride: Cherish your wedding day. It's one
of the best moments in life.
{13}
Bride: Having someone there who loves
me go through all the exciting moments
in life with me. And starting our own family. Groom: Always having the one person
I can't live without by my side.

Advice for future Brides or Grooms:
•
Christian surprised me on a boat ride in
the harbor for our one year anniversary
and popped the question on the boat.
Favorite moment:
Bride: Definitely the ceremony. Walking
out of the house and onto the Great
Lawn and seeing all our friends and
family gathered around was great. And
then seeing Christian waiting for me and
how happy he looked was the best. The
ceremony went so smooth and perfect.
Groom: When we finally reached the
point of having everything ready. It was
such a relief. I remember a calm coming over me and I couldn't wait to see
Ashley walking down the aisle.

How we met:
Bride: Absolutely nothing. Groom: Hired
more people. We pulled it off but not
without lots of free help from family and
friends. I wish they could have just relaxed and enjoyed the weekend more.

Gerald is a well known magician, and
he decided to propose to Elena during
one of his magic shows… the whole
audience knew!
Favorite detail:
Bride: The Day of the Dead theme. I
lost my mother in 2008, and I wanted
to honor her and other loved ones who
are no longer with us. We had an altar
with pictures of loved ones that passed
away, along with Mexican candy. It was
the focal point of our wedding! There
was color everywhere. We had artists
from Corpus Christi construct calaveras
for us to put on all the tables. Groom:
I loved how our wedding was full of
custom artwork and pieces made by so
many different people and artists. It truly
was a magical time with loved ones
attending and those who could not attend nearby at the custom altar.
Favorite moment:
Funniest/most embarrassing moment:
Bride: Our pastor that was marrying us
was so nervous, even more so than us!
It helped me with my nerves!
Groom: When I was tossed into the air
by her family and then had my foot
dipped in cake.
If you could do one thing over:
Bride: I would do it all over again! I loved
every minute of it! Groom: Share another
first kiss as husband and wife.
Advice for future Brides or Grooms:
Bride & Groom: It really goes by so fast,
enjoy every minute of it!
What marriage means to you:
Bride: Making a life-long commitment to
the someone you want to spend the rest
of your life with. I got married because
I found the one that makes my soul
and my heart happy and complete.
He is my everything! Groom: Marriage
is the ultimate partnership that you can
make with the one person you wish to
spend the rest of your life with. It is not
just a piece of paper as most say, it is a
lifelong journey.
Bride: Walking down the aisle with my
dad, and seeing Gerald there waiting
for me. Groom: Seeing my future wife
coming down the aisle and then getting
to kiss her as my wife for the first time.
How to make your spouse happy:
Biggest challenge:
Bride: Every up and down, children, different milestones and growing old with
him. Groom: Sharing each and every
special moment together and making
amazing memories.
Bride: Organizing a wedding out of town
with a planner in a whole different city!
Groom: Keeping calm during the most
exiting time of my life.
Bride: Always listen, always be respectful, and always be supportive. Groom:
Respect each other on all levels.

Corpus Christi, TX
engaged for 12 months

How we met:
We met in downtown Corpus Christi
while out with friends and family.
The proposal:
Stanley Joe proposed at our home while
we were relaxing. I was very SURPRISED
and it was very special, because everyday after that when relaxing in our living
room, we remember that special moment.
About the jewelry:
Stanley Joe surprised me the night before
the wedding by having my Maid of Honor
place his wedding gift to me on my night
stand. It was a pair of diamond earrings.
I also wore a gold bracelet that has been
passed down in my family, and a pearl
bracelet from my parents.
Favorite detail:
Bride: The décor, special lighting with
personalized "P", and the ice sculpture
that served our signature drink.
Groom: The location. The event was
both inside and outside.
Favorite moment:
Bride: The special time I had
with my dad before he
walked me down the
aisle. It is a conversation and moment that
I will never forget.
Groom: Getting
together with all my
family and friends.
If you could do one thing over:
Bride: I loved our wedding, I honestly
would not do anything different!
Groom: Enjoy the food. The day is so busy
that you don’t get to relax and eat.
Bride: I married Stanley Joe because I
genuinely love him and he is my favorite
person to be around. Stanley Joe can
make me smile just by walking in the
room. I married my husband because he
loves me as much as I love him. Groom:
Marriage is forever, or at least it should
be. Take your time and pick the right
one. For me, Lauren was the right one.
How to make your spouse happy:
Bride: Cook him dinner! Which is not
something that I do well, but I try.
Groom: Take her out every now and then.
What you look forward to the most:
Bride: I look forward to growing as a
couple, sharing experiences, memories,
and eventually starting a family.
Other information for couples:
Bride: When planning your wedding,
surround yourselves with people that are
truly happy for you and want to see you
happy. Marry someone that lights up your
world and loves you in every situation.
October 2012 – January 2013
Bride & Groom: The Bride's brother's toast.
What marriage means to you:
•
Funniest/most embarrassing moment:
Bride: Take your time planning your
wedding and get your Groom's opinion. You would be surprised on his input!
Most importantly, have a blast in every
moment (even the stressful ones). This is
your wedding day. Plan it so that it's an
expression of you as a couple.
Groom: Let your future wife plan it.
theonebrideguide.com
Biggest challenge:
Bride: I forgot my veil…
and realized it an hour
before the wedding!
Groom: My button on my
suit came off five minutes before
our wedding.

The walkway of the Georgialike plantation curves around
terracotta planters full of blossoming beach flora and potted
palms. Native, flowering Oleander bushes border the building,
while a few feet away, rippling
waves gently lap the shore and
the wooden pillars of a long pier.
The air smells like the perfect
combination of the sea and sunscreen: calm, easy relaxation.
The owners of Mansion by The
Sea – who have asked to remain
anonymous – built the home five
years ago. The home sits in the
center of Redfish Bay, thought
to be the premiere Redfish destination in the country. Fears
by locals that boat propellers
would destroy the ecosystem of
the calm waters scrapped plans
for a sail-and-dock eatery, so a
smaller restaurant opened instead. After a few years, dreams
of a bed and breakfast inspired
the owners to close the restaurant and repurpose the estate.
The idea of a grand wedding
venue was born.
“Starting out, I really had no
experience doing this whatsoever,” the owner says with a
nervous laugh. “I just knew that
we had something here, and
that a wedding would be very
beautiful here. When I started,
I told myself that if I had one
wedding a month I would be
very happy.”

361, the Mansion By The Sea
three-story wedding venue sits
almost unnoticed. Going between Port Aransas and Aransas Pass, the causeway is a
means to an end: beachgoers
and fishermen have their sights
set on the ferry. For homebound
vacationers: the stretch of road
is the last that sees the water
on both sides. But hidden from
view is possibly the best wedding venue on the Gulf Coast,
a gorgeous pearl nestled in the
oyster of South Texas beaches,
surfing, fishing, sailing and pure

With little traditional advertising,
or experience hosting weddings;
through The One, a web presence and word of mouth only,
Mansion By The Sea is nearly
booked for the remainder of this
year. The summer months of 2013
are already reserved and paid.
Touring the grounds of Mansion
By The Sea, it’s easy to understand why.
The first floor expansive deck
features a stage and built in
dining tables. Lighted pillars at
each table create ambiance.
The railings of the deck overlook the shallow waters of the
bay. The water is crystal clear.
Not a normal sight in South

proximity to other bays and the

The views are astounding. The
privacy is incredible. And the
hosts, the owners who live on the
property’s third floor, are friendly
and “very invisible” during weddings, they say.
“We want our guests and Brides
to be comfortable. This is our
home, first and foremost, so we
want them to feel as comfortable as we do,” the owner said.
“We pride ourselves on discretion
and privacy and offering a beautiful, well-maintained space for a
Bride’s special day. We hope we
offer everything she would need
to make it perfect.”
Perfection achieved.

The Great Room boasts sweeping
views of the bay through fourteenfoot windows. The view of a lighthouse miles away exudes charm.
Along the back wall of the room
is a gourmet kitchen with double
ovens, just the right space for an
intimate wedding party dinner or
family breakfast the morning after.
If guests want silence and privacy, a cement wall built through
the center of the venue make
it impossible for the back of the
venue, where the hotel suites
are located, to hear what is
happening on the party side.
October 2012 – January 2013
Off the beach, a staircase leads
up to a second floor terrace with
a fountain for cocktails. Through
a door sit more beautiful surprises: The Great Room, a gourmet
kitchen and private hotel suites.
Logistically, garage doors on
the first floor at the back of the
venue make it easy for caterers
to load in and load out. Barbecue smokers, warming ovens
and coolers make any wedding
feast possible. Concert grade
speakers hang suspended from
the third floor of the building. The
music playing can be heard from
both floors to the pier across the
water with clarity and without
harshness or blaring distortion.
The same music can be pumped
through the guest rooms.
•
On the beach, a room of the
house serves as a bar, complete
with a pass through counter and
barbecue grill. Coolers keep
champagne and lemonade
chilled here as well.
What makes the venue so unique
and unparalleled on the Gulf
Coast is the thoughtful design of
the property. Guests can attend
a wedding and proceed to the
reception without getting lost or
hungry because they stay in the
same location. On that same
note, the venue offers multiple
spaces for different parts of a
wedding, all feeling different and
special: the wedding space, the
cocktail hour space, the dinner
space and the dancing space.

private beach. For a step beyond
a beach wedding, a small platform rises off the sand and hovers above the water. A recent

The first floor also features an indoor space with a wall of glass
garage doors that open to the
deck. Inside offers another bar
with coolers, a stage, and an
iPad jukebox with more than
30,000 songs and an LED light

deck and the pier, the venue
can be pink, purple, blue, green,
gold… whatever the Bride wishes.

Our Story:
Apo and I met in 2008 briefly in Istanbul and
became friends. While I lived in the U.S. and he
lived in Turkey and then in Australia, we kept
in touch. We knew we had to see each other
again before we could really know if there was
anything there between us so we decided to
meet again in Istanbul in December 2009. After
our time in Turkey, he went back to Australia
and I went back to Chicago. We worked on
trying to get a visa for Apo to come to the U.S.
and it came through a year later. He came
to Chicago in December of 2010 and we’ve
been together ever since.

McAllen, TX:
Our favorite detail to our wedding in Texas
was our surprise dance. We practiced a
choreographed paso doble to the song
“Malaguena Salerosa” by Del Castillo for
about 10 to 11 weeks before the wedding.
Everyone roared with excitement.
The performances were another favorite.
I wanted a performance from a Mexican
Ballet Folklorico group. Then when I started
planning my wedding to a Turkish man,
I decided that I still wanted that dream,
but now I also wanted a performance
from a Turkish Folkloric group. The Mexican
Folklorico group was a dance troupe from
the University of Texas Pan-American and
the Turkish group was the American Turkish
Association “ATA” Folk Dance Group from
Houston.
In Texas we had a traditional Turkish
meal for the main course. Along with
the wedding cake, we had traditional
Mexican wedding cookies and my
husband’s favorite Turkish desert, kunefe.
Also, along with Tejano and pop music

I got married because I wanted to make
a spiritual commitment to Apo. I wanted
my family and friends to witness that I was
committing my life and love to Apo in front
of God. We may not have been in a church
or any other religious building when we got
married but it didn’t matter. We made our
marriage promises to God and I know God
was there. Apo says, “I got married because
I found my destiny, the girl I’m supposed to
be with.”
October 2012 – January 2013
The night before the wedding, there is a
traditional “Henna Night” for the women
and Bride. I wore the traditional red and
elaborate clothing for the henna night. It
In Turkey, one of our favorite details was
showing the video of our Texas ceremony for
the guests. It was important to us that they
get a small feeling of Apo getting married
in Texas. In addition, I wanted to “walk in” to
mariachis like at the weddings I’m used to,
so they played mariachis playing “Jalisco”
over the speakers with music from my iPod.
Also, something that was important to me
was a long piece of Spanish lace I bought
many years before. In 2008, my mother and I
traveled the south of Spain and I purchased
a wedding “mantilla” for my wedding one
day. Going to Turkey, I didn’t know I was going
to use it but I got my chance. Traditionally,
the Groom goes to the house of the Bride
and picks her up to take her to the wedding
ceremony. At that time, the Bride is supposed
to cover her head and face with the same
red veil used the night before from the henna
night. I didn’t know I was supposed to do that
until they started pulling the veil out to put it
on me. I told Apo I wanted to use my Spanish
veil and it looked beautiful.
•
Another challenge about having a wedding in
Turkey while living in the U.S. was doing some of
the preparation for the wedding. Apo’s family
and friends made it easier by handling most
of the wedding plans. The preparation that
I had to make was done in Turkey, choosing
the Henna Night outfit and getting my hair
and makeup the way I wanted. When I was
taken to the salon Apo and his sister chose, it
was difficult to talk with the ladies that worked
there after Apo left. Thankfully, I had a good
friend of mine from Istanbul there with me.
Apparently my hair style and makeup choice
was too subdued for their tastes. They kept
wanting to make my hair bigger and wanting
to put glitter in my hair. I had to tell them I didn’t
want all that and just wanted a red rose that I
had brought with me in my hair. Everyone was
very nice and passed no judgment with the
choices I made for myself.
started with the
women gathering
to sing and dance.
After a while, Apo
came
back
to
the house and we
entered the living room
together. I held his arm
and I had a red veil over my
head and face. The lights in the room were
off and there were candles. They sat us in
the middle while everyone walked around
us singing and holding candles. Traditionally,
an unmarried friend is to put a small amount
of henna on the palm of my right hand and
I am to close my hand and keep it like that
until the next morning. Thankfully, one of my
female, single, Turkish friends flew in from
Istanbul to be at the wedding and put the
henna in my hand. One of Apo’s cousins
smeared henna on one side of his right hand.
They each put a thin red glove around the
hand with the henna. We were supposed to
leave it like that until the next day.
theonebrideguide.com
For the wedding in Turkey, the biggest
challenge for me was being able to control
the few things that were important to me
for the celebration. His family was planning
the wedding so I left the decisions to them.
In addition, weddings are seen differently in
Turkey. The wedding is seen as just a ceremony
that needs to be done in order to start living
your life as a married couple. Engagements
don’t last more than a few months and
weddings and wedding celebrations happen
almost every day of the week.
for dancing, we had traditional Turkish
and Kurdish music for the guests to dance
to. We decided we wanted more Turkish
people to come as guests to our wedding
so we invited the Turkish Folk Group to stay
and enjoy the wedding, but we also came
in contact with the small, yet thriving Turkish
community in McAllen. So we invited
them, all of them, to our wedding. Some
of them I had not even met before but
they were all welcomed. Now that we are
living in McAllen, we have good friends
who were at our wedding before we
even knew them. We were able to
share our special moment with
them before they became our
good friends and we appreciate
them for welcoming
Apo and me
into their
community.

Key items for every room in your home!
Note from The One:
Registering for wedding gifts is a
necessary evil in wedding planning,
but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare.
Keep a good attitude, be patient,
and make sure to pick items you can
live with for a long while. And guys,
don’t ask WHY you need four different types of spoons. You never
know when a spoon shortage is going
to happen! But seriously, registering is a good thing. Your friends and
family are provided with a list of gift
items you actually want, instead of
playing the guessing game about what
in the world you might need for your
new kitchen. Register for more than
you think you’ll need and make sure
you have lots of affordable items for
all ranges of income levels. Keep this
list handy while you are shopping and
don’t get overwhelmed. Remember,
you can always return things if you
change your mind!

The One Show Ad Here
by Aubrey Winston
“It all started
when two people
fell in love."
This is a well-known saying but I think about
it in a different way. When a couple comes
in to see me about having a reception, I
know they’re in the process of continuing
the love with their wedding vendors. They
are searching to fall in love with those
professionals that will make their wedding
what they’ve always dreamed of. Searching for florists, decorators, and bakers is a
time consuming and information loaded
process but it’s so rewarding when you find
your perfect match in a vendor.
I love that moment when I connect with a
Bride and know that planning her wedding
will be an enjoyable time for both of us.
Knowing that she trusts me to do the job that
I love is a dream come true to any vendor.
theonebrideguide.com
Being at a venue, I work with an assortment
of wedding professionals each week. Any
one of them will tell you that there are so
many sweet, lovely, and easygoing clients
but they will also tell you that there are a
few rough ones. Each vendor is searching for
trust and belief in their work from every person they work with. It’s difficult to desire to
give your all to a Bride when nothing makes
her happy. If a client comes to me requesting extreme discounts or special treatment
from the beginning, I know that they will continue to push the limit until the end.
•
October 2012 – January 2013
My advice to each Bride, Groom, mother of
the Bride, and family member is to trust that
you’ve chosen the right person for each
job. You did your research and booked
who you thought was best. Don’t ask that
each vendor overly discount things for you.
Value them and their product or service
as they are professionals and will produce
great things for you.
{36}
Secondly, know that each vendor is working with many other Brides at the same time
as you. We talk to 20+ people a day and
have so much information flowing through
our heads. Don’t be offended if we don’t
immediately recognize you by only your first
name when you call. We will get there, you
just have to give us a little reminder and we
will be completely focused on you.
We know that you have tons of ideas for
your wedding and have pictured it in your
head for years. Many Brides these days are
really big into the new and unique ideas of
Pinterest and Etsy. We as vendors are also
into these new ideas. Many decorators and
bakers are into Pinterest while caterers are
researching what innovative food is exciting
and different to serve at weddings. Don’t
be afraid to ask us what we think. We see
weddings every week and have so many
fresh ideas we could show you. I frequently ask that Brides talk to their vendors and
combine the ideas they have from magazines and online with their vendor’s years
of experience and novel ideas from industry trade shows.
As you plan your wedding, consider my advice when working
with your chosen vendors. We are so happy
to be part of your big day. We will strive to
make it as perfect for you as we can and we
thank you for believing in us and trusting us to
do what we do best.

T
he Holidays can be a fun, but sometimes
stressful time of year, especially if you are
planning a wedding. There are lots of parties, lots
of candy, and lots and lots of food.
What isn’t so fun is the body fat we can gain during the holidays. Usually, little thought is given
to the repercussions of “enjoying” ourselves during the holidays until the New Year rolls around.
By that point the damage is done. But it doesn’t
have to be that way.
Below are a few tips to keep you from sabotaging
the hard work you have put in this year to keep
you lean, strong, and fit.

October 2012 – January 2013
Eat More Turkey
Turkey is made up of mostly protein. Protein is the
sole macronutrient responsible for building and
repairing your body’s tissue stores (fat and carbs
simply provide energy). More specifically, regular
protein intake is vital in accelerating the repair of
muscle damage from high-intensity activities like
strength training and cardio interval training. In
addition, adequate protein intake every two to four
hours is essential in maintaining your current levels
of lean muscle mass. This is important because the
more muscle you have, the larger your metabolic
engine, thus the more calories (and fat) you burn
on a daily basis since muscle tissue requires a lot of
energy to sustain itself. Protein is also the least likely macronutrient to be stored as body fat and the
mere act of digesting protein requires more than
double the energy to digest than carbohydrates and
dietary fats. Other sources of protein include fish,
chicken, pork, and lean cuts of meat.
Pass On the Casseroles
Casseroles can derail any fit person's nutrition
strategy. Casseroles get their rich flavors from
fat-laden creams and butters which contain large
amounts of calories from fats. Some casseroles will
contain healthy vegetables, but the amount of fat
per serving usually out “weighs” the benefits.
{38}
Limit Your Candy and Desserts
Desserts and candy are a tradition in most households during the holidays but if you want to keep
the figure you have worked so hard for the past few
months, you will want to skip the high sugar and
potentially high fat savory desserts. If you can skip
one type of dessert, skip the ones with crusts. Crusts
add fat and sometimes trans-fats to an already
sugar-laden treat. Plus, portion control usually goes
out the window with desserts. Upon finishing the
meal, throw the dessert out. If it is in the house,
you or someone else will eventually eat it.
Consume Less Spirits
Alcoholic beverages can negatively impact anyone’s
goals to a lean, trim body. Alcohol adds empty
calories to your nutrition. These are calories that
don’t make you full like food can but they are calories none the less. Also, when drinking alcohol you
may not make the same food choices as when you
are not drinking which can negatively impact your
goals to stay lean over the holiday season.
Create a Quick Workout Anywhere
Try to get a good workout in before your holiday
feast. If you don’t have time for a workout and still
need to burn some calories fast try 60-90 seconds
of air-squats before your holiday meal and 60-90
seconds of air-squats 90-minutes after your meal.
In Tim Ferris’s book The 4-Hour Body he explains
how just 280 seconds of intense exercise can be
almost as effective at disrupting your metabolism
as 6 hours of long, slow, boring cardio. Who has
6 hours a day for cardio? In less than 5 minutes of
movement you can deplete muscle glycogen stores
in your muscle tissue so your body can use your
holiday dinner as fuel instead of storing it as fat.
An idea might be to excuse yourself just before
dinner at your future in-laws house, go to the restroom and do 60-90 seconds of air-squats. (You
can stop laughing now. Consider it a challenge.)
Be sure not to make any groaning or grunting
noises while doing your squats. You don’t need
that kind of attention from your future family.
90-seconds may not sound like that long of a
time, but once you get to 45-seconds your legs
are going to be feeling it.
A better idea may be to get the whole family
involved. Before the bird and trimmings are served,
get everyone around the table or in an open room
and perform 60-90 seconds of air-squats.
Be sure to designate a time keeper. Air-squats
could become a fun new family tradition. Make
sure everyone is healthy enough to participate.
Follow up with another round of air-squats about
90-minutes after you put your fork down. The
additional 90-seconds will remove the sugar that
is in your blood from your meal and help push it
into your muscles to use as fuel.
My hope is that these tips will help you keep
your body lean during the holidays. If your body
isn’t as lean as you would like, try implementing
these tips to help you get started.

Another example would
be a wedding
with an outdoor
reception. By
up-lighting pillars or
trees in green, blue and
purple, you set the mood for
the perfect cocktail hour as the sun
sets. Just make sure your bartender
has plenty of margarita mix and the
DJ has plenty of Jimmy Buffet on hand!
here is nothing I love more than to
meet with clients to discuss their
special event. Since this article is for
The One Bride Guide, I'll focus on
wedding details.
When I meet with a Bride, I don't
limit our discussions to our services and what I can offer them...
I'm interested in the whole
enchilada! The wedding theme?
Is it a simple yet delicate theme
with soft white lights or a beach
wedding with loud peacock colors? The cake? Who's making it and
what color and design? The florals?
Bright florals with feathers or simple
white lilies? The linens? Solid white? Two
tone? You get the point.
These are just a few things I need to take
into consideration when planning an
event, and I'll tell you why. All this information helps me visualize the event and
how it will look (at least in my mind).

The client and I both have to paint each
other a visual picture of what we see
the reception looking like. First, we start
with a blank canvas which is the "hall" or
"venue." Now, I will tell you... I've worked
at some halls that should have been
condemned in the 1980's, but sometimes
you just have to make do! With the proper
AMBIENT lighting, you can turn an eyesore
of a banquet hall into a PRINCESS PALACE
with some bright purple and blue light
illuminating the walls.

If a Bride decides she wants red roses as
her florals and has black and red linens,
with red roses all over her cake, I am able
to match that by projecting images of
red roses EVERYWHERE using the intelligent
lighting that my company utilizes. And
when I say EVERYWHERE, I mean it. All over
the walls, on the dance floor, you name
it. The images of the roses turn round and
round ever so slowly. When the guests
arrive, I see them look around the room
in amazement, wondering where those
images of roses are coming from. It really
adds to the overall theme and really sets
the mood for the evening. A decent production or lighting company will be able
to do this effortlessly, not just with roses but
with anything you can imagine.
Which brings me to my main point. More
often than not, I will have to explain the
difference between AMBIENT lighting and DISCO lighting to my clients.
AMBIENT lighting is just that. It creates
a certain ambience to a room, hall or
outdoor venue. It sets a certain mood
that overtakes a room. Imagine walking
into a reception hall... the entire room is
illuminated blue with violet accents. Dinner is being served while you can hear
the DJ playing some smooth jazz (most
likely Diana Krall) in the background.
This is a classic example of how lighting
can set the mood of a room. We can
take the same room and brighten it up
with greens and yellows for a spectacular background while the toasts to the
Bride and Groom are being made... and
immediately change everything to red
while the Bride & Groom have their first
dance to the song "Lady in Red"...
With the production of high power/low
consumption LED light fixtures, even those
of you who want to "do-it-yourself" will have
a fun time creating the perfect ambience
for your event. Not only are these fixtures
used for halls, AMBIENT lights are being
used to highlight trees, buildings, signs,
statues & other indoor and outdoor fixtures
due to it's popularity and affordability.
Face it, we have all been to enough
lack-luster weddings where the only lighting in the place are the florescent fixtures
that make everyone look yellow. These
days, with the help of television shows like
"My Fair Wedding" and "My Sweet 16," a
Bride-to-be can get an idea of the AMBIENT lighting that's available to her. It not
only creates a pleasant atmosphere, but
it also looks great in photos! When you
create an astounding atmosphere with
the right light, look, and color, your guests
will compare your wedding to every
other wedding they attend and put you
at the top! Just don't look puzzled if they
ask you to get married again!
