YOU are the American Red Cross
This has been an extremely busy year for our Chapter, with a higher than average number of fires destroying homes and displacing families. Also, it has demonstrated that we cannot tell exactly when and where a major disaster or string of disasters may occur. Between September 21 and October 5, 2008, an apartment house fire and 5 house fires occurred in San Patricio County, with 61 people assisted at a cost of over $8,000. And in April, 2009, Lagarto in Live Oak County was hit by fires, impacting 29 families with 55 individuals and a cost of over $11,000. This makes clear why it is vital to have trained volunteers in each of the 12 counties in our chapter in order to provide assistance to those families displaced. It allows more timely response when a family has been devastated. And, it is important that disaster response have some fund-raising support from our outlying counties. That will sustain our ability to respond even in the difficult economic times we are now experiencing. Service to our Armed Forces has continued to connect families with the service members assigned out of the area, providing notification and communication when an emergency occurs. We have had a case where Red Cross responded to a fire displacing a family with the father serving in Iraq and then notifying the service member, who was then quickly returned home to help his family. Education is another high priority regardless of where a family resides. Red Cross is reaching out to teach training classes, such as CPR and babysitting, and also will offer Masters of Disaster classes for students and teachers throughout our area’s school systems. The latter is intended to prepare teachers to teach how and why disasters occur, to help students and families know how to prepare for disaster, and to provide instruction on how to stay safe and help others during and after a disaster. To better prepare across our Chapter’s area and thanks to a generous grant from Wal-Mart, we have recently placed two large trailers with cots, blankets and other items in Kingsville and Refugio, to permit a faster response to outlying areas when needed. We have also improved a communications trailer with both ham radio and satellite communication capability thanks to a CBCF grant so that it can be used to restore communications within an area hit by a disaster. This is essential when distributing food, water, and supplies to an affected area. Our volunteers are the backbone of the Red Cross and their capability to respond with adequate resources is made possible by our donors. Both are essential to each of our counties, communities and families when affected by both large and small disasters. Assistance in identifying the volunteer and telling the Red Cross story will be appreciated. Quentin Masters Executive Director Thank you. In the year 2000, when my friend and Red Cross Board Member, Mary Anne Rhodes said, “Why don’t we take some Red Cross Disaster Training courses?” neither one of us imagined what was ahead. We started as DAT Team members responding to residence fires. Our first response included a boa constrictor. We went from there to the never-ending floods of 2001. September 11 shocked the world and the Red Cross responded. There was more flooding in 2002 and a deadly tornado. Our area has had tropical storms, hurricane warnings and hurricane near misses. Katrina, Rita and Wilma threatened in 2005, Ike in 2008. And, the residence fires continued. Sometimes we were there in person; sometimes we held supporting roles, but always as members of the American Red Cross. It has been a great privilege to serve as the Board Chairman of your American Red Cross. Mary Anne and I did our small parts, but it is in the combining of many parts that make the American Red Cross a great organization. Whether your part is fundraising, teaching Health and Safety classes, responding to disasters, connecting military members to their families or the myriad other activities required to support our Mission, YOU are the American Red Cross. Thank you to our wonderful staff, devoted volunteers and generous donors. Carroll P.
