November-December 2008 - Metro Washington Chapter of the Penn
President’s Letter
Dear Chapter members,
As we head into late fall, our members and friends have enjoyed
watching our Nittany Lion football team at our three viewing sites.
Some lucky chapter members won pairs of tickets to the sold-out
Michigan game by purchasing raffle tickets sold at all three sites and
online. The raffles were held to raise money for the chapter
scholarship fund, which benefits Penn State students from the Metro
DC area. Our Michigan ticket raffle sales raised almost $2,300 for the
scholarship fund.
Our chapter members generously donate funds each year to help us continue this program.
Whether it is through a raffle for football tickets, or adding a small amount to the purchase
of an event ticket or membership renewal, every donation allows us to continue our efforts
to provide assistance to outstanding students from our area. Thank you for your ongoing
contributions to this important program.
It’s hard to believe the year has flown by so quickly, but as we head into November and
December, it’s time to renew your membership. You can renew online at any time via our
secure website; if you prefer to renew by mail, look for the membership renewal
information in your mailbox soon.
Finally, I’d like to thank Brian Pacheco, board member and Sports Chair, for his service to
the chapter. Brian has accepted a position in New York City and is moving on to new
adventures. We will miss his quiet dedication to our sports teams and the chapter as a whole.
His shoes will be hard to fill.
As always, we welcome your feedback. Drop me a note anytime at
[email protected].
For the Glory,
Judy Engle ‘86
Community Service

Road, NE in Washington, DC. Free parking is available at the facility or there is a free shuttle from the Fort Totten metro stop. For more information visit www.foodandfriends.org,

Chapter Spotlight
Tony and Catie Shivers
The Chapter Board strives to provide
chapter members with a wide variety
of social, cultural and community
service events. These functions are
great opportunities to meet Penn
State Alums – so join us at an upcoming event! You can make lifelong connections – as seen in the
story of Tony and Catie Shivers.
Tony served the Chapter as both a
Board member and our Volleyball
Coach. Catie has been a member of
our alumni sports teams. Tony explains: “I moved here immediately
after graduation. Prior to getting involved in the DC alumni chapter I did
not know too many Penn
State alumni in the area. I
hoped that by getting involved in chapter activities
I would expand my
N O V E M B E R / DE C E M B E R 20 0 8
network of friends as well as
professional contacts. I
started to play softball and
flag football in the alumni
sports leagues.
In fact, I
met my wife, Catie, at a
chapter flag football game
several years ago. Catie was
friends with another Penn
State alum I met through the
chapter several weeks earlier. She had recently moved
to the DC area and did not know
many people in the area let alone
any Penn Staters. Catie and I often
ran into each other at chapter outings
and became close friends.
Our
friendship blossomed into a wonderful relationship. We got married in
July 2006 and have a newborn son
named Bennett Paul. I am blessed to
have found my wife and excited she
shares my passion for the University. I hope our son decides to pursue his collegiate career at Penn
State to carry on our legacy. “
