My teacher, Mr. Trang, is great, and he is very determined to teach me how to solve problems rather than just give me answers. And I like that he’s strict. It helps me because I never really had anyone set firm guidelines for me. I’ve already passed three of four tests, which gives me self-respect, knowing that I accomplished something. My job is to give students tools and guidance. For all my classes, I set high expectations and find that students do best when they are challenged. We teach the same state standards at Fresno Adult School that are taught in a traditional school. Those standards help develop critical thinking and the reading, writing, and analyzing skills that allow students to dig deeper into the lessons. One teaching strategy I use is see, think, and wonder. Students look at a picture and then they write what they see. Then students describe what they think is happening. Then students wonder and ask and answer the ‘whys’ about the picture. I am ready to give adults the skills needed to be successful. We also have the Adult Transition Program that serves the needs of special populations which include the completion of their high school diploma and worksite training. An Adult Transition Program is available for our special student populations. Please contact Chona Villa at (559) 457-6212. HOW DO I ENROLL? 1. Be at least 18 years old Even though I’m already an adult, I want to get a good education to help my family have a better future. I’m in the ESL and GED programs at Fresno Adult School. The programs are free so everyone can benefit from education. I get encouragement from my children and grandchildren. My granddaughter asked me if I was going to school. I said, “yes mija, grandma is going to school.” I heard my son telling someone that I was getting a degree. It’s important to me that my children know that school is important. Now I can find a better job, help my children with homework, and volunteer at their school. I am ready! 2.
