Philadelphia,PA(September8,2016)–BohlinCywinskiJacksonannouncestheopeningofNewCollegeHouse,
theUniversityofPennsylvania’sfirstpurpose-builtcollegehouseinPenn’scollegehousesystemdesignedtobring
togetherundergraduates,faculty,staffandgraduatestudentsinasharedcommunity.Pennwillofficiallycelebrate
theopeningofNewCollegeHousewitharibboncuttingceremonyonSeptember13.
Designedtoenrichtheacademiclifeofitsstudentsandembodythevibrancyofitsurbansetting,NewCollege
Houseispoisedtoenliventhecampusexperienceforthe21stcenturyandbeyond.Thefirstresidentsinthe
198,000-square-footbuildingmovedinonAugust24.
BoundedbyWoodlandWalkand34thandChestnutstreets,NewCollegeHouseframesacriticalgatewayto
campus.Thedesignpreservesvitalopenspaceandwelcomesvisitorstothecampusalongthe125Yearsof
WomenatPennwalkwithagenerousliftedlawn.Securedbyatall,transparentgatewaypavilion,theentrance
sequenceintotheNewCollegeHousepassesthroughagardencourtyard,whichisencircledonthreesidesbythe
building.Thefourthsideconnectsvisuallywiththetopoftheslopinglawn,doublingasthediningcafe’sgreenroof
and,foritsfullextent,asagrandpublicopenspacefortheentirecampus.
Insidetheseven-storybuildingisanarrayofinterconnectedrooms,allwithdistinctspatialqualitiesand
characteristicsthatfosterdiversesocialandlearningactivities.Suite-styleresidencesaccommodate350students,
alongwithlivingspacesforfaculty,graduatestudentsandfellows,housedeansandresidentialadvisors.In
additiontosharedcommonareas,NewCollegeHousehasdedicatedspacesformusic,amediacenter,seminar
rooms,andadministrativeoffices.
“Inthiscityofneighborhoods,wesoughttoembracethemanyscalesofcommunitythatdefinethecollegiate
experienceuniquetoPenn,”saysFrankGrauman,designprincipalfromBohlinCywinskiJackson’sPhiladelphia
office.“TheNewCollegeHouseis,therefore,bothinvitingandsecure,openandprivate,embodyingthecomfort
ofhome,andthepowertoformacampusgatewayworthyofthisplace.”
Thebuilding’sfaçadeconsistsofbrickandlimestone,whichispunctuatedbyverticalglasstowersrevealing
interiorcirculationandloungespaceswithviewsofPenn’ssurroundingcampuscommunityandCenterCity.The
house’sdesignwithmaterialsandoperationsistargetingaLEEDcertificationofSilverorgreater.
“Thebuildingdelightsonsomanylevels—itsmarvelousintegrationofpublicandprivateopenspace,its
sophisticatedapproachtofosteringcommunitiesatmultiplelevels,itsintegrationwiththeurbanfabric,itsdeft
useofmaterials,itscraftsmanship,and,inparticular,itsassuredmanipulationofscale,whichbreaksdownwhatis
actuallyanenormousbuildingintomultipleintegratedpartsathumanscale,”describesDavidHollenberg,
UniversityArchitect.“TheNewCollegeHousewill,webelieve,instantlybecomeanintegralpartofthelandscape
ofresidentiallivingatPenn.”
