Attend a Workforce Investment Act orientation at your local America’s Job Center of California. Call 325-4473, 336-6700 or 800-3346670 for more information. 2 Once you attend an orientation, you will be given an appointment with an intake counselor who will assess whether or not you qualify for free training. They may ask you to provide proof of residence in Kern County, income verification for the last 6 months, Social Security card, picture identification, birth certificate, and any other document they ask you to bring. 3. A JCE staff member will assess you for suitability to the program you desire to attend. They may also ask you to attend a series of workshops to ensure that you can be dependable, arrive on time, be dressed appropriately, and be ready to learn and work. 4. If you are selected for the program, you may be drug tested to ensure that you are drug-free and ready to work. 6. Finally, you will be given a referral to the Bakersfield Adult School or Career Resource Department and training will begin! COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ESL CITIZENSHIP/PREPARATION — Will assist students in acquiring English Language skills as well as the knowledge and understanding of the principles and form of government, the Constitution, the history, the culture, the institutions and the geography of the United States. Students will learn interviewing skills in preparation for the INS oral interview. ESL BEGINNING — This course is for students who cannot read or write in either their native language or in English. ESL BEGINNING LOW — This course is for students who are literate in their native language, but speak, read, write and understand little or no English. ESL BEGINNING HIGH — This course is designed for students who have limited abilities to communicate their needs by using simple phrases and sentences. ESL INTERMEDIATE LOW — This course is designed to strengthen communication skills for work or social settings, and to enable students to comfortably participate in community activities. ESL INTERMEDIATE HIGH — Designed to teach students to follow written directions, comprehend conversations containing unfamiliar vocabulary, participate in face-to-face conversations, and make themselves understood. ESL ADVANCED LOW/SPEAKING — This course is designed to build upon the foundation of basic oral skills & developing oral skills that are more sophisticated. ESL MUTLI-LEVEL LOW — This is a multi-level course designed for ESL students in Beginning Literacy, Beginning Low, and Beginning High levels. The purpose is to introduce English language literacy skills and language learning strategies within the context of broad life skills and parenting/tutoring strategies. ESL ADVANCED LOW LISTENING/SPEAKING — This course is designed to provide students with added experience in development of listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills. Pronunciation and speaking units are tied to life skills topics such as: health, food, community, work, leisure, etc. ESL ADVANCED LOW/READING — This course will facilitate students being able to read and respond to literature, choose & respond to personal reading material comparable in scope and difficulty to materials chosen by their English speaking peers. ESL INTERMEDIATE HIGH/SPEAKING — This course is designed for students who wish to improve their oral skills through intensive, focused lessons and can commit to excellent class attendance. ESL INTERMEDIATE HIGH/READING — Students in this course will read & respond to literature, with teacher guidance, use a range of strategies to build vocabulary, extract information from grade level texts. ESL ADVANCED LOW/NARRATIVE WRITING LEVEL 5 — This course is designed to provide students with skills in writing academic paragraphs that will prepare them to study for their GED or High School Diploma. In addition, they will learn to write letters that will help them in their family and work lives. ESL ADVANCED HIGH/ESSAY WRITING LEVEL 6 — This course is designed for the academically focused students who need their GED, High School Diploma, or more writing experience before they enter college. It is designed for students who are proficient in the skills addressed in the narrative writing class. Students will meet with a counselor or academic advisor to create an educational plan to attain their goal of graduation. 1. At age 18, a student can earn credit by taking classes which are offered either day or night. 2. At age 19, a student can be enrolled in an Independent Study program. Independent Study is designed for those who are unable to enroll in classes due to employment, health problems, or family obligations. The course includes instruction in food production, baking, and garde manager; food safety; nutrition; dining room service and special event planning; career awareness and employability skills; use and care of equipment; workplace safety; menu planning; storeroom/inventory procedures; POS system; facility maintenance; and food service management. HEALTH CARE SUPPORT OCCUPATIONS — This course is designed for students to address the knowledge and skills required for employment in health care occupations. The course will meet necessary proficiencies to work safely and competently within direct patient contact occupations. These are primarily contained in the classroom and learning laboratories. The course utilizes classroom instruction and community-based learning experiences for students to acquire job-entry occupation skills in our health care delivery system. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST — This course helps students understand technical concepts underlying current and future developments in the information technology field. There will be a special emphasis on networks (wired and wireless) and telecommunications. Students will gain some hands on exposure to powerful, high-level tools for making computer networks, phones and audio visual systems perform. Information Technology Specialist (ITS) is an academic discipline that continues to evolve as computers and communication technology change. Students will learn various techniques involving computer networking, audio/visual systems, telecommunications, conflict management, project management and blueprint/CAD review and design. MEDICAL ASSISTANT — Adult students learn medical law, ethics, medical terminology, sterilization and now to assist with physical exams and office surgeries. Trainees practice skills to perform an electrocardiogram, take vital signs, and learn CPR, venipuncture, drug calculations and medication administration as well as communication and job development skills. Students benefit from a balanced blend of classroom and supervised clinical site training. MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING (Computerized) — This course offers the opportunity to learn skills in bookkeeping and office procedures, billing and collecting, coding of diagnoses and procedures, computerized electronic claim processing, scheduling computerized appointments, tracing delinquent claims, introduction to hospital billing, health insurance plans, along with medical terminology. MEDICAL MATH — Students will learn math concepts for vocational nurse preparation or any other health career programs. This includes basic math concepts such as roman numerals, fractions, decimals, percentages, rations and proportions. It is based on the dimensional analysis system, which focuses on the equivalents for metric, apothecary, and household weight and volume. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY — This 54 hour course is an introduction to the language of medicine and is applicable to all health career programs. Basic medical word roots, combining forms, prefixed, suffixed, abbreviations and pronunciation are covered. NURSE ASSISTANT — Students benefit from a balanced blend of classroom and supervised clinical site training at local convalescent homes and hospitals. Students learn basic patient care skills, vital signs, universal precautions, lifting and moving techniques, as well as, proper body mechanics and safety. Each student will complete CPR and first aid training and will learn medical ethics, confidentiality, patient rights, and medical and surgical asepsis patient care procedures. All trainees receive “Skills for Success” instruction throughout the training period to enhance employment potential. Upon successful completion, the graduate may apply for state licensure and take the California State Exam. PSYCHOLOGY FOR THE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL — This course is designed as an introduction into the scientific study of behavior, emphasizing perceptions, thinking, motivation, emotion, intelligence and learning. This course is designed to contribute to the general education of all students and provide a basis for further study in the field of psychology. This is a prerequisite course for vocational nurse program. VOCATIONAL NURSE — Adult students who are current CNAs or CMAs and who have completed the VN prerequisites may apply for this program. Students will be involved in classroom study of medical theory, skills, and techniques and supervised practice at local clinical and hospital sites. After completing the VN program, successful graduates will be able to take the national examination (NCLEX) to become Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs). BAS provides the ability for Bakersfield and Kern County to “grow our own” nurses to help alleviate our communities critical nursing shortage. WELDING/BEGINNING — This course provides instruction in the beginning welding process, including shielded metal, arc welding, and gas metal arc welding. This course will teach areas of construction along with step by step instruction. Safety and proper skills instruction will be taught according to California state regulations. Safety practices and procedures along with proper use of equipment will all be emphasized, taught and tested. WOODSHOP/BEGINNING — This Construction Worker/WOOD TECHNOLOGY 1 course is designed for the student to explore the uses of wood. The use of various species of wood, correct wood construction, wood finishes, and competence in the use of hand tools and machines are covered. Students learn to plan, layout, measure, cut, fit, fasten, assemble, and finish to a competed wood project, and gain the ability to identify quality construction in wood furniture, basic house framing (multi member assembly) and general house painting will be covered. Students will be required to pay for their materials. Critical-thinking, problem solving, communication, listening, and employability skills will be developed throughout the course. Treat other students, teachers and staff with respect. Here are some important facts and rules to remember that are part of the contract you must sign to enroll in BAS classes which include the following: When you enroll, you are giving us permission to contact you by phone or email. Students are not to wear clothing that has writing or graphics referring to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gangs or sex. Cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off and put away while in class. Students must follow the attendance policy of their program. ● Park in designated areas only. Harassment of any kind towards students, teachers or staff is prohibited. ● No smoking is permitted anywhere on BAS campuses. Food and beverages are not permitted in class. If you come to school under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you will be suspended or expelled. No loitering - students must be in class. Cheating, copying or tampering with tests will result in disciplinary action. The selling of food or items is not allowed. Avoid profanity, verbal abuse and disruptiveness. ● Children are not allowed in class or testing. No disruptive clothing. Shirts and shoes must be worn at all times.
